(NC)—It's time to pack up sweaters, boots and mitts and begin your spring cleaning rituals. But as you start opening the windows and airing out the closets, be sure to keep your lung health in mind.

The air quality in your home can have a significant impact on your lung health. As we shake out the cobwebs, we can stir up household dust and allergens. Harsh cleaning products that give off fumes can be irritating to the lungs. If you have a lung disease like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, exposure to indoor allergens and irritants can aggravate your existing symptoms.

COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, causes permanent narrowing of the lung airways. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and coughing up phlegm. When symptoms get worse or a new, persistent symptom comes on, it could be the beginning of a lung attack, which can potentially lead to hospitalization, restricted mobility and can increase the risk of death.

To breathe easier during your annual spring cleaning, follow these steps:

Go natural. Harsh cleaning sprays can cause irritation to your lungs and trigger breathing problems. Instead, try natural cleaning solutions like vinegar.

Limit dust. Take steps to make your home as dust-free as possible. Minimize the amount of carpet and drapery in your home and wash bedding in hot water regularly to avoid the collection of dust mites.

Know the signs of a lung attack. If you have a lung disease like COPD and notice any significant change like increased coughing, wheezing or an unusual change in phlegm, contact your physician. Discuss your worsening symptoms and also ask if your medication dosages need an adjustment.

(NC)—With snowy days behind us, Canadians are coming out of hibernation and looking to spend time outdoors again. But, allergy sufferers may not be looking forward to springtime as weeds, grass and tree pollen are ready to send symptoms into overdrive. Asthma sufferers may be dreading the season change as well, since the same environmental factors that can cause allergy symptoms may also trigger asthma symptoms and even asthma attacks.

The first step in the battle against allergies, and potential asthma attacks, is to learn what allergens impact you and avoid them. Since avoidance isn't always possible, here are some tips for alleviating the bothersome symptoms associated with key areas of the body:

NOSE – Allergic rhinitis, also referred to as hay fever, affects approximately one in four Canadians. Nasal symptoms include nasal congestion, watery runny nose, nasal itching and sneezing. There are many over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants available and drug-free nasal strips may offer additional relief of nasal congestion at night to improve sleep, since they open up the nose, thereby improving airflow. For more severe symptoms, your doctor can prescribe a nasal corticosteroid spray to reduce the inflammation inside your nose.

EYES – Applying a cold compress or eye drops may offer some relief for itchy, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergies. In more acute cases, some prescribed nasal corticosteroid sprays can also offer relief for bothersome eye symptoms.

LUNGS – Seventy-five per cent of asthma patients also suffer with seasonal allergies. Unlike seasonal allergies, asthma isn't a temporary condition (even though asthma symptoms may be episodic). To reduce the risk of an asthma attack during allergy season and throughout the year, it's important to take your asthma medication(s) as prescribed to relieve symptoms and help maintain control.

At your next visit, talk to your doctor about your allergy and asthma symptoms and discuss which treatment options may be right for you.

From bug bites to plants and even detergents, it's often impossible to know the cause of a reaction. Allergist Dr. Mark Greenwald offers these tips on what care is needed if you find you or a loved one is experiencing a sudden onset of mild allergy symptoms:

• Remove the person from contact with the allergen, if the allergen is suspected to be something in the air or on the skin.
• Choose the right antihistamine: “For mild to moderate allergic reactions, antihistamines are the first line of defense,” says Dr. Greenwald. “Unlike many over-the counter options, Benadryl is an effective option for treating unexpected allergic reactions.” Benadryl is available in a variety of different formats for both children and adults, so it's prudent to keep some on hand – just in case.
• Soothe skin reactions with cold, wet cloths or ice wrapped in a towel. “New topical antihistamines such as Benadryl Itch Spray and Itch Stick can also provide fast relief from itchiness and pain, and are safe for children over the age of 2,” says Dr. Greenwald.
• If the reaction is severe, call 9-1-1 or go immediately to a hospital emergency department. Don't try to wait it out at home!

Source: www.newscanada.com

Protect yourself from poison plants!

(NC)—Kids and adults alike are often out in the woods in the summer, whether it's for a camping trip or an afternoon hike. Yet it's easy to stumble upon some common poison plants that can cause some very unpleasant reactions when your skin comes in contact with the sap. Keep an eye out for these unwelcome offenders:

Poison Ivy: The most common and widespread poisonous plant is characterized by its telltale three leaves. Grows low to the ground or as a vine, and turns bright yellow and red in the fall.

Poison Oak: Resembles poison ivy but is usually more shrub-like. Leaves resemble oak leaves, and are lighter green on the underside of the plant. From August to November it typically produces white flowers.

Poison Sumac: Found most often in wet, swampy areas. Each stem contains seven to 13 leaves. Unlike non-poisonous sumac, it features hanging clusters of green berries.

In the event of contact: A rash may not appear right away, but when it does it can be red and itchy. Try taking oatmeal baths for relief, or an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Benadryl, which can start to work in as little as 15 minutes. Benadryl also offers an itch spray and cream that can calm skin and provide relief to the immediate area. If the rash affects a large area of skin or is serious, be sure to see a doctor.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Enjoy a worry-free season of outdoor entertaining

(NC)—Summer in Canada may be fleeting, but while it's here, few can resist the temptation of relaxing with friends and family at an outdoor barbecue. There's nothing quite like enjoying great conversation and the unmistakable, mouthwatering smell of food cooking on the grill either in the backyard, up at the cottage, or out at the park.

While it's great to relax in such an enjoyable setting, it's important to take safety precautions into consideration too. To ensure your gathering is as worry-free as possible, keep these top tips in mind:

Food for thought: Undercooking meat is a common barbecue blunder, since food can char quickly on the outside, appearing “done” while remaining raw inside. Make sure the centre of food is cooked right through – use a meat thermometer to be sure. Always wash your hands after handling raw meat, and use separate barbecue tools for cooked and raw meat, too.

Be allergy aware: Enjoying the outdoors means sharing it with different types of allergens like pollen and insects. Bug bites and contact with certain types of plants, for example, can cause unexpected itching and hives. Keep some allergy medication close at hand for your guests – just in case. “Benadryl is the go-to choice for unexpected allergic reactions, and can start to work in as little as 15 minutes,” says allergist Dr. Mark Greenwald. “The brand now offers new topical products with an antihistamine and a skin protectant. Benadryl Itch Spray and Itch Stick provide fast relief from the itch and pain of bug bites, stings and poison ivy.” You never know what may hit you, so be prepared!

Common sense 'cuing: Cooking around open flames always requires precautions. Make sure your barbecue is set up away from overhanging plants or nearby structures such as fences, and avoid wearing loose clothing that can dangle over the grill while you're cooking. Most importantly, never leave the barbecue unattended, and don't try to move it while it's still hot.

Corral the kiddos: It's easy to get distracted when you're at an outdoor event, but be sure to always keep an eye on your kids. Don't just assume someone else is watching them or that they're fine playing by themselves. With backyard pools, hot barbecues and other tempting sights for little eyes and hands, you can never be too careful.

These few simple steps will help ensure your outdoor barbecues are a summer success!

Source: www.newscanada.com

Sick of morning sickness

(NC)—According to Motherisk, a clinical research and teaching program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, some 80 per cent of all pregnant women suffer from 'morning sickness' from the first seven to 12 weeks, though some 20 per cent will suffer from these symptoms for a longer period of time, possibly for the duration of the pregnancy.

While prescription medications for morning sickness are available to women, many pregnant women are reluctant to take drugs they believe may carry unwanted risks to them, or their unborn child.

Ginger is an anti-nauseant approved by Health Canada. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the value of ginger for reducing nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy and motion sickness. The beneficial effects of ginger are attributed to compounds called gingerols, which aid digestion and have a calming effect on the stomach and intestines.

Although prenatal vitamins are highly recommended by doctors and pharmacists for pregnant women, formulas containing ginger were not widely available at retail – until now. A new supplement, femMED's Pregnancy + Ginger, is now available at several major retailers.

“I am thrilled to finally see the inclusion of a safe anti-nauseate like ginger in a high quality prenatal,” said Dr. Fay Weisberg, gynecology and infertility specialist. “Up to 80 per cent of pregnant women experience some level of nausea and vomiting particularly in their first trimester; this natural remedy will be well received and a welcome relief to many.”

femMED's new Pregnancy + Ginger formula has 1000 milligrams of ginger shown to clinically prevent symptoms of nausea and vomiting. In addition, femMED uses ginger root powder since the majority of clinical studies conducted on pregnant woman have been based on the powdered form. Approximately one-half of women over 50 report a decrease in sexual desire. Since women vary greatly in their desire for sex, “low” sex drive is relative, however many of these women report this decrease around the time they begin menopause.

A drop in libido at this time in a woman's life may be due in part to physical changes that can occur at menopause, including hormone changes, changes in vaginal tissue and lubrication, fatigue, sleep disturbances, hot flashes, night sweats, and increasing general health concerns. Mental and emotional contributors including stress, changes in body image, relationship issues, and changes in sexual expectations can also contribute to decreased desire.

Of course, these factors are all interconnected, for example, an expectation of pain with intercourse due to vaginal dryness and atrophy may considerably dampen desire.

There are many herbs that have been successfully employed by women for enhancing sexual desire, satisfaction, sexual response and improving lubrication.

• L-arginine is an amino acid that helps increase blood flow to the pelvic area.
• Korean (panax) ginseng helps to improve sexual desire, satisfaction and vaginal dryness.
• Tribulus terrestris may help to improve testosterone levels, a key hormone that regulates libido
• Ginkgo biloba helps to improve blood flow and sensation to the pelvic area; it may be particularly helpful for women with low libido due to taking antidepressant medications.

Kelli Young, registered sex therapist and couples counsellor often recommends women try a natural libido supplement, like femMED's Libido along with other things such as;

• Getting to know your own body- sexually
• Using a water-based lubricant
• Experimenting with sex toys
• Adjusting your lifestyle (exercise, sleep, stress management)
• Strengthing your pelvic floor muscles (kegal exercises)
• Talking with your partner about your concerns
• Addressing relationship issues
• Making intimacy a priority (“dates”)
• Learning to communicate effectively
• Seeking counselling from a sex therapist or couple counsellor skilled in addressing sexual concerns

Source: www.newscanada.com

Navigating the stages of menopause

(NC)—The average age of menopause is 50 to 51 years of age but it can occur naturally between the ages of 40 and 55. Many women therefore who are experiencing the signs and symptoms of menopause may not realize what's causing them and that there are steps they can take to address them.

The entire menopausal process occurs in four stages: pre-menopause, perimenopause, menopause and post menopause.

Pre-menopause refers to a woman's fertile life, which ranges from her first menstrual period to her last menstrual period.

Perimenopause encompasses the years preceding menopause and it's during this stage that the hormone levels change and levels of estrogen decline. Perimenopause typically takes place between 45 and 50 years of age and can span a 2 to 6 year period of time. Early signs of perimenopause usually occur in a woman's mid 40s.

Menopause is the permanent termination of menstruation and fertility. This stage begins when a woman has her last period. Menopause can be defined by more than 12 consecutive period-free months. At this stage, ovaries no longer produce eggs as hormone production stops, and common changes become noticeable – including vaginal dryness and loss of sex drive.

Post menopause is determined after a woman's menstrual period hasn't reoccurred within a period of 12 months. Since the life expectancy of a woman is over 80 years of age, she will live 30 or more years in a post-menopausal state.

MENOPAUSE RELIEF

Menopause is not a disease, but a natural stage in a woman's life cycle. Menopause causes hormonal imbalances that trigger dozens of uncomfortable symptoms including hot flashes, headaches, nervousness, depression, irritability, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, mood swings and night sweats.

Due to the growing concerns about the risks of HRT, both doctors and menopausal women have started to pay more attention to safe and natural methods for managing menopausal – including diet, exercise, lifestyle and herbal remedies.

“I have long been a firm believer in the benefits of natural medicine, and for menopausal symptoms in particular, I recommend products containing clinically proven ingredients such as black cohosh, dong quai, chastetree berry to name a few. My patients have done very well with the femMED products. I know this company has done the necessary research that is vital for a successful outcome with my patients, says Dr. Pettle, obstetrician gynecologist, and specialist in integrative medicine.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Avoiding your next heart attack

(NC)—Cardiovascular disease is the # 1 killer of women in Canada and worldwide. Women are 10 times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than from any other disease. And our risk is 4 times greater during and after menopause than before menopause.

The news is not all bad though. Following are 9 ways we can reduce our risk.

1. Take a daily supplement that is high in omega-3 fatty acids and coenzyme Q10, two powerful and proven ingredients that can help lower our risk of heart disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids modulate the production of powerful hormone-like substances known as eicosanoids. Those produced by omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and reduce blood clotting, lowering the risk of heart attack.

If an attack does occur, it's less likely to be fatal. One study of heart attack survivors showed that if they took 1,000 mg of omega-3s daily in a capsule, they lowered their risk of dying from heart disease by 25 percent.

Omega-3 fats also lower blood triglycerides, reduce abnormal heart rhythms and the incidence of stroke, slow the buildup of artery-hardening plaques and lower blood pressure.

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) levels decrease with age and are low in patients with chronic diseases such as heart conditions. CoQ10 is found in virtually every cell of the body, including the heart, and functions as a carrier that helps mitochondria produce adenosine triphophate (ATP), the fuel that energizes cells. Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants" because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and the heart muscle has the greatest concentration of mitochondria at five thousand per cell. Statin drugs, used for elevated cholesterol levels, deplete the body and heart of CoQ10.

2. We hear it all the time but if you smoke…QUIT. If you are a women age 50 or under and you smoke, your risk of dying from a heart attack is three times greater than that of an ex-smoker.

3. Get moving. Inactivity doubles our risk for heart disease. Our heart is a muscle that needs regular exercise to stay healthy (aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 - 50 minutes).

4. Maintain a healthy weight. The risk of a heart attack is three times higher in women who are overweight.

5. Lower your cholesterol. 40% of women 55 years old and older have elevated cholesterol. Choosing a diet low in fat and cholesterol can reduce blood cholesterol by as much as 5-20%.

6. Relax. In some people, stress raises their cholesterol level and blood pressure, two factors associated with heart disease.

7. Lower our blood pressure. 52% of women 45 years+ have elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure (over 140/90) causes blood to press too hard against the walls of your arteries, wearing down the lining of our arteries over time.

8. Keep your blood sugars normal. A woman with diabetes has 5 times the risk of heart disease. Diabetes can damage artery walls, increasing the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

9. Limit your alcohol. Drinking more than two drinks per day increases your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Communication disorders affect 1 in 10 Canadians

(NC)—Imagine going through life not being able to understand what people are saying to you. Having to constantly ask people to repeat themselves. Not knowing what's expected of you or how to behave. Imagine what it's like when you can't express your feelings to your family, friends or, especially, strangers. Imagine the sense of isolation, frustration, anger.

For one out of every ten Canadians who has a speech, language or hearing problem, these things can be an everyday occurrence. But it doesn't have to be that way.

The ability to hear, understand and be understood is fundamental to our development as productive citizens and when hearing and speech problems go undetected and untreated, the results can be grievous.

According to the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA), the organization that represents 5,400 speech, language and hearing specialists across Canada, dealing with this crisis is an up-hill battle.

One of the biggest challenges is in getting referrals—being put in touch with people who need help. Often, individuals with hearing or speech disorders are labeled as having some type of behavioural problem. They're seen as either uncooperative or withdrawn, or unpredictable and hostile. This can be especially true with children. In many cases, this kind of behaviour is often merely the symptom of a more profound hearing or speech disorder and unless these individuals are referred to a hearing or language specialist, the problem can go undetected and untreated.

Daycare workers, teachers, social workers, public health nurses and doctors need to understand that behavioural problems that appear to be purely psychological can often be traced to a hearing or speech disorder. Call in the experts—they know what to look for—the subtle signs that are so often missed by professionals in other disciplines.

CASLPA estimates that Canada currently has only about half the number of speech-language pathologists and audiologists that are needed to provide Canadians with an adequate level of service. The organization is currently involved in a study that will identify the extent of that need and what will be necessary to provide Canadians with adequate detection and treatment programs.

In the meantime, other health care and social service professionals can help make better use of existing resources. This has to be a team effort, and while S-LPs and audiologists are an important part of that team, they are only one player, counting on the other members of the team—doctors, nurses, teachers and social workers—to help them help others in need.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Is your workplace a pain in the back?

(NC)—Back pain, strain or injury can happen when you least expect it—bending, lifting, twisting the wrong way, sitting hunched at a computer or even stepping out of your vehicle after a long day of driving. Over 80 per cent of Canadians experience back pain sometime in their lives, the majority as a result of what they do for a living. From physical labour, like construction and painting, to office work and truck driving, employees in almost every industry are at risk for back pain, strain or injury.

“People who perform physical labour for a living find that a great deal of their day-to-day tasks involve using the muscles in their back. Improper lifting or moving the wrong way can easily lead to back strain or injury,” says Dr. Clark Mills, president of the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors. “If that strain or injury isn't managed or treated quickly it can lead to serious pain and the inability to perform regular everyday activities.”

People who sit for extended periods of time are also at risk. Sitting in a chair that doesn't provide proper back support or hunching over a keyboard can cause back strain and long-term back problems. Avoid unnecessary strain and stress on your body by positioning your chair, keyboard and computer monitor at optimal settings for your height and working style.

Since there are many ways to injure or strain your back at work, examine your work environment and activities to assess your risk for job-related back strain or injury. If you find your job contains risk factors, consider ways to reduce your risk.

“Sometimes it's a matter of modifying tasks like changing the way you bend to lift or taking more frequent breaks from sitting,” states Dr. Mills. One of the best ways to prevent back pain and injury is to ensure your back muscles and core muscle group are strong. Just like professional athletes, everyone's back muscles require regular maintenance to keep them flexible and strong.

If you do experience back pain or injury, consult a chiropractor who can assess and treat your injury and get you back on your feet and back to work. More information and assistance finding a chiropractor can be found online at www.albertachiro.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Be aware of hearing loss: Canada's invisible disability

By Chester Decker, MSc

(NC)—More than three million Canadians of all ages suffer from hearing loss, a physical problem that can develop any time and usually is gradual and painless. You may not realize you have hearing loss because it evolves so slowly, but it can inhibit your ability to experience sounds to the extent that it can affect your life and those around you. Causes include aging, long-term exposure to noise, heredity, birth trauma, illness, reactions to medications, ear wax, tumours or head injury.

Because hearing loss is gradual, you may not be aware of its extent until someone else does. Recognizing the condition is the first step toward improving quality of life. Symptoms include difficulty hearing in public gatherings where sound sources are far away, hearing the television or telephone, understanding conversation in groups, misinterpreting what others say, hearing noise but not understanding speech, or noticing that others seem to mumble.

Hearing loss should not be a source of embarrassment. However, many who have not yet accepted the reality of their condition develop coping methods in difficult listening situations, such as asking others to repeat themselves or speak louder, turning to one side while listening, turning up audio volume to a disturbing level or avoiding gatherings where background noise makes it hard to understand conversation.

Get tested. A hearing care professional will administer a painless, quick and safe test that checks your ability to recognize tones and words at different volumes. The data produces a unique hearing pattern recorded on a chart called an audiogram, which is used to determine whether you might benefit from hearing instruments or whether medical treatment is indicated.

Hearing instruments can reconnect people to the joy of hearing and are made to selectively increase the volume of the sounds you want to hear. They can make soft sounds audible while making moderate or loud sounds comfortable, and are designed to provide relief in both noisy and quiet situations. To meet the different needs of Canada's growing community of baby boomers and the hard-of-hearing, Siemens Hearing Instruments, a division of Siemens Canada Limited (www.siemens.ca/hearing)has developed a wide array of instruments to suit various lifestyles, hearing losses and style preferences.

While no hearing instrument can solve every hearing problem or restore normal hearing, they are designed to provide programmable and adjustable amplification so you can hear better. Consider a yearly hearing test as an important part of your physical examination.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Electricity: Better safe than sorry

(NC)—Today's life is chock full of a multitude of small repetitive acts, most of them completely ordinary, where electricity plays a lead role. Now, although “Electricity” is not a synonym for “danger”, it can nevertheless bring about accidents of many kinds, from insignificant to life threatening.

By following Hydro-Québec's tips for household security, you will be able to avoid accidents and truly enjoy a power source that will give you both comfort and well being.

Household Security: Remember...

• Keep your eyes open at all times. In your home, there are many sources of danger, and the possibilities of an accident wherein electricity is a causal factor are numerous. Rooms where water is present – bathrooms, kitchens – require greater vigilance because the presence of water increases the risk of electric shocks. Be careful when using electrical equipment in these rooms: dry your hands as well as possible, and do not allow any electrical appliance or tool to make contact with water.

• Do not use any electrical apparatus whatever – hair dryer, razor, etc. – in the bathroom if the electric outlet is not equipped with a protection system (differential circuit breaker).

• Always unplug electric cooking devices (electric frying pans, casseroles, etc.) before cleaning them.

• Always disconnect the humidifier, steam iron, and coffee machine before filling them with water.

Overloaded circuits cause headaches!

• Do you use several electrical devices? Use several different electrical outlets.

• Do you have unused electrical devices? Unplug them.

• Do you need additional outlets? Use a power bar equipped with a surge protector.

• Is your device already plugged in? Use extra caution.

• Did a slice of bread get caught in the toaster? Disconnect the toaster BEFORE removing the bread.

• Does a light bulb need to be changed? Unplug the lamp BEFORE removing the old bulb.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Getting informed about childhood asthma

Q&A with Dr. Susan Waserman

(NC)—According to a recent survey, Paediatric Asthma in Canada – developed by Leger Marketing, working with the Asthma Society of Canada (ASC) – it seems Canadian parents of children with asthma may be lacking a sense of urgency and concern about the severity and management of their child's disease, resulting in potential health risks to their children.

As a healthcare professional who specializes in this area, Dr. Susan Waserman sees children with asthma who are not being properly managed far too often. To provide some insight on this issue, Dr. Waserman answers some questions about asthma control in children.

Q: What are some signs that would indicate that your child's asthma is not being managed properly?

Dr. Waserman (W): It is very important that parents take asthma seriously, even if it is considered mild. Ongoing symptoms, unscheduled doctors appointments, and emergency room visits, are some of the signs that your child's asthma is not controlled and may be undertreated. It could also mean that there is an issue with compliance, as some parents may not recognize the need for daily and ongoing asthma treatment and do not administer medication as prescribed.

Q: What immediate solutions would you recommend to parents of children with uncontrolled asthma?

Dr. W: Administering medication as prescribed is an important factor in managing your child's asthma. An Asthma Action Plan is also an excellent resource. It includes information about your child's medication, how to deal with signs of trouble and emergency steps to take. Parents should speak to their doctor or healthcare professional about developing a plan that works for their family. They will also advise you on what may be triggering your asthma.

Q: Do asthma medications limit growth?

Dr. W: Growth is a real worry for parents, especially with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), which are commonly used as a first-line treatment for daily management of asthma. Health Canada recently approved Alvesco for the treatment of children six to 11 years of age. Alvesco is a once-daily ICS treatment that has a favourable safety and tolerability profile. It is important for parents to know that uncontrolled asthma will affect growth. As always, parents are encouraged to discuss treatment with their doctor.

Q: Where can parents find information on the management of childhood asthma?

Dr. W: Parents can speak to their doctor or other healthcare professional to get more information. The ASC has recently updated its two main websites for children (www.asthmakids.ca) and adolescents (www.airsquare.ca).

Dr. Susan Waserman is an allergist in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Associate Professor of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Avoid fire and carbon monoxide tragedies

(NC)—Canadians in cities and towns across the country are evaluating their own home safety in the wake of a deadly winter that saw accidental carbon monoxide poisonings and fires dominate the headlines.

In many instances, fire officials found there were no smoke alarms or carbon monoxide alarms present in the home at the time of the tragedy. In other cases, alarms had been disconnected, had their batteries removed, or had been removed from the ceiling or wall completely.

Public safety officials say that although communities touched by these tragedies are still reeling from their losses, the lives were not lost in vain.

“Significant tragedies like the ones we saw this winter serve as a wake-up call,” says Carol Heller, a home safety specialist with Kidde Canada, this country's largest manufacturer of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. “People reassess their own home's safety to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed where they should be, are not out of date, and have full power.”

For proof that having working smoke and CO alarms actually saves lives, Heller points to stories of near-misses that had happy endings instead of tragic ones.

“In addition to heartbreaking stories, we had others this winter where alarms went off and gave families the time they needed to escape safely,” she says. “In one instance, alarms were brand new and sitting on a kitchen table awaiting installation and they went off during the night, averting tragedy.”

When conducting neighborhood inspections, or following an incident, fire departments are shocked to still find homes with no CO or smoke alarms. They are equally disturbed at the numbers of alarms they find that have been tampered with.

“Most people remove batteries from their smoke alarms if they go off due to cooking or shower steam,” Heller says. “But with today's advanced technology, there is no excuse to put your family at risk this way. Simply installing the correct alarms in the proper locations can reduce false alarms significantly, and, you can also buy alarms with 10-year batteries that never need to be replaced for the life of the alarm.”

Heller notes that homeowners should only purchase smoke alarms equipped with a “Hush” button that, when pushed, silences a false alarm temporarily so steam or smoke from burnt food can be cleared. The alarm will re-sound if a real fire is detected, and at the end of the “Hush” period, the alarm resets itself.

Heller also points out that there are two types of smoke alarms available, ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms. Testing shows that for kitchens, photoelectric alarms are the best choice as they are sensitive to slow smoldering and other fires typical of this area of your home.

“Technology is important,” Heller says, “but common sense still rules when it comes to protecting your family. Always inspect, clean and test your smoke and CO alarms each month and change the batteries at least once per year. And remember, alarms wear out! Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms every 5-7 years, as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association, whether they are battery operated or wired into your home's electrical system.”

More home safety tips can be found on the www.SafeAtHome.ca web site.

Source: www.newscanada.com

Why waiting hurts

(NC)—Mélanie is a welcoming young woman with glowing brown eyes and a jovial personality. Unlike many kidney patients who perform dialysis in a hospital for long stretches three to four times a week, she performs her own peritoneal dialysis four times a day, once while on her lunch break where she works. A virus that Mélanie contracted when she was two years old led to kidney failure. Three years later, she received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. Now in her thirties, she's on peritoneal dialysis awaiting another transplant and she finds the waiting hard, very hard. “There are people who die waiting … personally, it's my greatest fear. Sure, I'm doing well right now. But that could change. It's already starting. I get sick more often.''

Mélanie's fear is not unfounded. Studies show that kidney failure patients are more likely to die of complications related to their disease than from renal failure itself.

“Dialysis is a treatment, not a cure,” notes Dr. Copland, a kidney specialist and chair of the Kidney Foundation of Canada's Public Policy Council. “For some, the likelihood of infection or chronic inflammation is high, so is the incidence of malnutrition.”

Mélanie admits that she lacks an appetite and that keeping food down is a real challenge. “Thank goodness for soda crackers!” she laughs, but her natural good humour is cut short.

She remembers life before dialysis and knows that an organ donation would make the difference. Like the Kidney Foundation, for whom she was a child spokesperson, she urges everyone to make a positive decision in support of organ donation and to share their wishes with their loved ones. “An organ donation would so change my life. Just not having to do dialysis anymore. Just that. Not having to get up at five in the morning, then do dialysis again at eleven, then again at four and again before bed. The schedule is demanding.”

She recalls the first month she was back on dialysis. It was Friday, the 13th when she got a call at midnight. The hospital had a deceased donor and they needed her on-site within two hours. She awoke her husband and greatest support, Simon. She called her mother to share the news. She struggled with what it would all mean as she has a great fear of the transplant surgery itself and no memories of the one she'd undergone as a child. Then her cell phone rang while she was on the land line with her mother. The doctor was calling back to say the match was not the best fit for her. ''I was so disappointed,'' Mélanie's voice falls as she speaks. ''I couldn't get back to sleep. The whole weekend, my husband and I were depressed thinking this could have been it. I felt sick. It was so emotional.''

Mélanie lives with constant fear – of declining health, of the possible negative consequences of transplant surgery, but most of all – that the call won't come. She is well aware that the demand for organs is greater than the supply.

The Canadian Organ Replacement Register latest statistics note that there are over 4,000 Canadians waiting for a transplant and nearly 75% need a kidney. In 2006, 73 people died waiting for a kidney transplant. The wait could take as a long as 10 years and for thousands of Canadians, it hurts – physically and psychologically – which makes Mélanie's plea to make a positive decision toward organ donation all the more poignant. From high interest debt to frozen wages or even lost jobs, worrying about cash flow creates stress, which can cause more than just headaches for some.

While a tension headache is the most common form of head pain, nearly 10 per cent of the North Americans population suffers from the potentially debilitating migraine headache. Not surprisingly, the most frequent trigger for headache is stress.

“While stress can be exhilarating, it can also have detrimental effects on your health and life including high blood pressure, migraines, headaches and irritability,” explains Marla Warner, stress management therapist. “As a society we tend to be stressed, add to that the recent economic downturn, and many Canadians may be experiencing these symptoms. It's important to find ways to alleviate and manage stress for mental and physical health.”

Migraines are a recurrent headache disorder that are three times more likely to affect women than men and are most prevalent in adults between 20 and 50. Often accompanied by nausea, migraines may be triggered by stress, certain foods, hormone levels and lack of sleep. Common symptoms include:

• Throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head

• Moderate to severe pain intensity

• Nausea and/or vomiting

• Sensitivity to light, noise and smells

• Worsening of headache with routine physical activity

“Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, can be used to reduce mild to moderate pain associated with headaches and migraines,” continues Warner. “When used as directed, acetaminophen is an effective treatment for most people because it doesn't cause stomach upset and is least likely to interact with other medications. Products such as Tylenol Migraine Pain Ultra Relief may be especially effective for moderate migraine pain because it combines Extra Strength Tylenol with caffeine, which acts as a pain relief enhancer.”

Consider making lifestyle changes or trying some stress management exercises to help reduce the frequency or severity of migraines and headaches. If headaches occur regularly or are increasing in frequency or severity, speak with a doctor to determine your best course of action.

For more information about stress and headaches, visit www.livingwell.ca.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website: www.thenewsleader.ca

Herbal treatment is effective for psoriasis

(NC)—Psoriasis may not be life threatening, but for those who cope with it worldwide, it can be a life of quiet desperation. At least one million Canadians rely on a combination of daily treatments to control the red, itchy blotches associated with this condition.

With normal skin, the time necessary for an epidermal cell to go from creation to shedding is about 28 days. Psoriasis skin completes the process in three to four days. As a result, there is enormous build up, inadequate maturation, and finally plaque formation on the surface cells.

To deal with the frustration and embarrassment of cracked and scaling skin, daily routines usually include an annoying cycle: flare ups; scratching; showering away scales with coal-tar soaps; applying cortisone-steroid creams; repeat. Worse still, the long-term application of many creams and soaps can produce serious side effects ranging from advanced osteoporosis and high blood pressure (from cortico-steroids) to liver and kidney abnormalities (from methotrexate) or hair loss, gingivitis, and foetal malformation with the use of retinoids.
82 percent effective
It is encouraging, therefore, to learn that researchers have discovered an effective new herbal treatment from a plant known as Mahonia aquifolium (M-Folia), otherwise known as Oregon Grape Root. The active ingredients of this plant have been found to effectively alleviate the symptoms for more than 82 percent of psoriasis and eczema sufferers.

“Mahonia aquifolium is abundant in the forests of the North American Pacific coast,” says Vince Leitao at GoaPharma Canada. “In recent years, scientists have discovered that the extract of the bark and root contains alkaloids, which are believed to be strong antimicrobial and antifungal agents. Cell culture studies have demonstrated that these alkaloids induce powerful antioxidant activity. They inhibit the growth of abnormal skin cells and alleviate inflammation.”

The action of these alkaloids explains why M-Folia extract (sold in Canada as PsoEcze Care) has been successfully used to treat psoriasis and eczema, as well as other skin conditions.

“And tolerance of the ointment and cream is also very positive,” Leitao adds. “It has been evaluated as 'good' or 'very good' by 82.4 percent of patients. Mahonia aquifolium (and PsoEcze Care) are considered to be safe with no apparent adverse side effects observed in any tests to date.

“But of equal importance,” he continued, “the treatment is also seen to produce a significant 'improvement of life', a subjective parameter throughout the testing.”

More information is available online at goapharma.com.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Want to make $2,000 a week? This year, 4,200 Canadians remain on a waiting list for an organ transplant – a surgical procedure that's vital to their survival. In 2007, 193 patients died while on a transplant waiting list.

"For several years, more than 75% of people whose names are on waiting lists are in need of a new kidney. This need outweighs the availability of organs which is why living donation is often vital to many patients awaiting a kidney transplant,” explained Claude Proulx, Organ Donation Resource Nurse at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal. "Most individuals are born with two kidneys and because one kidney can adequately perform the necessary functions of both, donors can live a normal life after surgery without compromising their health and well-being,” she added.

In addition to its altruism, living organ donation has a number of reported psychological benefits with many living donors stating the donation of an organ to be the most important humanitarian contribution of their lives.
Resources for donors and recipients
St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto has experienced a spectacular growth in its Living Donor Renal Transplant Program. Since its launch in 1996, the program has recorded a 242% increase in living donation procedures. With many of its transplant-related activities centred on living donation, the hospital now runs Canada's largest living donor kidney program.

"There are numerous benefits to receiving an organ through living organ donation," stated Galo Meliton, Renal Transplant Nurse Coordinator at the St. Michael's Hospital transplant clinic. "Receiving a kidney from a living donor results in a significantly reduced “waiting” time for the recipient, who might also be able to avoid the toll of dialysis treatments. When retrieved from a living donor, the kidney is transplanted immediately, thus potentially increasing the chance that it will begin functioning right away”, he continued.

In order to inform patients awaiting a kidney transplant and their loved ones about living organ donations, St. Michael's Hospital is one of 13 Canadian hospital centres offering access to Transplant Companions workshops. Transplant Companions is a comprehensive program, offered free of charge, set up through an educational grant from Astellas Pharma Canada, Inc.

The program, which is based on a small group learning model, revolves around interactive workshops led by both a health care professional specializing in transplantation and a post-transplant kidney patient. This two-pronged approach – education and support – was designed specifically for patients awaiting a kidney transplant. The Transplant Companions program offers a component on living donation and provides patients awaiting a kidney transplant, as well as potential organ donors, with information. Participants can register online at www.transplantcompanions.ca or by calling 1 866 446-3030.
Statistics
• 548 organs used in transplant procedures in Canada in 2007 were provided by living donors

• 2,252 organ transplants were carried out in Canada in 2007, of which 1,243 were kidney transplants

• A 90-95% one-year success rate for kidney transplants involving living donors was recorded; on average, these transplanted organs continued to function for 15 to 20 years – almost double the time achieved with organs from deceased donors

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our dog's Blog at: www.frameyourpets.com

Saving at the drugstore

(NC)—With difficult economic times upon us, one of the easiest ways to save money in 2009 is by shopping smart at your local drugstore. But some may be surprised to learn that unused, expired or improperly stored medications stockpiled in our homes can actually be a major source of danger to you, our families and even the environment.

With spring just around the corner, adding the medicine cabinet to your spring cleaning checklist will help you stay healthier. Checking your medicine cabinet regularly helps you ensure all the contents are up–to-date and stored safely so next time your arthritis starts acting up, your medication can really be effective!

“Knowing what to look for is the first step in keeping a safe medicine cabinet and your local pharmacist is a great resource,” explains Tracey Phillips, Director, Pharmacy, Rexall. “Your pharmacist can advise you on what you should have in your medicine cabinet year round, how to spot expired medications, explain proper storage and help you dispose of your medications properly.”

During the months of March and April, Rexall pharmacies are offering medication disposal for free and a handy medicine disposable bag and check list to help you keep your medicine cabinet and your health in tip top shape. Here are some tips from Rexall to help you get started:

• Store your medication in a large Tupperware container in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets.

• The bathroom and kitchen are not the best places to keep your medication because of the heat and humidity.

• Don't throw your medication down the drain or in the garbage – take your unused or expired medication to your local Rexall pharmacy for environmentally safe disposal.

• Use your local pharmacy for all your medication needs. This will help minimize the risk of meds being taken in unsafe combinations.

• Keep medication in its original labeled container, so you know what's in the bottle, the expiry date and how to use it.

• The top 5 most important items to have your medicine cabinet are: assorted bandages, short acting allergy relief medication, such as Rexall Allergy Relief, Acetaminophen, motion sickness medication, and anti-diarrheal medication.

Speak with your pharmacist or visit www.rexall.ca/medicinecabinet for more information on the dos and don'ts of medicine cabinet clean up. It is easy for the common cold to become the costly cold as it has been estimated that adults suffer two to five colds per year and having a cold is one of the leading causes of missed days at work (Source: http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/common_cold.html).

Because many viruses are transmitted through shaking hands, touching surfaces and then touching your face, the joyous handshakes and embraces at work functions could result in up to a week at home in bed for office workers, and a less-than-merry holiday season for both businesses and employees.

Help ensure the common cold doesn't ruin your holiday season by following these easy suggestions from Wet Ones Antibacterial Hands and Face Wipes:

1. Although handwashing with soap and water is the most important way to reduce the spread of bacteria in and out of the office, soap and water are often not available. In these instances, experts recommend using pre-moistened hand wipes (Source: http://www.cps.ca/caringforkids/whensick/Colds.htm). The convenient travel pack is perfect for briefcases and purses, and the canister is designed to fit into standard car cup holders.

2. Feel like you can't take time off when you are under the weather? Many companies are flexible about working from home when you are ill. Your co-workers will thank you for keeping your germs to yourself, and you'll feel better sooner.

3. With all the running around this time of year, it's especially important to try to eat a balanced diet and get seven to eight hours a night of sleep. Remember your vitamins, and try to get some form of exercise every day to give yourself a strong advantage against colds and the flu.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our pet information blog at: www.frameyourpets.info

Kids vs. germs: Sensible solutions to combat the common cold

(NC)—The arrival of colder weather means kids are spending more time indoors, in closer contact with other children. The result? The common cold. In fact, kids may get up to eight colds per year, with each cold lasting an average of five to seven days (Source: http://kidshealth.org/kid/ill_injure/sick/colds.html).

“Having a cold is one of the top reasons kids visit the doctor and stay home from school (Source: http://kidshealth.org/kid/ill_injure/sick/colds.html). This is not surprising given that during cold and flu season children tend to spend most of their time indoors, between school, daycare and play-dates at friend's houses,” said Zora Crowder, senior brand manager for Wet Ones Antibacterial Hands and Face Wipes. “So not only are kids more likely to be in the presence of other children who may be carrying harmful bacteria, but they're also more likely to be in closer contact with them – either at home or at school. Always carry a travel pack of antibacterial wipes in your purse or pocket and keep one in your kids' backpack to help them stay clean.”

Help keep your family happy this winter by following these easy suggestions from the Wet Ones team:

1. Handwashing is one of the best ways to reduce the spread of bacteria. But, when water and soap are not available, experts recommend using pre-moistened wipes (Source: http://www.cps.ca/caringforkids/whensick/Colds.htm).

2. Get a load on. Your children's soft toys and blankets may harbour more bacteria than you realize – and so may your bathroom towels. Make sure these items are cleaned on a regular basis to help you and your children fight off bacteria.

3. Keep your kids home from school if they're sick. Going to school will only cause them to get more run down, and increases the likelihood that they could pick up something else or infect other children.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website at: www.thenewsleader.ca

Some things are not worth giving or receiving: Keep germs away this holiday season

(NC)—'Tis the season for giving and receiving. But some unwanted gifts, like a nasty case of the flu, can ruin your family's holidays. Help your family put up its best defence this holiday season with these tips from Wet Ones Antibacterial Hands and Face Wipes:

1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Many germs are transmitted through shaking hands, touching surfaces and then touching your face. Holding the escalator railing at the mall or shaking hands at Bob's holiday party could lead to a less-than-festive season. Keeping your hands clean will help limit the likelihood that germs will get into your system.

2. You can't always have soap and water handy, especially during the holidays. Be prepared at the school recital, office party or shopping mall by keeping a package of antibacterial wipes handy in your purse or car, like a Wet Ones travel pack or canister. Send your child to school with a travel pack in their backpack, to help them stay clean before the school's holiday party.

3. If you are constantly on the go during the holiday season, exercise and diet can suffer. It's important to try to eat a balanced diet, remember your vitamins, and try to get some form of exercise every day throughout this busy season to keep your immune system in good shape which can help ward off a cold or the flu. And don't forget to get your ZZs. A good night's sleep can also do the body wonders.

4. Whether you're in the middle of a cold or feel one coming on this December, consider taking a natural supplement that may help boost your immune system and may reduce cold and flu symptoms.

5. Limit contact with people who are sick as much as possible. Take your lunch break early and go to the mall to shop when there's less of a crowd, avoid spending a lot of time in a coughing, sniffling colleague's cubicle and teach your children the importance of clean hands to avoid spreading those cold and flu viruses.

Source: www.newscanada.com
Visit our website at: www.thenewsleader.ca
