As you may already remember some of the exciting undiscovered Balochistan we brought in our last imagery update, here is more Balochistan to explore. In recent satellite imagery update by Google Earth during week of 12th December, many more pleasant features unleash. Following screenshot mentions the settlements of Jiwani, Laura and Okar near Ganz (one of the recommended surfing beach).

Also if you remember the excellently planned gardens & agriculture fields of Shank then here are the mysterious green fields of Sar-i-Parom.

One of the most important discovery through this update is the existence of three extremely different types of geological structures at mere distances of few hundred meters from each other and actually touching the boundaries of each other. As you can see in following screenshot of Kharan area, where green lands, desert and rocky mountains exist in single view point.

Apart from these updates from beautiful Balochistan, following other important areas were also updated.

Lahore and surrounding areas.
Peshawar and surrounding areas.
Chalgari
Mahmud Aulia
Sanhri
Sinjawi
Sadhoojoo
Mohammad Pur
Pano Aqil City
Baiji Purani
Sangrar
Bitri
Mamro
Mithrau
North side of Kalri Lake

You can also download the Google Earth KML file and explore the marked updated areas yourself.

Google has produced a new global set of updated satellite imagery on 28th November 2011. This satellite imagery covers huge area in Pakistan and significantly important towns and settlements. You can download the Google Earth KML file and see the marked areas with updated satellite imagery. You can also subscribe to emails with Follow your World application to receive notifications regarding imagery updates to your areas of interest.

A vast size of area in Pakistan has received satellite imagery updates. Badin District in Sindh province that recently been affected by massive floods due to Monsoon season in late summer this year receives a massive satellite imagery update.

Undiscovered Balochistan

One of the interesting part of the update is the undiscovered areas of Balochistan province. Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan in relation to area size although hosts very small amount of population as compared to other provinces. Balochistan is full of rocky mountains to sandy beaches, lakes, hiking opportunities, canals, fords, gardens and diverse extreme weather conditions from blazing hot summer to freezing cold winter. By utalizing this imagery update we share some of the undiscovered places and let you find more on own your using Google Earth.

Surfing in Ganz

Ganz is located almost at West corner of Balochistan near border of Iran. The nearest famous town is Jewani and Gwadar. Ganz beach has been recommended for surfing by surf-forecast website and many others because of its fairly consistent tides and surfing waves.

Regiwar

Regiwar is very small settlement in middle of Balochistan province. The noticeable attractions are nearby mountains that are shaped in particular way to form a pallet like structure. These mountains are part of Hingol National Park.

Gardens & agriculture fields of Shank

Shank or Bibi Shank is medium sized settlement surrounded by approximately 50 Km man-made wide stripes of gardens and agriculture fields. The amazing part is a very well organised structure of these gardens and fields. It has been so beautifully structured that from a distance aerial imagery, it looks like a pattern.

Other most prominent areas included in this update are listed below.
Badin district, DHA city, North area of Jamshoro, Mirpur Khas, Sanghriaro Lake, Sanghar town, Indus Dolphin reserves in Sindh
Khuzdar, Shank, Regiwar, Suleman Mountain range and Ganz seaside town in Balochistan.
Dera Ghazi Khan, Jampur, South side of Sahiwal, Allah Abad and Ara near Khewra.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Barram Ghali, Harianai and Biar.
Laki Marwat in Federal Administrated Tribal Areas and Hattian Bala in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Here is the latest satellite imagery update by Google. This update is relatively small but it covers the important places. Google announcement at Lat-Long blog has featured the runway of Peshawar International Airport.

This imagery update provides the fresh satellite imagery for Kalam Valley which is one of the most attractive place for tourists in North-East Pakistan. Also it covers the latest images for Jacobabad town, huge area of North Shikarpur, East Karachi in Sindh and Khuzdar and surrounding areas in Balochistan.

Another important feature covered by this update is the Khojak Railway Tunnel near Chaman, Balochistan. Khojak tunnel was built in 1891 at Khojak Pass. It is 3.91 Kilometers long and remains the longest tunnel in South-Asia until replaced by the 8.6 Kilometers long Lowari Tunnel, currently under construction and to be completed in 2013. The entrance of Khojak Tunnel from Quetta to Chaman bound was also featured on back side of old 5 Rupees bank note by State Bank of Pakistan.

Here in following image taken from Google Earth, we have tried to measure the length of tunnel using Google Earth measuring tool and it also tells the length of approximately 3.91 Kilometers from visible entrances of both sides.

You can also download the Google Earth KML file to see the imagery update for yourself and can subscribe at Follow Your World to track the updates in your areas of interests.

About Mojgarh Fort

The Moj Garh fort was founded by Muhammad Maroof Khan Kehrani, in 1743 A.D. This square fort decorated with glazed tiles and surmounted by a single dome stands about 400 yards south of the fort. The fort is at a distance of 32 km from Marot Fort and at present the fort is in ruins. The outer burnt-brick facing and the interior facing of the fortification wall has collapsed at several places exposing the mud brick core. The fort is almost square in plan measuring 325, 312, and 238 feet on the southern, western and northern sides respectively. The walls are strengthened with a series of semi circular bastions.

After a long gap since we had a debut mapping party in Lahore at FAST-NU in early 2010, here comes the party season for this year.

This year party season includes three mapping parties that are going to be in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi on 7th, 9th & 10th June respectively. These mapping parties basically serve the purpose of sharing and expanding knowledge & usabilities of digital cartography for public use at Google Map Maker platform by get-together of existing active mappers and new interested mappers from around the country & diaspora. Another fun purpose of these events are to collectively map an area chosen at the event by majority of attendees.

The mapping parties are arranged by Google Map Maker Community Team & Advocates along with local support partners such as Google Pakistan, CIO Pakistan and more to come along.

One can attend as many events as they wish though they have to register for each event in time in order to attend the event however events have already been arranged in three largest cities of Pakistan to facilitate the attendees travel arrangements.

Registration is compulsory and it must be done as soon as possible since limited seating availability.

Register for Islamabad event:
http://goo.gl/P90EH

Registration for Lahore event:
http://goo.gl/41u36

Registration for Karachi event:
http://goo.gl/cMXMB

For this year season, all mapping parties are named as MapUp events and all the social updates will be available through twitter hashtag #MapUp.

Agenda:
The events are more focused on practical work with no exact agenda defined hence better be called as unconference type sessions. However, a draft agenda to go along with is as follows:

14:30 – Registration at reception.
15:00 – Welcome note by Badar Khushnood (Google Country Consultant, Pakistan).
15:15 – Mapping success stories and usage summery by Map Maker advocates.
15:45 – Product Introduction – Q&A.
16:15 – Training & Lab Mapping.
18:00 – End note, feedback, networking & refreshment.

The agenda may change according to choice of attendees and mapping location may also be selected by attendees or by organisers.

Google has covered these events in their official Google Lat-Long Blog as “A Cause to Celebrate in Pakistan with Google Map Maker“.
