GRCers in RED BOLD

As is often the case, the title was a nail biter. Using the Moreland Racing Factor for Elite Champion got a score of 93 and our runner-up had 95.

Daniel Too (33) of Elkton, MD was impressive with a tough field in the Bel Air Town 5K winning in 14:44, followed by his second place finish at Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 15:09 where he was bested by Demesse Tefera (27) of Silver Spring, MD who took the gold in this first of four overall wins in 14:33. Tefera also added a solid 14:57 win at the African American Heritage Festival 5K on the 4^th of July.

Too was not far off the course record at the Rockville Twilight 8K winning in 23:53. That put him ahead of tenth place Dirk Van de Heer who was second in 24:46 and Jeff Gaudette who finished third in 24:51 and eleventh place Guy Alton who was fourth in 24:57.

The following week, Tefera beat a tough crowd at the Crystal City Twilighter 5K winning in 14:35. The race also included seventh place (former champion) Gurmessa Megressa who was third in 14:56 and ninth place Abiyot Abebe who was fourth in 15:00, as well as De Heer who came in fifth in 15:04.

The final weekend Too had an adequate 31:34 to finish second overall at the Knights of Columbus 10K behind Jeff Gaudette's 31:06. Tefera took the top spot against the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K field in 14:31 that same day to win the title.

David Cheromei of Marion, VA finishes fourth this period with two wins at the 5K: FAB Cross Country 5K in 14:55 and Coast Guard Day 5K in 15:01.

Fifth place Mouchine Outaleb won it all at the Dundalk Heritage 6K in 18:08, Kipchirchir Bitok is sixth racing the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile to victory in 35:20. Eighth place, Dave Berdan, was right behind him in 35:36.

Fifty-eight men earned a place in the Elite rankings.

Possible new addition to GRC Club XC Championships squad

Hey guys,
I got a call yesterday from a former teammate and friend Ryan Blood (Lock Haven University 08'). He heard from our coach at LHU that I was running with the Georgetown Running Company at the USATF Club XC Champs in Lexington, KY. Ryan wants to run for us and said he will do whatever he needs to do to get on the team. He is not local... He lives in Harrisburg, Pa. and recently just got back from a 5 week stay in Alamosa, CO. training with the Team STRANDS group as well as Adams State XC team. Ryan could improve our depth even greater than it already is... I told him that I would talk to Jake as well as the rest of the team. I know that he would have to be a member of our club for at least some time before the event and probably have to run at least 1 or 2 races with our team (I may be talking out of my A$$ with that but I thought I saw something on the blog about that months ago)..

14:02 5,000 meter
3:47 1500 meter
49:28 for 10 miles (USA 10 mile champs)

Hey team,

Great run today by those at Riley's this morning. Congrats to Jake on passing the bar too! I just wanted to let you guys know I'm excited for the Winter. I'm looking forward to getting organized with the training and coming into good shape. I hope a lot of people can make it to BCC on Wednesday; I'll be there. Come out to get in some work and welcome Wiggy back onto the team. I'm pumped for Nationals too. I want to talk to the guys running to come up with a plan for the next month to get ready for the race. I will also be contacting the Bethesda crew to get together for a few morning runs. Happy running!

As I know many of you, there are some that are probably wondering who the hell is this Joe Wiggy character that has stalker-like comments to various posts on the GRC blog. I ran for the club for a short stint back in 2006-2007. After 2007, I moved back to the philadelphia area (where I am orginally from) to seek a teaching job at my old high school. That didn't go as planned and was something I regretted months after leaving the D.C/MD area. I coached my old high school team in PA for one season of XC, Indoor and Outdoor Track. As fun as that was and how I gained much from the experience, I knew that this was the time to go back where I found success as a teacher (with a stable job...Why would I leave a stable job in this economy... I still wonder what I was thinking). I got rehired at the same middle school I was at in 06-07 in gaithersburg, which is awesome!
Now that I am back in the area, I have had a lot of time to reflect on my running goals for the future. I have the plan set for a march marathon at Shamrock in VA Beach on the 21st of March. Leading up to that, my first key race will be at the USATF Club XC Champs in Lexington, KY (with the GRC Crew). I love XC and I am really excited for that one. Along with that, I am still trying to figure out a 1/2 marathon option for Jan/early Feb... If anyone has any ideas for 1/2 marathons at that time... I would love to hear them.
I look forward to seeing the GRCers I haven't seen yet upon my return and I am also looking forward to meeting those who joined the team after i left the area.

I just read Jake Klim's running blog and his latest post is called "the Comeback". Jake, what are you coming back from? A week off?

Try taking two months off and just enjoying having no routine or forced impetus to run and push the bod.

I have taken three weeks off and will take more. Not really because I want to but rather to see what time off of years of physical exertion will do to heal the body/mind and soul.

the body is far more powerful than the mind and it needs so many nutrients to not only survive but thrive.

Sit on a beach, look at the sun and soak up the best that life has to offer is sometimes the best way to live. In other words do nothing and enjoy it.

Life/Like running, has so many dimensions

NEWSFLASH: REAVES WINS RALEIGH MARATHON!

RALEIGH For 20 miles or so, Patrick Reaves, 24, didn't think he had a chance.

But in the most challenging part of the City of Oaks Marathon, on a wet, cold and gusty Sunday morning, Reaves, a graduate student at Duke, finally brought the race's leader into his sights, and he found new life in the muddy hills of Umstead State Park.

He took the lead and never looked back, and with a time of 2:33:03, Reaves finished ahead of Orinthal Striggles of Elgin, S.C., (2:38:23) and Nicholas Robin of Durham (2:39:37).

"It feels amazing," Reeves said of his first marathon win. "Honestly, I thought I was running for second.

"I didn't see the guy in first place until 20 miles into it. He was falling off pretty fast."

The conditions were far from ideal for the event, in its third year. It was rainy and in the 50s when the race started, and there were wind gusts as roughly 3,500 runners picked up speed at the starting line.

Reaves said he never considered not running because of the weather, even as he said he has never run in such bad conditions, which was a common refrain.

He said when he saw that he could win, he found new legs, ignoring the wind in his face and powering over the steep, slippery hills of Umstead.

He said he ran his fastest five miles at race's end.

"The course was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be," Reaves said. "I was really trying to stay patient, patient, patient.

"In the end, it paid off."

Workout this week

This is my last week of buildup before taper for the Philly Marathon. (Is this race ever going to actually happen?)

I am looking to do 4 by 2 miles with a lap jog for rest, starting at 10:40 (and hopefully not getting slower).

First off, is anyone interested in doing this workout, or part of this workout? The second thing is that I have assignments Wednesday and Thursday evenings, so I am hoping to do it either one of those mornings or perhaps Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Let me know if there is any interest.

Sunday Run - Watching MCM

Hey all,

Some of us plan to watch the race go by the store and do our long run from there. We plan to be at the store at 8:45 to see the GRCers run by, and will start the run at 9:15. Plan ahead for some difficult parking/road closures.

Dylan has offered to host a brunch at his place near the finish line if anyone is interested.
