Opinging the week we've got...

TRON
A virtual-world worker looks to take down the Master Control Program. I think I just might actually pay the extra cash to watch this one in 3D.

How Do You Know
Feeling a bit past her prime at 27, former athlete Lisa Jorgenson finds herself in the middle of a love triangle, as a corporate guy in crisis competes with Lisa's current, baseball-playing beau. The only appealing thing about this movie is that Reese looks the best she ever has, plus it's got Mike from Friends

Yogi Bear
A documentary filmmaker travels to Jellystone Park to shoot a project and soon crosses paths with Yogi Bear, his sidekick Boo-Boo, and Ranger Smith. I still don't really know why this movie was made.

I don't even think I have to mention that, of course, I'm checking out Tron first thing this weekend, but because Fighter didn't open at my local theater last week, I'll no doubt check that one out too.

The Rock'em Sock'em Robots Movie

By Guest Blogger Christian Salinas
If we didn't have enough proof already, the new trailer for the upcoming movie Real Steel, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Hollywood has officially run out of ideas.

The film's plot description won't admit it, but how can this be anything else other than a movie based on the classic children's toy "Rock'em Sock'em Robots".

That said, I have to admit, it actually looks like an okay movie, I'm just wondering now what other toy/board games can be adapted onto the big-screen. Could 2012 be the year of the Hungry Hungry Hippos movie?

Check out the trailer and judge for yourself, but I doubt you'll disagree with me.

Why I Still Like Mel Gibson

By Guest Blogger Christian Salinas
Okay, So it's pretty obvious by now, Mel Gibson is not a good guy, or at least, he's not as charming, and lovable as the characters he's played in most of his movies, but you have to admit... the guy is pretty talented.

I'm sure by now we've all heard the tapes of him blowing-up on his girlfriend, but I find it very hard to hold that against him. We've all had our share of embarrassing moments, and we all have character flaws, the only difference is ours aren't posted on youtube and viewed by millions of people (or at least not yet anyway). I personally would hate it if everyone only focused on my defects and overlooked the good.

The first Mel Gibson movie I remember seeing was the first Lethal Weapon, and I remember liking it. I also liked Forever Young, Braveheart, Signs, just to mention a few. I also liked a some of the five movies he's directed so far. Arguably, they may not have been masterpieces, but they were solidly made films.

Frankly, I know I'll never meet Mel in person, and we'll certainly never be friends, but some of the characters he's played will live on in my mind as great people. I choose to focus on that, and I hope he is able to introduce us to some even greater people/characters in the future.

Mel Gibson's new weird movie "The Beaver"

Why Zack Snyder is Perfect for Superman

By Guest Blogger: Christian Salinas
It's been announced that Zack Snyder will direct the next Superman movie, and I couldn't be happier.

It had been reported for a while now that Snyder would direct Superman with Christopher Nolan as a contributing producer. However, it was recently announced that Snyder is now 100% in charge of the film since Nolan will be too busy working on the next Batman.

In my opinion, Snyder has definitely proven himself worthy of taking-on the next Superman film all by himself. It's clear from his work on 300, The Watchmen, and most recently Legend of The Guardians that this guy knows exactly how to present a story in the appropriate visual style.

Since comics are a very visual medium, style and design are key elements. However, just as important to a successful comic-book film adaption is the connection between the audience and the main characters of the film. It can be argued that King Leonidas and Rorschach were great charters, but most can agree they were very interesting, and even emotionally engaging.

I love that comic book characters are finally being taken seriously by Hollywood, and that serious consideration is given to who will be in charge of their big-screen adaptations. For an industry that, understandably, makes decisions based on financial factors, I take it as a sign of a "creative maturity" that Warner Bros. chose a director that has made some pretty awesome movies yet hasn't made a whole lot of money at the Box-Office.
I don't even have to read the plot for these because its just so obvious that they are about. I will say this about one of this week's movies. The trailer for Burlesque was one of the dumbest I've seen in a very long time. It made the movie seem so stupid that I don't just NOT want to see it, It made me actually pissed-off the movie was made in the first place.

Unstoppable
Is about an unmanned, half-mile-long freight train carrying some pretty bad stuff that no one has control of and is headed straight into a big city, where it could kill everyone. It's funny, even though this movie is based on true events, the plot for it still sounds pretty cheesy. I keep hearing Homer Simpson in my head referring to this movie as "The Train That Couldn't Slow Down".

Morning Glory
Is about a hotshot television producer who is trying to save his struggling morning television show. Other than that, I know very little about this movie, except that it stars Rachel McAdams; she's always fun to look at.

Skyline
It's an alien invasion movie.
These are all pretty much the same, yet I still enjoy most of them. They rarely have a believable plot (with a few exceptions, of course) but they always have cool special effects, and cool creatures, which ultimately is all we expect these days from sci-fi action films. I don't think this film will fail to deliver.
Due Date
Is about a father-to-be, and an aspiring actor taking a road trip in order to make it to the child's birth on time. This movie looks funny from the trailers, and I guess that is probably the reason I won't go see it this weekend because it's been my experience that they usually always put the fumiest parts of comedies into their trailers that there really is no reason to watch the movie... you've already seen the best parts.

For Colored Girls
Is about four women dealing with different issues that impact women in general and women of color in particular. I'm sure this will be a good movie that deals with important issues, but I'm not black and I'm not a woman, this movie was very obviously not made for me so there's no point in me watching it.

Megamind
Family movies have all been pretty great this year, and I don't see why this one will be any exception. It's got a pretty appealing all-star cast and Computer Animated movies always have some pretty cool 3D effects.

I think I saw the first... Saw, but I can't even remember if I saw the following six or whatever the count is now, I haven't really been keeping up with it. That's not to say they're bad movies, I'm just not that into them, seems like they're pretty gruesome, but not very scary. However, this one is going to be in 3D so I guess that's a big deal.

Regardless of whether it's good or bad, it'll be a horror movie opening Halloween weekend so it's definitely the right film at the right time.

This should be a great movie because everyone knows the best movies ever made were shot using security cameras with no script.

Hereafter
This one I am actually looking forward to seeing. The last few Clint Eastwood films I saw were absolutely amazing, and I've always been drawn to movies that try to answer big, and meaningful questions. What could be more meaningful than trying to answer the one question no one has a simple answer to; What happens to us when we die?

The Company Men
This story centers on a year in the life of three men trying to survive a round of corporate downsizing at a major company, and how that affects them, their families, and their communities. I don't really know if I have to see this movie, I feel like I'm already living it. (in a way)

Movie Times for the Weekend of Oct 22, 2010 (Rio Grande City)

DEVIL (80min) PG13
| 5:05p | 9:55p

EASY A (92min) PG13
| 12:55p | 7:10p

JACKASS IN 3-D(94min) R -- Digital
| 12:10p | 2:50p | 5:15p | 7:30p | 10:10p

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS OWLS GAHOOLE IN 3-D (100min) PG
| 12:00p | 2:25p | 4:40p | 6:55p | 9:30p

LET ME IN (115min) R
| 4:15p | 9:45p

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT (115min) PG13
| 1:00p | 4:05p | 7:20p | 10:05p

MY SOUL TO TAKE IN 3-D (107min) R
| 12:40p | 3:00p | 5:20p | 7:40p | 10:15p

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 (86min) R
| 12:25p | 2:35p | 4:45p | 7:25p | 9:35p

RED (111min) PG13
| 12:05p | 2:40p | 5:10p | 7:35p | 10:00p

SECRETARIAT (123min) PG
| 12:30p | 4:00p | 7:00p | 9:50p

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (120min) PG13
| 12:35p | 4:10p | 7:05p | 9:40p

YOU AGAIN (105min) PG
| 12:20p | 2:45p | 7:15p

This Weekend's Local Show-Times (RGC)

Oct. 15, 2010 - Sorry I'm late with this, this week. This is a pretty sad premise for a movie, but the trailers sells this as a feel-good family movie. It's one of two family movies opening this week... (I'll continue my thought at the end of this post)

My Soul to Take is about a serial killer who returns to his hometown to stalk seven children who share the same birthday as the date he was allegedly put to rest. The trailer makes a big deal about how this movie is directed by Master of Horror Wes Craven, but the nothing in the trailers leads me to believe there's anything different in this movie that we haven't seen in every Horror made in the last decade. Even so, I choose not to under estimate good ol' Wes.

Secretariat is the life story of Penny Chenery, who was the owner of a famous racehorse named Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown in 1973. (to continue my thought) Out of the two family movies opening this week, even though I have no doubt Secretariat will be a "higher quality" movie, I just don't see kids going crazy over it. Kids, I believe, are the target audience when a movie is considered a family film, but I have a hard time figuring out just what audience this movie was made for. So I really do see Life as we know it, being the safer bet this weekend in spite of it's arguably depressing premise.

This Weekend's Local Show-Times (RGC)

Editor's Note: it could just be that I have a crappy smart phone, but it seems like our local theater's website is almost impossible to read on mobile devices. Since I've put a lot of effort into making this blog as "mobile-friendly" as possible, I have decided to post local Show-times for the coming weekend, hopefully every week on this site. I know I'm going to use this to view local show times on-the-go, and I hope this is useful to you as well.

Case 39 is about a woman who is nice enough to take in a child from a broken home into her life only to discover that she's wanted by demons or something. Not sure what the over all plot is, but I'm sure it'll involve disturbing images, and needless deaths. Sounds like a great family movie.

Let Me In, seems similar to Case 39, only in this one the kid is a demon, or vampire something. I think we've seen both these types of films made many times already, but this one might be a bit of a stand out since it's star, (Chloe Moretz, Hit Girl in Kick-Ass) has given at least one amazing performance in her short career so far.

The Social Network is, I think, the one we've all been waiting for since it's about the founding of the one thing, nice-girls, nerds, hipsters, and perverts have in common; FaceBook. Not only that but it's directed by David Fincher who has directed several amazing features such as Fight Club, and Seven.

Legend of the Guardians, is about a couple of owls on a quest to find a special tree where the Guardians are said to live. This film is, of course, a kids movie and the trailers feature some of the most beautiful computer animation I have ever seen. I have absolutely no doubt this will be a well made, moral heavy and entertaining movie, but for some reason I just don't really feel like spending a movie ticket on it, I'd much ratther just wait for the eventual DVD release. Maybe this is just a generational thing. I grew up on "Dr. Seuss", and just don't find a story of Hero-Owls all that appealing.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Needless to say, this is a sequel to the original Wall Street of the 80's. I am looking forward to this movie, it's absolutely the perfect time for it. With the real Wall Street always on the news these days, it would be refreshing to see fictional/reality-based behind the scenes look at just what's going on, through the eyes of an almost legendary 80's fictional character. Where did the get "Money Never Sleeps" sounds like a 90's hip-hop track, featuring P' Diddy, of Puffy, or whatever he was going by back then.

Opening This Week - Sept. 17, 2010

There will definitely be something for everyone this weekend at you local theater. Opening this week we've got an weird animated family movie "Alpha and Omega", a teen comedy "Easy A", a serious adult drama "The Town", and something for everyone in between "Devil".

Alpha and Omega, is an animated family movie with a somewhat disturbing plot about one female wolf, and one male wolf who are dropped in a certain area to reproduce, implying that the story will eventually involve (or imply) animals mating.

Easy A, is a loose modern retelling of classic literature's "The Scarlet Letter". In the film the main character lies about her promiscuity and is branded a "Harlot".

The Town, is one that I'm actually really looking forward to, It's a pretty basic bank-hist type movie with a promised twist, but I'm expecting the plot to take a back seat to what are sure to be some pretty great performances from some proven talented actors.

Devil, not much is said about the plot to this movie, implying some crazy twist ending, but from what I can tell from the trailer is that it's a movie about people that are trapped in an elevator with some kind of evil supernatural creature... or are they?

Opening This Week - Sept. 10, 2010

Not much to choose from this week with only one movie opening nation wide: Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

I think this is the fourth of the Resident Evil movies, and I'm sure it's the first one in 3D. They've all been okay films. Okay in the sense that they deliver what they promise, a beautiful girl with big guns killing zombies. I don't remember the plot to any of these films, and ultimately I don't think they really matter much as long as there's always something being shot at. I guess things should be just a little better this time in that everything that gets shot at will be in in-your-face 3D.

Opening This Week - Sept. 3 , 2010

Hello Everyone! Back From my vacation, ready to for this week's exciting new releases. Opening this week we've got; Going the Distance, The American, and Machete.

I still think there's something a little funny about a movie called The American, is opening opposite a movie featuring a Mexican Hero... hm.

Going the Distance: is a romantic comedy about a couple trying to survive a long distance relationship. I'll admit, I've seen some pretty entertaining performance from both Drew Barrymore, and the "Mac" guy. This one might not be such a bad date movie after all.

The American; the plot summary for this one is a little confusing, but I think it's supposed to be about an American assassin, or arms maker who ends up in a lot of trouble somewhere overseas. I'm not sure, but the trailer for this one make George Clooney look like an action hero again. It's been a while.

Machete: Is all about a Mexican killing white people, (but only the white people that are bad guys of course). It's the latest work from one of my all time favorite, and Texas native, director Robert Rodriguez. I've been waiting for this one for over a year, and I'll no doubt be in line for the midnight release.

Opening This Week - Aug. 20 , 2010

There will definitely be something for everyone to watch this week with four movies opening nation wide. Opening this week we've got, Piranha 3D, Vampires Suck, Nanny McPhee Returns, and Lottery Ticket

Piranha 3D, What is there to say about this movie really? The title is pretty much an actual summary of the movie; It's a 3D movie about Piranhas.

Vampires Suck, marks the return of the Spoof genre. This time the filmmakers set their sites on the, both world famous, and word hated, Vampire romance novels that are the Twilight features. This looks pretty funny actually, but I don't really know if it's something I want to spend a movie ticket on.

Nanny McPhee Returns, just as the title says, this is the return of Nanny McPhee to the big screen. I never saw the first one, and no one I know can seem to remember seeing it either. In my humble opinion, if it's a good family movie you want to see about a nanny teaching kids valuable life lessons, I recommend Netflixing Mary Poppins

Lottery Ticket, is about a young man who wins the lottery but can't cash on the ticket for some reason until the end of a three day weekend, and I guess everyone around him expects to get a cut, or something, I don't really follow. I might be funny, I mean, it stars former kid-rapper who was once called Lil' Bow-Wow.

Opening This Week - Aug. 13 , 2010

Opening this week we've got: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Expendables, and Eat Pray Love.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a movie based on a graphic novel about a kid who, for some reason, has to fight off his new girlfriend's evil ex-boyfriends who have apparently teamed up to form a league of evil ex's. If I were this Scott Pilgrim guy I would seriously want to make sure this girl has taken every STD test available, I mean, man... seven ex-boyfriends.

Eat Pray Love is about a woman who feels the need to travel the world for a year to try to "find herself". We've seen these before except this one might be taken a little more seriously since it stars the, almost legendary, Julia Roberts. I know I won't go see this of my own free will, but I'm sure it'll be a good date movie.

The Expendables, I haven't even looked at the plot description for this movie, and I don't have to, it features pretty much all of my all-time favorite action movie-gods, and I all I want from this movie is to see them do what they do best; kill bad guys, and blow stuff up. The only way this movie could be disappointing is if it actually takes itself too seriously.

The Other Guys, is sold as a movie that's not about the best cops in town, but rather, a movie about the other guys (or cops). I've seen the trailer for this movie several times, and I'll say, it was funny the first time I saw it, but it was just annoying every other time. I'll probably end up watching this movie anyway, but I'll go ahead and use it as one of those movies you use to go out with a group of friends.

Step-Up 3D, what can I say really?, this is a movie for teenagers who like dance movies, so if you fall under this category, you should be in for a good show, this one's in 3D

Opening This Week - July 30, 2010

Movies opening this week, July 30, 2010 are Dinner for Schmucks,

Cats & Dogs 2, and Charlie St. Cloud.
Dinner for Schmucks, is about rich people who host a yearly dinner inviting people who they think are the biggest idiots in the world. The person who brings the biggest idiot to the dinner is the winner of something, I don't really know, it's not made clear in the trailer. This movie seems like it'll have a few good laughs, but it also seems a little mean-spirited.

Cats & Dogs 2, is a squeal to the original Cats & Dogs that came out a few years ago, it's about dogs and cats that are actually super-spies that save the world on a daily basis. This seems a little silly, a lot actually, but this should work well if you want to take your toddler to the movies this weekend, but I think any child older than eight, might think this whole concept, is "kinda dumb".

Charlie St. Cloud, this is a movie about a young man who can see, and talk to his little brother who was killed in an accident. I'm not sure what the over all plot of the story is, but it's being sold as an emotional drama. It stars Zac Efron, who has been working very hard to break away from all the High School Musical movies, and be taken seriously as an actor. I guess we'll see how that works out.

I actually don't think I'll watch any of these movies this weekend. I think I'm one more viewing away from, once, and for all, solving the mystery of Inception.

Opening This Week - July 23, 2010

New in theaters this weekend we've got Salt, and Ramona and Beezus.

Salt; is a movie starring Angelina Jolie, do I really need to say more?... Okay, yes I do. In this movie, she plays some sort of super-spy, who is accused of being a traitor, and from what we can see from the trailer, the whole movie will be about her being chased down by her own "spy agency" be it the CIA or FBI or whatever, I don't think it really matters, it's a movie starring Angelina Jolie!

Ramona and Beezus; to be honest, I hadn't even heard of this movie till just a few hours ago. Apparently it's a movie based on a children's book series about a little girl, and her littler sister, and the crazy adventures they seem to always find themselves in. I'm sure it's going to be a good family movie. It's rated G which is rare even in family movie these days.

As I'm sure I made it clear, I will probably watch Salt this weekend. I'm not really expecting much from it, from the trailers, some of the sequences look a little cheesy, but it's still the summer-movie season, and cheese isn't a bad thing right now, plus (it case I didn't get the point across) It's a movie starring Angelina Jolie!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is about exactly that, the story of how a young man becomes a Sorcerer's Apprentice. This movie is directed by the same guy that directed the National Treasure movies which weren't great, but were entertaining without taking themselves to seriously. That's pretty much what I expect this movie will be like with what, I'm sure, will be some pretty amazing special effects.

Inception, which I'm sure I'll catch the midnight screening for, is a film I have been waiting for, for a while now. It's directed by Christopher Nolan who, in my opinion, is one of the best directors making films today. This is his first film since Batman: The Dark Night. I'm actually not too clear as to what the plot is since I've made an effort to avoid any spoilers, but I have no reason to believe this movie will disappoint in any way.
