The Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon is underway and will go through midnight tomorrow. With all due respect to my second favorite charity (PreventCancer.org), the Jimmy Fund will always be my favorite and is a place I will always find time and ways to donate.

Last year, the Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon raised $4.5 million bringing the total since 2002 to $21 million in donations during this annual event. The goal this year is to raise $5 million dollars that will be used in the fight against cancer. Since 1948 the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Bostons Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

You can listen live to the telethon over at WEEI.com. You can donate online, or text “KCANCER” to 20222 to donate $10.

Please join me today or tomorrow in making a contribution to this great charity and even greater cause. No amount is too small to give. A quote from my favorite and most often referenced Jimmy Fund video:

“You really don’t have to donate that much, you just gotta give, a little. A little in abundance, is alot.”

Here is a random hypothetical I thought of today while I was out. I was coming out of Trader Joe’s during lunch break and I dropped my car keys while taking them out of my pocket. They landed safely on the ground but about a foot and a half away from a storm drain.

I began to think “What would I have done if they’d gone down the drain??”. I could have called someone from work to come pick me up and drive me back to my office, take the train home and then come back with my spare set the next day. This would save me some cash.

OR, I could….spend about $70 in cabs to get home and back with the spare sets right then? This would save me the embarrassment of needing to be picked up after dropping my car keys into a storm drain and would also save the hassle of taking the train.

What would you do in that scenario??

I fully plan to return to a future WSOP and I hope it will be next year. 2011 will be a tough but incredibly rewarding year as we will be adding a new addition so we’ll see. I hoped you enjoyed reading my recaps and I had a lot of fun writing them. I haven’t been writing here nearly as much as I want to so I hope this will kick-start this blog and I can get back to updating it regularly.

Even though I had been up for about 23 hours the day before, sleep was hard to come by on my last night in Vegas. I was partly excited for the play down from 27 to 9 and partly afraid to be woken up by housekeeping sometime after checkout. I had set the alarm on my iPhone so I wouldn’t sleep past 9:30 but as it turns out I would be walking down the halls of the Rio at that time. For those of you wondering, my iPhone alarm sounds something like this.

I was the first one into the media room since it was so damn early, well second as Seth Palansky (WSOP Communications Director) beat me in….and he was in for a looooong day. When I got settled in I was able to parse through the table draws and chip counts and get some notes written down about the day to come. This is what the Day 8 table draws were:

The 27 players that started Day 8 were placed at the two TV tables and a newly formed third feature table (Amazon 102) right behind the secondary table. Media access to these tables was really tough, as expected. Once they get this deep into the tournament they need to give preference to the ESPN/441 Productions cameras and the PokerNews staff.

@MattCWaldron Ducking the ESPN Camera Jib

After taking pictures of the final three tables, Paul and I would settle into the media platform on the near side of the secondary feature table. This area comes with a bit of a warning though as there is no standing allowed and is restricted to media access only. One fan tried to come in and Seth Palansky politely told him that the ESPN camera jib overhead was a safety issue and he needed to move. The fan pointed to Paul and I and said “What about those guys?”. Seth told him that were were part of the media and that we’d signed waivers that we couldn’t sue for decapitation. Me: Wait, What?!?!

Watching the secondary feature table from this vantage point was pretty cool actually, especially after table 102 broke and we had our final two tables. There was tons of confusion and commotion when trying to seat the final two tables as each player was trying to get their family and friends inside the rail to watch them try to make the November 9.

At the dinner break we were down to 15 players and play would reconvene at 8:30. Paul and I headed down to McFaddens for a final meal before I left for the airport for a 10pm flight. We met up with Lori (@PokerVixen) and Paul’s friend Tim from home. The non-poker highlight of the day happened when Paul bit into his burger and hit an air-pocket which erupted and covered Tim in a combination of BBQ sauce, ketchup and special sauce!

As the dinner break came to an end, I had to bid farewell to the Rio and Lori offered to drive me over to the airport to catch my flight. I was sad to leave the Rio, especially when they were still at 15 players, but I promised the little one I would wake her up on Sunday morning which was now just 7 hours away.

When I got to the airport and was waiting to board, Matt Affleck had his aces cracked vs. Jonathan Duhamel’s JJ on a Td-9c-7h-Qd board for a monster 40m+ chip pot. They were all in on the Turn when the 8d would land giving Duhamel the straight and end Matt Affleck’s November 9 hopes. The beat wasn’t extremely brutal as Duhamel had 10 outs to win, but at this stage in the tournament with so much riding on it, it was just gut wrenching.

The battery on my phone was dying so I powered it off as I boarded US Air flight 66 to Boston. I hoped that when I landed and powered it back on, I would know who the November 9 was. Well, fast forward 6 hours and when we touched down in Boston and I fired up the iPhone they were still 10 handed! Paul was tweeting the action hand-for-hand which went something like this: “Player X opens for Y, and picks up the blinds”.

I grabbed a Starbucks and plugged in my phone at Terminal C so I could charge up and have enough juice to follow the action on the cab ride home. Pure tweet-rail degeneracy. After about 15 minutes of charging I took a cab back to my house, was there to wake up my daughter and was able to rail the November 9 bubble during breakfast on the east coast.

The bubble would end when Brandon Steven busted in 10th place, taking home $635K. Here is your November 9:

Jonathan Duhamel — 65,975,000

John Dolan — 46,250,000

Joseph ’subiime’ Cheong — 23,525,000 (@subiime)

John Racener — 19,050,000

Matthew Jarvis — 16,700,000

Filippo Candio — 16,400,000

Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi — 14,450,000 (@TheGrinder44)

Soi Nguyen — 9,650,000

Jason Senti — 7,625,000 (@PBJaxx)

This trip to Las Vegas was unlike any other I’ve taken. My previous trips were predominantly for bachelor parties and they played out more like the movie The Hangover. This trip was part work, part play and entirely a poker geeks summer camp. Hopefully I will have this opportunity again in the future, but for now it’s back to reality!

This is part IV in a multi-part series covering my trip out to Las Vegas to cover the 2010 World Series of Poker. Please see part I, part II, and part III.

My second full day in Vegas started out a lot like the first. Wake up, shower, valet, Rio….ground hog day? [ Though I should mention that Ground Hog Day is used at the WSOP by the media to refer to the 4 Day 1's. Each of the Day 1's start with roughly the same number of players, same starting chips and same blind levels for four days in a row. ] So this wasn’t as bad! But the Hard Rock has great rooms, great showers and a Starbucks in the lobby so I can’t complain.

Today is Day 7 and we will play down from 78 to just 27 players. It’s also the day that I became more proactive. The first day and a half I was just going with the flow as more of a spectator, but on day 7 I was shooting pictures, going inside the ropes, tweeting and talking to the players a lot more than before.

The players I focused on today were: Scott Clements, Jean-Robert Bellande, Eric Baldwin, Michael Mizrachi, Joe Cheong, Soi Nguyen, Ronnie Bardah and John Racener. By watching these guys throughout yesterday and today I knew one or more would make the November 9 (turns out 4 would).

At one point in the play down to 27 the “Media Moat” would collapse as the spectators swarmed in and rendered our access useless. The Harrah’s security staff seemingly gave up and there were more than a few disgruntled media members. I can see how it got to this point: as they started breaking down the outer tables to centralize the non-feature tables they were constantly reworking the spectator ropes. At some point it was overlooked for too long and the fans took advantage. During the dinner break the staff reworked the tables and and recreated the moat giving the media better access to report on the event.

In back to back hands we would see Bryn Kenney eliminated in 28th place. On the 1st hand, Kenney would hit runner-runner for two pairs after c-betting a 5c-Qs-8c board with Ks-Jc. Kenney made a 1.3m raise on the river and his opponent, Pascal LeFrancois, thought Kenney had moved all-in so called and tabled a set of 8’s. Kenney still had under 1 million behind so lived to see another hand. “Sick runners…” said Kenney.

The next hand would see Kenney and LeFrancois all in preflop. LeFrancois raised to 300,000 and Kenney moved all in for the remaining 850,000. LeFrancois snap-called with AA and Kenney was way behind with 22. The board came out As-4h-6s-9c-8h and Kenney was eliminated.

That ended play for the day, we would return on Saturday for Day 8 to play down from 27 to the November 9. As we were leaving we ran into Matt Waldron (see Matt’s Flickr Stream) who was eager to blow off some steam. I had only been there a few days but keep in mind that many of the media members had been there since the end of May! They could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Matt and I exchanged cell #s and I headed back to the Hard Rock for a much needed shower.

About midnight I took a taxi down to the Stratosphere to meet up with Matt and have some drinks. I found him solo at the “Ultimate Texas Hold’em” table playing with a dealer named Darlene. I sat down and bought in for $100 and he taught me how to play. It’s an easy game and if you know poker, it’s a little easier to win. The house still has the edge, obviously, but a little poker knowledge goes a long way in minimizing the edge. Or at least, that’s how I see it.

We went on a roller-coaster of variance and had to reload on a few occasions but both finished with a small profit and as many free drinks as we could consume. It was getting really late so we called it a night. I headed back to the Hard Rock and crashed sometime after 4 am. I would need to wake up and pack in a few hours so I welcomed the sleep.

Thanks for reading this far and stay tuned for part V!

This is part III in a multi-part series covering my trip out to Las Vegas to cover the 2010 World Series of Poker. Please see part I and part II.

My first full day in Vegas was Day 6 of the 2010 WSOP. We got the car out of valet and headed over to the Rio to prep for the day. Paul gave me the daylight tour of the entry to the convention area (see random video here) and when we walked around the Pavilion room I got a feel for how massive it all was for the Day 1’s.

After the tour, we would head to the media room and have a look at the table draws to map out a plan of attack for reporting and photography. Harrah’s releases the table draws in PDF format and, through the magic of technology, into Google Docs it goes via @Kevmath and @ProfShadow. This makes it easily sortable and searchable and, frankly, makes our jobs easier (thanks guys!!).

The media restrictions from the previous day were still in force today and would be for the remainder of the Main Event. We still had great access, but could only go inside the inner ropes for 5 minutes every hour to get pictures, chip counts, etc. Speaking of chip counts, Paul gave me a speed course in chip counting. Since I am strictly an online poker player, chip counting is something I have never needed to worry about and the unknown was slightly intimidating. After a quick briefing from Paul I was good to go. On a few occasions I was asked by other media members about a certain players chip stack I had counted and they used it (hope I was right!).

We spent the next hour taking pictures and tweeting some of the action. See a gallery of our shots here.

One of the highlight of my trip was a conversation I overheard between Gary Wise of ESPN and one of the 441 Productions (the outlet that films for ESPN) Producers. I missed a little of the beginning but as I heard it it went something like this (paraphrasing):

GW: He’d be good for poker and good for ESPN (they are motioning over to the table with Jean-Robert Bellande, I assume they are talking about him).

Producer: Really??? He’s the shortstack! I guess it’s up to the poker gods.

GW: I don’t believe in poker gods, I only believe in ESPN!

The producer walks away and I crack up. Gary looks over at me with a smile on his face and says “That was good, huh?“.

It was getting close to 6PM Las Vegas time which meant it was almost time for the Twitter Poker Tour, our weekly poker league event. Paul and I would setup right outside the Amazon room and get ready to play and host our weekly broadcast, TPT Live. Besides broadcasting from the WSOP, the TPT Live show started off like any other show. We had over 40 players registered and play kicked off while we discussed the latest poker news of the week. Then things got a whole lot cooler.

We had been broadcasting/playing from the area outside the Amazon room where PokerRoad and The Poker Beat have been recording all month. Setup in the PokerRoad booth, cranking away at work was Matt Waldron (@MattCWaldron | Lifes a Bluff). Matt graciously joined the broadcast and shared his insight into the WPT Bellagio Cup taking place down the street and the WSOP across the hall. he was a great addition to the broadcast and we hope to have him back on again.

Through Matt’s help we were able to land two live guests. Maria Ho and Christina Lindley were walking into the Rio Convention Center and towards the Amazon room when Matt was able to pull them in for an interview. We discussed Maria’s deep run in the Bellagio Cup and poker in general.

Later on in the TPT Live show we were joined by Dan Michalski of Pokerati (@Pokerati). Topics of discussion included the NAPT, WSOP, the Lost Vegas Book and some poker inside-baseball.

Listen to the podcast of the TPT Live show here.

Back to the WSOP:

The day started with 204 players and would end with just 78 (see Paul’s recap here). The most notable bust out of the day would be 2 time WSOP Main Event champion Johnny Chan. Chan ran his KK into AA and was never able to recover. Also eliminated from contention on Day 6 was Phil Galfond, Tristan Wade, Rob Mizrachi, and the last woman standing, Breeze Zuckerman.

Still surviving the day and those that will go onto play Day 7 was: Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, David Baker, Adam Levy, Scott Clements, Eric Baldwin, David Benyamine, Johnny Lodden, Tony Dunst, and on the short stack, Jean-Robert Bellande.

After some recapping, we headed back to the Hard Rock for some Zzzz’s, then Lather, Rinse, Repeat in the AM.

Stay tuned for Part IV, thanks!!

Please see part I here.

For me, the 2010 WSOP Main Event started early. My trip wasn’t until July 14th (Day 5) but Paul would be out there for the start of the 4 Day 1’s beginning on July 5th. We had been planning a redesign for the Twitter Poker Tour website and ramped up our efforts to be sure it launched prior to the start of the Main. We had seen significant traffic increases when Paul was out on his two previous trips to the WSOP this summer so why not have the redesign complete in preparation for the biggest poker event of the year?

We were able to get the site launched and added a tweet timelime to the sidebar so that people coming to the TPT site would see Paul’s WSOP coverage tweets. On top of that we added a photo gallery so that Paul and I could showcase the pictures we took during the Main Event.

Paul did a spectacular job covering the Main and I was able to stay up to date from his twitter feed and the updates he ran on the TPT site. Here is a recap of the days leading up to my arrival at the WSOP:

I flew out of Boston’s Logan International Airport on a direct flight to Las Vegas. When we pulled back fro the gate I opened up to page one of Lost Vegas: The Redneck Riviera, Existentialist Conversations with Strippers, and the World Series of Poker by Paul ‘Dr. Pauly’ McGuire. During the 5+ hour flight I would put the book down sparingly to drink beer (and when my headache started from reading in flight, Rum and Coke). This was the longest continuous reading session since I plowed through The Stand when I had mono back in highschool. I have read Dr. Pauly’s blog for years so I expected it to be a funny book. But I was amazed at how raw the book was. He pulls no punches and tells a tale of his poker reporting life through the last several World Series. This is a must read book for fans of poker and the WSOP.

The flight was due to arrive at about 9PM local time and this was right around the end of the dinner break for Day 5. The WSOP tournament staff had imposed the same media restrictions thee had used during the “money-bubble” the previous day where they restricted table access to ESPN/441 Productions and PokerNews staff only. Prior to this you could walk between the tables to get pictures, chip counts, and hand by hand action. Now you were in the “Media Moat” as Dr. Pauly describes it; an inner rail that allows media to roam just inside the spectator rail but restricted from the poker tables.

With these restrictions in place, Paul decided to take a breather from the WSOP and come to Mccarran Airport to scoop me up. Even though we run the Twitter Poker Tour together and broadcast the TPT Live show every week for the last year, this would be the first time that Paul and I would meet in person. The great thing about “knowing” someone through all the conversations, tweets and emails is that it wasn’t like we were meeting for the 1st time. I got in the car and we bitched about the WSOP media access and cracked jokes about god knows what. We just shot the breeze and drove back to the Rio.

We parked in the back of the Rio right behind the convention center which houses the Amazon and Pavilion rooms, the two rooms that are home to the WSOP for the summer. By the time the Main Event rolls into Day 3, the Pavilion Room is emptied out and for the first time all summer, all the action in in the Amazon Room. Paul gave me the tour into the building and down the main hallway to the media room. The main hallway housed a beer concession (mental note taken), the On-Tilt clothing booth as well as PreventCancer.org and a publishing company displaying poker books.

The media room would be my new home for the WSOP while not walking the floor. It had several long banquet/press table with power strips for all our gadgets. There were roughly 6 or 7 other media outlets in this particular room, the rest were on media row in the front left and far left corners of the Amazon Room. There were two large screen TV’s in the media room that showed an overhead of the feature table as well as the flop cam. There was also a tournament clock and the WSOP Communications Staff. I met the aforementioned Seth Palansky and he hooked me up with my credentials. He said that I was the latest arrival he’s ever seen come to claim credentials! Oh well.

With credentials in hand (errr….around my neck) I made my first entrance into the Amazon Room where 300 or so players still remained from the just under 600 that began the day. Part jetlag and part disbelief, I was just a quiet participant following Paul around the Amazon room; skirting under the ropes and into the Media Moat. We moved from table to table to see all the notables still in the event. Scotty Nguyen, Johnny “F*cking” Chan, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi and his brother Robert, Scott Clements, Tristan Wade, Phil Galfond, Jean-Robert Bellande, David Baker, Adam Levy, and Eric Baldwin.

I was there to see Scotty go bust and watch him head off into the night with a proper send off from fans and media alike. Scotty would finish in 209th place for just under $49K shortly before play finished for the night. Play would end shortly after and we retreated to the media room so Paul could write the Day 5 Recap post and we could close up shop for the night.

Paul had been staying with friends up until this point but with the late hours at the Rio he was waking up the dog when he would get home. This would in turn wake up his friends baby. So Paul would share a room with me at the Hard Rock until his family came in on Saturday and they settled into a time share. After a late night dinner and drinks in the Hard Rock lobby it was time to crash. I had been up for nearly 24 hours and needed a rest. I was either way too tired or it was the rum and cokes at dinner, but I had a tough time getting to sleep that first night.

So that’s it for Part II, stay tuned for Part III. If you made it this far then I thank you!!

I wanted to take a moment and write about my experience at this years World Series of Poker. This will be more of a trip report so for reports on what happened and photos from the event check out the updates Paul Ellis and I have over at the Twitter Poker Tour website. This will be a multi-part blog post covering my WSOP Vegas experience.

A few months back I received an email from Paul (@coolwhipflea) saying that he applied for WSOP Media Credentials using the Twitter Poker Tour as the media outlet and me as a reference. He said he received an automated message that it would take about 10 days for the credential process and they would get back to him. I was very excited to hear what would come out of it because I have the utmost respect for Paul and his ability to convey poker action to people and this would be a great experience for him as both a blogger and a fan of poker.

Paul heard back from Seth Palansky at the WSOP right on schedule and he forwarded me the email saying that the credentials were approved, he was going to cover the 2010 WSOP for the Twitter Poker Tour! I couldn’t have been more happy for him, and I rushed home to tell my lovely wife the news. She, as expected, was excited and blurted out ‘Are you going to apply for credentials too!?!?!’. I had only given it a passing thought when Paul had originally applied. I mean, Paul’s the real talent, I’m just some dude that runs an online poker league, what value can I add?

It would obviously be a great experience for me as well, so I went ahead and submitted my application for credentials. After the roughly 10 day lag I received one of the best canned-response emails I’ve every received. Seth Palansky (WSOP Communications Director) informed me that I would also be covering the 2010 WSOP as a credentialed media member! I was floored, to be honest. As someone that remote railed the Main Event last year, getting updates via various twitter feeds and website updates I was going to be there in person for the action!

The next step in my WSOP adventure was deciding what days to travel out to Vegas. I had a few date ranges in mind and weighed all my options. I could go out for some of the preliminary events during a few weekends in June, or to the Main Event in July. I decided that if I am going to go, I should go for the Main Event. I already had vacation plans that coincided with the start of the main event so I made reservations for July 14th – 17th for my trip. These dates would coincide with Days 5, 6, 7 and 8. Day 8 is the day they will play from 27 players down the final 9 that will reconvene in November at the Rio and the Penn and Teller Theatre as the November 9 to crown a new 2010 WSOP Main Event Champion.

That’s it for now, stay tuned!

I also would like to play music/audio/mp3’s and feed the audio to Ustream producer and to Skype. The solution below seems to work, but I was hoping there was a way to do it without so many VAC Audio Repeaters.

Here is what I have come up with:

Note: The lines are Virtual Audio Connector lines.

Windows Media Player: Output to “Line 1″
Skype Mic: “Line 2″
