Last year, my wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Aruba.

Before the trip, she found info online about a special restaurant there. Ritzy and elegant. Reservations had to be placed months in advance.

Excited, she reserved a table.

Fast forward to Aruba, midweek. It's time for our fancy meal, and we're cruising in our rental car, following directions.

Thirty minutes of winding roads and barren landscapes later, doubt starts creeping in. Are we lost? Do we have the right address?

It was getting dark.

Finally, the GPS led us to a gravel parking lot in the middle of nowhere. Outside of a few cars, it was deserted. Lots of trees, but no buildings in sight.

But then something caught our eyes, off in the distance. A faint flicker.

We parked and walked toward it. And amazingly, hidden behind lush foliage was a big wooden door with the restaurant’s name.

We pushed it open, and BAM!

It was like walking into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Flower-lined pathways, marble sculptures, the soothing sound of water.

Up ahead on the stone pathway, we turned a corner. That’s where a hostess welcomed us.

“Mr. and Mrs. Forrester?” she asked. “We’re ready for you.”

Okay….

She led us out the back, to a private beach, where a table waited by the water’s edge. White linen and candlelight.

We enjoyed one of the greatest meal experiences of our lives.

But here’s the thing… without the restaurant's online presence, this hidden gem would have remained, well, hidden.

How did my wife originally find it?

An online review led to a website, which offered an amazing description, which pointed to a reservation page, which resulted in an unforgettable night.

Digital dominoes.

What’s something memorable you’ve gotten for FREE?

Here’s mine… don’t laugh.

For my high school graduation, I received a unique present from family friends — never given to me by anyone else, before or since.

What was it? You ready for this?

Fingernail clippers.

Enter the sad trombone: wah wah wahhhhh.

When I opened the gift, I couldn’t hide my disappointment. Clippers, really? Not quite the dream item for an 18-year-old guy.

But it came in a nice case with my initials on the front, and it contained an assortment of nail products.

Thoughtful. But underwhelming, to say the least.

With a shrug, I placed those clips in my bathroom cabinet. Out of sight, out of mind.

But I’d occasionally use them. 

A year passed. Then 5, 10… 25 years.

And I still used them.

That’s right, that once-laughable set of clippers ended up lasting me for almost three decades, through college, grad school, marriage, kids, career.

And every time I'd see that initialed case, I would think of the friends who gave it to me.

I sadly remember the day when the container finally crumbled apart, and those dependable trimmers could barely work anymore.

Yes, there was a moment of silence for one of the greatest, most practical gifts of my lifetime.

Sometimes the things we overlook are the ones that stick around the longest.

So today, in the spirit of freshly manicured nails, I’ve got a gift for you.

Growing up, this was my daily summer routine: 

A bike ride to 7-11, grab a super-sized Slurpee, then buy some baseball cards.

Over time, I collected an enormous amount of cards and carefully organized them by team and placed them inside two shoe boxes, one labeled National League and the other American League.

I studied these cardboard masterpieces and memorized the stats of favorite players. I had every card, especially all the valuable rookie ones. The collection stayed in my boyhood closet for years. 

And then one day, I drove off to college.

When I returned for a holiday, I noticed something mysterious: my baseball cards were missing.

After an investigation, I discovered my little brother had sold — yes, SOLD — my beloved collection to another kid. And for an obscene low amount.

To my brother’s defense, he was young and didn’t think I cared about those cards anymore. But still…

A piece of my childhood. Poof! — gone.

An Unexpected Impact

Many years later, I gave a speech and used this story as an illustration. I joked about it and somehow tied it to a point I was making.

A few days after, a huge package arrived for me. Inside the box was a mountain of old baseball cards, most of them 15-20 years older than my original collection and probably more valuable.

There was a note from a man who had heard my speech and wanted to donate all of his childhood cards to me. 

A lump formed in my throat as I stood there, speechless.

I didn’t ask for baseball cards. I had no idea my little story would move someone to an act of such generosity.

But it did. 

And I still have those newly adopted cards to this day, in my closet. Sometimes I look at them and remember back to the carefree days of 7-11 bike rides and slurpees.

What’s the point of this story? I’m not sure, but here’s something to think about: 

Stories move people in powerful, often surprising, ways. 

Tell your stories, sprinkling them like seeds into the ground. Share your truth.

There's a zoo exhibit I want to visit in Britain.

And it has nothing to do with elephants, monkeys, lions, or snakes.

It's the parrots.

But why go across the pond to see them?

Because these birds have a special talent. When you enter their exhibit, they'll greet you… are you ready for this?… by cussing you the freak out.

That's right, cussing parrots.

And they don't use 10 cent cuss words — they belt out the $10 ones, if you know what I mean.

Their favorite (edited) is: “HEY F*** YOU!”

And then they laugh.

There's a handful of these f-bomb parrots, and the zoo worries they'll rub off on all their non-cussing feathered friends.

It makes for an interesting zoo trip when an animal tells you to go F OFF.

Workers have to hang signs warning parents with children, but as a result of these, uh, colorful birds, zoo attendance has skyrocketed. Donations are up, too.

The zoo has stumbled onto pure marketing gold. And they're leaning into it, because these salty parrots make the zoo different from competitors.

Developed by a doctor, the Sitting Rising Test (SRT) is designed to gauge your life expectancy.

The simple idea behind it: can you transition from a standing position to sitting and then back up without losing your balance or using your arms, hands, or knees for support?

Here's how the SRT works:

This company gets tons of free advertising each year, and more than likely, you’ve marketed for them without realizing it.

Here’s a clue: you’ve probably taken pictures/videos of something this company owns. Many people post these images on their social media feed.

Hmmm… what business could it be? And what makes people want to take pictures?

Another hint: Think about a little glass slipper. 

Ok, enough guessing. 

I’m talking about the Cinderella castles at Disney World and Disneyland.

Almost everyone who visits these parks — families, couples, friends — snaps pictures in front of these iconic attractions. 

And then they post on their Facebook and Instagram feeds to make everyone back home a little jealous.

It cost $4.7 million to build the Disney World castle. It was money well-spent. Every day of the year, both castles (in FL and CA) generate a boatload of free advertising.

What's A Phone Trigger?

The castles are the world’s greatest “phone triggers.” 

A phone trigger is when your business does something extraordinary that makes a customer want to take a picture or video.

Today, everyone has a phone in their pocket. When people experience something interesting, it’s a natural reflex to grab the phone and hit the camera button. 

• Think about Carmax. When you purchase one of their cars, they place a huge “Carmax” bow on the roof. Almost everyone takes a picture. 

• There’s a Las Vegas Taco Bell offering weddings. Couples can purchase a wedding ceremony where they receive tacos, t-shirts, and a sauce packet bouquet. What do people do at weddings? Take pictures and videos.

• In Virginia, there’s a Winery featuring the “world’s tallest goat tower.” Come for a glass of wine and enjoy watching goats climb the steep steps of a stone tower. When you witness climbing goats, what are you going to do? Take pictures.

Any industry can tap into the power of phone trigger. 

How To Create Your Own Phone Trigger

You don’t have to build a Cinderella castle or a goat tower to have a great phone trigger. But you do need an idea.

Ideas come from asking the right questions, like these: 

1) What will WOW my target market?

Think about your most typical customer. What will delight them? An Indiana amusement park includes free fountain drinks with admission. Why? Their target market is young people who love sodas.

2) What are two different things that I can somehow connect?

Creativity is finding a through-line and connecting things which seem different. It’s why the Taco Bell wedding idea works so well. Because it’s so unusual, people talk about it.

3) What’s something your competitors aren’t doing?

Phone triggers help you avoid the copycat syndrome. A California restaurant fans out playing cards facedown and tells customers, “If you pick the joker, your meal is free.” This has become so popular that lines form out the doors. 

4) What is something you already do, but you can do differently?

There’s a restaurant that “burns” their logo into hamburger buns. When the staff delivers these burgers to tables, the reaction is always the same: people grab their phones. It’s a simple idea requiring only the purchase of a cheap bun-burning tool.

A Phone Trigger Can Create Remarkable Results

Imagine if your company did something so remarkable that people told their friends.

It can happen, but it just requires thinking differently about your marketing.

Phone triggers represent the ultimate crown of advertising, the holy grail of positioning — because it means free marketing.

So the next time you see a picture of a family standing in front of Cinderella’s castle, think to yourself: “Hey Disney, nice phone trigger!"

With the right framework, you can do it!

S = Sarcasm

Prompt: Florida bans drinking on beaches for spring break.

Sarcasm = That’s okay, college students don’t drink anyway.

Think of Sarcasm as a lie stated as truth.

E = Exaggeration

Prompt: Florida bans drinking on beaches for spring break.

Exaggeration: Violators will be abandoned in the Everglades.

Think of Exaggeration as a ridiculous outcome.

O = Opposite

Prompt: Florida bans drinking on beaches for spring break.

Opposite: Doesn’t matter, FL’s drink of choice is Listerine.

Think of Opposite as the other end of the spectrum.

The Funny Business of Marketing

Depending on your brand, add playfulness into your marketing. It’s perfectly fine to show personality! 

Being a bore is a cardinal sin. Unless, maybe, you’re a brain surgeon. Patients don’t want Jerry Seinfeld operating on them.

And you never know… Jimmy Fallon might use your jokes in his monologues. Until then, don’t quit your day job.
