Payton Gardner is an Assistant Professor of Geosciences, Faculty Director of the Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory and Faculty Affiliate of the UM BRIDGES program.  Dr. Gardner’s research focuses on groundwater and its role in geologic, hydrologic and energy systems.  Dr. Gardner’s research has focused on using isotopic methods to understand deep, old groundwater systems and their interactions with the shallow hydrologic system.  He recent research at the Food-Energy-Water nexus has focused on in investigating nuclear repository design, and predicting radionuclide transport and biological exposure for the assessment of repository systems for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

Abstract:

The 2011 Tohoku, Japan earthquake (Mw9.0) produced huge slip (30 to 50 meters) on the shallow portion of the fault close to the toe of the megathrust. The large displacement on this portion of the subduction zone was unexpected by seismologists and caused the devastating tsunami that took over 23,000 lives and inflicted massive damage along the northeast coast of Honshu. The JFAST project endeavored to understand the physical mechanisms of largeslip during earthquakes. By drilling into the fault just over a year after the earthquake, we learned that this fault was unusually weak. Even though the fault slipped about 50 m at this spot, temperature measurements indicate that it dissipated little energy. The data show that faults may be very weak when they slip in earthquakes. Faults may have a few strong spots govern the energy available for earthquakes while most of the fault poses little resistance to motion.

Emily Brodsky is an earthquake physicist who experienced the power of ocean drilling for the first time at the JFAST expedition (IODP Exp. 343) that drilled into the fault that generated the M9.0 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

]]> Geosciences Commencement – 2017 http://www.spatial.umt.edu/blog/2017/05/09/geosciences-commencement-2017/ Tue, 09 May 2017 16:18:39 +0000 http://www.spatial.umt.edu/blog/?p=702 The 2017 UM Commencement Ceremony will be held in Washington-Grizzly Stadium at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13.  The Geosciences Departmental ceremony will begin at 12:00 p.m. (NOT 2:00 P.M.) and will be held outdoors on the south east side of the Clapp Building.  The graduation picnic will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the same location.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, plates, and utensils will be provided.  Please bring a hot dish, salad, or dessert to share.

GRADUATING STUDENTS:

Please let Loreene Skeel (loreene.skeel@umontana.edu) know as soon as possible if you will be participating in the departmental ceremony which will be held at NOON.  Cap and gown are optional for our ceremony.  You may participate in commencement if you graduated summer or fall 2016 or if you will be graduating spring 2017 or summer 2017.  All participating graduates should complete the attached questionnaire and return it to me by May 5.
