Fellowship Puts Reporters on Solid Footing as America Ages
The MetLife Foundation Journalists in Aging Fellowship Program (http://www.geron.org/About%20Us/press-room/metlife-foundation-journalists-in-aging-fellows-program) is again welcoming applications from reporters who cover aging issues or who represent ethnic media outlets that serve communities within the U.S. The deadline is July 1.The program, run jointly by The Gerontological Society of America (http://www.geron.org) (GSA) and New America Media (http://www.newamericamedia.org) (NAM), is made possible by a generous grant from the MetLife Foundation (http://www.metlife.com/about/corporate-profile/citizenship/metlife-foundation/index.html). The chosen fellows will participate in GSA’s Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego this November, and then deliver a story from the conference and a major piece or series in the following months. There will be a total of 17 fellows — one more than last year as a...

Hartford Program Issues Geriatric Social Work Awards
The prestigious Hartford Scholars Program (http://www.gswi.org/programs/hfs.html) has granted eight geriatric social work researchers a two-year award that will provide career development, mentorship, and support for projects that will improve healthy outcomes for the country’s aging population. The 2012 scholars are examining such topics as civic engagement, trauma among African American seniors, and the psychosocial impact of female sexual dysfunction. The cohort also includes one scholar supported by the Veterans Health Administration (VA) who will focus on the distress experienced by older cancer patients. The Hartford Scholars Program provides individualized mentorship from top-tier national researchers who offer comprehensive feedback and guidance, and covers travel expenses and registration fees for several gerontology and social work conferences and...

Single Baby Boomers Facing Increased Challenges as They Age
Nick and Bobbi Ercoline (http://www.shcny.com/woodstock-generation-comes-of-age/), the couple depicted on the “Woodstock” soundtrack album cover, have now been happily married for over 40 years. However, a Ercolines as they look today (http://gerontologist.oxfordjournals.org/content/52/2.cover-expansion) — a portrait of successful aging — finds that their unmarried baby boomer counterparts generally fare much poorer in terms of economic, health, and social outcomes. In 2011, the first of the 79 million American baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) reached age 65. Among this population, approximately one in three people are unmarried; the vast majority are either divorced or never-married, while only 10 percent are widowed.Study authors I-Fen Lin, PhD, and Susan L. Brown, PhD — using data from...

Elder Abuse Remains Hidden Problem as Baby Boomers Reach Old Age
Despite the 2010 passage of the Elder Justice Act, policy experts have found that combating widespread abuse of seniors is still not a top priority for care providers and governments alike. As many as one in 10 people age 60 and over are affected by this problem, according to the newest National Academy on an Aging Society (http://www.agingsociety.org), the policy institute of The Gerontological Society of America (http://www.geron.org). U.S. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) and U.S. Representative Peter King (R-NY), who have been heavily involved in legislation to address elder abuse, contributed introductory statements for the issue. Elder abuse encompasses mistreatment, neglect, and exploitation of a physical, psychological, or sexual nature. The...

New GSA Resources Lay Foundation for Relieving Seniors’ Pain
The pain suffered by older adults is the shared focus of the two newest entries in The Gerontological Society of America (http://www.geron.org)’s (GSA) From Publication to Practice (http://www.geron.org/Publications/from-publication-to-pratice) series. Together they address both pain management and new labeling changes for one of the most popular pain medications, acetaminophen. Both issues aim to provide readers with information on how new advances in pain prevention, treatment, and management may improve care and quality of life for older adults. The From Publication to Practice series was launched last year to promote the translation of research into meaningful health outcomes. “Taken together, these two new resources will enable the gerontological community to identify opportunities to improve pain...
