However, they were busily engaged in building their communities and economic future. Education was not neflected. Children attended field schools inside local church buildings. While young ladies were sent to female academies, the boys attended agricultural academies, medical colleges and studied law. A popular vocation was to study law under a the supervision of a local judge or lawyer. In Georgia, the Georgia State University (later called the University of Georgia) was the State school. The records reflect students in attendance from the early 1800s, coming from all over the State. Before this institution was available, students went out of State. After much controversy about providing a college education for females published in the Macon Telegraph, the first female college in Georgia was opened in Macon. It was called Wesleyan Female College. The year was 1836. The college quickly filled, with students arriving from all over Georgia, but mostly the central portion. The old records of this venable institution did not survive, however, the class of 1850 was listed on the Bibb County Census. Such is the case for most schools. Search the census (1850 to current date) to find the names of students. As it turns out, i began the massive undertaking of reading old newspapers, trying to locate the graduation class of my second great-grandmother, one of the first classes, according to family tradition. I had always been told that three generations of grandmothers had studied music at Wesleyan. I was interested in discovering their accomplishments. On and on it went, until I had searched to 1925. I never found the records or notices, however, the project is not lost. Anyone can benefit by going to the website GA Greduates In the meanwhile, no matter what State is involved, the research process is the same. Search newspapers and census records. This is possible by searching old newspapers. Graduations, commencements and announcements were published during the latter part of May, all of June and part of July. This knowledge will help narrow down the tedious research through lengthy, rambling newspapers. Don't forget the society column as this is where group events and individual student photographs are featured. Good news for Georgia. The old newspapers have been researched throughout the State from 1818 to ca 1925 and are posted on GA Graduates The site is absolutely free and you may add your graduation photos and information to the Wiki If you add your graduation photo to the wiki, someday a relative will come along and discover it and be thrilled. Just think, google a name, and find a photograph!

I found my mother's school graduation classes from 1917 to 1923! But the creme de' la creme was finding my great aunt's graduation photo in 1900. The picture of her as a young, unmarried girl was compared to an older version; also the age fit the scenario, as she would have been 15 years old in 1879. Such discoveries helps to add flavor to the family history.
http://www.gagraduates.com

1905 Andrews College Graduates

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In 1824, Archibald Holland owned all of downtown Atlanta. He drew 202-1/2 acres in the land lottery. Imagine that! His home was located on Capitol Avenue where his first son was born. His struggles were like so many persons who took up the challenge to build a life in America and opened the door to the prosperity of future generations. Sure, the dirt road has been paved over and State buildings occupy the landscape, but the fact remains that my ancestor helped to build a community out of the wilderness. Just like your ancestors fought to uphold freedom, religious tolerance and the Constitution of the United States of America. They gave their sons to the Revolutionary War to fight against an oppressive tax by the British and obtained freedom. Again, they rallied during the War of 1812. Likewise, their sons fought in the War Between the States which was started against the North because of oppressive taxes and tariffs to Southern planters and ended in freeing slaves. Lest we forget World War I and II? Now, our boys fight a vicious terrorist regime whose motto is to "kill the infidel".

Since the election of Obama, our country has been under assault from within. Our representatives are not truthful or honest. For those of you on medicare insurance, your premium will soon be tripled to $283.00 per month. Not a decrease, as promised, but more and more and more. Today, our Congress and Senate "mandates" and "dictates". They operate behind closed doors and pass laws which pad their own pockets. They are in the process of passing an array of taxes on everything that we do. Unfortunately, the government has access to all of our personal information, from 1099s, W-2, 401K's, bank accounts, everything that we do. In the past, this was okay because we had reasonable representation. But today, we have a bunch of dishonorable and dishonest rats in Washington who pass laws behind closed doors. And so on and so on.

I hope that everyone will remember how hard our ancestors fought for our freedom and attend the Annual Tax Day Revolt rally in your own city. And please, remember the mid-term elections. What we do today will determine what happens to our children tomorrow.
http://www.gagraduates.com

Rare Books for Sale

We have a selection of rare genealogy and historical books for sale, first-come, first serve.
Georgia's school children usually attended the nearest academy, which was not always located in the county where they resided. Daughters were in their teens went sent to further their education and usually graduated at the age of fifteen years. Sons also attended the academies before being sent to colleges or universities. Frequently, they went out-of-state. I discovered where one of my ancestors resided, John Collins of Cobb County, Revolutionary War Soldier, by finding his great-granddaughter, Ida Collins, in an old school photograph published in the Atlanta Constitution in 1900. Now that I knew she was from Acworth, I went there and poking around the cemeteries discovered where John Collins was buried. The census records and county records had failed to unravel family members. That one picture pulled it all together for me. Georgia Pioneers has a database of School Graduates (grammar, high school, college, academies, universities) dating from 1840s to 1900. Many individual and class photographs were included, plus whatever was published in the newspapers about the graduation. If you have not seen it, click on "School Graduates" in the Library.
http://www.gagraduates.com

Index to 1908 GA School Graduates

Index to Student Names in Georgia Schools During 1908

In 1906 there was a hurricane in the Bahamas which wiped out the entire population of a small island. Japan and China were vying for influence and supremacy. Beijing was suspicious of Tokyo's hunger for global expansion and America was on the brink of war. As American politicians veered towards socialism, articles appeared explaining the evils of socialism. Although national and european news dominated front pages, there was also plenty of social news from small towns. What did they say? "Mrs. Smith visited friends in Atlanta this week." Also popular were one-liners, such as special events,
marriage notices, and deaths. A variety of information was scattered throughout, from political news to school graduations, ballgames, crop reports, new buildings, plats of land and estate for sale, legal news including the supreme court and want ads. You have to read it from cover to cover to realize all of the news in play. Year after year grammar schools, high schools, academies, institutes, colleges and universities published names of graduates, those who won medals and special awards, who played in concerts and what instrument, and class photos, even individual student photos. About this time, Georgia Technological Institute in Atlanta formed its baseball team, which is famously known as the Yellow Jackets. Small Georgia towns also had their teams, like Lithonia, Gordon and Mercer. Female colleges were filled with students coming as far away as North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama to attend. Yes, Georgia was educating its daughters! They usually graduated from institutions like Lucy Cobb Institute and Wesleyan Female College at fifteen or sixteen years of age, with sons going on to Georgia Tech, Mercer, University of Georgia and North Georgia Agricultural College. Upon examining census records, one is inclined to observe the box "unable to read or write", however, most children were being educated. In those days, a full high school or college education was not a requirement for finding work. In fact, the work force preferred experience. How things have changed! Also, as some families resided near county lines, they were occasionally missed by census-takers. This is why we search the records in the adjoining counties. The parent county may have been sub-divided several times. This is why it is important to discover the parent county and pay attention to the date of formation. I have ancestors from the Atlanta area and thus search Henry, Rockdale, DeKalb, Fulton, Newton and Cobb Counties. One ancestor drew in the 1821 land lottery, a resident of Greene County at the date of drawing(but resided in Clarke County several years later). The land which he drew was listed in Henry County in the 14th district. Upon checking the land district map at the Georgia State Archives, it was discovered that this land actually fell into old downtown Atlanta. Yes! All of present-day Underground Atlanta. Thus, in 1821, Atlanta was in Henry County, and later became DeKalb County, and finally Fulton County. Such tiny details are revealing !
Georgia had a surprising number of educational schools, both private and public, such as academies, agricultural colleges, institutes, grammar schools, high schools, universities. Females attended local academies until about age fifteen, while males furthered their education in colleges and universities. Sources include Georgia newspaper articles which published a variety of information on graduates such as class photos and names, awards and special activities. Some of the earliest articles published photos of grammar school children! The original articles are included in pdf format. Other information was gleaned from a variety of sources.
