NRCan Requests Map Revision Priorities

Natural Resources Canada is responding to concerns about out of date NTS maps, and is seeking input from map users on revision priorities. If you would like to suggest revisions to a map sheet, please contact Heather McAdam at: heather_mcadam@carleton.ca. Heather and other Cartographic Librarians are part of a new working forum to provide feedback to NRCan on NTS maps and mapping program initiatives. More information on this issue is available at the Maps for Canadians website.

Faculty Technology Days

The Library, IT, and TLC will hold the annual Faculty Technology Days May 2 - 4, 2007. All Faculty and Graduate Students are invited to register and attend the free sessions. Check the FTD web page for schedule and registration. All sessions will be held in the Education Block.

Natural Resources Canada frees GIS data

Natural Resources Canada is now providing free access to their GIS data via GeoGratis. This includes the databases NTDB, CanImage and CanMatrix. Official announcement to come soon.

New Product - Scopus

The Library has acquired a new product from Elsevier, Scopus. Scopus is an abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources, covering the Social, Natural, Life, and Health Sciences. Read more about it here. Access Scopus through the Library's Research Databases page.

Build your Campus in 3D Competition

Google has announced the Build your Campus in 3D competition. Competitors need to model their campus buildings using Google SketchUp, geo-reference them in Google Earth, then submit entries through the competition website.

New GIS product from NRCan

Natural Resources Canada has announced a new GIS product called CanVec. Currently in beta, it will be available spring 2007. For more information on this product see the description page.

GEOBASE moving to Engineering Village (Compendex)

Elsevier will be moving their Geography research database GEOBASE from ScienceDirect to Compendex as of January 21, 2007. Read more about it here.

Statistics Canada website unavailable Saturday, December 2

From Statistics Canada: Please note that the annual power down for the Statistics Canada Main Computer Centre (MCC) has been scheduled for Saturday December 2, 2006.  Full service should be restored at 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 3.  This includes the Census and E-STAT modules.

Geography Awareness Week & GIS Day

This year the Canadian Association of Geographers is promoting Geography Awareness Week: November 13 - 17, and GIS Day: November 15, in order to increase awareness of how human and physical geography in Canada is changing and the social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental implications of these changes. Maps for Canadians mapsforcanadians.ca has been set up to inform map users about the Ministry of Natural Resources' plans to stop printing NTS topographic maps beginning January 2007.

New product: RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and citation management program that allows you to create your own personal database by importing reference citations from text files or online databases. For more information, check the Library's RefWorks webpage

CAG/Statistics Canada Student Award

New product: Natural.Re.Source

Natural.Re.Source is a comprehensive database of legislation and public policy documents concerning the natural resources sector in seven Canadian jurisdictions: Federal, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Yukon, NWT and Ontario. Of interest to those involved with energy, environment, climate, water, wildlife and forestry.

Jason from MediaLogic will be at the Library on Wednesday October 4th to conduct training on Natural.Re.Source. Sessions will be held at 9-10 and again at 10:30-11:30, in MLT 909. These sessions are open to faculty, students and IR staff.
