  <p class="">The nerves kicked in.</p><p class="">Before starting middle school, I was worried. The enormous building dwarfed my cozy elementary school. My biggest fear? Getting lost. Middle school meant racing from class to class, room to room.</p><p class="">Luckily, an older friend had already mastered the maze. He sketched a detailed map of the entire structure, and I memorized every corner like my life depended on it.</p><p class="">And my plan worked. On day one, I strutted through those hallways with confidence. Classmates looked on in awe. For that first week, I ruled the sixth graders.</p><p class="">But not all maps work so well.</p><p class="">Yesterday, we picked a new trail at a nearby park. The website advertised an “easy circular path,” roughly a mile long. Sounded perfect.</p><p class="">Except it wasn’t.</p><p class="">Steep inclines never ended, and after 1.5 miles with no loop in sight, we checked Google Maps. The promised circle became a straight line into nowhere.</p><p class="">So we turned around and trudged back the way we came. Another 30 minutes on tired legs.   <p class="">Last year, my wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Aruba.</p><p class="">Before the trip, she found info online about a special restaurant there. Ritzy and elegant. Reservations had to be placed months in advance.</p><p class="">Excited, she reserved a table.</p><p class="">Fast forward to Aruba, midweek. It's time for our fancy meal, and we're cruising in our rental car, following directions. </p><p class="">Thirty minutes of winding roads and barren landscapes later, doubt starts creeping in. Are we lost? Do we have the right address?</p><p class="">It was getting dark.</p><p class="">Finally, the GPS led us to a gravel parking lot in the middle of nowhere. Outside of a few cars, it was deserted. Lots of trees, but no buildings in sight. </p><p class="">But then something caught our eyes, off in the distance. A faint flicker.</p><p class="">We parked and walked toward it. And amazingly, hidden behind lush foliage was a big wooden door with the restaurant’s name. </p><p class="">We pushed it open, and BAM! </p><p class="">It was like walking into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Flower-lined pathways, marble sculptures, the soothing sound of water. </p><p class="">Up ahead on the stone pathway, we turned a corner. That’s where a hostess welcomed us.</p><p class="">“Mr. and Mrs. Forrester?” she asked. “We’re ready for you.”</p><p class="">Okay….</p><p class="">She led us out the back, to a private beach, where a table waited by the water’s edge. White linen and candlelight.</p><p class="">We enjoyed one of the greatest meal experiences of our lives.</p><p class="">But here’s the thing… without the restaurant's online presence, this hidden gem would have remained, well, hidden.</p><p class="">How did my wife originally find it?</p><p class="">An online review led to a website, which offered an amazing description, which pointed to a reservation page, which resulted in an unforgettable night. </p><p class="">Digital dominoes.</p><p class="">The moral of the story? You can have the greatest restaurant in the world. Or the most mind-blowing product in the universe.   <p class="">Enter the sad trombone:&nbsp;wah wah wahhhhh.</p><p class="">When I opened the gift, I couldn’t hide my disappointment.&nbsp;<em>Clippers, really?&nbsp;</em>Not quite the dream item for an 18-year-old guy.</p><p class="">But it came in a nice case with my initials on the front, and it contained an assortment of nail products.</p><p class="">Thoughtful.   <p class="">Growing up, this was my daily summer routine:&nbsp;</p><p class="">A bike ride to 7-11, grab a super-sized Slurpee, then buy some baseball cards.</p><p class="">Over time, I collected an enormous amount of cards and carefully organized them by team and placed them inside two shoe boxes, one labeled <em>National League</em> and the other <em>American League</em>.</p><p class="">I studied these cardboard masterpieces and memorized the stats of favorite players. I had every card, especially all the valuable rookie ones. The collection stayed in my boyhood closet for years.&nbsp;</p><p class="">And then one day, I drove off to college.</p><p class="">When I returned for a holiday, I noticed something mysterious: my baseball cards were missing.</p><p class="">After an investigation, I discovered my little brother had sold — yes, SOLD — my beloved collection to another kid. And for an obscene low amount.</p><p class="">To my brother’s defense, he was young and didn’t think I cared about those cards anymore. But still…</p><p class="">A piece of my childhood. Poof! — gone.</p><h1>An Unexpected Impact</h1><p class="">Many years later, I gave a speech and used this story as an illustration. I joked about it and somehow tied it to a point I was making.</p><p class="">A few days after, a huge package arrived for me. Inside the box was a mountain of old baseball cards, most of them 15-20 years older than my original collection and probably more valuable.</p><p class="">There was a note from a man who had heard my speech and wanted to donate all of his childhood cards to me.&nbsp;</p><p class="">A lump formed in my throat as I stood there, speechless.</p><p class="">I didn’t ask for baseball cards. I had no idea my little story would move someone to an act of such generosity.</p><p class="">But it did.&nbsp;</p><p class="">And I still have those newly adopted cards to this day, in my closet. Sometimes I look at them and remember back to the carefree days of 7-11 bike rides and slurpees.</p><p class="">What’s the point of this story? I’m not sure, but here’s something to think about:&nbsp;</p><p class="">Stories move people in powerful, often surprising, ways.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Tell your stories, sprinkling them like seeds into the ground.   <p class="">There's a zoo exhibit I want to visit in Britain.</p><p class="">And it has nothing to do with elephants, monkeys, lions, or snakes.</p><p class="">It's the parrots.</p><p class="">But why go across the pond to see them?</p><p class="">Because these birds have a special talent. Donations are up, too.</p><p class="">The zoo has stumbled onto pure marketing gold. And they're leaning into it, because these salty parrots make the zoo different from competitors.</p>

See if you can guess which one.</p><p class="">This company gets tons of free advertising each year, and more than likely, you’ve marketed for them without realizing it.</p><p class=""><span>Here’s a clue</span>: you’ve probably taken pictures/videos of something this company owns. Many people post these images on their social media feed.</p><p class="">Hmmm… what business could it be? And what makes people want to take pictures?</p><p class=""><span>Another hint</span>: Think about a little glass slipper.&nbsp;</p><p class="">Ok, enough guessing.&nbsp;</p><p class=""><strong>I’m talking about the Cinderella castles at Disney World and Disneyland.</strong></p><p class="">Almost everyone who visits these parks — families, couples, friends — snaps pictures in front of these iconic attractions.&nbsp;</p><p class="">And then they post on their Facebook and Instagram feeds to make everyone back home a little jealous.</p><p class="">It cost $4.7 million&nbsp;to build the Disney World castle. It was money well-spent. Every day of the year, both castles (in FL and CA) generate a boatload of free advertising.</p><h1><strong>What's A Phone Trigger?</strong></h1><p class="">The castles are the world’s greatest “phone triggers.”&nbsp;</p><p class=""><strong>A phone trigger is when your business does something extraordinary that makes a customer want to take a picture or video.</strong></p><p class="">Today, everyone has a phone in their pocket. When people experience something interesting, it’s a natural reflex to grab the phone and hit the camera button.&nbsp;</p><ul data-rte-list="default"><li><p class="">Think about&nbsp;<strong>Carmax</strong>. When you purchase one of their cars, they place a huge&nbsp;“Carmax”&nbsp;bow on the roof. Almost everyone takes a picture.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p class="">There’s a Las Vegas&nbsp;<strong>Taco Bell</strong>&nbsp;offering weddings. Couples can purchase a wedding ceremony where they receive tacos,&nbsp;t-shirts, and a sauce packet&nbsp;bouquet. What do people do at weddings? Take pictures and videos.</p></li><li><p class="">In&nbsp;Virginia, there’s a&nbsp;<strong>Winery</strong>&nbsp;featuring the&nbsp;“world’s tallest goat tower.” Come for a glass of wine and enjoy watching goats climb the steep&nbsp;steps of a stone tower. When you witness climbing goats, what are you going to do? Take pictures.</p></li></ul><p class="">Any industry can tap into the power of phone trigger.&nbsp;</p><h1><strong>How To Create Your Own Phone Trigger</strong></h1><p class="">You don’t have to build a Cinderella castle or a goat tower to have a great phone trigger. But you do need an idea.</p><p class="">Ideas come from asking the right questions, like these:&nbsp;</p><h2>1) What will WOW my target market?</h2><p class="">Think about your most typical customer. What will delight them? An <strong>Indiana amusement park</strong> <strong>includes free fountain drinks with admission</strong>. Why? Their target market is young people who love sodas.</p><h2>2) What are two different things that I can somehow connect?</h2><p class="">Creativity is finding a through-line and connecting things which seem different. It’s why <strong>the Taco Bell wedding idea</strong> works so well. Because it’s so unusual, people talk about it.</p><h2>3) What’s something your competitors aren’t doing?</h2><p class="">Phone triggers help you avoid the copycat syndrome. <strong>A California restaurant</strong> <strong>fans out playing cards</strong> facedown and tells customers, “If you pick the joker, your meal is free.” This has become so popular that lines form out the doors.&nbsp;</p><h2>4) What is something you already do, but you can do differently?</h2><p class="">There’s <strong>a restaurant that “burns” their logo into hamburger buns</strong>. When the staff delivers these burgers to tables, the reaction is always the same: people grab their phones.
