With each release we ask the artist a set of questions, View, Object, Person & Memory. These then feed into the sleeve design, hopefully revealing a bit of personal insight about each artist. Each sleeve in the series will be completely different in design.

Try saying this really fast…Chop Chop Busy Busy Work Work Bang Bang. Again…Chop Chop Busy Busy Work Work Bang Bang! It’s certainly the longest clients name we have ever worked with!

We’ve been busy (busy) designing a new identity for the amazing digital product specialist that is Mike Douglas, aka- Chop Chop Busy Busy Work Work Bang Bang.

Mike is a super-talented digital designer that has worked with global giants such as Google, Amazon and Spotify in the past.

The brief: ‘Create something that demonstrated self-assured experience, professional in communications and energetic in approach. No bullshit. No hype. No drama. Just great service, zero fuss.’

We worked closely with Mike on the new identity, with the development of a dynamic logo, accompanying patterns, and a punchy colour palette. We also designed a landing page (full website coming soon) which you can see here.

The full identity project will be launching on our new website very soon.

New work — Identity and printed matter for Leeds’ first (and best) creative lifestyle store and events space, Colours May Vary!

Run by the fantastic duo Andy & Becky, we designed an identity that aimed to reflect their personalities through colour, graphic shapes and forms, whilst also having a playful edge. As part of the new identity we created a bespoke typeface as well as printed matter such as tote bags, postcards, loyalty cards, vinyls, carrier bags and stickers. We also designed a number of digital marketing tools for social media and email newsletter templates.

Full project on our new site soon.

The exhibition will be shown at Warehouse241, Abu Dhabi from 8th November 2017 — 11th February 2018.

We designed all aspects of the branding for the show, working with the team design team at the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation who helped out with the Arabic translations on everything from signage, caption blocks and visitor handouts. Two additional exhibits (a traditional Oud and an uncropped book) were included in the show and we produced graphics, additional signage and leaflets to sit alongside them.

We were extremely proud to have been invited (alongside some really great designers) by Design Manchester and the legendary Malcolm Garrett to submit a personal graphic interpretation of the sleeve for Buzzcocks’ 1977 single Orgasm Addict.

Malcolm’s brief — ‘Keep it simple. Fun. Bold. Square. Yellow and Blue.’

Referencing Malcolm’s original Buzzcocks’ work where he took what is usually something a record label would place no importance on (e.g. a catalogue number) and turn that element into the main ‘design element’, Michael (Build’s Creative Director) took the idea of the colour break-down and registration marks as the main design element. Stepping and repeating the marks are intended to reference the song.

All submissions will be exhibited throughout DM17 and will be displayed in some of Manchester’s most iconic buildings — including The Refuge at The Principal Hotel, the window of Fred Aldous, PLANT NOMA and the O2 Ritz Hotel during the Buzzcocks’ gig on 19th October in the City.

See all submissions for Orgasm Addict Reframed at DM17 here.

Today marks the day of our one year anniversary in Leeds — hip-hip-hooray!

As you may well know, we (Nicky and Michael) decided to move the studio back to the North of England in late-2015. Relocating home and work, finding a new studio space and still working on some great projects, it’s been a hectic year or so to say the least! But in September 2016 we finally settled into Tower Works, a redeveloped former steel pin factory built in the early 19th century with views of the Leeds/Liverpool canal (and three lovely resident swans) and Leeds City Centre.

The past 12 months here in Leeds have been really great. We’ve hired three members of staff, met some fantastic new people and worked on some exciting projects for new Northern clients. We were announced as lead-creatives for the UK’s biggest cultural event in 2018, the Great Exhibition of the North, started working with two local legends Colours May Vary and Plaey on new identity projects and worked with Leeds International Film Festival. Over the past year we’ve also added global names such as Google, Sonos and Arjowiggins to our client roster, as well as working with past clients such as Nike, Virgin America and Generation Press on new projects too.

We said it when we left London, but we truly believe that location does not affect or influence the calibre of brands and people we work with and we hope in the past year we have demonstrated that. We had a fantastic 15 years in London, it’s a truly amazing city – but the North of England is home, and we’re glad to be back!

Find out more about some of the work we’ve done since moving up North! —

Unlike London, the creative scene here is much smaller, there’s less design studios and people (in our experience) are extremely friendly and open, meaning there’s a real camaraderie between studios which makes it a great place to work. Leeds (and The North on a whole) is really evolving and that means there’s a lot of opportunities. You can really feel Leeds shifting from a digital city to an all-round creative one and it’s an exciting place to be in.

– – – –

When we made the decision to make the move up North we did so after a lot of discussion about the potential positives and negatives. One of those negatives was would we as a studio be able to get work once we weren’t based in London. The answer, I’m really happy to report is that we are still getting work. We obviously don’t know how much work we have missed out on due to not being in London (if any at all). The world and specifically the working world is shifting rapidly, how people perceive the workplace is changing. Technology has long enabled people to be able to communicate efficiently over long distances, meetings held remotely from people in different offices is commonplace. We have found that as long as the work you are doing is good then clients are happy to work with you regardless of location. It’s a modern world.

The design scene in the North of England is really thriving, of course there has always been great studios up here doing amazing work. More and more studios and individuals are giving up London for dare I say it…a better life? Our studio is in Leeds city centre, a really vibrant bustling city that has all the benefits that city life brings. Home is in the Wharfe Valley, 8 miles outside of Leeds in breathtaking countryside. Our (Nicky & I) work/life balance has changed immensely. We knew this would, but it was the studio side of things that we thought might be difficult. We have taken on 3 new team members, Ellie, Elena & Ethan. We’ve worked on some great projects, made some great new friends and met some amazing businesses…life in the North is definitely not grim.

—Michael C Place, Founder/Creative Director

We hope to continue forging new relationships both locally, nationally and internationally and welcome the opportunity to discuss any potential new projects or collaborations with businesses and design/creative studios.

If you are in the area and would like to pop by let us know — our door is always open :-)

Channelling their inner 90s selves, Nicky & Michael will be talking all things Wipeout — the game which fused technology, music and graphics and went on to shape the longstanding Wipeout series, as well as influencing the gaming landscape. Back in 1995, Nicky led the game development team at Psygnosis/Sony Playstation and Michael was part of the maverick design studio, The Designers Republic, the creative team behind the visuals, packaging and manual for the game.

We will be exhibiting at the Wellcome Collection in London at their newest exhibition, ‘Can Graphic Design Save Your Life?’, which kicks off on 7th September 2017.

The new exhibition explores the relationship between graphic design and health, considering the role of design in communicating healthcare messages through over 200 objects collected from around the world.

We will be displaying the cigarette packaging we designed specifically for ICON magazine back in 2011.

The project came about when ICON magazine asked us to respond to the Government’s decision to propose selling cigarettes in plain packaging to limit their appeal.

Lucienne Roberts and Rebecca Wright, founders of GraphicDesign& and organisers of the new exhibition, approached us last year to see if we would be interested in physically creating the cigarette packaging in response to their new exhibition. Delighted to be involved we accepted and you can now see our packaging in the flesh.

We’re delighted to announce that we will be working with Colours May Vary on their new identity!

Colours May Vary is a fantastic creative book/lifestyle store and events space in Leeds run by two legends and lovely people — Becky & Andy!

We’ve only just started working on the identity, which we will show on our website later on in the year. But in the meantime the duo needed a temporary banner for outside of their store, so we decided to announce our collaboration in a massive way!

We hope you like it & stay tuned for the full project soon.

#GetNorth in 2018!

Did someone let the cat out of the bag…?

We’ve been keeping tight-lipped over the past few months but we can now reveal that we have been commissioned to create the brand identity for the UK’s biggest cultural event in 2018, the Great Exhibition of the North!

Since the start of the year we have been working alongside the brilliant team at the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI) to create an exciting and inclusive brand identity for the Great Exhibition of the North – the first event in the North of England of its size to celebrate the amazing art, culture, design and innovation in the region.

Since Michael and Nicky relocated the studio back (home) to Yorkshire last year, we have made it our mission, wherever possible to promote design, specifically graphic design, in the region. Being involved in such a prestigious event is something that we are extremely excited about and we hope we have created an identity that Northerners are proud of.

Opening next year on 22nd June 2018 for a 10 week period in NewcastleGateshead, The Great Exhibition of the North will celebrate the North of England as a powerhouse in the arts, design and innovative industries through a range of indoors and outdoor events. It will introduce three walking routes to NewcastleGateshead which will focus on arts, design and innovation that are inspired by a major exhibition hub at the Great Northern Museum: Hancock. Other important elements of the exhibition will include an opening and closing event, an entertaining and informative summer camp for families at Exhibition Park, and a Business Expo bringing together leading lights of Northern enterprise.

Throughout the next year we will be working alongside Northumberland creative agency Twentyseven, who have also been commissioned by NGI to create the campaign messaging for the exhibition. Together we will be encouraging everyone to #GetNorth in 2018 to see why we love our region so much.

The full project will be live on our website soon…

In the meantime, follow the Great Exhibition of the North here, here and here to keep up to date with news + events.

We haven’t really had a brand identity for the last few years so we have decided to invite students and designers to re-brand Build! We are looking to see your ideas on how you would approach this hypothetical design brief – you could put forward a simple logo or a piece of type, both or neither it’s completely up to you.

Come along with an open mind and do a little research before the workshop about our studio, our work and us – the people behind Build! All you need is a voice, brain, pen (or pencil), sketchbook, a computer and a point of view.

Transport for London’s print series celebrating 100 years of the Johnston typeface has been included in the Creative Review Annual 2017.

We were approached by TFL last year as one of just 11 studios asked to design a print to celebrate the iconic sans serif typeface designed by Edward Johnston under the creative direction of Frank Pick. The face was revolutionary in unifying the visual output of the London Underground.

The print was produced as an exclusive and limited edition, alongside a poster version. The series launched at Clerkenwell Design Week in May 2016 and was also displayed at last year’s designjunction event.

A big thanks to Creative Review for covering the Johnston Typeface anniversary print series in The Annual – an awards scheme that aims to highlight stand-out work from around the world.
