The entire Gerritsen Beach community is named tertiary (last to be plowed) during snow storms.

Dear Commissioner Doherty,
I am writing to request that a change be made to the snow priority designation of one of the streets in my neighborhood, Seba Avenue. At minimum, the blocks between Gerritsen Avenue and 52 Seba Avenue should be upgraded from their current tertiary status to allow for the necessary rapid response time by the Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

As you know, ‘primary’ streets are the ones that are most concentrated in terms of traffic flow as well as facilities such as firehouses, hospitals, and nursing homes. Since these facilities are in high demand in times of emergency, there is a great need for these streets to be cleared.

The Gerritsen Beach neighborhood is currently comprised of all tertiary streets, with the exception of Gerritsen Avenue, which is a primary street. However, the Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department is located at 52 Seba Avenue, currently designated as a tertiary street. With tertiary designation, these first responders would be temporarily cut off from being able to respond, when needed. Making Seba Avenue a higher priority would provide better access and allow the Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department to operate quickly and efficiently, should an emergency arise.

With this first real impeding snow storm approaching the city I went to check on the map of street clasifacation. The sanitation department as part of pre-season preparations, street categories are reviewed and updated in accordance with the DSNY Public Street Snow Removal Classification criteria.

When you look at our area map you see a HUGE glaring yellow spot. We are third in line to get any attention.

Hopefully, this is the way it has always been. Hopefully, everything will we will see the same plowing as previous years. I just hope that last years storm is forcing us to be an afterthought. On second thought all we do have a lot of sanitation employees that live here

PRIMARY STREET – Any street that is:
A main traffic artery, main thoroughfare or a lifeline street such as highways, expressways, drives or bridges;
Feeder approaches to, and exits from bridges, tunnels, ferries, highways, airports;
All bus routes, private and city owned;
Streets which have located upon them facilities such as fire houses, police stations, hospitals, nursing homes, newspaper
plants, fuel distribution depots, transportation terminals, and schools;
All streets within CONCENTRATED food-produce, industrial, financial, theatrical-amusement, shopping, hospital or maritime (passenger and freight) areas;
All Snow Emergency Streets so designated by the Department of Transportation.

SECONDARY STREET – Any street that is:
Reasonably heavily trafficked but not a primary street;
Used as an alternate route for a primary street;
The short length of residential area streets that feed into primary streets;

TERTIARY STREETS – All other streets not heavily trafficked and not considered primary or secondary streets, including, but not limited to dead-end streets.

Councilman Lew Fidler is running for disgraced Carl Kruger seat in the 27th Senate District. As of 2012 we in Gerritsen Beach are not represented by the 27th district, but the 22nd district Marty Golden. However, Fidler currently represents us in the city council and his term is ending.

Acording to PolitickrNY, Frank Seddio is planning on running for Lew Fidler seat in the 46th District.

(NYC, New York) Joined by hundreds of supporters from the local community, Councilman Lew Fidler (D-Brooklyn) today, announced his candidacy for the recently vacated 27th State Senate District. Accepting the designations of both the Democratic and Independence parties, Fidler vowed to work with great cooperation, collaboration, and communication to restore the people’s faith in common-sense government. The special election to fill the vacant seat has been called for March 20th.

In a clear sign of the thorough and inclusive campaign Fidler is running, he released a list of 266 [attached] community, civic, and faith-based leaders who have declared their support, reflecting the great diversity and strength of effort behind the Fidler candidacy.

“In my campaign, the people come first, and I am most gratified to have the support of such a broad group of civic, religious, and ethnic leaders from every corner and thread of the district,” said Fidler. “It is because they know me and my record that they can trust I will work hard on things that matter. I have always viewed representing the people as a unique privilege, and a public trust that may not be breached.”

The list of supporters lining up behind the Fidler campaign is noteworthy for the inclusion of an overwhelming number of both Rabbis and other prominent Jewish institutional leaders, as well as leaders of the Russian-American community, two groups whose key support was lacking in the most recent special election in New York City. Most notably, the list is headed by Mayor Ed Koch.

Fidler emphasized his philosophy of government, “The Four Cs”:

“You have to have Common sense. The kind of common sense that tells you not to raise property taxes when we are in a foreclosure crisis or to understand that the cost of providing a homeless child with a shelter bed is less than the cost of leaving that child out on the street.”

“You’ve got to Communicate. Every now and then government needs to shimmy down from the ivory tower and hear what people want and need in their communities and in their lives.”

“You’ve got to have Character, to know right and wrong.”

“And then you’ve got to have Chutzpah…so that, once you’ve used your common sense, and discerned right from wrong, you have the gumption to say it where, when and how it needs to be said.”

In closing, Fidler added that he was adding a fifth “C”: “You’ve got to Challenge what’s been done before to finally change the dysfunction that has occurred in the past. This past year, Governor Cuomo showed that he can actually make Albany work. If I am blessed by the voters of the 27th district with the opportunity to represent them in Albany, I will not sit on the back bench; I will do my darndest to make sure that we succeed in changing the culture in Albany, and make it work for things that people truly care about and need.”

It started on Aster Ct but now every block in the new section is getting stop lines. The NYC DOT painted the outline of stop lines on every block.

In the last two days, there have been more than five separate brush fires incidents back weeds ie. weeds surrounding Gerritsen Beach. These fires were large and due to the dryness of the area fast moving.

Most area FDNY units in the our area as well as the Vollies were called in to help with the blaze.  A few FDNY vehicles including the Brush Fire Unit (BFU-6) became stuck on debris for more than three hours. Additional Staten Island brush fire units had to be called in to control the brush.

This Graffiti Artist criminal recently spray painted the Knights of Columbus and New Dutch.

There was a fatal hit and run scooter accident tonight at Gerritsen and Plumb 1st. The victim is said to be a local delivery driver at Lucky Star.

A white Nissan SUV type plate FHV-9034 New York, traveling south on Gerritsen Ave. at a high rate of speed and blew through the red light at Gerritsen Ave. & Avenue V, struck a delivery man from Lucky Star on Knapp St with such force that it threw him out of his shoes and socks and left blood on the plate, the delivery man landed on the hood of the car and was taken half way down the block before falling off. The scooter landed one quarter down the block from the impact. The Vollies arrived at the scene and started CPR on the delivery man due to being in Cardiac Arrest, EMS arrived and they all worked on him for five minutes before taking him to the hospital. I then noticed the Lucky Star menus in the street by the scooter and went and informed the Lucky Star about there man and they went to talk to the NYPD about him.

They have in custody an 18 y/o female in Rockaway Queens.

The Vollies and FDNY were on scene preforming cpr and transportation.
