In this episode, Nik and I discuss Gran Turismo 5, Wikileaks and Facebook far more than we intended. Then we delve into Murphy’s Law of PC building as we talk about Nik’s recent experiencing putting his system together from parts he bought at German Wal-Mart.

Notes:
Nik likes to be babied, not nurtured.
Keith actually has a love-hate relationship with Gran Turismo 5.
Nik might have fallen asleep while Keith was talking about GT5.
Here is a simplistic video comparison between the GT5 and FM3 AI’s.
Some have said that the AI improves at the higher racing levels.
GT5 was announced at E3 in 2005, but was NOT to be included as a PS3 launch title.
Keith obviously forgets that Germanglish is NOT a video game podcast.
Nik has not yet named his new PC. (sad face)
Unnamed computers have been known to kill people in their sleep.
Windows 7 performance scores are not a very accurate way to benchmark your system.
460 Euros is equal to about $608.58.
WikiLeaks has more than 250,000 leaked diplomatic cables, but only around 300 have been published.
Though Keith and Nik somewhat overstated it, journalism is nearly dead.
WikiLeaks released the diplomatic cables to El País, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, and The New York Times.
The Stasi was the Ministry for State Security (Staatssicherheit) of East Germany and was regarded as extremely repressive due to the way it encouraged friends, relatives, and neighbors to spy on each other. This led to a high level of paranoia among East Germans.
Keith “secretly” hates Facebook.
Nik hates Facebook, but does not keep it a secret.
Facebook is The Borg.
Keith is very proud of Nik building his computer.
Computer building is a sweaty job!
Nik has fat fingers like all Germans.
Nik will regret not utilizing good cable management techniques if he ever has to replace something on the motherboard.
Keith said “KDE 64 bit installation CD,” but meant “Kubuntu 64 bit installation CD.”
Nik hates the idea of being able to choose between operating systems, because it might take 2 seconds longer to boot.
Nik said “HowTo.com,” but probably meant “EHow.com.”
Keith was joking when he said he sucks.
Keith’s watch alarm went off at exactly 29:30 EST, ruining the recording of a perfectly mediocre podcast.
Always use spacers between your motherboard and case….always!
Nik thinks that calling fasteners either “male” or “female” is sexist.
Nik was correct about being in the 21st Century. We should be.
The two types of video card jumpering Keith referred to are SLI (NVIDIA) and CrossFire (ATI).
Nik named his guitar “Cilla.”
One of Keith’s computers is named “Lucifer” and means “light-bearer.”
Nik DID say “uh oh.”
Nik HATES his media recommendation.
Nik cries easily.
Keith hypocritically gives bad publicity to Facebook even though Facebook sucks.

Media Recommendations:
Keith: Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster by Nine Inch Nails
Nik: No Love by Filter

Intro/Outro music: “Shostakovich” (by Mucca Pazza)

**Always listen to the very end for the quote of the podcast.

If time and the internet gods permit, Nik and I will be recording Episode 5 of Germanglish Podcast this weekend. We were both very busy last weekend; Nik with his crowded social schedule, and me with my video game playing and TV watching. The extra hour gained from the end of Daylight Saving Time will be well-spent recording.

Possible topics for Episode 5 might include: our favorite Thanksgiving turkey recipes, festively creative uses for pine cones, and discussion of a direct correlation between the length of a squirrel’s tail and the number of nuts it will consume over the winter. (actual podcast topics may vary)

Nik and I have talked about the quality of Episode 4. We agree that it was not our best effort. There was no clear intro, the pace of our discussion was a bit slow, we sounded rusty and unprepared, and the episode ran long by about 30 minutes. These are just a few of the things we will try to improve upon in Episode 5. As for our frequent pursuit of tangents like a crow who sees something shiny, it will probably not decrease as neither Nik nor myself can keep our train of thought on the tracks.

Final thought (not my ultimate final thought. I’m not dying or anything…): In Episode 5, we will do a standard podcast introduction, not for you, but for us. Since the last episode, Nik and I have barely spoken to each other. I don’t even remember what his IM typing interval looks like any more. So we’ll take a few minutes to catch up and shoot die Scheiße before plowing blindly forward into topics.

Thanks for putting up with our nonsense.

At long last, Nik and I have spawned another episode of Germanglish Podcast. In this-laid back, relaxed, freestyle mutation, we discuss the awesomeness of Google’s self-driving cars after Nik fails to make it through the Deus Ex tutorial mission.

We began this recording without an introduction, and it’s very slow going to start, but it’s all down hill from there. If I get some time later today, I’ll post more detailed notes of this episode as I usually do. Until then…enjoy, or I’m sorry (as your level of appreciation or disgust requires).

One thing I would like to point out is that Nik and I used the words “gay,” ”poof,” “whore,” and the intro/outro is a song called “Faggot,” but I assure you that we are both 100% against homophobic prejudice and hate. We use these terms purely for humor and not to offend. If anyone was offended by our use of any words in this episode, too bad. You really need to get some thicker skin and not take everything so seriously.

Things we learned in this episode:

We should start each episode with an introduction.
Stirring coffee makes a lot of noise.
Nik is a sad snowflake.
I have given up on internet privacy.
Nik learned what a “poof” is a homosexual.
I learned that a “poof” is a German whorehouse.
Nik thinks all handicapped people have stumps.
Nik learned that I am a Google whore with a very bad singing voice.
I learned that Nik is a Google whore who hates the I’m Feeling Lucky button.
I learned Nik thinks Justin Bieber is a pop whore.
Nik learned that the T-bagger party will elect the next president.
Nik taught me what fiber optics is all about.
Nik learned that fiber optic cables transfer data via light.
I learned that I am like Madonna.
I learned that Nik has an affinity for pumpkins.
I learned that Nik wants the Knight Rider (KIT) voice in his Google Car.
Nik learned that it’s better to install the game to the Xbox 360 for load times.
I learned that Nik hates deer.
I learned to turn off my IM clients before recording the podcast.
Nik learned that pidgins say coo coo.
Nik learned that Apple trademarked “There’s an app for that.”
Nik re-learned that Google makes the Android operating system.
I learned about a game called “Doodle Jump.”
I learned that Nik was podcasting from his bed.
I learned that Nik hates Nintendo.

CORRECTIONS:
I said that the American economy took 12 years to sink into recession. Actually, the American recession began around December 0f ’07. What I meant was that the weak economy was caused by the incompetent GW Bush administration.
Madonna is not twice as old as me.
Consumering is not really a word. I made it up.
I said “handheld camera,” but meant point and shoot camera or DSLR.
Mushrooms found in the forest MIGHT not be safe to eat.
I said none of our listeners would get the Joseph Smith reference, but one did!
This not really season 4, episode 1 of Germanglish Podcast.

In the spirit of further polluting the internet with moderately foul language and juvenile humor, Nik and I have decided to bring back the Germanglish Podcast. If we were to never podcast again after only three episodes, we would regret that decision every day for the rest of this week. So we are not done. We will be recording Episode 4 this weekend, and should have it cleaned up and released into the wild by Monday.

In case you don’t remember why we had to stop recording…Niklas was Skyping in from Germany on an abacus that was prone to overheating when he moved the beads too quickly. We were afraid of his machine exploding. In Germany, they have very strict laws against fiery PC infernos indoors. Soon, the post-classic, pre-modern German son of mixed heritage and questionable technological morals will be in possession of an actual genuine system capable of running Skype for long periods of time without BSOD-ing its pants. It’s like a dream come true! All of our prayers to Nik to get a job, earn some money, and buy a new PC have come true!
