AeroFS Could Depose Dropbox as File-Syncing Ruler

For years now, Dropbox has been pretty much the gold standard of cloud-based file sync. Such a simple concept is bound to have plenty of competition, and indeed, the market is swamped with companies vying to sync files between your networked computers and other devices. I've tested several of these (most recently, SugarSync) and so far, have always come away disappointed. AeroFS promises to change that, and may give Dropbox a real run for its money. Currently in free but closed beta, AeroFS is open to the first two thousand PCWorld readers to use a special invitation code.

While still in its infancy, the simple AeroFS interface shows great promise, including server-based sync for those who need it.This review is based on a recent beta build that AeroFS's vendor, Air Computing, shared with me. Air Computing tells me that the beta will soon open for the general public, but until that happens, they have provided PCWorld with two thousand invitations for our readers. Adobe has been producing its Photoshop Elements image-editing and -organizing software for a full decade now. Each successive version acquires more tools, additional features, and greater refinement; and Elements 10 ($100, or $80 as an upgrade as of September 20, 2011) remains the best consumer-level image editor you can buy. But the organizer in Photoshop Elements 10--an increasingly important component of Elements--suffers from performance shortcomings that drag the entire product down.

Harmony Link Turns iOS and Android Devices Into Capable, but Flawed, Universal Remotes

Over the last decade or so, Logitech’s Harmony products have honed the fine art of consolidating controls for multiple home entertainment center components into handy and reasonably easy-to-set up universal remotes. With the Harmony Link—a base station priced at $100 (as of October 27, 2011) that works with free iOS and Android apps and a Wi-Fi network—Logitech lets you use your device to do everything its conventional high-end remotes can do and then some. But its software needs additional work to make the Link a truly satisfactory alternative to a hardware remote.

Black, shiny, and shaped like a small, 6-inch flying saucer, the Harmony Link hardware takes about half an hour or more to set up, depending on how many devices you need it to control. That's not significantly long; other universal remotes I've used have required about the same. Logitech provides a small printed booklet with pretty good instructions that wisely begin by directing you to gather the make and model information on all devices you intend to control—your TV, cable/satellite box, home theater receiver, DVD or Blu-ray Disc player, game consoles, DVRs, and any other set-top boxes.

The booklet even provides a page for noting down this information, as well as the inputs associated with each device—for example, I wrote down that my Nintendo Wii connects to my HDTV via the set’s second set of component video inputs.

Once you’ve gathered the info (or as much of it as you can), you connect the Link to a power source and to a PC using the included USB cable, then proceed to the MyHarmony web site, where you are prompted to set up an account if you don’t already have one. This instruction produced one of the few glitches I encountered in setting up the Link: I had created a MyHarmony account for a previous remote, and logging in produced the settings for that device. It turns out there’s no way to overwrite or delete those settings—I had to create a new account using a different e-mail address for my user ID, because you can’t use the same user ID for two Harmony remotes. Interestingly, however, you don’t have to use a genuine e-mail address, just something that looks like one (fakename@fakeaddress.com would work)—Logitech doesn’t verify the address, since it’s just for log-in purposes.

Once you’ve set up the account, MyHarmony detects the Link and directs you to enter the device information you’d collected earlier. (If you don’t have all the make and model details, the site can help you figure out the right remote codes with partial info—or, if that fails, you can use a device’s remote to teach its control codes to the Link.)

Logitech maintains an extensive database of consumer electronics that it uses to map their remote buttons to the Link, and I was impressed to find that MyHarmony had records for everything I use: a 2007 Panasonic plasma TV, a Motorola Comcast cable box, an older Kenwood home theater receiver, an Oppo Blu-ray Disc player, the aforementioned Wii, a TiVo Premiere DVR, and a Roku2 XS media streamer. Even more impressively, the database recognized an Oppo 1-to-3 HDMI splitter I use to connect three HDMI devices (the cable box, the Blu-ray player, and the Roku) to a single input on my HDTV (which has only two HDMI inputs—I have the TiVo on the first one).

And once you’ve input all the device information, you create what Logitech calls activities—actions you want to be able to perform using the Link—and identify which devices and inputs are involved. For example, to watch TV on my Comcast cable box, I use the TV, the cable box, the home theater receiver (for audio), and the 3-to-1 splitter set to the second input.

MyHarmony proposes several typical activities—playing games, watching movies, and so forth—and suggests which devices might be involved, but you’re free to set it straight if it errs, or to create so-called custom activities. You can also create multiple instances of the same activity—for example, you might have several ways of watching movies. During setup you also provide the Wi-Fi network name and password that will put the Link on the same network as the iPad or iPhone you’ll be using as a universal remote. And you assign it a name, so that you can use the iPad/iPhone to control multiple Links, should you choose to install another one.

With the Link set up, I next installed the Harmony software for my mobile devices (an iPhone and iPad) and logged into my MyHarmony account (when you do the same, choose a Link to control, if you’ve set up more than one). I synced the app with my MyHarmony account, which gives it all the information you’ve programmed into the Link.

With that, the system is ready for use. Detach the USB cable, and plug in the Link near your home entertainment center. I was dubious at first that the Link would be able to communicate with all my devices, since some weren’t really in direct line of sight—a requirement for the infrared technology that most remote controls use. But from its perch in front of my HDTV, the Link easily responded to commands for all components, including a couple on a shelf below the Link.

Should you have devices that don’t respond to commands issued by an iPad or iPhone, you can expand the field of the Link signal’s reach by attaching an included IR blaster (basically a second IR transmitter at the end of a cable) to the Link and positioning it near the components that aren’t responding. The Link has ports for two blasters, so you can purchase a second one if need be.

By default, the Harmony Link iPad software at launch displays the primary TV interface, which is a souped-up, lavishly illustrated program guide (obtained based on the cable TV service you specified during setup). The guide isn’t a conventional grid; rather, it shows a featured program in a large window atop a horizontally scrollable strip that displays thumbnails for programming on other channels. When the guide doesn’t have thumbnails for a show, it uses generic art. On the iPad’s roomy screen, the guide looks attractive—but it’s not that easy to use.

For starters, the scrollbar shows only three or four channels at a time, and scrolling through the complete lineup can be time-consuming. You can, however, opt to reduce the number of channels shown by using filters for program categories such as movies or news.

One issue I noticed: The program guide appeared to be missing channels. Logitech, which gets program-guide info from a third party, says it is looking into this.

More problematic is the way the software handles other remote-control functions. Tapping on the right side of the screen produces a skinny bar with a few basic controls—channel up/down, volume, mute—and dragging the bar to the left expands it to show a graphical user interface with more control buttons for the activity’s primary device. But some controls I use frequently with my cable box—the MyDVR and OnDemand buttons—were not displayed at all; to get to them, I had to drag the control area out even further, to display a search box atop a complete written list of commands for each device. Then I either had to search for the command or scroll through the rather lengthy list. Both methods eventually got me to the commands I wanted, but neither was as convenient as simply being able to press a handy button.

Other issues, some of them puzzling, came up. For example, the full page of controls for the default “Watch TV” activity (which I assigned to the Comcast box) produced the buttons on my TiVo, instead. And when I tried to set up the Roku as a custom activity, the graphical interface would operate the TV only. It turned out that to have the onscreen interface control the Roku, I had to set up the Roku as an additional “Watch Movies” activity.

Also, the software wasn’t very smart about turning devices off and on. When I wanted to switch from using the Roku to watching TV, tapping the “Watch TV” command turned off the home theater receiver. Because my cable box is also my DVR, I never turn it off—but switching to another activity invariably did just that.

The Harmony Link has the potential to turn iPads or iPhones into great universal remotes, but until it can better reproduce the way I actually interact with the components of my system, it’s not a good substitute for hardware remotes that let you exercise finer control. I would like, for example, to see the ability to create my own group of frequently used commands that would be easily accessible via a graphical interface. I’m hoping Logitech devotes more thought to a future iteration.

Activities for the week are easy to input, and you can set them to recur regularly. You can also choose to have Cozi notify you of an event via email or text. All members of your Cozi circle--which can include grandparents, and friends--can see your calendar, so all of the key players are in the loop if you'd like to ask grandma to watch the kids for an evening, or if you want to invite your best friend to attend your daughter's ballet recital.

If you use a calendar application other than Cozi, you can import individual Cozi circle member's Cozi schedules into it. Conversely, you can export your Google, Apple iCal, or Outlook calendar into Cozi. In either situation, the imported calendar will be accessible as a view-only file. To enable full editing, you must download Cozi Outlook Toolbar.

The mobile version of Cozi lacks the ability to filter an individual member's calendar (so that, for example, you access only Dad's calendar entries); this feature is available exclusively on the Web version of the app.
Sharing Information

Share your Evernote notebook with your partner to keep everyone on the same page.Many a domestic altercation might have been avoided if the contenders had shared some piece of vital information early on. But how do you make that kind of sharing a reality if you and your partner rarely have time to talk over plans and upcoming time commitments?

The answer may come from an app many people already use: Evernote. You can use this versatile note-taking service to share information such as recipes (handwritten or clipped from the Web), holiday shopping lists (with boxes to mark), pictures of furniture you may want to purchase, or an audio recording of your thoughts about an upcoming home remodel.

If you have a free Evernote account and share a laptop with your partner, though, you significant other will be able to read your notes but not add to them. Editing privileges among other perks, are reserved for premium account holders, who must pay $5 a month or $45 a year for the privilege.
Distributing Chores

Use Wunderlist to ensure that Thanksgiving chores get spread fairly around the family.Wunderlist, a free app, works across iOS, Windows, and Android. Unlike Evernote, which basically serves as a brain dump of notes, Web clippings, and other information, Wunderlist is geared toward managing tasks that have due dates. You can receive email reminders of your chores if you like.

Though designed for a single user, Wunderlist does offer some sharing properties--most notably, the ability to email or text a specific shopping list or task to a family member. For instance, you can share the task of cooking for Thanksgiving dinner with your spouse (with notes detailing your partner's responsibilities), or you can dispatch a Christmas decoration shopping list (since you did the buying last year!).

To share your task list, you upload it to CloudApp, an online file-sharing service. Sharing lists online is a feature available only on the Web version of Wunderlist. When you upload a list, the Wunderlist website generates a unique URL that you can send to friends--although again, as with Evernote, your friends won't be able to alter your list.
Compiling Grocery Lists
Create a list of groceries fast with GroceryIQ's great feature set.When you need to whip up a grocery list in a hurry, GroceryIQ is a good bet. Available in versions for iOS and Android, the app is noteworthy because it provides an impressive feature set for managing your shopping list. You can search for an item by typing (brand names will pop up if you wish to specify them) or by speaking aloud. The voice recognition feature is quite accurate and nifty when you don't have the time to type.

If you want another container of the same orange juice or cereal that you already have on hand, you can quickly input the items by using GroceryIQ's barcode scanner. After compiling your list, you can share it with someone else, though the recipient must individually register for the app.

GorceryIQ's syncing is occasionally unreliable and slow. A rival app, Mighty Grocery, is better in this respect, but its interface is more complicated than GroceryIQ's, and you have to upgrade from the free version to the full ($2.99) version if you wish to use Mighty Grocery's barcode scanner.
Comparing Prices

ShopSavvy allows you to compare prices of the same item with ease.Have you ever wondered while you were out shopping whether you could buy the same item elsewhere for a better price? The answer is most likely "Yes," but how do you find out quickly?

One drawback: Though the map feature presents the weather in your exact location, you can't move the pin around easily to determine the weather details in nearby areas. Who doesn't like big, burly men shooting bad guys in outer space? Gun Bros offers exactly that: It's a universe-spanning bad-guy-shooting game full of cartoonish space marines blowing things up.

Gun Bros is primarily a shoot 'em up, but it has a social element; for example, you can add "Bros" (via Facebook or Open Feint) who help you out during missions. As in other shooters, the main objective in Gun Bros is to survive wave after wave of enemies. In this case, the enemies are part of the "Tyrannical Oppressors Of Life," or T.O.O.L.

Gameplay is fairly simple: You use two virtual joysticks, one on the left side of the screen and the other on the right. The left joystick is for moving your character, while the right joystick is for aiming and shooting your (extremely large) guns.

The controls are a bit different from the setup of many touchscreen mobile games (usually games offer just one joystick and a firing button), and so they take a little getting used to. The aim/shoot joystick is also a bit small considering the many enemies that come your way--It's far too easy to overshoot the acceptable touch area and wonder why your guns aren't firing. Still, this dual-joystick setup allows you to move your character in one direction while shooting in another, and once you've mastered the controls it's definitely a handy ability to have.

Killing enemies isn't the only objective in Gun Bros. You must also pick up a special ore ("Xplodium") as you move around the map and explore planets. You can take your collected Xplodium to the refinery and turn it into gold pieces, which you can then use to purchase weapons, armor, and upgrades at the store. The store also takes a second currency, Warbucks, which cost real money. Some items are buyable only with Warbucks, though they aren’t necessary to beat the game.

Gun Bros also has lots of free content. It provides several planets, and each planet has several levels. Since levels open up in order, to access the next level you'll need to survive all of the enemy waves of the previous level. However, new planets open based on your character's rank (you gain experience points with each battle you undertake, even if you don't survive), so you'll encounter plenty of variety.

Gun Bros is a fun, if over-the-top, shoot-'em-up game. The controls take a lot of getting used to and can be a bit fussy at times, but the graphics look great, the levels have a ton of content, and the game is almost entirely free.
