			<title>Design Guidelines for Horizontal Drains Used for Slope Stabilization</title>

Here's the report abstract:&lt;blockquote&gt;The presence of water is one of the most critical factors contributing to the instability of hillslopes. A common solution to stabilize hillslopes is installation of horizontal drains to decrease the elevation of the water table surface. Lowering the water table dries a large portion of the hillslope which increases the shear strength of the oil, thereby decreasing the probability of slope failure. The purpose of this manual is to provide a single comprehensive reference for geotechnical engineers and hydrogeologists on designing horizontal drainage systems to improve slope stability. Guidelines are provided for translational and rotational failure and consider fractured systems. Basics of hydrogeologic and geotechnical terminology, site characterization and conceptualization, groundwater modeling techniques and template projects help to guide the user with respect to identifying important parameters to drainage design. &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MOUNT AIRY, NC&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;mdash;A newly purchased 17-building apartment complex in Rolling Meadows, IL, built in the early 1960s, has seen plenty of tenants make their homes there. When new owners went about making renovations they discovered one 18,000 sq. ft. building suffering from voids in the soil beneath the slabs ranging from five inches to almost two feet in diameter caused by the stratified compacting of the historically hydric wetlands sedimentary soil, and water and sewer main breaks over the years. The voids caused some uneven floors and left the door open for future problems like mold.&lt;/p&gt;

			<title>Using the Existing Pavement In-Place and Achieving Long Life</title>

&lt;p&gt;TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Renewal Project R23 has released a prepublication, non-edited version of a report titled Using the Existing Pavement In-Place and Achieving Long Life that describes a procedure for identifying when existing pavements can be used in place as part of the rehabilitation solution and the methods necessary to incorporate the original material into the new pavement structure while achieving long life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In addition to the report, Renewal Project R23 also developed an interactive computer software program that helps users through the decision process. 			<title>USGS Topo Data on the Go</title>

The USGS is not producing apps, but they are making the data available to developers. They highlight two Android apps using the data:&lt;blockquote&gt;Currently, two Android applications are using USGS data, OruxMaps (http://www.oruxmaps.com/index_en.html) and AlpineQuest (http://alpinequest.psyberia.net/). These apps include USGS services in the list of available online maps.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The most likely candidate for an app for iOS is called Galileo. It sounds like you need to do some legwork before using the apps.  They discuss a Java-Based open source project that allows you to create "mobile atlases" on your desktop PC or Mac based on USGS maps at various scales that you can transfer to various mobile apps to take the maps with you on your device for use when you are outside cell phone coverage. The program you need is called Mobile Atlas Creator. There are some basic instructions in the &lt;a href="http://geoprac.net/s/1c1" target="_blank"&gt;full USGS Press Release&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;p&gt;The GBA posted recently about a study from the US Army Corps that suggest geoprofessionals will be kept busy for years to come. The study is in the same vein as other infrastructure studies that indicate additional funding is needed for the maintenance and operation of the Nation's dams, levees, navigational structures and hydro-electric facilities. The National Research Council performed the study, and one of their key conclusions was that partnerships between state and local government and even private industry may provide additional revenue options. The GBA summary is definitely worth reading, and they rightly conclude that the majority of the work on the vast network of Corps infrastructure will require the services of geoprofessionals. The geotechnical investigation for Crossrail included rock coring, and some 561 pallets of core are going to be stored inside the mined out portion of a salt mine in Cheshire.  The temperature and humidity levels remain consistent year-round making it an ideal place to store the core. According to the NCE article, this material is less than half of the core drilled during the investigation phase of the project. &lt;p&gt;Dimitrios at Deep Excavation LLC wrote this article a couple of months ago for his monthly newsletter. He contends that for multi-level braced excavations, the AASHTO LRFD code could produce unconservative results.  From his article:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;The currently adopted design methods for AASHTO (2010) LRFD appear to produce inconsistent and possibly unsafe designs for many multi-level braced excavations. Limit-equilibrium analyses combined with LRFD methods appear to severely underestimate benchmarked wall bending moments. For this reason, analyses in this paper suggest that limit-equilibrium methods should not be used to design the wall bending resistance for multi-level-braced excavations.&lt;/blockquote&gt;

			<title>Landslide Insurance Very Rare</title>

Most geoprofessionals realize that home-owners insurance does not cover landslides, floods or most other geologic hazards.  But what I found interesting in this article was a quote from an insurance agent that gave a rough estimate of the cost of "very rare" landslide insurance.  He gave an estimate of $1,000 per year for a $300,000 house.  I'm sure it depends on lots of factors, but at least that could get you in the ballpark. 			<description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;22nd April 2013, Redditch, UK&lt;/strong&gt; - Keynetix are pleased to announce that an upgrade to KeyLAB has been released today that includes a number of new features requested by users to help them manage their geotechnical and concrete laboratory. The new build expands the functionality of the system to assist laboratory managers who are conducting concrete testing, working in a NATA accredited laboratory or with the ASTM standards and is available free of charge to all users who have an in-date maintenance agreement.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As well as the new features in this release, KeyLAB have produced a large number of free test definitions and input and report sheets for companies who are implementing KeyLAB within a laboratory, conducting tests to BS or ASTM standards. These worksheets and reports have been designed by Peter Keeton from Keynetix, who has over 30 years experience of managing large geotechnical laboratories.&lt;/p&gt;

			<title>Geophysics successfully detects void beneath Missouri Taxiway</title>

Wheeler airport in Kansas City, MO were concerned about a leaking CMP joint 22-feet beneath the taxiway. The sand that was coming through the joint was detected on a video inspection of the culvert. They were concerned about possible voids above the leak and commissioned a geophysical survey. Two geophysical methods were used, ground penetrating radar and multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW).  The void was detected using the methods, and subsequent excavation of the airport taxiway confirmed the presence of the voids with about the same dimensions as what was indicated by the geophysics. 			<title>Video: Accelerated bridge construction Iowa DOT project</title>

&lt;p&gt;This video for the Massena Lateral Bridge Slide from Iowa DOT shows a very nice 3D rendering of the entire accelerated bridge construction process. They are using a lateral slide method to construct the bridge adjacent to the existing one and then slide it into place within 9 days. &amp;nbsp;From a geotechnical perspective, this bridge will be founded on driven piles, and then pre-cast abutment caps with CMP block-outs will be placed over the piles and the block-outs grouted up. &amp;nbsp;The wingwalls will also be precast with the CMP block-outs and supported on driven piles as well. &amp;nbsp;There will also be a driven pile temporary support structure, and driven piles will be used for the reaction frame to attach the threaded anchor rod used to jack the bridge into place.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) recently christened a new Tunnel Boring Machine 'Lady Bird' in honor of former first lady Claudia Alta 'Lady Bird' Taylor Johnson. The roughly 23-ft diameter TBM will tunnel a total of over 24,000 feet at a depth of 100 feet below the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers as part of a DC Water project aimed at reducing combined sewer outfalls. &lt;a href="http://www.geoprac.net/geonews-mainmenu-63/64-project-related/571-12-miles-of-tunnels-for-dc-sewer"&gt;I first posted about this project, including a Google Map of the route a few years back&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;blockquote&gt;TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Research Results Digest 380: Guidelines for Geofoam Applications in Slope Stability Projects explores the use of expanded polystyrene-block geofoam for slope stabilization projects. For the purpose of the report, slope stabilization projects include new roadways as well as repair of existing roadways that have been damaged by slope instability or slope movement.&lt;/blockquote&gt;

			<title>Massive landslide at Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah</title>

The landslide occured on April 10, 2013 at around 9:30 pm in the northeast pit wall.  The slide had been actively monitored for some time, and prior to the failure, the rate of movement did increase significantly and all employees were safely evacuated.  No word on volume estimates at this point, but the flow of ore has stopped until the cleanup has taken place. 			<title>Bertha tunnel-boring machine arrives in Seattle</title>

Hitachi Zosen Corp built the 57 foot diameter TBM and tested it before disassembling it for the journey by boat to the Port of Seattle.  Bertha will soon begin it's 16 month journey to bore a tunnel to replace the famous Alaskan Way Viaduct along Seattle's waterfront. 			<title>Geopier ground improvement supports plant to turn cheese byproducts into green energy</title>

&lt;p&gt;Green energy from cheese? That's right, whey is not just for Miss Muffett I guess.  In 2011, Foundation Service Corporation, the licensed installer of GeoPier GP3&amp;trade; systems in Wisconsin installed over 1,600 GeoPier elements to stiffen the poor subgrade soils at a GreenWhey Energy plant under construction in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;Upon completion this summer, the plant will take byproducts from cheese production and use it to create biogas, heat and clean water.  According to GreenWhey the biogas will eventually generate enough electricity to power 3,000 homes.  Renewable energy from cheese.&lt;/blockquote&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Key Points From The Report Include:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;The Ledgewood-Bonair Landslide (LB Landslide) On Whidbey Island, Island County, Washington Occurred Around 3:45 Am On March 27, 2013.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;It Is A Small Portion Of A Much Larger Landslide Complex, Approximately 1.5 Miles Long, That Was Prehistoric And May Date Back As Far As 11,000 Years.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;The Top Of The Landslide Scarp Averages 200 Feet Above Sea Level.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;The Landslide Pushed (Uplifted) The Beach As High As 30 Feet Above The Shore.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;The Toe (Front Of Landslide At The Beach) Is Slightly Over 1,100 Feet Long And Extends Approximately 300 Feet Into Puget Sound.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Uplift Of The Beach Is Presumed To Have Been Relatively Slow (I.E., Over A Few Minutes).&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Wave And Tidal Action Is Actively Eroding The Toe With Small Sections (1-10 Cubic Feet) Observed Calving With The Rising Tide.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;The Volume Of Material Moved Was Approximately 200,000 Cubic Yards (Equivalent To 40,000 Dump Truck Loads).&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;DNR Geologic Mapping From 2009 Shows The Extent Of The Landslide Complex (Polenz And Others, 2009,Http://Www.Dnr.Wa.Gov/Publications/Ger_gm68_geol_map_camano_24k.Pdf ).&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Where observed, the access road has been shifted approximately 80 feet down vertically and to the west.&lt;/li&gt;

			<title>Man swallowed by a Sinkhole in Shenzhen city, China</title>

The video indicated that residents complained of vibrations or tremors from a nearby construction site prior to the accident. 			<title>Drills break through into busy London rail tunnel</title>

Fortunately the train drivers noticed and reported the damage before any serious accident occurred.  The busy First Capital Connect route was shut down for several days for an investigation and repairs. 			<description>&lt;p&gt;California motorists can now avoid a dangerous and landslide-prone stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, Devil&amp;rsquo;s Slide, through the tunnel bypass. This project has been a fascination of mine since the early days of GeoPrac.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;rsquo;s fun to see it finally complete!&lt;/p&gt;

			<title>Study: Port of Alaska Sheet Piles Have Design Flaws</title>

			<description>&lt;img src="http://www.geoprac.net/images/stories/mob/13-03-26_0823_b8f76219892a4ac68b2e682db350f736.jpeg.jpg" height="167" width="250" align="left" style="border: 0px none ; margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; display: inline;" alt="The Port of Anchorage in 2010" title="The Port of Anchorage in 2010" &gt;&lt;p&gt;A study by CH2M Hill commissioned by the Municipality of Anchorage found that the partially constructed open-cell sheet pile system is "not adequately designed to meet global stability and seismic displacements based on the design criteria."  The results of the $2.2M study by CH2M Hill are documented in two reports and the findings were presented to a March 8 Anchorage Assembly meeting. The Municipality will now hire a third party to review the reports and CH2M Hill's recommendations for how to complete the project.  The new design could cost up to $600M to construct. The Municipality took the project over in 2011 from the U.S. Maritime Administration after damage to some sheet piling was encountered. 			<title>Calibration of Resistance Factors for Drilled Shafts for the New FHWA Design Method</title>

Here is the abstract: &lt;blockquote&gt;The Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) calibration of deep foundation in Louisiana was first completed for driven piles (LTRC Final Report 449) in May 2009 and then for drilled shafts using 1999 FHWA design method (Oâ€™Neill and Reese method) (LTRC Final Report 470) in September 2010. As a continuing effort to implement the LRFD design methodology for deep foundations in Louisiana, this report will present the reliability-based analyses for the calibration of the resistance factor for LRFD design of axially loaded drilled shafts using Brown et al. method (2010 FHWA design method). Twenty-six drilled shaft tests collected from previous research (LTRC Final Report 449) and eight new drilled shaft tests were selected for statistical reliability analysis; the predictions of total, side, and tip resistance versus settlement behavior of drilled shafts were established from soil borings using both 1999 FHWA design method (Brown et al. method) and 2010 FHWA design method (Oâ€™Neill and Reese method). The measured drilled shaft axial nominal resistance was determined from either the Osterberg cell (O-cell) test or the conventional top-down static load test. For the 30 drilled shafts that were tested using O-cells, the tip and side resistances were deduced separately from test results. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the predicted total, tip, and side drilled shaft nominal axial resistance with the corresponding measured nominal resistance. Results of this showed that the 2010 FHWA design method overestimates the total drilled shaft resistance by an average of two percent, while the 1999 FHWA design method underestimates the total drilled shaft resistance by an average of 21 percent. The Monte Carlo simulation method was selected to perform the LRFD calibration of resistance factors of drilled shaft under strength I limit state. The total resistance factors obtained at different reliability index (Beta) were determined and compared with those available in literature. Results of reliability analysis, corresponding to a target reliability index (Beta) of 3.0, reveals resistance factors for side (Phi-side), tip (Phi-tip), and total resistance factor (Phi-total) are 0.26, 0.53, and 0.48, respectively for the 2010 FHWA design method and 0.39, 0.52, and 0.60, respectively for the 1999 FHWA design method.
