Or Not?

/PRNewswire/ -- You may have seen the billboards posted nationwide or the person on a street corner standing with a sign – all proclaiming "Judgment Day, May 21." The question is should you prepare yourself for reckoning or live your days as you normally do?

"Many people in today's culture are fascinated by the end of the world," said Miguel De La Torre, Professor of Social Ethics, Iliff School of Theology. "If you give enough leeway and imagination and you provide enough Scripture, you can predict almost anything. Whether or not it will happen on a particular day is a different story."

While May 21 is the latest purported date for Judgment Day, Professor De La Torre points out that there have been many dates singled out in the past.

"In this case, individuals have determined that May 21 is 7,000 years after the flood in the story of Noah's Ark. It's pure speculation, since there is no way to determine exactly when the flood mentioned in the Bible was a regional flood, if there was a flood, how long it took to subside, etc., " commented De La Torre. "It doesn't take a lot to look at dates and times to construct these types of scenarios. It's been going on before there was a Jesus."

So, should we heed the warnings proclaimed by signs and billboards?

"If I knew for certainty that I was going to die this weekend, then the mark of a good life is to live the last days of my life like I lived all the other days up to this point. My advice would be to 'be at peace,'" added De La Torre. "No one knows when the world will end. It could end up May 21 this year, next year, or a hundred or a thousand years from now. We don't know. What we do know is that people who have taken predictions of the last day of the earth and did all matters of things that could not be undone, that their lives were destroyed. One needs to be careful not to fall into that trap."
Get Inspired by Bible's Story of Job, Says Gregory Jones, Author of 'Job - A Man for His Time, A Man for Our Time, A Man for All Time'

/PRNewswire/ -- The timeless Biblical story of Job has lessons that can help businesspeople and investors thrive and succeed in these difficult economic times, according to Gregory Jones, author of the Amazon best-selling book, "Job--A Man for His Time, A Man for Our Time, A Man for All Time." http://www.jobthebook.net/

"Job was the richest man on earth. He was perfect. He feared God," said Jones, doctor of divinity and chairman of Golden Gate Finance, LLC, of Atlanta, a company that underwrites loans for churches. "Even people of wealth and power and great substance can lose it all, but don't have to lose their integrity by bending the rules. Job had integrity. He acknowledged the Lord and the Lord gave him wealth."

Job is the epic story of suffering, destruction and redemption that can inspire people who are going through hardships, he said.

Here are highlights of the book that can help anyone survive hard times.

* On wealth and prosperity: "Job was not impressed with his wealth. He had no pride or arrogance about his wealth," said Jones. "Today, the emphasis we hold on material possessions is what cripples our focus from the real blessings we hold by God's favor. But Job said: 'God gave me all these things.' When Job lost his wealth he didn't lose faith. Instead, he said: 'Blessed is the Lord.'"
* On adversity: "Job didn't blame others, consider suicide or curse God," Jones said. "Job said 'Although you slay me, I will trust in thee.'"
* On humility: "Job was humble. He understood that all wealth and power comes from the Lord. Until you build treasures in heaven, you cannot have wealth in this earth," Jones said.
* On short-term thinking: "Your desires must meet up with God's desires, then you can run the race to win," he said.
* On suffering: "Who hasn't gone through some test of confidence of faith in their family, their job or their health? This is the mystery of life. If we just hold on, then you can make it," he said. "The struggle is the key to get to the triumph. When you are in the smothering ashes of despair, you have to do an introspection. When we change our attitude toward suffering, we can conquer it."

About the Book

Jones made a vow to write the book after he was on his deathbed, a victim of an undiagnosed leak in his appendix that turned his body toxic. Doctors said he wouldn't last the night.

"I said, 'Lord, if you give me another shot, I will write this book on Job,'" he said. When the doctors returned in the morning, Jones was on the road to recovery.

"You can be blessed no matter what you are going through. Going through suffering, pain, disappointment, despair, you can still maintain the character and integrity of Job," said Jones, who spent seven years writing the book.

The book has sold well on Amazon and is available in soft copy and on Kindle.

"Dr. Jones' book is excellent devotional literature for all. The author takes the reader through such likely experiences in a person's life journey using brother Job's case to teach his audience heavenly lessons," said His Eminence Dr. Sunday Mbang, Past Chairperson, World Methodist Council.

"I enjoy his enthusiasm and positive outlook on life. I appreciated the way that he's able to bring out the inspirational aspects of the story," said Cristy Lane, International C&W/Gospel Artist.

He is planning a 60-city tour to promote the book by speaking in churches and bookstores. To arrange for Mr. Jones to speak in your city, please contact him at Genevabooks1@aol.com.

To see the list of tour dates, please go to http://www.jobthebook.net/.

Mr. Jones has been invited to speak in London and Nairobi.

/PRNewswire/ -- Zondervan, the world's leading Bible publisher, today reported its NIV Bible eBook featuring the updated New International Version of the Bible (NIV), is the company's fastest-selling eBook, and broke into the USA Today bestsellers list spanning all books. Zondervan said the NIV eBook, which released Dec. 15, 2010 featuring the updated NIV text, sold twice as many copies compared with the same period last year.

The NIV Bible (www.TheNIVBible.com) made its debut as the #1 eBook in the Religion & Spirituality Category of Apple's iBookstore and rose to #7 for all books on Apple. It is currently among the Top 100 in Amazon's Kindle Store, and a Top 25 eBook in Barnes & Noble's Nookbook Store. The digital release marks the first time that a new Bible translation has launched in a digital format prior to publication in a print format.

"The publishing industry broke numerous records this year with eBook sales, and we are proud that the NIV Bible was among the bestsellers during the Christmas season," said Moe Girkins, president and CEO of Zondervan. "We are encouraged by this early enthusiasm for the updated NIV text and anticipate continued momentum as we introduce additional digital NIV products leading up to the print launch in March 2011."

Alongside the eBook launch Zondervan initiated the Christmas BUY ONE, GIVE ONE campaign. For every digital copy of the updated NIV Bible sold through Jan. 4, 2011, Zondervan and Biblica donated a Hindi New Testament to a family in India. Biblica is the worldwide publisher and translation sponsor of the NIV Bible and a global Bible translation, publishing and Bible engagement ministry. Biblica expects to donate nearly 20,000 copies of the all-new Hindi translation of the New Testament.

"The mission of the NIV has always been about making God's word accessible," said Keith Danby, international CEO of Biblica. "Every time someone buys an NIV, a percentage of the money they spend is set aside to support Biblica's global Bible translation ministry. The BUY ONE, GIVE ONE campaign brings a new element to this outreach by tying in a one-for-one donation to a region of the world in need of receiving God's Word in their language."

The Bible is the bestselling book in history and the NIV Bible is the bestselling version year after year, selling more than 400 million copies since its first full publication in 1978. Following the launch of the newly designed NIV eBook, Zondervan plans to continue to release several new NIV eBooks, apps and digital products by the end of 2011. Print products featuring the updated NIV are scheduled for release in March 2011.

The NIV update was completed in the fall of 2010 after years of rigorous translation work by the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT – www.NIV-CBT.org). The CBT was formed in 1965 to create a modern English Bible translation from the oldest and best-attested biblical manuscripts. Since the most recent NIV update in 1984, the CBT has continued to meet every year in accordance with the NIV charter, which requires constant monitoring of developments in biblical scholarship and English usage and the reflection of these developments in periodic updates to the text. The members of CBT, drawn from various denominations and from some of the finest academic institutions in the world, solicited and received input from scholars, pastors, missionaries and lay persons and reviewed every proposal, many of which led to revisions to the text.

"People are telling us they would love to see the Word of God be #1 on the best-seller lists, and it is exciting and humbling to see their love for the updated NIV achieve that. The Bible is in fact the best-selling book of all time and sells more than any other book every year, but the sales are diluted between multiple English translations and bindings," said Chip Brown, senior vice president and publisher of Bibles at Zondervan. "Millions of people unwrapped an iPad, Kindle, Nook or other e-reader during the holiday season, leading to an industry-wide spike in eBook sales, and we are delighted that the NIV Bible was among consumers' most desired eBooks to download."

Zondervan was the first publisher to have Bibles available in Apple's iBookstore at the launch of the iPad. In total, the company has published more than 30 Bible titles for eBook readers, including the iPad, Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, etc. The NIV Study Bible consistently ranks among Zondervan's top digital products.

"I am amazed every time I think of how many years the Lord has given me on this earth," Mr. Graham said. "I am grateful for His blessing on our ministry for more than six decades, but wonder if there is something more He has for me to accomplish."

In addition to work on a book project on the ageing process that he has been writing over the last few years, Mr. Graham continues to attend Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) Board meetings as he is able. This year marked a milestone anniversary for the organization he founded in Minneapolis sixty years ago. "The Hour of Decision" with Billy Graham – one of Christian radio's longest running programs – also turned 60 this week, and continues to broadcast in five languages in 55 countries on six continents.

"I always enjoy hearing the reports from ongoing BGEA evangelistic events, including festivals held by my son, Franklin, and celebrations conducted by my grandson, Will," Mr. Graham said. "Under Franklin's leadership, the ministry has reached new audiences in new ways I would never have dreamed, incorporating many modern technologies and creative strategies to share the same message of God's love around the world."

Mr. Graham has had a busy year since his last birthday, in which he has hosted various friends, family and ministry colleagues in his log cabin home in western North Carolina, and has received personal visits from several national political leaders. These include former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin late last November, and President Barack Obama, who became the first sitting U.S. President to call on Mr. Graham at home when he stopped by for coffee while vacationing in nearby Asheville, NC, this past April. Mr. Graham also attended the re-opening of the Billy Graham Library earlier this year, following a three-month renovation to update the exhibits.

"I have been honored by so many visitors, and grateful for the opportunity to pray with them as we discussed what is going on in the world today," Mr. Graham said. "Recently, I have been praying for renewal in the Church in America and international revival. This includes specific prayers for the Third Lausanne Congress on Global Evangelization held down in Cape Town, South Africa, last month. We first began holding these global leadership gatherings in 1961, and I believe they are so important as we work together with our Christian brothers and sisters around the world in spreading the good news of the Gospel message.

"While I don't know what the future holds for me, I still look for ways to serve the Lord," Mr. Graham continued. "Most of all, I look forward to serving Him in Heaven one day, alongside my dear wife Ruth, who I miss more every year."
Special Needs Training

Currently, in the United States , people with disabilities are virtually invisible in the interfaith community, even though people with disabilities constitute statistically 15% - 20% of our U.S. population. Families with children with special needs are especially hard hit in finding places to worship that offer acceptance and empathy for their situation. In our communities, 2 in 5 families have a child with a disability or special medical need. Divorce rate in marriages with a disabled child exceeds 4 out 5 marriages.

The P.U.R.E. Ministry Project is a nationwide effort to assist Christians in including, ministering to, and caring for disabled people and their families within the framework of their local church. A training seminar in P.U.R.E. respite outreach will be offered starting at 9AM Saturday, September 24, 2010 at Heritage Christian Church at 2130 Redwine Road in Fayetteville.

Andy Andrews is an internationally known speaker and novelist whose works have sold millions of copies worldwide. He is author of The Traveler’s Gift, The Noticer, Return to Sawyerton Springs, The Butterfly Effect and The Heart Mender and many other creative works. His newest book is The Boy Who Changed the World, a children's book that teaches that everything you do matters.

Andy lived a relatively normal life until the age of nineteen, when both his parents died—and he found himself literally homeless, sleeping under a pier or in someone's garage. Then he asked the question that would ultimately affect millions of people. "Is life just a lottery ticket, or are there choices one can make to direct his future?"

Andy has spoken at the request of four different U.S. Presidents and works with people from all walks of life, including the military. He lives in Alabama, with his wife, Polly, and their two sons.
WHO IS ANDY ANDREWS?

Andy Andrews, hailed by a New York Times writer as someone who has quietly become "one of the most influential people in America,” is a best-selling novelist and in-demand corporate speaker for the world’s largest organizations. The Traveler’s Gift, a featured book selection of ABC’s Good Morning America, has been translated into nearly twenty languages and was on the New York Times bestseller list for seventeen weeks. His latest book, The Noticer was also on the NY Times bestsellers list.

Andy has spoken at the request of four different United States presidents and toured military bases around the world, being called upon by the Department of Defense to speak to the troops. He is one of the most popular and in demand speakers in corporate America. Arguably, there is no single person on the planet better at weaving subtle yet life-changing lessons into riveting tales of adventure and intrigue—both on paper and on stage.
He lives in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Polly, and their two sons.
Feed Your Faith’s LOVE WORTH FIGHTING FOR tour featuring Kirk Cameron and Warren Barfield LIVE will be in Marietta, Georgia on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Roswell Street Baptist Church.

The LOVE WORTH FIGHTING FOR tour features actor, writer and evangelist Kirk Cameron and singer/songwriter Warren Barfield (“Love Is Not A Fight” from the FIREPROOF movie starring Kirk Cameron). The event has two sessions – an afternoon matinee session from 1 - 4:30 p.m. and an evening session beginning at 7 - 10:30 p.m.

In 2009, this event was attended by nearly 9,000 people in Knoxville, Tenn. and tickets sold out almost six months early. Don’t wait if you wish to participate in this amazing, life-changing conference.
The LOVE WORTH FIGHTING FOR conference is all about relationships, and it applies to teenagers, single adults, newly married couples and longtime spouses. The conference also focuses on the all-important relationship each of us has with God.

Cameron starred in the runaway hit movie FIREPROOF last year. Following the success of his 1980s hit television show, Growing Pains, Kirk Cameron married actress Chelsea Noble and started a family. Today the father of six is an outspoken believer and has starred in the Left Behind movies, written books, and continues to work in television. His next movie, “Monumental: In Search of America’s National Treasure,” is currently in production.

North Carolina-born singer/songwriter Warren Barfield is on a mission to make the truly important things important again in his life. Things like faith, love, marriage, children, truth, and with his songs, he challenges us all to do the same. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live." Warren has found those things in his faith, his wife, and his belief in love. "These are the things I would die for; things I will wake up every morning and spend my day fighting for," Barfield said.

For the past four years, Feed Your Faith has sponsored the best and brightest Christian speakers, authors and performing artists to “feed” the faithful while raising tens of thousands of dollars to feed those who are in need.

A few years ago, Mike Williams – a Blount County resident with a heart for people who are struggling – started Feed Your Faith. The Feed Your Faith concept was simple; bring in Christian speakers, authors, singers and music groups to help Christians grow in their faith and, at the same time, raise money for those who are less fortunate. Unlike some nonprofit and charity groups, Feed Your Faith has virtually no overhead expenses – so once the cost of bringing the event to town is covered, proceeds go directly to local charities.

To date, Feed Your Faith has worked with nationally known writers and music groups including Lee Strobel (former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and author of The Case for Christ), author Mark Middleberg, DecembeRadio, Decyfer Down and Sanctus Real (Dove Award winning Christian Rock and Alternative band), needtobreath and Sarah Reeves.

In September, 1984 the school began with three teachers and four classes with a total of 43 three- and four-year-old children. Over the years the program steadily increased in size and scope. In 2003-04 a Kindergarten program was added with 15 children, giving the school a total of 10 classes and 130 students. The PTCUMC Preschool first became recognized as a Program of Excellence by the United Methodist Preschool Association of the North Georgia Conference in 1996. The PTCUMC Preschool has maintained the same high quality of programming in the years that followed, achieving recertification in 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2008.

On Tuesday, March 16 the community is invited to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Festivities will begin with a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 PM in the PTCUMC multipurpose room. Class photos from all 25 years will be shown during the dinner and current students will sing. From 6:30 – 7:30 PM the school will hold an open house in the classrooms on the first floor. Dinner is $5 per person, $3 for children under 12, with a $20 maximum per family. Shroud Encounter is a highly acclaimed multi-media presentation and is sponsored by the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club.

Shroud Encounter is a production of Shroud of Turin Education Project, Inc. and will be presented by Russ Breault, president and founder. The presentation is a fast moving, big-screen experience covering all aspects of Shroud research. The Rotary event will be 30-minute abbreviated version.

Russ Breault is an international lecturer and researcher who has been featured in seven national documentaries and has presented at numerous colleges and universities including Duke, West Point, and Auburn. See www.ShroudEncounter.com for more info.
The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery. The 14-foot long linen cloth that has been in Turin, Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5'10" bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible. Millions of people over the centuries have believed it be the actual burial shroud of Jesus. The historical trail tracks back through Italy, France, Asia Minor (Turkey) and may have originated in the Middle East according to botanical evidence.

A team of 24 scientists in 1981 concluded it was not the work of an artist. They found no visible trace of paint, pigment, dye or other artistic substances on the cloth. Other discoveries have defied explanation such as why the image shows up as a positive image in a photographic negative. The image also contains 3-D or distance information indicating the cloth must have wrapped a human form at the time the image was created. The blood is AB positive with human DNA. Skeptics have mounted numerous attempts to show how a medieval artist could have produced the image but all have been inadequate to fully explain how the mysterious image was formed. The image is so superficial it only penetrates the top micro-fibers to the depth of a single bacterium. In addition, there is no image under the blood meaning that the blood was on the cloth before the image. No attempt at replicating the image has resolved these two key attributes. If the cloth indeed wrapped a corpse, there are no stains of decomposition.

The Shroud was largely dismissed in 1988 when three carbon dating labs indicated a medieval origin. However chemical research published in a peer reviewed scientific journal in 2005 shows that the single sample cut from the outside corner edge was not part of the original Shroud material. In violation of the sampling protocol, only one sample was used for dating and was cut from the most handled area of the cloth, an area that should have been avoided. The sample appears to have been part of a section that was frayed and repaired sometime during the Middle Ages. Based on this new evidence, many scientists now believe the carbon dating result is inconclusive and should no longer be considered valid.

Adding strength to the Shroud’s authenticity, scientists from Hebrew University confirmed the presence of pollen from plants that grow only in Israel. The mystery continues. National Geographic called it "One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times."

Shroud Encounter will cover all aspects of the history, science, art and theories of how the image may have been formed.
---
Community News You Can Use
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
Twitter: @gafrontpage
www.ReadMyLipstickNetwork.com
Twitter: @readmylipstick
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
www.Hummingbird-Hollow.com
Twitter: @hhpotterystudio
---
