Opportunities (and Dangers) of Visual Storytelling

A Talk by Reif Larsen

Gestalten proudly invites you to an evening with Reif Larsen, author of the critically acclaimed novel The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet (Die Karte meiner Träume).

The book is widely admired for its beautifully imaginative storyline and unique visual narrative that features illustrated maps, diagrams, and sketches, which mirror the protagonist’s obsession with cartography.

Larsen will explore the ways that visuals can tell stories, and in particular the sometimes fraught relationship between text and image. Drawing upon diverse sources including the marginalia from his own book, airline safety cards, hand drawn maps, illuminated manuscripts, and the current cultural obsession with information graphics, Larsen will unpack the opportunities (and dangers) of visual storytelling, a field of increasing prominence in today's visual-heavy world.

The talk will be followed by a conversation with Gestalten’s Sven Ehmann, our in-house data visualization and infographics enthusiast. Ehmann is co-editor of Visual Storytelling: Inspiring a New Visual Language and Data Flow book series.

Reif Larsen's debut novel, The Selected Works Of T.S. Spivet, was a New York Times bestseller and is currently being adapted for the screen by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie). Larsen's essays and fiction have appeared in Tin House, one story, The Millions, and The Believer. He is currently the writer-in-residence at the Dutch Institute for Advanced Study and working on another novel about puppets and the uncertainty principle.

Book Launch and Talk at Gestalten Space

To celebrate the release of Aram Bartholl’s first monograph Aram Bartholl: The Speed Book, Gestalten will host a talk with the artist in conversation with Evan Roth.

Fellow artist and researcher Evan Roth will start the evening by introducing us to the experimental work of Aram Bartholl, which explores the place where space and cyberspace mingle and mangle each other—a realm that uses as little technology as possible while still speaking a digital language. Together, they will guide us through wonderfully skewed visions of our society under the influence of the internet. On this occasion, Evan Roth will also present a series of his own new web-based pieces. We'll ring out the event with drinks and music.

Glazed Paradise

Sculptures and Photography by Mark Jenkins

Gestalten is proud to present the first solo show in Germany by the renowned American artist Mark Jenkins, who uses ordinary packing tape to create life-size human or animal forms. Jenkins is best known for his clever installations of these startlingly lifelike tape sculptures in urban and natural spaces as well as indoor environments such as cafeterias, toilets, and art galleries. This expert staging of his work, especially his clothed human figures, provokes various—often strong—reactions from passersby and expands his interventions into powerful performances.

“Glazed Paradise” will feature new sculptures specifically conceived for this show and made by the artist in Berlin, which will be unveiled at the January 19th opening. These will be complemented by a limited edition of smaller tape sculptures. In addition to Mark Jenkins’s sculptural work, “Glazed Paradise” will include photographs of select installations that reveal how compelling the interaction between his artwork and its environment can be.

To coincide with the show, Gestalten is releasing the artist’s first monograph The Urban Theater: Mark Jenkins. A limited number of signed copies will be available for purchase at the show and from shop.gestalten.com.

Exhibition at Gestalten Space

Gestalten is proud to present My Quiet of Gold by Cooper & Gorfer, a striking photographic journey documenting the stories of love, sorrow, and betrayal from rural Kyrgyzstan.

The artist duo Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer work at the intersection of contemporary photography with painting of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Their photographic installations move fluidly between reality and imagination, technical and artistic interpretation, and collective myth and personal narrative.

For their exhibition My Quiet of Gold, Cooper and Gorfer traveled to the rural areas of Kyrgyzstan to collect sagas and stories in conversations and interviews with local inhabitants. Out of these tales, the duo created striking photographic portraits that go far beyond mere documentation to tell and visually interpret romantic-melancholy stories in completely new and non-linear ways.
