Notable art dealer Jack Pollock, who first discovered Morrisseau, liked to drop into Kinsman Robinson Galleries after leading his local art tours. Pollock is pictured admiring Norval Morrisseau’s mighty Sacred Eagle With Circles of Life painting. Jack said that he was glad that Kinsman Robinson Galleries represented Morrisseau at this stage in Norval’s life.

In an excerpt from Pollock’s memoir titled Dear M, he recalls the first time he met Norval, “As I walked in, [Morrisseau] scared the sh*t out of me because he started chanting and banging a drum. He was having fun, really having me on—a brilliant, brilliant manipulator. But then he went over to the table and picked up a brush and did this magnificent painting—and scared the sh*t out of me again. I got goosebumps. A combination of poor record keeping, the effects of living a nomadic lifestyle and a youthful desire has led to considerable confusion surrounding Norval Morrisseau’s date of birth.

Let's set the record straight. Correspondence appears to confirm Norval Morrisseau’s date of birth as March 14, 1931. Various media reports from 1962, at the time of Morrisseau's meteoric rise to the top of the art world, state his age as 31. Norval's then-manager confirmed that Norval agreed at the time. An avid collector of Morrisseau art, Dr. Bernhard Cinader, (D.SC Immunology, 1958), located Norval's medical records prior to his own death in 2001. Norval agreed with those records. Moreover, the year 1931 became an established fact when Norval Morrisseau applied for a Canadian passport to travel to France for “Magiciens de la terre” a contemporary art exhibit at the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1989.

Michele Vadas, Morrisseau's caregiver over twenty years, offered the following explanation. Norval, even if he knew, would have liked the fact that the year 1932 made him appear younger and that it placed his birth date in line with the year Elizabeth Taylor was born. Norval had a long-held fascination with Taylor, at times even comparing her to his own mother.

In the artistic journey of Norval Morrisseau, the unstoppable progression from simple graphic narrative to rich harmonic structures within structures has given the world a breathtaking libretto of Ojibwa legends and sacred imagery, within unsurpassed orchestrations of colour.

For those meeting Morrisseau’s paintings for the first time, the direct, flat-shaped compositions appear to be narratives with limited subjects, shallow dimensions, and random though responsive colour choices. Longer acquaintance to this master painter’s work inevitably reveals deep complexity in his colour choices and a highly refined sensitivity to colour resonances more equal to the intricate chords and sequences associated with European symphony.

The analogy of colour to music is historically comfortable, allowing a general way to understand how colour can, like music, operate in chords, keys, and harmonies that can be “in” or “out of” tune, sweetly harmonic, or terrifyingly, deliberately dissonant – and how, in the hand of a genius these nuances of resonating frequencies can create emotional states of great power.

Norval Morrisseau’s use of complex, sometimes dissonant chords and colour sequences move us through excitement and quiet, joy and awe. He knows how to quicken our visual pathway and how to slow it; to compel our eyes to dart from one corner of the canvas to another; to make the edges of our teeth tingle with a nails-on-chalkboard yellow against a plaintive mauve; to tease with counterpoint; and yet to hold the whole in exquisite balance. Refined orchestrations like these are well known to the epicure, to the wine connoisseur, to the composer, the choreographer, the architect – in short to anyone who has spent a great many hours in contemplation of the subtlest nuances of sensory experience.

Morrisseau did not use colour wheels and manuals to direct his choices, but like Van Gogh, he had a prodigious natural instinct that, through continual exploration and aspiration, developed the ability to feel his way unerringly around passages of unusual colour with extraordinary sensitivity to the impulses and overtones of each selected hue. Like the work of the Dutch artist, Morrisseau’s work should never be considered just technical wizardry. These two artists shared a deep drive to express a state of being that moved beyond the quotidian: Van Gogh in his intersection of landscape and raw emotional response, Norval in his intersection of the spirit world and reverberating storytelling. The truthfulness of Morrisseau’s shamanic vision is not to be underestimated. His narrative landscapes were as strongly in his sight1 as the French landscape was in the plein air observations of Van Gogh.

Morriseau’s early wide ranging colour palette was determined by the materials he was able to access, “anything he could find”: pencils or ink on paper, etched birch bark, and various qualities of paint, often chalk tempera or poster paint.The earthy primary tones and neutral palette of the years from ‘59 through the early 60’s were possibly encouraged by friend and anthropologist Selwyn Dewdney – perhaps out of a sense that these would be more “authentic” to an artist from such a remote background, following the thinking of a Eurocentric art perspective. This palette remained a part of Morrisseau’s colour vocabulary into the 1970’s.

Certainly, the earthy reds, yellows and green support the graphic strength in pieces such as Sacred Beaver, 1969, or The Dream of the Indian, 1973, or the nestling birds and insects of the Untitled paperwork of 1972-3. But any expectation that this unique artist would or should continue on in this “natural” palette would have been to confine him to the Native art apartheid decried by Carl Beam in 1992.

Fortunately, Norval Morrisseau’s forceful talent was to absorb the energies of his surrounding environment, redefining them through his exceptional shamanic lens.Thus the meeting with Toronto gallerist Jack Pollock that resulted in his sold-out first exhibition of 1962, provided a significant introduction for Toronto to the powerful imagery of this northern visionary, and for this visionary Morrisseau, to the broader art scene in Toronto – a Toronto flamboyant in the aftermath of the Painter’s 11 and a Canadian art scene including colour works as various as Toussignault, Riopelle, Bush, and Markle, and of course, Michael Snow’s ubiquitous Walking Woman. Clearly seen in the evolution of his colour palette, Morrisseau was not insensible to the currents surrounding him, nor to the (then) expanding spectrum of acrylic paint colours.

As early as the 60’s Morrisseau was exploring the primaries of clear bright colours with particular leaning towards the colour vibrations (now termed “luminance”) that modern acrylics could provide, as seen in the Thunderbird (acrylic on paper), 1968. Here as well, were the beginning contrasts of transparent colour vs. opaque colour.Later on, transparent colour washes would be used to demarcate alternate planes of existence and portals.

Within five years, his investigations of pairing complementary hues along with introducing modern synthetic intermediary hues like the “new” hot pink and violets were evident. Sacred Trout, 1973 is a beautiful example of the insertion of synthetic magenta, bright orange and clear cyan breaking into the simple harmony of the traditional primary palette.

By the time Morrisseau’s work was exhibited in Paris, at Magiciens de la terre, the 1989 contemporary art exhibition at Centre Georges Pompidou, the surety with which the artist wielded cools and warms, simultaneous contrasts, dissonant resonances and chromatic chords all structured in every conceivable tonal and saturation variation, put the artist in a category of colour mastery that has certainly justified the moniker “Picasso of the North”.

When we look at Copper Thunderbird | Wabino-Wiin Shaman of 1992 (image above), we are looking at a mature composition with a highly sophisticated balance of unnatural colour placements: rich yellows and heavy reds against light blues or light teals; an arresting central red/orange surrounded with many focal points including hot pink and luminous yellow punctuations. Yellow is the most difficult colour to control on the two dimensional plane, and this composition strides with all manner of yellows, the whole business as electric as Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie. The riot of dancing energy however, is held back from fracturing only by the field of subdued tempered yellow, and with the finality of the canvas edge. That tempered yellow, and the small diluted yellow-green framing Copper Thunderbird’s face are the only quiet voices that ground the eye just enough, before it moves off again into the tensions, the explosions of power and life. Although harmonic, the work is not flaccid. Although balanced, it is not easy. The tensions hold the viewer riveted, but never trapped. In this astounding masterpiece, Morrisseau gives us a visceral experience of the metaphysical power embodied in the shaman. He gives us a glimpse of the raw complex life-energy of an artist/visionary who hears the sacred symphony of being.

Much Ado about Morrisseau

When it comes to online research about Norval Morrisseau, much has been written about forensic analyses. Last year, a New York trial court held that handwriting expert testimony was not "scientific". Nonscientific experts are "experientially qualified" — that is to say, their experience largely is their expertise. Yet few experts have ever witnessed Norval Morrisseau draw, paint or sign anything.

In reality, Norval Morrisseau rarely signed any absolute genuine paintings on the reverse, and if he did, they were more likely than not titled only in pencil. Morrisseau's distinctive combinations of lowercase and uppercase cursive letters are easily discernible by anyone with significant experience with the painter.

Paul Robinson personally inspected hundreds of genuine Morrisseaus as he inventoried all of the remaining artwork in Norval Morrisseau's possession at the artist's Nanaimo studio during Spring, 2001. "I think I know Morrisseau's work as well as anybody," said Mr. Robinson, 50 years old. "The enormity of disinformation by a few individuals with a vested interest in selling fakes is a travesty," he said.

A rock star of the art world, Norval Morrisseau enjoyed regularly attending his exhibition openings. KRG made every effort to ensure Norval Morrisseau's comfort and safety at all times, from hiring private security in order to discourage visits from obsessive fans to renting medical equipment, wheelchairs and adjustable beds, to aid with his hotel stays.

The artist Norval Morrisseau made clear his disapproval at the behaviour of numerous art galleries and auction houses regarding fakes, forgeries, breaches of copyright and moral rights in numerous letters, e-mails and affidavits—some dating back to 1993—sent out years before he succumbed to the ravages of Parkinson's disease. Some were as simple as a handwritten note on hotel stationary stating, "I Norval Morrisseau did not paint the picture shown in the photograph" (signed and dated 2004—pictured above). Many of the recipients simply ignored Norval Morrisseau's requests.

»On December 18, 2013 at approximately 7:35 p.m., the above-described paintings by renowned Anishinabe artist Norval Morrisseau were reportedly stolen from a private residence in Tiny Township. OPP received a call from an alarm-monitoring station and responded to the scene within minutes of the break and enter according to the owner. Today, the paintings are valued in excess of $200,000. They were purchased by the present owner at Kinsman Robinson Galleries. Norval Morrisseau is an iconic Canadian artist whose symbols and enduring artwork have become synonymous with Canada's national identity. A number of Norval Morrisseau artworks in public collections are certified as being of "outstanding significance" to Canada's national heritage. Kinsman Robinson Galleries has accepted Internet blogger Ugo Matulić's offer to settle our defamation lawsuit against him. Based upon an agreed statement by the parties involved, the settlement of this case was approved on 16 May 2013.

Our decision to agree to this settlement was made in order to end the ongoing distraction and cost of a complex litigation process.

KRG has operated as a fine art gallery for thirty-three years. As longtime members of the Art Dealers Association of Canada, our practices are fully consistent with both the law and accepted standards in the art world. Norval Morrisseau: A Voice Not Forgotten

In keeping with the concept of droit moral (in this case the artist's right to not claim authorship of a work), Norval Morrisseau publicly disavowed the black drybrush paintings over a six-year period beginning in 2001–through the formation of the NMHS in 2005–until a month before he passed away in 2007. With no inducement, Norval Morrisseau returned his first statutory declaration to KRG in 2001 wherein he stated unequivocally that he did not paint the subject paintings.

The Visual Artists Rights Act amended U.S. law granting the moral rights of attribution and integrity to American visual artists in 1990. A recent Ontario court ruling demonstrates that Canadian artists cannot rely on moral rights protection equal to their American or European counterparts for that matter. In this case, authorship of a work is being attributed to Norval Morrisseau against his will. Clearly, Norval Morrisseau took the necessary steps–during his lifetime–to ensure that such artwork was not attributed to him in perpetuity.

Morrisseau is Canada's Picasso

Few artists of the 20th-century played a greater role in defining and then reinventing their art form than Morrisseau or Picasso. Many of their individual influences have been adopted by other artists in recent history.

Both artists exhibited in the South of France during 1969. Herbert T. Schwarz, MD, collector and author, organized Morrisseau's first solo exhibition there at Galerie Saint-Paul. Schwarz also knew Picasso well. Schwarz visited Picasso while promoting Morrisseau and tending to exhibition details.

Four decades later, there remains a strong market for top quality artworks by Norval Morrisseau's hand but collectors are passing up anything that appears second-tier.

There's been an overwhelming response to our current Norval Morrisseau retrospective, so much so that we have decided to extend the exhibition another month. On view until Nov. 20: An unprecedented number of original works from the '70s illustrated in the Sinclair/Pollock book, The Art of Norval Morrisseau (Methuen, 1979). A rare, incised birch bark scroll is of particular importance. Circa 1958-61, Thunderbird With Ancestral Motifs was part of the Imperial Oil Collection. The scroll was originally acquired from Jack Pollock in 1980. Norval Morrisseau is pictured above, at age 35, painting outdoors — which he enjoyed thoroughly — at Red Lake during August, 1966.

Morrisseau Art Stands Test of Time, 1975

"A vibrant interplay of birds, fishes and snakes."

On August 25, 1975, Time Magazine published an arts review on the iconic Canadian painter, Norval Morrisseau. Time reported, "The result is an art of fierce clarity and sophistication ... Morrisseau has moved to more flowing and self-confident works." Three original paintings illustrated the article: The Artist With His Four Wives (1975), Self-Portrait Devoured by His Own Passions (1974) and Nature's Balance (1975, pictured above). Remarking on the original painting titled Nature's Balance, arts reporter, Jon Anderson, wrote, "A vibrant interplay of birds, fishes and snakes." He continued, "The content of Morrisseau's current works is often more personally revealing than he cares to discuss." Powerful words from the past still ring true today.

»Pictured is the streetside view (2008) of the house on McKenzie Island where Norval Morrisseau lived for some time, and where he first met Selwyn Dewdney (the self-taught archaeologist, ethnologist and author) and Bob Sheppard (the OPP constable stationed on McKenzie Island from 1956-60 who introduced the two) during the Spring of 1960. The house has been occupied by a couple for the past 19 years. Essentially, it hasn't undergone any major renovation since Morrisseau lived there.

»In 1967, Canadians joined together to celebrate Canada's 100th birthday. The Centennial Committee commissioned Norval Morrisseau to paint a monumental mural for the Indians of Canada pavilion during Expo 67 held in Montréal. Pavilion commissioner, Andrew Tanahokate Delisle, Chief of Caughnawaga (Kahnawake) First Nations, was responsible to provide visitors "with an honest, sincere depiction of Aboriginal life in Canada". Prior to completion, Norval Morrisseau walked off the job (which he left in Carl Ray's hands) over objections raised by government organizers to Morrisseau's portrayal of the bare-breasted Earth Mother. Remaining true to his vision, Morrisseau's dedication read, "In honor to my Grandfather Potan Onanakonagas and to our Ancestors - Copper Thunderbird".

»This original Morrisseau depicts of the story of how the spirits of their ancestors inhabit the bear. The split background is a reference to Morrisseau's belief in the religious movement known as Eckankar—three distinct colours denote separate planes of existence. Light blue offered protection to the soul. Bear always held a special significance for the artist. Not only was Morrisseau a member of the Bear Clan, but sacred bear communicated with Morrisseau during his Vision Quest. Morrisseau never lost sight of the underlying strength of this important subject matter over his artistic career.

Celebrate 50 years of Morrisseau history with the gallery that represented Norval Morrisseau and supported the artist during his lifetime. On view are several never-before-exhibited artworks from prominent Morrisseau collectors, including Lister Sinclair (who co-wrote the book, The Art of Norval Morrisseau), Edna Fulford (who ran the Beardmore lumber yard and hardware store), Walter Ard (who taught at the Red Lake School) and Robert Houle (who attended the Beardmore tea party). September 14, 2012 marks the 50-year anniversary of Jack Pollock's first sold-out exhibit which catapulted Morrisseau to international acclaim. Within the first three days, 28 paintings by Norval Morrisseau had been sold. Around the same time, self-taught archaeologist, ethnologist and author, Selwyn Dewdney wrote, "Norval's paintings have a passion, spontaneity and unpretentious simplicity that expose the emptiness of much contemporary painting." KRG's catalogued exhibition runs from Sep 15 to Oct 20, 2012.

It's been half a century since Norval Morrisseau burst onto the Canadian art scene with his first sold-out show at Toronto's Pollock Gallery in September 1962. The art world changed forever the day Morrisseau first laid brush to canvas and began to paint the legends of his people. The AFN Delegate Reception for the Ontario Grand Chiefs includes a reception and viewing of this private collection of Norval Morrisseau paintings. Westerkirk Works of Art have produced a special edition publication specifically for the AFN 2012 Assembly. Professor James Z. Wang (College of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State University) published an informative research paper on digital painting analysis on 15 August, 2009. The following is taken from the Abstract: "The technique has been applied to the paintings of renowned aboriginal Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau. Through computerized analysis of his authentic works and the imitations, it is revealed that the curves in his authentic paintings exhibit his commanding painting skills." Wang's conclusion noted, "It is found that Morrisseau’s paintings consistently demonstrate higher level of steadiness and coherence in curves."

Wang was featured on NOVA ScienceNow (Art Authentication, season 3 & 4). He contributed to developing new computerized methods to help detect fake Van Goghs by analyzing the characteristics of brushstrokes. Morrisseau's Painting Bear & Fish Harmony

Marked by its deft fluidity of line, this painting is a masterful portrayal of its genre. Sacred fish is seated diagonally atop sacred bear. The two are connected by communication lines as power lines emanate from the fish. Norval Morrisseau executed one of his universal themes at the height of his Pollock period: the interconnection of all creatures, and their dependence on each other for survival. According to Ojibwe lore, sacred fish (pointing right towards the future) is the vessel for carrying the soul to the afterlife while the spirits of their ancestors are said to inhabit the bear (pointing left towards the past).

Morrisseau Signed COA 'For The Money'

Here's a telling comment that was originally posted to Mr. Matulic's blog by Norval Morrisseau's youngest son, Christian, on 28 November, 2007 (click on image to enlarge). The comment has since been removed by Mr. Matulic. Beginning at line 5, Christian states, "What is the point of having this blog if spirit walker only posts what he wants to share with the rest of us." He goes on to write, "In the spring of 2002 in thunder bay Ontario* A fellow by the name of mr Bill Wallace came to the house with A # of painting and asked my father [Norval Morrisseau] to authenticate some painting for him and his partner — And for a fee My father did. he sign papers with the paintings picture on the paper stating the painting where his — Just after mr Bill Wallace left my father called me back into the room and said to me that he has never painted or even seen these paintings ever — So I asked him why did you sign then, he replied well for the money!"

To recap, while the Morrisseau signatures and thumbprints on these so-called Certificates of Authenticity** are real — no forensic examiner required — they're not worth the paper they're written on as a means of authentication. Besides, if a person is forced, tricked, or coerced into entering into an agreement, then typically it is not considered to be "legally binding".

A History of 'Genuine Morrisseau'

On 7 March, 2008, Paul Robinson started a blog called Genuine Morrisseau From KRG in an effort to refute the misinformation that has been circulating on the Internet since 2007. Paul established KRG’s blog in order to inform the public, and in particular KRG’s clientele, of the continuing discussion concerning the authenticity of Norval Morrisseau art. On 18 June, 2009, Paul suspended the blog in order to concentrate his efforts on the emerging micro-blogging site, Twitter. By 18 September, 2010, Paul resumed the blog as he became increasingly aware that the concerted campaign of misinformation was not going away.

So, let's continue to separate fact from fiction: On one side, you have the artist, Norval Morrisseau, who said, "I, Norval Morrisseau, did not paint the picture shown in the photograph" after he was shown a reproduction of an alleged Morrisseau on 18 October, 2004 at his Toronto hotel. Then you have the artist's dealer, Don Robinson, having handled well over 1,000 authentic Norval Morrisseaus acquired directly from the artist over 18 years, who said that various alleged Morrisseaus were "not painted by Norval Morrisseau's hand" in 4 separate expert reports that were relied upon by the Courts.

On the other side, you have a document examiner, with impressive credentials yet no fine art experience, who said, "In my opinion there is strong support for the view that the author of the K1-K13 specimen material wrote the questioned signatures on Q1-Q3". However, he qualifies his statement by saying, "The absence of specimen signatures executed with a brush and paint has limited the scope of this examination".

The Weinsteins were among the earliest and most influential patrons of Norval Morrisseau while they lived in the remote Red Lake area from 1955 to 1963 having collected over fifty works by the yet-to-be-recognized artist. "In those days Norval was an Indian living in the woods," said Dr. Weinstein, "He had never before seen any other art or art books." Dr. Weinstein personally inscribed KRG's copy of his 2009 book. He wrote, "To Don and Paul of the Kinsman Robinson Galleries in tribute to your promotion of the art of Norval Morriseau."

"This man is better recognized around the world than many Canadian artists," he added.

He recalled that Morrisseau instantly earned acclaim at his first art show in 1962 at the Jack Pollock gallery.

"He had almost overnight fame," he said, adding that Morrisseau's shows at Robinson's gallery repeatedly sold out.

It's 2012 and you're in for a treat. For starters, here's a rare glimpse inside Norval Morrisseau's former Crace Street studio in the city of Nanaimo. It was a two-story building with stairs to a loft. Visible are Norval's big-screen TV (before they became so mainstream) which he enjoyed immensely as well as many of the collectables with which Morrisseau liked to surround himself. Note the varied and diverse artworks (from carvings to painted drums) and the abundance of green houseplants — a few of the things that stood out in my mind. It seemed to me like a bright and cheery place within which to live and to paint. Imagine traveling back in time and being in that studio while Norval worked. Though Gabe Vadas rented a nearby house, he spent many a night sleeping in the loft in order to properly care for Norval. I remember so distinctly, moments before leaving to catch our flight to the mainland, Norval asked if we could bring him some Gatorade. So, off we went in search of a case of Gatorade.

Gabe and Michele Vadas essentially provided Norval with the seeds of family rejuvenation. Contrary to the rumours and wild conspiracy theories, Norval Morrisseau wasn't "kept under guard, with no visitors allowed" nor was he "deliberately isolated" from his adult children. I'm told there was one instance when Morrisseau’s youngest son, Christian, showed up at the nursing home unannounced and he was turned away until staff okayed it with Gabe. Gabe explained that his instruction wasn't an attempt to keep Norval away from family. He made the request because a former friend previously had shown up unannounced and Norval became very afraid at the time. 1962 proved to be a pivotal year for Norval Morrisseau—$900 from Senator Grosart freed Norval from financial constraint so that he could paint all summer long. Then he met Jack Pollock who immediately offered him a solo show which subsequently "sold out" within a matter of days. Nancy Robinson and her mother Edna Fulford knew Norval Morrisseau personally and supported his artistic endeavors during his early years. This photo of Norval Morrisseau was taken by Nancy just outside Beardmore, Ontario in August 1962. “I went out to Norval's home with Jack [Pollock] and one or two newspaper reporters and some others,” said Nancy. “I took this photo with my camera while the reporters took theirs.” Edna Fulford ran the lumber yard and hardware store after her second husband, Earl, died and Norval sometimes bought painting supplies from her according to her daughter. During the summer of '62, Jack Pollock - artist and owner of The Pollock Gallery, Toronto - toured Northern Ontario giving week-long lessons in oil painting. Two ladies from the Beardmore Art Club took his course at Quetico Park. When Jack said he had an extra week with no commitments, they invited him to Beardmore. That's how I came to take a week-long session in oil painting with Jack at the Beardmore Elementary School in Aug 1962.

My mother belonged to the Beardmore Art Club and sold the painting supplies for the group in her hardware store. Norval Morrisseau came in often, she told me later, to buy supplies and had asked her and her manager, Jerome Faubert, if they thought his paintings were any good. My mother didn't know, but when Jack came to Beardmore, she said she told Norval to take his paintings to the school to show him.  

A meeting was arranged around the mid-point of Jack's stay in Beardmore. I was standing beside Pollock when he first laid eyes on one of Norval Morrisseau's paintings - I heard a sharp intake of breath. I looked at Jack - he was speechless. Then he said, without hesitation, "I'm going to have a show."

My mother bought two paintings from Morrisseau that fall as they were loading up a truck to go to Toronto for the exhibition. She was rather backward in this kind of thing but she said, "Everyone was buying them." A large-scale art fraud scheme has cast a cloud over legitimate artworks by Norval Morrisseau. As Morrisseau himself became increasingly aware of the issue over the last decade of his life, he took decisive steps to tackle the problem. KRG has built the case—beyond opinion alone—towards confirming and securing the authentication of Norval Morrisseau's art. Here's an example of Norval Morrisseau's genuine signature as it appears in a detail from the original painting, A Separate Reality. While Norval Morrisseau rarely dated or initialed the front (or back) of his canvases, this painting is an exception. By far, the vast majority of authentic Morrisseaus are signed only with Norval Morrisseau's Indian given name in Ojibwe syllabics. Morrisseau may have titled the back of a canvas or paper—typically in graphite—in a unique combination of upper and lowercase cursive script, complete with misspellings. There is a tremendous market for anything Morrisseau produced precisely because he became so popular, which didn't go unnoticed by the forgers. In an effort to curb the proliferation of fakes, Norval Morrisseau himself identified numerous forgeries in the final years of his life which he documented in various written statements. Furthermore, computerized analysis revealed that Morrisseau's authentic paintings "exhibit his commanding painting skills" and consistently demonstrate higher levels of "steadiness and coherence in curves."

This 2005 documentary film was written, directed, edited, and produced by Paul Carvalho. The Montreal-based filmmaker had unprecedented access to Norval Morrisseau’s adoptive son, Gabe Vadas, to his biological son, David Morrisseau, and to the artist himself in the last years of his life. Carvalho delved into Morrisseau's controversial life: his sexual abuse at a Catholic boarding school, his past cocaine use and his involvement with Toronto Mafia boss, Albert Volpe. Carvalho interviewed Esther and Joseph Weinstein, early patrons who first discovered Morrisseau's "natural-born" talent and later presented a Morrisseau drawing to Picasso. The film was screened at the AGO in Jan 2005, attended by both Vadas and Carvalho, before it aired on CBC-TV's Life and Times in Feb 2005. Paul Carvalho has graciously permitted KRG to screen the film now and in the future.

Handwritten notes by Norval Morrisseau offer tell-tale signs of authenticity. The story goes something like this: It was spring 1973 and Alfred worked at Walkey's Drug Store in Kenora as the pharmacist. He had married the town's head librarian, Rosellyn, in 1969. They both knew Norval Morrisseau and would lend him a few dollars from time to time, which he would repay either with a small drawing or cash, when he had it. Rosellyn would chat with Norval while he sat on the library steps creating his art. Alfred and Rosellyn became very fond of Morrisseau's artwork and various pieces hung in their homes in Kenora, Sarnia and Dunnville. Case in point: Here's an example of solid documentary evidence for Norval Morrisseau which gives a provenanced artwork its pedigree. The above image is a piece of corrugated cardboard that was used as backing material by the original framer—pretty much standard practice at the time. On closer inspection, it tells a detailed story of authenticity. Fig. A is the label that was removed from the old frame which states: "Framed by Marko Studio, Thunder Bay "P', Ontario". Fig. B is the postage meter label from Toronto, Ontario dated "30 III '70" or 30 Mar 1970 that was attached to the original corrugated box (from which this backing was cut) and sent by moulding manufacturer, Artistic Woodwork Co. Fig. C is the handwritten address label marked: "Sold To Marko Studio, 9 S Cumberland St, Thunder Bay, Ont". The artwork that came out of this frame is an original acrylic on paper by Norval Morrisseau dated 1969, of Thunder Bay origin, which was restored, reframed and sold during KRG's 2010 Retrospective—it came with incontrovertible proof of authenticity. The best provenance—or detailed history—includes documentary evidence of past owners and their locations giving a Morrisseau painting a pedigree which makes it far more valuable than an 'unprovenanced' artwork. Examples might include a handwritten letter by Norval Morrisseau to the original purchaser, a copy of a cancelled cheque to Morrisseau as proof of payment or some other documentation, by the original owner, which tells the story of the purchase from the artist. Generally speaking, provenance is an acquired characteristic of value that should be accounted for in fair market valuations. But when it comes to Morrisseau and provenance, an old property law doctrine called caveat emptor or "let the buyer beware" has never rung truer. The prudent collector should beware of blanket statements like "Provenance leading directly to the artist" that are not backed up by verifiable facts. Likewise, unexplained gaps in a painting's history can be cause for concern. Ideally, the origin of a painting should be traced back to the time that it was created by the artist. Our unique history with Norval Morrisseau has led at least one gallery owner to go so far as to assert a provenance attributed to KRG when, in fact, none existed. This side-by-side comparison makes readily apparent the common design elements shared by these two genuine Norval Morrisseaus which were painted decades apart. The painting on the left, from 1989, depicts the turtle's front and hind legs, as well as head and neck, in a similar fashion to its predecessor from the early-to-mid 1960s. The more recent painting portrays the turtle at a slightly more dynamic angle with the Green Man motif contained within the turtle's body. Dealers who represent artists or their estates automatically have access to primary source information that can be used to authenticate works. A dealer with an extensive history of handling a specific artist's work will also build up an archive of information as well as a body of experience that can help resolve questions of authorship and title. Here's a historic photo taken in the French Provençal town of Saint-Paul de Vence in 1969. Picasso and Morrisseau exhibition posters appear together in this storefront window. Herbert T. Schwarz (M.D., collector, author and art promoter) was instrumental in organizing Morrisseau's first solo exhibition in France at Galerie Saint-Paul from 3 - 24 Sept 1969 titled "Norval Morrisseau: Légendes Indiennes du Grand Nord Canadien" (under the patronage of Eugène Bussière, Consul General in Marseille.) Schwarz also knew Picasso quite well. Since Picasso was exhibiting in the South of France, Schwarz visited Picasso while promoting Morrisseau and tending to exhibition details there. Norval Morrisseau est sans conteste le plus grand artiste amérindien de tous les temps. Chaman et conteur, il a contribué à l’émergence d’un des mouvements artistiques nord-américains le plus coloré, celui de l’école des beaux-arts de Woodland. Ardent défenseur de l’environnement avant l’heure, il disait: “Mon peuple croit que la terre est sa mère et que nous sommes les enfants de la terre. En esprit, nous ne faisons qu’un avec notre environnement.” Ses créatures sont souvent reliées symboliquement par une ligne continue renforçant l’idée que tout est interrelation, thème récurrent dans son œuvre entier. The iconic Canadian painter had already established a home base in the GTA and Morrisseau was preparing to face the forgery issue head-on in the Ontario Courts when his life ended suddenly after he suffered complications from Parkinson's. Norval Morrisseau and Victoriaville Mall

Norval Morrisseau (pictured far right) had a show in Thunder Bay on April 4 and 5, 2002 at the Victoriaville Mall. Helping with the exhibition were family members Christian Morriseau (son-pictured left), Eugene Morriseau (son), Christie Kakegamic (granddaughter), Tammy Morriseau (granddaughter), Kyle Morriseau (grandson), and Joshim Kakegamic (grandson). All of the paintings in this "series" have a thumbprint as well as a "Copper Thunderbird" signature. Lots of photos were taken showing Norval Morrisseau surrounded by family members and upwards of 60 paintings. A stack of works on paper were sent to KRG at the time; they were all promptly returned to Thunder Bay. KRG advised the Morrisseau family that the gallery could not market any of these paintings.

Morrisseau Asserted His 'Moral Rights' In Copyright Law

Years before he died, Norval Morrisseau asserted his moral rights (guaranteed under the Berne Convention) by disclaiming authorship of numerous purported Morrisseaus in notarized affidavits over a two-year period from 2003 to 2005. Born Jean-Baptiste Norman Henry Norval Morrisseau, C.M., LL.D., D.Litt., R.C.A., R.S.C., on March 14, 1932, the artist was quickly propelled into the spotlight with the instantaneous success of Jack Pollock's first sold-out exhibition in 1962.

Professor James Z. Wang (College of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University) published an informative research paper on digital painting analysis on August 15, 2009. The following is taken from the Abstract: The technique has been applied to the paintings of renowned aboriginal Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau. Through computerized analysis of his authentic works and the imitations, it is revealed that the curves in his authentic paintings exhibit his commanding painting skills. The smooth and steady flow of the curves show less hesitancy of the artist [Morrisseau] than the authors of counterfeit works. "Ojibwa Bear In Fish Spawn" was shown at Jack Pollock's premier groundbreaking Morrisseau exhibition in 1962. This is just one of the early Morrisseaus in this retrospective that covers all periods of the artist's work. There are at least a half-dozen works from each of the artist's major decades. Other special subjects include "Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks," "The Sacred Bear Giving Children And Animals A Ride," "Thunderbird," and "Merman Is The Lord And Ruler of The Water of The World."
