Chris Dolan is an Atlanta based, American artist, who began and established her career in France. She exhibited and is in collections throughout Europe. Her work is characterized as abstract expressionism, but with references to the human form. The formation of her artistic style in Europe gives the work a totally different feel than American expressionists.

What is interesting is that Chris was represented by Skot Forman in his Atlanta gallery, one of the first and foremost galleries in Castleberry Hill. Hence the title of the show, Full Circle, with the return of Chris Dolan's work to the Castleberry Hill art district.

Gallery 4463 July Exhibit: Works in pastels by Susan Gore Gardner and Suzie Majikol-Maier

Susan Gore Gardner and Suzie Majikol-Maier are showing their pastel works at Gallery 4463 for the month of July. Gore Gardner creates "affectionate landscapes of the South" in her pastels. The Bremen, Georgia resident has had her colorful works exhibited in galleries all over Georgia. Malaysian-born Majikol-Maier is an impressionist who finds her inspiration in the natural wildlife, Native Americans, and the landscapes of the American Southwest. Majikol-Maier has exhibited her works in Asia, the UK, as well as in the US. Please join us for the opening on Friday, July 9th from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The show runs through Sunday, August 1st. Admission is always free.

During the month of June, Gallery 4463 will host “"Personal Reflections on War: Selected works by WWII Veterans Jack Smith and Bronislaw Bak”. Jack Smith, a retired graphic artist who resides in Acworth, served our country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Hopping from 1943 to 1946. Bronislaw Bak (1922-1981), a respected artist and educator, served as a cadet in the Polish Army. He was captured by the Germans during their invasion of Poland and spent the remainder of the war as a P.O.W. The exhibit runs through Sunday, July 4th.

Gallery 4463 is Acworth’s Premier Fine Arts Sales Gallery and represents the works of over 35 artists from Atlanta and North Georgia. The gallery is located at 4463 Cherokee Street in the heart of historic downtown Acworth, across the railroad tracks and less than a mile from I-75. Gallery 4463 is in a prominent brick and glass two-story building that features 14-foot-high ceilings and a spacious interior, and is a space uniquely suited for a full-size gallery. The gallery is operated by a group of professional artists who are committed to the idea of creating a quality fine arts gallery that is unique: a resource for professional artists, a center for fine arts in our town and community and ultimately a magnet for art patrons from all over north Georgia.

This exhibit showcases abstract oil paintings by Denise Wellenstein and figurative work by Kimberly Dean. Wellenstein’s paintings are a process of exploration of color that rely on design elements, shapes, composition, contrast and texture to give depth, character and energy to the colors. Dean’s work combines clay and mixed media while using recycled and old materials. Her current work focuses on the worlds of emotion beneath the surface, and the pieces show the interplay between body and spirit, creating a visually awkward moment. This exhibit premieres Saturday, July 24 and runs through August 14.

Midtown Festival of the Arts debuts

Atlantans who love the area’s many festivals will have a new one to add to the social calendar this year -- Midtown Festival of the Arts.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Midtown Festival of the Arts Inc. on Thursday revealed details about the new neighborhood arts festival, which will highlight Midtown Atlanta’s diverse arts and entertainment offerings.

The festival will be along Peachtree Street between 5th Street and 10th Street on Sept. 25-26. The road nicknamed the “Midtown Mile” will be temporarily transformed into an artist market with up to 100 visual artists, stages for performing arts, children’s art offerings, and a culinary arts area featuring chef demonstrations, special tastings and retail booths.

The festival also will have a family-friendly kid zone, Midtown Mile Road Race, a public art display and auction, a planned beer garden and other festival attractions such as street performers and film presentations.

Audi is the event’s presenting sponsor. The Loews Atlanta Hotel, Terrapin and The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) are official sponsors. The Margaret Mitchell House is the cultural alliance sponsor. Dali painting to go to Atlanta on loan

The Dali picture is to go on loan to Atlanta

A famous Salvador Dali painting depicting Jesus on the cross is to go on loan to the US.

The Christ of St John of the Cross will be away from its permanent home at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow for six months from July.

It will be part of a retrospective on the artist's life in Atlanta.

The painting has left the UK six times since it was bought for Glasgow's collection in 1952. Its last outing was to London's National Gallery in 2000.

Kelvingrove will be showing Titian's Diana and Actaeon in its place throughout July.

A conservation team at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre will carry out an examination of the painting before it is shipped to the US.

The Atlanta Collage Society (ACS) was formed in 2006 to foster the appreciation of and interest in the medium of collage, advance its stature as a major art medium, as well as assist in public education through exhibits, workshops and lectures in order to enhance the understanding, appreciation and value of collage in the world of fine art; and to support Atlanta area collage artists. ACS has recently welcomed assemblage artists as well. We currently have 75 members, meet bi-monthly, and are affiliated with the National Collage Society. ACS also partners with the Atlanta Artist Center for meeting space and joint workshops. ACS plans two juried shows each year. Georgia Art Exchange today announced the list of artists within the Atlanta Soccer Community who will be displaying their work at The Atlanta Soccer Artfest at the Blue Tower Gallery in downtown Atlanta May 22, 2010.

Online PR News – 12-May-2010 – The Atlanta Soccer Artfest will be celebrating the Champions League Final while promoting artists: Sergey Cherep, Jeff Lange, Austin McDonald, Andrew Rowe, Alan Vaughn, Thomas Waller and James Stewart II from the Atlanta soccer community. The Artfest will commence at 1pm game and will be presented live from Madrid, Spain at 2:30 pm.

Following the game, the Georgia Art Exchange, a local art group, will open the exhibit hall to the attendees. Metro Atlanta Artists from the soccer community will be exhibited at the event. "We are very thankful to Heineken USA, VIGO and our other sponsors for supporting the artists in our community." said QuiQue Lopez, Director of the Georgia Art Exchange. "Their help will go a long way to exposing the culturally rich expressions of these very talented artists to the rest of our community."

The artists' work will be available for sales at the event with all proceeds going to the artists and the ASA Artist Fund, a fund established to promote artists from the Atlanta soccer community. The Artfest will go through the afternoon and the evening with live music, DJs and other performers.

"This is going to be a wonderful event. The timing could not be better. For the first time, we will have the Champions League Final on a Saturday instead on a weekday." EMILY AMY GALLERY is pleased to present Re-purposed: The Use of Everyday Materials in Contemporary Art featuring gallery artists Sara Cole, Will Corr, Clayton Santiago, and Sherry Williams. The concept of utilizing found objects and ordinary household materials in contemporary art is not new. There is a strong lineage of artists, beginning with the Dadaists, who repurposed things never before considered 'art' and in turn gave them new life. By exploring media such as coffee, tar, sawdust, and rust, the participating artists express their ability to create seemingly traditional work with non-traditional materials.

Artist Prema Murthy gives an informal talk on her solo exhibition Breaking the Grid at 1pm. The Westside Arts District (WAD) is partnering with the West End WE Tour to bring you an art-filled Saturday west of downtown Atlanta. Ten Westside Arts District galleries will be open for viewing for the 3rd Saturday Art Walk while over 23 members of the West End Arts community at four venues open their doors to the public for The Second Annual West End Art and Studio Tour. Events such as artist talks, performances, demonstrations and a closing party take place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. All participating venues are free during Head West on May 15 although donations are welcome. Free parking is also available at each venue.

WAD participating venues include Astolfi Art, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Bobbe Gillis Gallery, Emily Amy Gallery, Get This! Gallery, Kiang Gallery, Octane Coffee Bar, SALTWORKS, Sandler Hudson Gallery, and Tanner Hill Gallery.

High Museum Selected to Present American Pavilion at 2010 Venice Biennale of Architecture

ATLANTA, May 6, 2010 – The High Museum of Art, along with its co-organizer 306090, Inc. has been selected to present the exhibition Workshopping: An American Model of Architectural Practice at the U.S. pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia, the 12th International Architecture Exhibition. La Biennale opens to the public on 29 August and is on view through 21 November 2010.

Workshopping explores the role of the trans-disciplinary collaborations in architecture, spotlighting seven architecture projects with a focus on research and social engagement. The architectural groups include:

• Archeworks design school (Chicago),
• cityLAB at UCLA/AUD with Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design (Los Angeles),
• Hood Design Studio (Oakland),
• Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample (MOS) (Cambridge and New Haven),
• Anthony Fontenot, Guy Nordenson, and Catherine Seavitt (Princeton, New Orleans and New York),
• John Portman & Associates (Atlanta), and
• Terreform led by Michael Sorkin (New York).

Workshopping is co-curated by Michael Rooks, Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum and Jonathan D. Solomon, founding editor of 306090 Books and Acting Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. The High Museum has partnered with 306090 to co-organize the exhibition, which will be designed by native Atlanta artist Danielle Roney. The U.S. Pavilion is presented by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, which supports and manages the official United States participation at selected international exhibitions.

For the American pavilion, Rooks and Solomon present the architect as a force for change. The exhibition highlights projects in which a designer identifies an urban problem or condition and initiates research into its foundation and potential solutions without prompting by a client assignment or proposal request. The designers then engage their design skills and insights to catalyze action.

“We wanted to use this platform to propose that architecture constitutes the shared space of ideas in research, social engagement, and public-private initiatives—the foundational values of American architectural practice,” said Michael Rooks.

"Workshopping assembles a group of architects who are actively redefining the role of the discipline, initiating collaborative projects which stake out exciting new territory. This includes experiments with new materials and structures to produce spaces for public enjoyment, research into how cities and regions can ensure social and environmental sustainability, and examples of how public-private partnerships can generate vibrant communities," said Jonathan Solomon.

The projects featured in the exhibition constitute a uniquely American model of architectural design and economic development, defined by a reliance on public and private sector collaborations and often aided by government, foundation, and non-profit support. The exhibition highlights the evolving relationship between designer, builder, and client in cities across America, as it focuses on projects and collaborations rather than individual practices, and on process and impact rather than product.

Following is an overview of the architectural groups that will be included in the exhibition Workshopping: An American Model of Architectural Practice at the U.S. pavilion this fall:

Archeworks—an alternative design school in Chicago co-directed by Martin Felsen and Sarah Dunn, and co-founded by Stanley Tigerman and Eva Maddox in 1993—has a history of advocating, designing and building public open spaces and community infrastructure in close collaboration with neighborhood residents, community non-profits, cultural institutions, and public/private partners. Archeworks' design projects, including the Mobile Food Collective, inspire collaborative action to imagine and invent healthier and ecologically sustainable cities.

cityLAB at UCLA/AUD—with Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design—has since 2006 supported a series of projects concerned with contemporary urban issues, urban design, and the architecture of the city. Specifically, cityLAB is charged “with exploring the challenges facing the 21st century metropolis through research and design, expanding the possibilities for our cities to grow more livable, sustainable, and beautiful.” Their Chia Mesa project marks the transformation of ubiquitous, but struggling strip malls into a prototype and a recovery strategy for Phoenix, Arizona in order to help the city develop a singular architectural image of its own.

Hood Design Studio—led by Walter Hood, a California-based urban landscape designer and artist and professor at U.C. Berkeley—continues its longtime focused research program with projects that consider the impact of greening on urban environments of different scales through public/private collaboration. Hood’s career as an academic has allowed him “to pick and choose projects,” a luxury he has exercised carefully and often polemically, working nearly exclusively in the public realm and often in the inner city. He proactively seeks projects for the chance to create spaces that serve newly evolving public uses and opportunities that help knit together diverse communities through new thinking about open public spaces.

MOS—a dynamic young firm led by architects Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample—has completed a number of installation scale projects for public and private institutions including the 2009 MoMA PS1 Warm-Up Pavilion, Afterparty, and a temporary puppet theater for conceptual artist Pierre Huyghe at the Carpenter Center at Harvard University. Sample and Meredith are recognized as leaders of a younger generation of architects for whom multidisciplinary research approaches are second nature. Their work combines materials research, innovative structural forms, and social engagement to create spaces for urban enjoyment. MOS will create a site-specific installation in the courtyard of the American Pavilion that will provide a space for social interaction and dialogue.

Anthony Fontenot, Guy Nordenson and Catherine Seavitt are working to apply their years of research to push the development of soft infrastructure alternatives to the conventional hard engineering storm and flood mitigation approaches still holding sway in New Orleans and elsewhere. The collaborative initiative of Nordenson, Seavitt and Adam Yarinsky (ARO), winners of the 2007 American Institute of Architects’ Latrobe Prize, which resulted in the acclaimed book On the Water: Palisades Bay, along with research on the New York Upper Harbor at the Princeton University and on New Orleans by Fontenot (Exposing New Orleans) and the LSU Coastal Sustainability Studio (CSS), have been harnessed to model storm surge and flooding to evaluate the effectiveness and opportunities of break waters, islands, wetlands and other 'soft' storm barriers.

John Portman & Associates—an Atlanta based firm—sets the standard for an initiative based approach to architectural design with its Peachtree Center project. Still evolving with new buildings and open spaces, Peachtree Center illustrates how a design-led business can create a positive and powerful effect on the stability and growth of a city. Portman represents a unique model of practice, wherein the architect directly engages contextual socioeconomic drivers and responds by purchasing and assembling land, financing and designing the buildings, infrastructure and public spaces that define the project. The result in the case of Peachtree Center is a sixteen block project that serves as a significant network of social spaces and economic engine for the city of Atlanta.

Terreform—led by Michael Sorkin—undertakes self-initiated investigations into local and global issues and works on independent environmental planning initiatives on behalf of raised expectations and enlarged debate. Its New York City (Steady) State is an ongoing research project that asks if New York City can become completely self-sufficient within its political boundaries. The study aims to produce not simply a dramatic new plan for the future of New York but to compile an inventory of best practices and morphologies that are relevant to cities around the world.

La Biennale di Venezia
La Biennale di Venezia has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Ever since its foundation in 1895, it has promoted contemporary culture, new ideas, and artistic trends through major international exhibitions. High Museum of Art

Atlantans win Working Artist Project awards

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia has selected Atlanta artists Katherine Mitchell, Micah Stansell and Alan Caomin Xie as recipients of the 2010-11 MOCA GA Working Artists Project.
The winners will receive a $12,000 stipend, a paid studio assistant for up to 300 hours, an exhibition at MOCA GA (with accompanying catalog) and a place in its permanent collection, among other benefits.
The juried awards, supported by the Charles Loridans Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, were launched in 2007 in response to a talent drain of Atlanta artists moving to larger cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
“As a museum that is dedicated first and foremost to supporting Georgia’s contemporary artists, it is our goal to encourage these artists to remain in our city, establishing Atlanta as one of the best cities for launching a viable career in the arts,” MOCA GA director Annette Cone-Skelton said in a statement.
Mitchell is a retired Emory University art professor with work included in the Georgia Council for the Arts’ recently published book, “Georgia Masterpieces: Selected Works from Georgia Museums.”
Stansell is a filmmaker and installation artist whose videos have been screened in galleries and at film festivals across the United States and internationally. His exhibit with his wife, Whitney Stansell, “Past, Present, Continuous” is on view at Whitespace through May 15. They will give a talk at the Inman Park gallery at 3 p.m. May 8.
Xie, who was born in China, has worked in the U.S. since 1999. A Clayton State University art instructor, his “Still Image” series of oil paintings reference electronic media, capturing what he calls “the metonymy between different images.”

We would like to invite you to take part in an Atlanta-based art show, presented by Vespermann-Cooper Gallery. We’re highlighting the work of artists in the Southeast. The show is entitled ‘Southeastern Art Celebration’ and is scheduled to open May 21^st and 22^nd. Among the artists who have already agreed to join is Shane Fero, President of the Glass Art Society.

As a glass artist, in 1984 I opened the Vespermann Glass Gallery. In early 2009, I took on a new business partner, Jeannie Cooper, and subsequently renamed the gallery, Vespermann-Cooper Gallery. At this time we also introduced paintings to the gallery. We plan, with this show, to expand our collection of artworks with fiber, wood, metal, ceramics and jewelry.

We have researched your work and have selected you to participate in our show because of the quality inherent in your craft.
