‘Ridiculous, Frustrating, Unreal…’- Ravi Shastri

Former India captain and ex-coach Ravi Shastri has lashed out at the Indian pacers for getting injured too often.

Former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri has lashed out at the Indian pacers for getting injured too often. It is worth noting that the Indian pace department has been constantly dealing with the injuries to players. Some star pacers like Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah have been struggling to recover properly. Shastri pointed out that recurring injuries to fast bowlers is frustrating for both — the BCCI and the franchises. He added that the pacers need to make sure that they recover properly before making a comeback.

“In last three-four years, there are quite a few who are permanent residents of the NCA. Soon they will get a resident permit there too. It’s not a good thing at all. It’s unreal. You are not playing that much cricket to be injured again and again. You can’t play 4 matches on the trot. What are you going to the NCA for?” said Shastri on ESPNcricinfo ahead of the CSK vs RR game in IPL 2023. He was discussing the injury of CSK pacer Deepak Chchar.

Not only the senior men’s national team of India, but also the Indian Premier League has been impacted by the injury to pacers for the past few years.

“If you are going to come back and in three matches you are back there. Make sure you get fit and come once and for all, because it’s damn frustrating not just for the team, the players, the BCCI, the captains of the various franchises. I can understand a serious injury but every fourth game when someone touches his hamstring or someone touches his groin, you start to think what are these guys training. Some of them don’t play any other cricket. It’s ridiculous,” added Shastri.

Delhi University Separates Admission Portals For Undergrad, Masters

The university is likely to begin its admission process by May 20, he said.

New Delhi:

Delhi University will launch two separate portals for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through the Common Seat Allocation System, a senior varsity official said on Tuesday. The university is likely to begin its admission process by May 20, he said.

The admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will be through CSAS (UG) 2023 and CSAS (PG) 2023.

This will be the first time the university is opting for the Common University Entrance Test for admission to post-graduate programmes. It admitted students to its 70 colleges through CUET-UG last year.

Students aspiring to get into DU will have to appear for CUET(UG)-2023 and CUET (PG)-2023 as well as register on the CSAS UG and PG portal of the DU. The university is hopeful that this year the admission process would be “smoother”, the official said.

“We are fully prepared to take admissions to UG and PG programmes through CUET. We will be launching two separate portals for admissions to graduate and postgraduate programmes,” the official said.

“Last year, we conducted the admission through the CUET for the first time. This year the admission (process) will be smoother. We are ready to conduct PG admission for the first time as well. We are confident about that as well,” the official added.

The registrations of CUET undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are underway.

Till last week, nearly 14 lakh applications were received for the CUET-UG, registering a 41 per cent increase from the debut edition last year.

The maximum number of applications for CUET(UG) have been received for Delhi University, followed by Banaras Hindu University, Allahabad University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University and Jamia Millia Islamia.

The CUET(UG) remains the second-largest entrance exam in the country in terms of applicants. In the debut edition of CUET(UG), 12.50 lakh students registered themselves and 9.9 lakh of them submitted their applications.

The exam is scheduled to be conducted from May 21-31.

DU has failed to fill all the 70,000 seats in the current academic session despite its best efforts, as seven per cent of the seats across all its colleges remain vacant.

The university had inducted 11,300 postgraduate students in various courses.

Board Exams In 2 Terms Might Be Back For Class 12

The NCF, which is being drafted according to the new National Education Policy (NEP), also proposes doing away with the current practice of dividing streams into science, arts or humanities and commerce for classes 11 and 12. The NCF was last revised in 2005.

New Delhi:

Board exams in two terms might be back for class 12 and the final result for classes 10 and 12 will take into account the marks of previous class, according to the draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

The NCF, which is being drafted according to the new National Education Policy (NEP), also proposes doing away with the current practice of dividing streams into science, arts or humanities and commerce for classes 11 and 12. The NCF was last revised in 2005.

However, this is not the first attempt at reforming board exams.

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) was introduced for class 10 in 2009 but was revoked in 2017 and the board reverted to the old model of year-end exams.

The board exams for classes 10 and 12 were also split into two terms during the pandemic as a one-time measure but the old format of year-end examination was resumed for the crucial exams this year.

While the draft NCF proposes two term exams for classes 11 and 12 calling it “modular board exams”, it suggests that splitting the calender into two parts for classes 9 and 10 is “unnecessary”.

According to Education Ministry officials, the draft which is final stages will be put in public domain soon for feedback from stakeholders and the new system will be implemented from 2024 academic session.

As per NEP 2020, the secondary stage will comprise four years of multidisciplinary study (class 9-12), building on subject oriented pedagogical and curricular style of the Middle Stage… greater flexibility and student choice of subjects.

The eight curricular areas are—humanities, mathematics and computing, vocational education, physical education, arts education, social science, science and interdisciplinary areas.

The secondary stage has been divided into two phases—classes 9-10 and classes 11-12. Broad curricular areas such as science, social science, humanities will be offered in classes 9 and 10. Disciplines such as history, physics, language within each Curricular Area will be offered in class 11 and 12 to enable depth.

Describing the structure for class 9 and 10, the draft NCF says, “to complete Class 10, students will complete two essential courses from each of the eight curricular areas available from a total of 16 essential courses across two years of Class 9 and 10. Both the classes will will follow an annual structure (a semester structure in these classes is possible to construct but is unnecessary since all students will do all the essential courses).” “Students must clear eight board examinations at the end of Class 10- these assess each of the two essential courses in each curricular area learnt during class 9 and 10. The final certification will be based on the cumulative result of each of the examinations,” it adds.

The draft prepared by the national steering committee, headed by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan, also suggests that the current practice of streaming into science, arts or humanities, and commerce will be replaced by a design that enables both breadth through engagement with a variety of courses across streams and depth in areas chosen by students.

For classes 11 and 12, the same set of eight curricular areas will continue to be on offer, but choice-based courses will be designed based on the disciplines (example: humanities discipline will offer languages, literature and philosophy) within the curricular areas to ensure deeper and more rigorous engagement.

“This stage would be divided into semesters and each choice-based course would be for a semester. Students must complete 16 choice-based courses to complete Class 12. To ensure that the students have adequate breadth, they have to choose disciplines from at least three curricular areas and they have to complete four choice-based courses in that discipline.

For example, if a student chooses social science (curricular area) and history (discipline) within that, she must complete all four courses in history. She could then choose the humanities as the second curricular area and do four courses in philosophy. Mathematics could be the third curricular area with four courses in computer science. The fourth set of courses could be from one of the three curricular areas already chosen or from a completely different one.

“Alternatively, if a student chooses science (curricular area) and physics (discipline) within that, she must complete all four courses in physics. She could then choose arts as the second curricular area and do four courses in music. Mathematics could be the third curricular area with four courses in mathematics. The fourth set of courses could be from one of the three curricular areas already chosen or from a completely different one,” the draft says.

The NCF has been revised four times – in 1975, 1988, 2000 and 2005. The new proposed revision will be the fifth of the framework.

CBSE Revamps Assessment Scheme For Class 10 And 12 Board Exams

The move is aimed at progressively aligning assessment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations, they said.

New Delhi:

The CBSE has revamped its assessment scheme for class 10 and 12 board exams to be conducted in 2024 by introducing more Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and reducing the weightage for questions requiring short or long answers, according to officials.

The move is aimed at progressively aligning assessment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations, they said.

The change, however, might be limited to 2023-24 academic session only as the board exams are likely to be reformed next year with the introduction of new National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

“The National Education Policy, 2020, has affirmed the need to move from rote learning to learning more focused on developing the creative and critical thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century proactively. The board is initiating changes in the examination and assessment practices for the academic session 2023-24 to align assessment to Competency Focused Education,” said Joseph Emanuel, Director, CBSE (Academics).

“Therefore, in the forthcoming session a greater number of Competency Based Questions or questions that assess application of concepts in real-life situations will be part of the question paper,” he added.

In class 10, 50 per cent questions will be competency-based in the form of MCQs, case-based questions, source-based integrated questions or any other type. The weightage for such questions in the last academic session was 40 per cent.

The objective questions will now necessarily be MCQs with 20 per cent weightage.

The weightage for short answer and long answer type questions has been reduced to 30 per cent from 40 per cent last year.

Similarly, in class 12, 40 per cent of the questions will be competency focused in the form of MCQs, case-cased questions, source-based integrated questions or any other type.

The weightage for such questions in the last academic session was 30 per cent.

In class 12 too, the objective questions will now necessarily be MCQs with 20 per cent weightage. The weightage for short answer and long answer type questions has been reduced to 40 per cent from 50 per cent last year.

No Written Exam Till Class 2: New Education Draft Explains Assessment Process

The draft notes that explicit tests and examinations are completely inappropriate assessment tools for the Foundational stage (preschool to class 2).

New Delhi:

Explicit tests and exams are completely inappropriate assessment tools for children up to class 2 and written tests should be introduced from class 3 onwards, the draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF) has recommended stressing that assessment methods should be such that they do not contribute to any additional burden for the child.

The framework which is being developed on the lines of new National Education Policy (NEP) suggests that two important methods of assessment that are appropriate for the foundational stage are observations of the child and analysing artefacts that the child has produced as part of their learning experience.

The draft notes that explicit tests and examinations are completely inappropriate assessment tools for the Foundational stage (preschool to class 2).

“Assessment should allow for diversity among children and in their learning. Children learn differently and express their learning differently too. There might be many ways to assess the achievement of a learning outcome or competency. The teacher should have the ability to design different kinds of assessment for the same learning outcome and use each assessment appropriately.

“Assessment should enable recording and documentation. Children’s progress should be described and analysed through systematic collection of evidence. Assessment should not contribute to any additional burden for the child. Assessment tools and processes should be designed such that they are a natural extension of the learning experience for the child,” it adds.

Describing the assessment for preparatory stage (class 3 to 5), the draft recommends that “written tests should be introduced at this stage”.

“A variety of assessment methods should be used to promote learning. Portfolios can be used to capture student progress holistically through their work. This could also provide a reliable picture of their learning to parents. Peer and self-assessments could also be introduced to help students monitor the trajectory of their own learning.

“At the end of the preparatory stage, there should be a comprehensive summative assessment of the student’s readiness to enter the middle stage where several new curricular areas are introduced,” it adds.

The education ministry released a “pre-draft” of the NCF for school education on Thursday and invited suggestions from stakeholders such as students, parents, teachers and scholars.

The draft prepared by a panel headed by K Kasturirangan, former ISRO chief, suggests that at the middle stage (class 6 to 8), the focus of the curriculum should move to conceptual understanding and higher order capacities.

“Therefore, classroom assessment techniques such as projects, debates, presentations, experiments, investigations, role plays, journals and portfolios should be used to assess learning. Regular summative assessments at this stage will help students synthesize their learning at logical intervals such as year-end, term-end, unit-end. Summative assessments comprising multiple-choice questions and constructed responses like short and long answer, may be used periodically,” it says.

In the secondary stage (class 9 to 12), the panel has asserted that comprehensive classroom assessments should be effectively practised for facilitating meaningful learning and constructive feedback. Regular summative assessments should be conducted for recording students learning against competencies.

“Self-assessment will play a key role in student learning at this stage. Students should be facilitated to monitor what they are learning and use the feedback from this monitoring to adjust, adapt, and decide their own strategies for learning.

“Summative assessments can be designed using case-based questions, simulations, and essay-type questions to enable assessment of competencies. At this stage, students should also be prepared to undertake the board examinations and other selection tests to gain access to higher education and livelihood opportunities,” the draft adds.

According to ministry officials, the textbooks as per the new NCF will be introduced from next year.

The Education Ministry has designed four NCFs based on the 5 3 3 4 ‘curricular and pedagogical’ structure that NEP 2020 has recommended for school education.

The ministry launched the NCF for foundational stage (NCF-FS) for children between ages 3-8 years in October 2022. In continuation of that policy, the next NCF for school education is being prepared.

Revamping class 10 and 12 board exams, aligning the shift from 10 2 structure to 5 3 3 4 structure and emphasis on developmental perspectives suggesting curricular and pedagogical shifts at different stages – foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary – are among the recommendations made in the pre-draft.

The NCF has been revised four times – in 1975, 1988, 2000 and 2005. The new proposed revision will be the fifth of the framework.

survey conducted in six states by the Central Square Foundation has found

Survey covered 9,867 children in over 6,000 households in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh between November and January.

More than 40% of Indian students have never used technology for learning, a survey conducted in six states by the Central Square Foundation has found. YouTube was the most popular tool among students who accessed the internet, according to the Bharat Survey for EdTech released on Tuesday.

As many as 51% of the children surveyed were present users of education technology, while 8% had discontinued using it at the time of the survey. “Urban households had a higher prevalence of ‘present users’. The secondary (72%) and middle (55%) grades had the highest proportion of ‘present users’ compared to primary grades (39%),” the survey report said.

The survey covered 9,867 children in over 6,000 households in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh between November and January. Its report was released during a day-long conclave conducted by the foundation in New Delhi. The non-profit works to improve learning outcomes of children, especially from low-income communities.

YouTube was the most popular tool used for learning, with 89% students who used education technology accessing it. “It was followed by WhatsApp (62%) and Google (52%),” the survey found. “Overall, the prevalence of low-tech tools was low, which included text messages (8%), TV (7%), and IVRS (7%).” IVRS is short for interactive voice response system.

English (84%) and mathematics (76%) were the most studied subjects using EdTech tools. “Further, with increasing grades, higher usage of EdTech tools to study Science/ EVS, English, Language, Coding, and GK (general knowledge) was reported,” it said.

Students used technology for ease of understanding of complicated topics (53%), self-paced learning using education technology (47%) and doubt clarification (42%), the report stated.

Among children who were currently not using technology for learning, 61% cited schools reopening after the pandemic lockdown as the most prominent reason.

The survey was conducted to explore the extent of access to technology and enabling infrastructure such as electricity, smartphones, and the internet, as well as the extent of smartphone use by children.

‘Shakunis are brainwashing my brother’- Kumaraswamy

Kumaraswamy said even his father H D Deve Gowda was unable to convince his elder brother Revanna, and called it “bad fortune”.

The rift within former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda’s family over the Hassan ticket for the May 10 Assembly polls widened on Tuesday, with JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy invoking the battle of ‘Kurukshetra’ in the epic Mahabharata to allege that some ‘Shakunis’ were trying to brainwash his brother H D Revanna.

Speaking to reporters, he said even his father and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda was unable to convince his elder brother Revanna, a former minister, and called it “bad fortune”.

The Hassan seat has become a major bone of contention, as Revanna’s wife Bhavani Revanna, who has thrown her hat in the ring, has not relented despite her brother-in-law Kumaraswamy repeatedly making it clear that she would not be fielded and instead a “loyal party worker” would be made to contest.

Bhavani Revanna is a former Hassan zilla panchayat member. She has the backing of her husband as well as their sons Prajwal, who is a member of the Lok Sabha from Hassan, and Suraj Revanna, an MLC.

Kumaraswamy reiterated that his clear stand was that a party worker should be given a ticket in Hassan and that there was no question of any compromise on this. “I had said one-and-half years ago itself that to defeat the BJP candidate in Hassan, a member of our family need not become a candidate. The party has the courage to fight the election by fielding an ordinary party worker from Hassan.”

Kumaraswamy said, “There are Shakunis (the character in the epic Mahabharata) in Hassan, to ruin the family…Shakunis disturb the mind. Why did the Kurukshetra war happen, it is because of Shakuni’s conduct. This is the history of this soil and such things have happened all along in this country.”

Shakunis were not in the family but were from other parties and they came in the form of those who claim to be “fans and well wishers”, he clarified, and said, “The Shakunis from morning till evening have brainwashed (Revanna and family), I know what is going on.” In a message directed at his brother and family, the JD(S) legislature party leader said, “If you try to nurture those pretending to be well-wishers of the Deve Gowda family but in reality have an intention to finish it off, what can I do?”

Responding to a question about Deve Gowda trying to convince Revanna, he said, “He tried, but Deve Gowda too doesn’t have the strength to convince Revanna today. It is our bad fortune, what to do?”

With signs of a rift in the family owing to the Hassan ticket issue, Gowda, who has not been actively involved in political activities for some time now due to age-related ailments, recently held discussions with his two sons and Bhavani together, which however failed to break the deadlock.

Both Kumaraswamy and Revanna have since been maintaining that Gowda’s word would be final on the Hassan ticket issue.

Stating that Revanna has not contacted him till now on the subject, Kumaraswamy said, Revanna “somewhere seems to be under a fear on this issue; he has to convince me regarding the grounds for (Bhavani’s) contest”.

“I have said what my stand is a number of times. The ticket should be given to a party worker. For about four-and-a-half months now I have been working for 17 hours a day to bring this party to power independently, without caring about my health. God has to give better sense to those attempting to cause hindrance in achieving the target,” he said.

Stating that there was no question of prestige or ego between him and Revanna, he said, “I am saying what I am saying based on the ground reality, with an intention that the party should win. If selfishness is more important than the party, I cannot do anything.”

Hassan is the home district of Deve Gowda, and the party in 2018 Assembly polls had won in six out of seven segments other than the Hassan Assembly seat, which BJP’s Preetham Gowda clinched, making it the first ever win for the saffron party in the Vokkaliga dominated district.

Meanwhile, Revanna met Deve Gowda in Bengaluru last night.

Speaking to reporters in Hassan on Tuesday, he said, “I have said what I have to, to Deve Gowda. Whatever he decides is final, it is left to him. He knows this district’s politics for six decades.”

Refraining from commenting on the ‘Shakuni’ remarks of his brother and about him not paying heed to their father’s advice on the issue, he said, “Deve Gowda is our supreme leader…I have always abided by him and his words in the past and will continue to do so in the future too…..Unnecessary things are going on in the media”.

He also said he wanted JDS to win all seven seats in Hassan district, and “Kumaranna” (Kumaraswamy) to become CM.
