I read this book non-stop for two days. Well written and although this lifestyle would never suit my needs, I was fascinated by the process and the amount of quality living Ben engaged in for his years of travel. I learned a lot about the regions and travel itself. It was humorous, sobering and very thought-provoking. I'd highly recommend this book.

How to Get Gone is excellent. Iâ€™ll skip clichÃ©s like â€œit transported me to blah blah blahâ€ (though it did), and just say that it got me imagining things I hadnâ€™t before. As I tore through it, I pulled up maps of Seoul and Jeddah and looked for the districts in which the author hung, browsed the website of The Wolfhound Irish Pub (â€œCome for the Food. Stay for the Party.â€), and looked at pictures from Red Sea scuba divers. The world is a big place, full of adventure, if you look.I found it impossible not to contemplate my own life in contrast to the authorâ€™s. He and I have chosen different paths. His book speaks to the many, many things he has gained yet also murmurs some regret for the things he lost. Thatâ€™s life. Anything you do is done at the exclusion of all other things. Thereâ€™s beauty in that. The authorâ€™s adventures were in his travels; mine are in my three sons. Iâ€™m thankful for what I have, and Iâ€™m thankful I can spend a few hours learning about what I donâ€™t.Maybe I canâ€™t â€œget goneâ€ like he can, but instead of the boring family hauler â€“ adding to the â€œsea of Ford Fusionsâ€ in an office parking lot â€“ my next car can be a little impractical but a lot of fun. Maybe I canâ€™t fly to Beirut on a whim, but I can certainly get my boys out for a hike in the beautiful woods of Michigan and take them to the Upper Peninsula so they can dip their toes into magnificent Lake Superior. I donâ€™t know that the author would agree, but to me the central truth of this book is the critical importance about doing things on purpose. That doesnâ€™t mean you must have an elaborate plan for everything, but you must make daily decisions about what you do and where you go. Thatâ€™s something we can all do, expatriate or national.Final note: this is without a doubt the best travel book the author has ever written. Buy it!

I enjoyed this book immensely. The book was well-written and the author was genuinely transparent about his experiences. His thought processes and motives inspiring his travels were simple yet fascinating. It was eye opening to read Ben's thoughts and emotions during good times and bad, during small surprises and big, at each phase of his journeys.We have adult children that have traveled the world and lived outside the United States, though not on the author's scale. I now understand more of what my own kids have experienced because Ben shared so openly.Looking forward to Ben's next book!

A friend of mine gave me this book and I am so glad they did. One of the best experiences I have ever had as a lifelong reader of books was the time I spent reading this book.

Probably the baddest (and I mean best) classic Fire Engine Little Golden Book in existence. I've read it with my two-year old future fire fighter almost everyday since Christmas 2014. The fire engines in this book aren't littered with all the accoutrerments as modern fire engines of today...but the book is action packed...I won't play spoiler here...but the rescue and subsequent window jump is pretty spectacular! Keeps us on the edge of the recliner every time we read this classic together!

A classic book from a bygone era that helped raise generations of children. Unique, imagination-inspiring pictures accompany simple words that culminate in a really fun story. If you have a toddler who likes fire engines, then this is the book for him. Little Golden Books at their best!

Love all these classic Little Golden Books but for the little boys who are smitten with fire trucks, or trucks in general, this is a good one.Arrived when expected in perfect condition.

My 4 year old who loves fire trucks really enjoys this book. A cute little story just right for his age - not too many words per page, but not too few. Just right.

I used this book as table decoration for a baby shower with fireman theme. The dad to be is a fireman so I thought they would enjoy reading the book to baby as well. Even though book was vintage it was in like new condition and charming story.

Little Golden Books are perfect for children, especially boys who love firetrucks.

I got this a year ago when my boy was 2 and he still asks to read it. I have to hide it away sometimes to get a break from it. I only wish it wasn't so stereotypical with all male characters but besides that it's a wonderful book for a firetruck fan toddler.

I am producing a video about a suburban volunteer fire company, and I bought the book so the firemen I'm interviewing could comment, on the record, about what the story shows firefighters doing, versus what today's firemen actually do. The book was written about 60 years ago, so there are plenty of changes to talk about. There are also several activities it shows which are either puzzling or, more likely, simply bad or dangerous practices. But the on-camera interviews brought those issues out, so I found the book to be helpful in making the video more interesting and useful. Also, the public response toward firefighters, as depicted in the story, was consistently favorable -- a response which was greatly appreciated by the firefighters I interviewed.

My family just stayed a week in Bocagrande/Cartegena (so I can't speak about how the guide works for the entire country). I can say that VIVA Columbia! was far better than the Lonely Planet Columbia guide we bought for this specific city. I've always used Lonely Planet when traveling and they haven't let me down until now. VIVA was much more comprehensive when it came to explaining the sights in the old city and gave much better restaurant suggestions. Bocagrande (the beach area where local prefer to stay) was not even mentioned in Lonely Planet, but had a detailed write-up in VIVA. We had an excellent stay at the historic Hotel Caribe, which was not even covered in the LP.This book was a great bargain and I'm glad we had it on our tablet, as it far outperformed LP this time around.

I have only recently purchased this travel guide as an e-book and to date, have only browsed through it and read thoroughly a few sections. It appears to be very comprehensive and, unlike most other guide books, it gives the dates on which a section or set of facts were last updated. This is a big plus. Another big plus is the price - about half that of Lonely Planets, for example. One word of warning about the e-book version which applies to all the titles I have downloaded so far: you can increase the size of the text but not the size of maps or tables! This means that you need a good magnifying glass to make any sense of them. So we will be buying a hard version of this book and a big map for our visit to Colombia this winter. We are intending to spend around 6 weeks in the country so we will have a better idea of how good the guide is after that. But, so far, so good!

The feature I believe most people will appreciate about this guide is that it contains up-to-date information. This book is "time-stamped" with the date of the information. Also, you view updates at [...]. Additionally, with my Kindle version, one just needs to tap the links on the pages to view the web pages with additional information. One downside of the Kindle version is the limited viewing of the maps. Otherwise, this book is a good buy.

As I use e books I bought this and the 2013 Lonely Planet as guide books to use during my trip, because I had read all the bad reviews about early versions of LP Colombia guide book.Overall I found this book to be useful and informative but I found myself using the Lonely Planet as my primary source of information and using this as a backup. Overall I found Lonely Planet better laid out, easier to use and more accurate.I liked the fact that this book has the dates that information was last checked, but was concerned when I came across some hotel recommendation that had not been checked for more than 5 years. However it was useful in giving me some ideas for places to stay when the LP options where all booked out.The layout is not optimised for use on ipad or e-readers with no cross referencing and maps that are divided over 2 pages being v difficult to use.But overall I am happy I had this second option and would consider buying these guides again for a second source of information when travelling.

All the information of the sites/places that need to be visited is there. Maybe more information/details could be usefull, but that is part of the adventure isn't it.I totally recomend it

About the Author

John G. Rogers was indoctrinated in the correct use of sea language as a boy sailing with his father, brother, and friends at Nonquitt on Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. As a young sailor he graduated from Herreshoff 12 1/2s to cruising yachts, including crew experience on an Alden schooner. After leaving Harvard College in 1936 he got his sea legs in six Matson Line ships in the Pacific. During World War II he served in the Pacific aboard the destroyer escort Stadtfeld, logging 100,000 miles and returning as a lieutenant commander. After the war he became a stockbroker in San Francisco with E. F. Hutton and Company, and pursued his interest in yachts and small boats with a Hinckley Owens cutter and with the tugboat Beaver, kept in Sausalito as a weekend retreat. Before his death in 1992 John Rogers served as trustee of the National Maritime Museum Association and as curator of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

I work on Japanese-English maritime terms and know how hard it is to piece together all the knowledge required to make an accurate and a reliable terminology. To make it also interesting and fun to read is a great accomplishment. Rogers makes it a downwind sail.

Matthew Christian Reinhart attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn as an industrial design major (concentrating in toy design). Turns out Matthew Reinhart is the mastermind behind other iconic pop up books like The Pop-Up Book of Phobias and the nightmares one. In this book, each pop up is restrained to a localized area like a book, and there are several books on each page. Though there are few pages, there are intricate pop ups for each movie befitting of Pixar's attention to detail. I had forgotten about the lesser known Pixar films and it was nostalgic and fun to be reminded of them. Ratatouille stole the show.

Wow! One page is fantastic, the next even better, and the next better and on and on!

Excellent!!! Received mine today and this book is fantastic and all the work and detail, oh my gosh I can't say enough great things. Totally awesome!!

Adobe's books are generally poorly done, but this one takes the cake for sorry instructional books. It takes ambiguity to new hights. If you enjoy being lost... this book is for you! You should have a fair head of hair before starting this book for when it's over you will have pulled most of it out.Adobe should be ashamed for publishing this book.RIP OFF

Great step by step book on how to use Illustrator 9. Just like being in a classroom with instructor Clear screen photos

With all Classroom in a Book courses, your experience is determined by your own effort. Adobe has constructed a thoughtful series of lessons to make any user comfortable working in Illustrator.I have heard two competing (and contrary) objections to this book. People complain that there is a) either not enough or b) too much information in the Classroom in a Book series. It is true that Adobe has not developed a course that custom fits the requirements of every single possible user. This can hardly be held against them. They have created a series of straightforward courses for intermediate users. Neither this book (nor the application it is designed to teach) is for absolute beginners. It is for people who are not comfortable in front of their computer. Nor should an expert user looking for some advanced tricks and tips purchase it. There are other books available to fit these needs.Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a Book does a wonderful job orienting a typical computer user to a heavy hitting vector based graphics application. If you take the time to complete this course, you will know your way around Illustrator. By properly learning the skills featured in this book, you will be prepared to absorb the sorts of tricks you have always wanted to learn

Typical of the "Classroom in a Book" series, this book is set up as a series of lessons. They take you through the major functions of Illustrator providing both instructional overviews and hands-on exercises. Lessons-wise, I can't fault the authors. They did a bang up job of hitting all of the major functions of the program.I would however like to warn users to realize that this book and the others in the series are really not for beginners. Illustrator like its sister tool Photoshop packs A LOT of functionality. If you are a beginner and you start going through these lessons, you may feel VERY overwhelmed. I strongly suggest beginners start with another perhaps out of the SAMS 24 hrs version. Good intro. Then buy this book and try the lessons. You really need the grounding in the application so you won't feel blown away.I really did like this book, but it is truly for intermediate to advanced users only.

If you are new to any Adobe software, the best way to learn it, is the Classroom in a Book. These books are well-written, the exercises are excellent and easy to follow and Adobe does a good job of setting up a logical order of features to learn. If you buy this book and complete it, cover to cover, you won't be an Illustrator expert. You will, however, have an excellent foundation to becoming an expert!As a professional designer, I have been using Adobe products for years now. Every time a new version of Photoshop or Illustrator comes out, I purchase the Classroom in a Book to go along with it. Not only do I learn the new features, I also fill gaps in my knowledge. (You'd be surprised how often we "experts" don't know (or forget) some of the basics, making some of our tasks more difficult than they need to be.Another note, if you are new to design, pay careful attention to the look of the completed projects. The were obviously put together by excellent designers.My only complaint with Adobe is...given the price of the software, these books should be included in the package.

I was so surprised to see this book being trashed by so many others. I found it was superb at getting me up and started with Illustrator. Many other reviewers accused this book of being a rehash of the manual; this is true. The book in fact contains less info than the manual, and is much less of a reference, BUT unlike the manual, it has tutorials which start with the fundamentals and work towards more advanced techniques (much like a CLASSROOM course would). I am a normal person who learned Illustrator using this book, and was never upset by any aspect of it. I'm not sure what everyone else expected their copies to do, they won't take out the garbage or mow the lawn, it's a book, try reading it.

I liked the book and was excellent by itself. Illustrator is not a program or subject which can be learned in a weekend it takes time. This book walks you through the information step by step. It's frustrating at first if your a windows guy like me the set-up is so different in the Adobe environment.What's neat is that the cd within book works on either MAC Apple or MS Windows operating systems for the tutorials. If you can take a class in conjunction with this book and your learning curve will greatly increase plus lowering your fustration. It took me approximently five to six weeks to get through the complete book of lessons, but it was well worth the time spent. I was naive at first, that I could use book and learn illustrator 9.0 in 24 hours, since I have already worked with many other drawing platforms such as Auto CAD 2000.After learning the program I can draw like you would not believe its a very powerful graphic drawing program simialar to CAD. But is designed for the artist or illustrator instead of the engineer. I can design my own christmas cards, web illustrations, blueprints, and other professional drawings with ease.As my title explains this is not a beginers book, but a "course book" of 15 lessons take your time and work through the lessons on your computer and you to will discover the benefit of illustrator 9.0 for yourself.

After the disappointment of Alien Covenant, I was left craving for a fix of new Aliens-universe content. River of Pain more than made up for it. Thoroughly entertaining, if you like Aliens and you're on the fence, get it. First time I've ever listened to an "e-book", it has opened me up to the whole genre. I listened to it in the car with my wife over a few long drives and we were sad every time we reached our destination because we had to pause it!

I am loving these Alien audio performances !! Itâ€™s like listening to a whole new alien movie.

God, where to start...Prior to this I listed to the dramatization for "Out of Shadows" which I absolutely adored, but "River of Pain" got on my nerves, BIG TIME!I would give 5 stars for the way the dramatization was made, for the sound effects which were on point, for the whole Alien atmosphere, which they managed to create.Was lovely and allowed me to emerge myself into the story.However, I would give 0 stars for the story, the characters and dialogues...Jesus Christ!It was interesting to know what happened to the colony on LV 426, how they ended up all huddled together ...dead or "impregnated" with monsters, prior to the arrival of the Marines from "Aliens", but the story itself, as it was portrayed in this dramatization ..made me want to flung my phone across the room, at least a dozen times!There were no characters that I could root for or care about. The amount of stupidity portrayed in the dialogues is out of this world; the characters unlikable and incapable.I finally gave up and just rooted for the Xenomorphs to kill everyone, because I just could not take it anymore.I would like to say that Russel and Anne Jorden, would definitely deserve the medal for the worsts parents in the universe! For goodness sake..how these 2 would ever managed to get a job as prospectors, scientists, on the colony is beyond me (It doesn't matter we're talking about fictional characters, we should still have standards.); considering the limitless stupidity they displayed throughout this book, Anne's 2nd grade vocabulary and observation skills and Russel's damn annoying self.I absolutely loathed these 2 characters, even more than Dr. Reese, if that was ever possible. It was an especially bad combination : the stupidity of the dialogues and the 2 actors voices : Anne Friel and Marc Warren, which simply annoyed me beyond belief.I'm sorry to say, but Tim Lebbon definitely did a much better job than Christopher Golden, "Out of Shadows" was 10 times better, when it comes to the story and the characters.I don't have words to express how utterly stupid everyone on LV 426 was and how a high level of imbecility seemed to be the primary factor in choosing who got to be on LV 426, in the 1st place.Thank goodness I finished this and my phone survived the experience.

Fans of Laurel Lefkow will be pleased to know the actress returns from Out of the Shadows to once again voice Ripley, delivering a pitch-perfect performance that eerily and uncannily resembles Sigourney Weaverâ€™s original performance.Itâ€™s not until the mid-way point of the production that things kick into high gear after the Jordenâ€™s receive orders from Weyland-Yutani to survey a set of very specific coordinates, which lead them to a very familiar derelict ship, and a very familiar discovery. From that point on, the production gets it Alien freakshow going good.While River of Pain is an entertaining listen, due largely to Dirk Maggsâ€™ intense production values and fully immersive soundscape, and solid performances across the board from the dramaâ€™s large cast, this does come with a caveat. This is an enjoyable listen, but nothing about the story is particularly surprising. Anybody who has seen Aliens knows exactly what this story is about and how it will unravel right from the very start (although the very last moments do provide an interesting twist and potential for future exploration). The cast and crew are certainly game for it all, though, and Iâ€™m certainly happy to listen to an Audible Original, particularly when it involves one of my favorite sci-fi horror franchises. From a production standpoint, this book is certainly a success and is chock-full of atmosphere, gunfire, screams, and alien threats lurking right behind you.With this latest release, Audible has now produced two dramas based on novels originally published as part of Titan Booksâ€™ 2014 trilogy. Alien: Sea of Sorrows, written by James A. Moore, has yet to be adapted, but Iâ€™m keeping my fingers crossed for an Alien Day 2018 release.

I bought it because of DVD. I was hopping to get interactive studding. But DVD contain only 3 video interviews with USCIS officer, 5 quizzes (10 question each - some of them repeat each other from quiz to quiz) and some interactive menu links which open one of dialogs from one of three interviews. That's it. No 100 civic questions from history, no help with forms, no English tests or anything like it. DVD is useless unless you want to watch over and over interview where interviewed endlessly ask officer to repeat the questions.As for book, it's a waste of money. The book suppose to help you study history, help to fill up N400 (they could simply fill up it with fake info for sample sake) but it doesn't explain what needs to fill up in paragraph. let say Part4 paragraph B: "Care of______" care of WHAT?! The book does not give an explanation. There are more questions asking you in this book than answers explaining them like: "Why is voting both right and responsibility?" or: "What does the Statue of Liberty means to you? What do you think of when you see it?". The book does not have answers. And those only samples of questions.Another aspect of the book is it ask you "Find someone who has become a US citizen" to interview him. What is that?! Joke? The book suppose to give right and direct answers not to send you away for someone help who may be even does not have a correct answer.Another thing: "If you have trouble to apply for citizenship ... think of ways to find professionals in immigration and naturalization in your community ". The book send you away again! If I'd find professional why would I need this book?And last one, whoever did this DVD could use at least one actor with clear English and refer that interview in the book. Instead they selected girl who barely speak English. It's not only irritate but give you wrong stereotype of behavior and answers. The book and DVD suppose to teach how to do things right in right manner. Those interviews (they offered) could be as a sample of different people behavior but not a guide for exam. If I were you I'd look for another sources. Well one of them could be an info on USCIS official site. Or simply search on Google "USCIS The Naturalization Test" You'll get all what you need for free including video and studding material.PS. For anyone desperate for hope and solutions about someone you love who has autism, BUY AND READ THIS BOOK! I am new to autism, as my son was recently diagnosed with ASD, and since the diagnosis was given i have been hungry and desperate for answers. I want to understand autism and find ways to help my son, to on any way diminish the struggle he feels every day of his beautiful life. This book contains clear explanations and offers solutions. I highly recommended this book!!!

If you are familiar with the organization Defeat Autism Now, or are well-versed in bio-genetics then this book may be redundant to you. I had heard about some of the research and ideas presented in this book, but this was the first time I had actually read a full book on the subject.The research and information indicating that some people are more susceptible to environmental toxins is compelling. He recommends that the first place you start is going to a gluten-free and casein-free diet. This is something anyone, (with some considerable effort, extra cash for groceries and a local store with gluten-free options available) can do at home. However, from there you enter an entirely new world of homeopathic medicine that is rarely, if ever, covered by insurance and quite expensive. Many of the treatments require a doctors supervision, blood work and other tests and expensive supplement treatments. I took his advice and looked in my local area for a doctor associated with Defeat Autism now and the first three visits, which are all just evaluation with no actual tests or treatment, was going to cost over $2000, and they don't take insurance. (It may be different in your area, but this is an example, since some would find that amount accessible.) This simply is not feasible on my family's current income. Dr. Bock does give some good ideas on how to minimize the cost and possibly get insurance to cover some of the blood work and tests, but at this point in time his methods are an expensive proposition. Of course, now I am fighting the urge to be guilt ridden for not "finding the money" to help my child. What price can you put on that??!! The truth of the matter, though, is that insurance doesn't pay for the treatments because it is still considered to be unproven. I have no doubt that in time the traditional medical community will get more on board with many of these ideas. However, that is a lot of money to lay out when the level of chance that this MIGHT work is still so high. Honestly, I was hoping for something a little more doable when I picked up the book. That said, the gluten/casein free diet does seem to be helping my son to better manage his ADHD inspired angry outbursts. It is still not clear if this is psychosomatic for him or real, as he has reintroduced gluten/casein a couple of times without any of the dramatic responses Dr. Bock describes in his book.In terms of the book style itself, it does get a little preachy at times. I found, though, that if I kept reading he would eventually get off the soapbox and present more balanced views. He uses case studies to help show the type of work he does. I believe he is hoping that the reader will recognize one of these children in his/her own child, and thus add a level of relatability. He does do a pretty good job of explaining some higher level medical concepts in an easy to understand format, and there is a pretty extensive list of supplements and their descriptions included in the book for reference. His book seems to be a little different from other books on bio-genetics because he attempts to go beyond just focusing on autism. However, the majority of cases are when the other 3 "A"s are presenting with autism.

This book is very engaging, I honestly couldn't put it down! As the autism epidemic continues to rise (now 1 in 59--better diagnosis can only account for a fraction of this increase!), it is clear we must do something to help our children. I would love Dr. Bock to write a follow-up with all that he has learned in the last 11 years, but this book is a great place to start on the journey to recovery.

Really.Iâ€™ve just finished reading the relevant chapters on Autism.My first hint that this book was not very scholarly,were references made to Andrew Wakefield you might as well have included Jenny McCarty and Jim Carrey as experts(their is not Autistic).Wakefield had his medical license pulled by the British Medical Assoc. for fraudulent test results related to his so-called Autism tests. Interesting side point he was attempting to patent an alternative vaccine.As a grandfather of an Autistic Grandson Iâ€™m always looking for new materials on the subject this was a waste of money.No new material ,just another physician trying to make buck off a substandard book.Iâ€™d like my money back.

My sister-in-law was blessed with two granddaughters who were diagnosed autistic. After finding and reading Dr. Bock's book, then taking the girls for a diagnostic visit with him in California, it turns out THEY WERE NOT AUTISTIC at all. And now with proper diet and supplementation their conditions (BOTH of them) have been completely reversed.

Excellent! I highly recommend to anyone interested in looking outside the mainstream medical community to help your child. I had already purchased this book prior to taking my child to a ND but hadnâ€™t gotten a chance to read it. I was pleasantly surprised when I sat down and finally read it tonight. Wow, my daughter suffers from many of the issues suggested in the book and in fact the ND recommend many of these same things after seeing my daughters lab work. We are starting GF/CF diet as well as many other supplements and detoxification. Iâ€™m hopeful that we will be able to get her back on track. This book was very helpful in me gaining a further understanding of my daughters health issues outside of the short time I spend with her Dr.

Well written, lots of good info on supplements and the how & why they work. Best book I've read in years on health care. A must read for any parent dealing autism, ADHD, PANDAS, PANS, Lyme, asthma, autoimmune disorders, allergies, or complicated illnesses. Anyone wondering if there's a better way than prescription medication should definitely read this book, concrete answers will be discovered!

This is the very best book I have read on the topic of biomedical interventions for autism, but it's importance extends much further than that. Our children with autism are "canaries in the coal mine". Their illness is shouting at us to wake up to the realization that we are all suffering from toxic overload and inflammation that will eventually take us down, one way or another My old dog-eared, underlined, coffee-stained copy "walked off" with the nanny, so I came back to Amazon to purchase a second. While obviously the Beatles overshadow almost anything by anybody, McCartney, despite a few silly detours, output a remarkable collection of songs throughout the seventies. This book takes you from the final moments of the Beatles through to John Lennon's death and makes some sense of the erratic nature of his output.It also reminds you of the creative courage he showed by going from part of the world's biggest act, to touring in a bus in the UK playing spontaneous gigs at smaller venues just to reinvigorate his creative spirit.I've always loved the best of McCartney's 70s output even though there were moments of almost traumatically bad songs sprinkled in there (Mary had a little Lamb for god's sake?) and this book will take you through the formation or dissolution of Wings in all its incarnations as well as - to a lesser degree - covering the background of the Beatles ongoing saga.Although I purchased this on the Kindle, I actually bought it again in hardcover to have around as a bookshelf reference, such was my enjoyment of it.

Wow! Admit it, we assume superstar icons like Beatles, Paul, John, George and Ringo led idyllic lives, seamlessly creating some of the greatest music ever composed leading charmed lives we could only dream. Not so. Paul McCartney relates to journalist, Tom Doyle, the angst, tribulations and trials. Oh, the trials of post Beatle life including trial after court trial. And all the years of Beatlemania made it all the harder to continue a career with new musical ventures, most notably Wings. Gut wrenching, vexing, sometimes humerous this reader has his eyes opened to the complex world of the music industry. Who would have known the McCartneys lived hand to mouth, Paul's near nervous breakdown to his record setting record sales. Also, in detail is the loving, stable nearly normal life Linda and his children provided a foundation. I have this four stars because of a and tied confusing chronology. Also, sometimes I didn't care for Sir McCartney with his frugality, obsessive work ethic, and treatment of band mates. All part of this very interesting background to the music industry and a true musical legend The seventies and early eighties gone, the story happily continues.

There once was a man named Paul,Who used to be a Beatle and all,They had a falling out,With a thunder and shout,And then he became a solo artist.Man, my rhymes suck. This book doesn't though. The book was written by a reporter from a British music magazine (Q maybe?) and it reads at times as a long magazine article. It's very well written, and is multiple sources from past Wings band mates. It's not too tabloidy, and it is a pretty quick read. As a 30+ year Macca fan who treasures the 70's stuff, I really enjoyed this and learned a few things I did not know.

I am more a Lennon fan. But I appreciate that John was only part of the equation. I can't forgive Paul for some of his stupid songs and many more I can't get out of my head. He doesn't come off too well in this book. Can't pick or keep a band together. Give him credit for being a genius. I was tired of him by the time the book ends. I say it's worth the read.

Well-written chronicle of Paul's 1970s activities starting from around the time of The Beatles' breakup, through solo projects, from the first to the last Wings album, ending the decade with the death of John Lennon. I learned a few things I didn't know and enjoyed how the author, while clearly showing respect for Paul's talents and achievements, also highlighted some weaknesses - including a certain naivete that seemed to get Macca in trouble consistently. Clearly made me go back and listen to some Wings albums I had overlooked.

Based on several interviews the author did with McCartney, there's a good amount of substance here and not all conjecture. Definitely some things about Wings that I didn't know about that I learned from this book. Writing is pretty solid and kept my interest until the end. Very good for super fans. People only mildly interested in McCartney's life post Beatles in the 1970s may not find it that interesting.

Captures the essence of the Wings decade. It was interesting how it appeared so seamless to me at the time, yet those years were quite trying for McCartney. Nice insights into how difficult it was to emerge from the shadow of the Beatles and try to create a band that gels when there is only one superstar in the lineup.

A great look behind the scenes of the years between the break up of the Beatles and the breakup of Wings. Gives a great insight into the real Paul and shows how much he truly loved Linda. Points out all his flaws and yet leaves you adoring him even more when itâ€™s over.

With all due respect to the author, who is undoubtedly a master of what has now become a hobby to us old enough to remember the fascinating glow of a tube! The book IS a good technical explanation and provides some of the interesting back stories behind the development of the circuitry. BUT it is really in need of an overhaul and not just a reprint. It is obvious that the book was edited for and printed on old-style printing presses. The black and white pictures are placed in a separate area in the book so one has to continually flip back and forth to view the picture referenced in the text. The pictures are black and white and not of very good quality. Thankfully, the schematic drawings are displayed within the text that is explaining them. That's a plus. Look, I understand that this subject will never be a blockbuster for the masses and I am very happy that the author did the research and condensed it into a book for us youngsters in our 50's lol! I just think that to have any chance of getting the attention of the newest generations of engineers and turning them on to the simple beauty of these "ancient" designs, a major, modern, redo with clear, glossy pictures of each unique component would be great.

This book explains the circuit and and mechanical design elements of the common 1920 radio sets. For most of the 1920's, at least in the USA there were very few tube types available to the Radio Set designer and manufacturer. There was only the triode until the screen grid tube (tetrode) was developed and available in the late 1920's and these tubes had DC filaments. That meant that radio set designers were competing primarily with circuit techniques to establish their own niche and meet their customers need for radios that were reasonably easy to operate, could pull in distant stations, and were reliable.In this book the author explains the various radio techniques used in the 1920s in their historical context. This includes regeneration, TRF (Tuned Radio Frequency - the most popular approach for most of that era), neutralization, superhetrodynes, and reflex circuits. The author also describes the tuning capacitor designs, variable inductors, and the RF and then IF transformer design principles.I am an RF engineer with an interest in radios from this era when radios first started going into many homes. The explanations are sufficiently clear, I beleve; for a person with some minimal electronics background and interest to gain a better understanding and perspective on radio sets of the 1920's. It won't make you an engineer, but it will give you a better appreciation of the various types of radio sets from that era.The writing is very good, the schematic diagrams are clear, and there are photos of representative radio "guts" and the important components such as tuners, variometers, and RF coils and their layouts. My only disappointment was that the pictures were not as clear as might have been possible on glossy paper. But on the whole I was very pleased with this book.

This is one of the best books available on the development in the 1920's of radio broadcasting receivers. While a reader should have a basic knowledge of radio theory, the author's descriptions are clear and well organized. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the technical details of the radios of this era or is a collector of those radios. Fortunately this book has recently been reprinted and the reprint contains the complete text of the original.

Excellent book.Starting from the absolute basic tube radio, it progresses through the developments of the 1920's.Regeneration, Grid Leaks, Neutrodons,..., all the way up to AC powered circuits.It's all here in an easy to follow journey, with some of the politics behind the scenes.

A good book that captures the design details of early radios and evolution before the invention of the transistor.

I enjoy the book, it was very clear, how and what the development of 1920's Radios , how it effected future development. Yes, I recomend this book, to all, who collect old radios, also to those, who are interested in the history of radio.

I used to borrow my local library's copy, this is a fascinating book and I'd call it a must-have if you repair or restore really old (pre-superhet) radios. This would make a great gift for the Radio Amateur in your life, and is a fascinating history of early radio technology, without high level math required to understand it.

About the Author

Nicholas Reynolds has worked in the fields of modern military history and intelligence off and on for forty years, with some unusual detours. Freshly minted PhD from Oxford University in hand, he joined the United States Marine Corps in the 1970s, serving as an infantry officer and then as a historian. As a colonel in the reserves, he eventually became officer in charge of field history, deploying historians around the world to capture history as it was being made. When not on duty with the USMC, he served as a CIA officer at home and abroad, immersing himself in the very human business of espionage. Most recently, he was the historian for the CIA Museum, responsible for developing its strategic plan and helping to turn remarkable artifacts into compelling stories. He currently teaches as an adjunct professor for Johns Hopkins University and, with his wife, Becky, cares for rescue pugs.

Having loved Hemingway's work for decades, I opened this volume with trepidation, afraid of what I would find. What I discovered was intense work by a writer more concerned than I about being careful in his assertions, painstakingly documenting every wrenching word. What I also discovered was a compelling case that while Hemingway never produced spy work for the Soviets (big sigh of relief, at least for me), his signing on the line and engaging in creating a material passcode meant something that anyone who cares about the man and his work needs to know. It meant that, for at least a moment, he was quite serious in signing on with his colleagues from the Spanish Civil War---the Soviets. Since it was the thirties and forties when this temperament developed in Hemingway, this meant he was most likely primarily concerned in fighting the great evil force of the time, Fascist Germany, whom the Russians also hated. Had America and Britain joined forces against the the Fascist trio, Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini in Spain, it is much less likely Hem would have considered joining up in any way with the Soviets. But America did not officially help Spain, a grievous error in Hemingway's view, and the Soviets did. In that firestorm of early WWII, signing up with the Russians may have looked and apparently did look sensible to the author. But as time went on, the idea of betraying his nation did not please him and he did no actual spying for the early KGB--who actually (at Hemingway's behest) had his book of stamps for their operatives to prove to Hemingway that they were the right "connection." The book all makes sense. So does Reynolds' theory that the signing later haunted the Nobel prize winner and Bronze Star awardee, who had much to lose in the time of McCarthy had the full nature of his Soviet flirtation come to light during the McCarthy hearings or during the Rosenburg trial. Reynolds traces Hemingway through his crazy ride in the thirties up until his death, creating compelling evidence that this very big secret of Hemingway's may have heavily contributed to his paranoia, his secretivity, and in the end, his downhill slide to death. Just a great read. And I didn't mention the fascinating inlucsions of Gellhorn, the Chinese, the U-Boats. As we always knew, Hemingway was bigger than life. This impeccably researched volume shows him to be even more massive and considerably more complex than we realized, and possibly more his own man within his own strange code than we will ever fully understand.

First off, the life that Hemingway lived is a suspense novel in itself, and this biography does a good job at putting all the main events down on paper in an easily accessible way.Second, from the foreword to the end, the author spends a great deal of energy focusing on the spy angle. However, because he was unable to get access to sufficient sources (especially on the NKVD front), he opts to really stretch out what little he does know. This leads to some passages where you can read a over a page based on nothing but conjecture as to what actually happened (or if anything happened at all).

My first book on Hemingway... Pretty great. Lots of interesting info in here, seemingly a new take adding to his legacy. The author seems to have made a lot of edits to quotes and such to ensure readability, but assuming there's no intentional misrepresentation, builds a case that paints Hemingway in a new light, while appreciating nuance and stopping short of judgements. Recommended for world wars 1 and 2 history buffs, and those who romanticize the greatest generation. Also adds insight to the factions fighting these battles.

The factual narration of Hemingway's actions in the Spanish Civil War, Europe and Cuba during World War II, and China are very interesting. The speculative guesswork surrounding spying for the NKVD undercuts the entire book, however. Everything about the Russian connection is apparently based on a copy of a copy of some formerly declassified documents from Russia, which are no longer available. No specifics and the book is filled with "maybe they talked about...." "Perhaps they discussed...," "He may have been asked to...." The author talks about other Cold War era spy investigations and trials, and then implies Hemingway may have been involved in similar actions. Drivel. He should have left the spy theory out completely, or confined it to an aside, not tried to make it a main theme. At the end the author makes a statement that even Hemingway could not explain his complicated relationship with Russia. Well, neither does this book, if a substantive relationship even existed.

Hemingway is fascinating so books about him are likely to be interesting. Reynolds added incredible detail to Hemingway's relations with the Soviet Union that is very informative of the hidden world behind the headlines during Hemingway's lifetime.

I enjoyed the book. From what I know of Hemingway it seemed to be pretty well researched. His suicide should not have come as a surprise based on the books he wrote. Most of them dealt with loss and/or death.

Reynolds is obviously a big Hemingway fan (as am I), but he doesn't gush over him here. He writes a balanced account and he doesn't gloss over the man's shortcomings. Hemingway was a complex human being who was also a larger-than-life character. I find him endlessly fascinating and Reynolds adds much that is new to the inventory of information about him. Thoroughly researched and well writ. Moved along at a nice clip. Good book, this one. On a side note, this book provoked me to order Martha Gellhorn's "Travels with Myself and Another," a book I'd never gotten around to reading until now.

This is a wonderful book filled with bowling history and some really cool pictures too. This book was a wonderful buy!

Hooray for pop culture and cool photos!

My father-in-law, who is 81, is impossible to buy for at Christmas, absolutely loved it! He couldn't put it down on Christmas Day, and he even took it to the bowling alley to show all his friends! Great pictures, nostalgia, and bowling trivia! A perfect gift for the bowler in your family!

A pleasant enough short history of bowling, giving just enough detail to be interesting without getting too technical though in some cases I would have appreciated more information, in particular the development of the automatic pinsetter (surely the one item that pushed the sport into the big-time) and the architecture of bowling lanes, the work of the architectural company Powers, Daly & DeRosa helped pull in the customers to the flamboyant lanes of the fifties.The book is a neat square shape (seven by seven inches) and well produced with over a hundred pictures but before you order your copy you have to know that (amazingly) none of the pictures have captions! Some of them clearly are just graphics to help the design along but I counted fifty-two that really should have some explanation for the reader, for instance page eleven shows actor Telly Savalas just about to bowl, when was it taken and where? Page forty-seven shows the outside of the streamline Tower Bowl in San Diego (designed by Charlie Lee) I think readers should be told this in a caption, page ninety-six has a bowling championship in progress, where, when? I'm surprised that the publisher did not pick up this rather fundamental flaw in the books presentation.A book I enjoyed more than 'Bowled Over' is 'Bowl-O-Rama' by Thomas Steele, essentially a visual history with hundreds of pictures (all with captions) and short introductions to the nine chapters. Oh and the cover shows part of a bowling ball with three holes punched right though the stiff cardboard.

FIVE STARS HERE BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND LOVED IT WHEN I GAVE IT TO HIM FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT. HE HAS LIVED ALMOST HIS ENTIRE LIFE IN BOWLING ALLEYS, AND HE LOVES MEMORABILIA ! GREAT BOOK.

So I'd suggest consider this short overview of 10 businesses, and then narrow down to the one or two you'd like to start with. It could be quite profitable.

I was expecting more of this book. Yes, the author mentions 10 businesses but does not go deeper. If you are a beginner , like me, in the internet market , you will not be able to work with half of that businesses or to understand what the author is talking about without making extra search in the internet, in some cases. I felt the information was mostly vague.

Poorly written, just examples of what a few people tried.

I like the fact that this book is a book that gives you quick ideas as the title specifies "10 Businesses That People Can Start Online in 1 Day or Less." This book is straight and to the point, but packed with really good ideas. I like the way each chapter/section is structured. It was a very good read. I'm really excited about this book.

This is a nice Kindle reading material.

This was a good overview of some of the money making methods online. I was familiar with all of them, however I did get some valuable insights into what the expectations should be with each method. It explained why I may be failing in some of my methods and gave me direction to change some of the things I am currently doing. There was also some great information about providing social media and internet research services for businesses. I would be interested in taking some of the courses that these guys offer if they provide detailed training on how to accomplish some of these ideas.

News coverage of our record-breaking snowfall of 2015 mentioned the Blizzard of 1888 with its nearly 60", which is how I came to read this excellent book. Author Jim Murphy focuses on New York City â€“ not Boston - in his â€œriveting story of a region brought to its knees by the three days and nights of hurricane-force winds and unrelenting snow.â€ Still, the â€œSnowpocalyse" of 127 years ago is a gripping read in the hands of this master storyteller who also wrote â€œThe Great Fire.â€Like in his other works, Murphy is generous with his illustrations - many of the drawings and photographs are from the authorâ€™s personal collection indicating his level of interest in his subject. The weather maps also help explain how the storm developed so quickly and covered such a wide area extending from the Carolinas all the way up the coast to Maine. At only 124 pages, Murphyâ€™s story moves as fast as the storm did. His writing gift is to put you in the moment through his narration, his graphics, and his telling little details (Mark Twain got stranded at a NYC hotel). Seriously, I was shivering as I read some passages. I highly recommend this book to weather buffs and history aficionados.

It's a good book - don't get me wrong - I liked it - but it's not as "in depth" as some of the stuff I've read on this subject in the past - in fact, it's been a long time since I've noted anything on the subject. Just goes to show no matter how man's technology seem to be making life easier on planet Earth - Mother Nature can still throw us a curve ball. The thing that really bothered me though was how man treated horses in those days - good thing the SPCA didn't exist or some people would have their butts in jail.

This is a very readable non fiction book about the East Coast blizzard of 1888.. Lots of detail and engaging text and illustrations. My fifth graders loved this book and were inspired to do some primary research about the period on line., It meets the high standard of his other books for kids. Lots of information about the history of weather forecasting, it also includes a hefty amount of 19th century social history (post-Civil War). While I used it in science class, it would stand on its own for a reading group. He also replied to a letter we sent him.

This was listed as a children's book at my library, but adults will enjoy it just as much. I recommend the audio version if you like audios. The reader was very good and it was as suspenseful as any movie I have seen. This would be a great audio to download and listen to during a power outage with the family.

Had to read for a summer project. Very interesting. My daughter loves anything dealing with the 1600 - 1800's.

This was a good overview of the Blizzard of 1888, not only the conditions at the time but how it changed both attitudes and the future of the country. It was very well written and easy to read giving many personal accounts as well as showing the "official" accounts of the storm and the havoc it created over two days that in some cases caused impact over weeks and months.

This is non-fiction at its best. The engrossing account of this monster-blizzard is more amazing than any fiction story.

Itâ€™s a decent book however the author of the book is an extremely closed minded. He seems to have the inability to accept new data as it comes in and change his opinions. This is obviously because he has a book out and would not want to contradict anything he has put to print. His YouTube channel provides good data from the panel of doctors but he talks negatively about other doctors in the field that he doesnâ€™t agree with. If you post a comment or question that he doesnâ€™t like he bans you from the channel. Even if the comment or question is written in the most polite and respectful manner. So I personally canâ€™t respect his opinions if he has the lack of interest in an open discussion that could possibly make his books information less valuable. The topic of TRT is constantly evolving and new information is coming in all the time. He most recently banned Dr. John Crisler because of his opinion on estrogen. Dr. Crisler is the most known doctor on the planet regarding TRT and he admits himself heâ€™s still learning and adapting to the understanding of TRT as new data comes in, unlike the author of this book. Overall I feel like the book has decent information but Iâ€™ve read many other books regarding TRT and I just prefer getting the information from an actual doctor who has patients and specializes in TRT and does this everyday, Not just looking to sell a book.

This book opened my eyes to something that I personally had reservations about. Totally shifted my perspective in more ways than one. This book is filled with so much important information even if you donâ€™t need therapy at the moment you will know what to do and what to watch out for and how to go about doing it in a clear and informed way. I havenâ€™t encountered a doctor who could explain and make this info so accessible. I wish I had been exposed to this info a long time ago. Would have adjusted certain lifestyle factors so much earlier. It kills me when someone release a self help book bible and they basically just use it as an advertisement for you to buy more things or if you just buy this other book you will get answers. This book is 110 percent opposite. So full of content and useful facts and research. I will say it again. This is a paradigm shifting book. To top off the icing on the cake is itâ€™s easy to read and well written. I felt like I was hanging out with my best no bs friend and gettin my ey Head blown off with the goods. . Buy it. you wonâ€™t be sorry. I believe this book will finally crack the weird misconceptions in the public sphere for men reclaiming their own health. You guys are hands down doing something extrodinary for humans.

Francis Coppola is one of great cinematic creators at work not only today but for the past fifty years. Live Cinema, his latest innovation, is clearly and interestingly laid out in this well written book. Coppola shares the context of his idea, what differentiates it from other modes of expression, as well as his first experiments with his ideas in action. Like Marshall McLuhan, Coppola believes in the power of the probe. If you are even remotely interested in innovation in cinema you must read this book.

PRETENDS IT'S SOMETHING IT'S NOT -- VERY LITTLE ABOUT NEW CINEMA. SAVE YOUR MONEY

This book is a wonderful look behind the scenes of the filmmaking industry. Equal parts art, business, and psychology, Francis Ford Coppola takes us on a wild and creative ride as he embarks on an ambitious search to invent a new film-television-theater hybrid. I was fortunate enough to have been cast as an actor (Vincenzo) in the first Live Cinema workshop filmed in Oklahoma City and documented meticulously throughout the book. The finished product, Distant Vision, was broadcast via satellite to Los Angeles, New York, and Paris on June 5, 2015. The book includes a tremendous amount of detail on this creative process. Mr. Coppola did an exceptional job juggling multiple responsibilities on set, and it's nice that much of the work and development process is captured here for posterity â€“ and for other filmmakers who may want to pick up the baton. The theater training exercises Mr. Coppola used in rehearsals for the live film shoot were very effective, and he documents them here, as well, in the appendices. Considering his stature and position in the film industry, it's remarkable that Mr. Coppola would tackle a creative project this complex â€“ and even finance the entire venture himself. This book goes into extensive detail â€“ both personal and professional â€“ on his journey to create this new medium, with so many different moving parts. It would make an excellent supplementary text for film studies classes in colleges and universities.Very detailed throughout and highly recommended.

I studied under Hallmark Hall of Fame producer-director George Schaefer at UCLA, did a TV directing internship under Hallmark's Glenn Jordan, and learned 3-camera TV with Ivan Cury at UCLA, saw The Comedian on a Golden Age of Television DVD set, so can say with confidence that Francis Ford Coppola is on to something, once again ahead of his time, as he was with Video Assist (well, he did get it from Jerry Lewis)...Live TV has shown its potential with Metropolitan Opera HD broadcasts and other special events, and Francis Ford Coppola combines this experience with his own memories of growing up watching live television drama in the 1950s, plus his movie-making genius, to posit a future for theatrical "Live Cinema." Which he wants to make...with a kitchen-sink melodrama about his family in the Bronx (homage to Marty?). Ohmigod, I love this book. Confession: I read cookbooks like they're novels. I literally cozy up with them in bed and fantasize about the food. And this one is particularly wonderful, including gorgeous, drool-inducing photos of exotic foods along with the recipes, as well as the inspiring stories of the women who created them.The recipes are vegetarian and kosher, with ingredients that are fairly easy to find in most supermarkets. In addition to being beautiful, the layout of this cookbook is incredibly thoughtful, making it easy to use. The cooking terms and unfamiliar ingredients are defined and explained, taking all the fear out of cooking something unfamiliar.I haven't gotten around to reading all the stories yet, because I'm usually distracted by the yummy-looking dishes. I can't wait to try making naan, a ridiculously delicious Indian flatbread, and the cookbook makes it seem so easy.If you are a fan of Indian cooking, but have been too intimidated to try making it yourself, I recommend you buy this book!

The 3 books I tell everyone to read are:1. The hard thing about hard things, by Ben Horowitz2. High output management, by Andy Grove (this book)3. The life changing magic of tidying up, by Marie Kondo (yes, I know it's not a business or strategy book, but I consider it a philosophy book)If you don't read a lot of management or business strategy books, I'd recommend you start with The Hard Things, as Horowitz has a lighter voice, and his book is funnier and an easier read. In Hard Things, Horowitz geeks out about his mentors / role models, including Andy Grove. If you like Hard Things and want to take the master class, you should definitely read this book. Grove is amazingly insightful, and his philosophy is inspiring.

I got this book because it was recommended by Ben Horowitz in The Hard Thing About Hard Things, another solid management book.This book (High Output Management) dates from 1983 and it shows in the tone and subject matter. The book predates widespread email and talks a lot about manufacturing. However, these are not shortcomings. In fact, it is great that the author is not distracted by things like agile, lean, kanban, etc modern marvels. He makes an analogy between a fast food restaurant and other processes, including knowledge work and HR, and the analogy holds up. Of course, he also gives examples from his work at Intel.Key highlights:- what are high leverage activities and how to focus on them- how many direct reports are optimal- different types of meetings and how to run them, including 1:1s- task relevant maturity (TRM) of employees and how to manage them accordingly- how to give performance feedback- compensation and promotions- why and how you should invest in training programs- how to try to keep an employee who is quittingEverything is meat and potatoes of people and process management, and to the point. As I was reading this book, much of it resonated with my own experience, and at other times I was amazed at insights that showed me how Andy Grove truly was a top manager, after starting as a researcher and engineer.I wish I had a mentor or manager as wise as Andy Grove.Highly recommended.

This is not a review, rather some thoughts that occurred to me while reading the book. As manager of a small team I found the book to be full of very practical advice. In particular, the Part 4 - The Players contains very useful processes which are immediately applicable to my daily activities as a manager. Grove's main accomplishment in this book, is the simplification of very complex organizational concepts and processes into simple steps that anyone can follow and manage. Grove is clearly a decisive individual, this also emerges clearly from the text. He lays out a dilemma, lists the pros and cons and then makes a decision, for better or worse. The book is also a very frank account of the ups and downs of management, the author shares his mistakes and moments when his judgement was not accurate. You get the feeling, that he wrote the book, had it proof read and published, and was not at all concerned with the politics or how he would be perceived. Grove's dedication to Intel and its employees is also abundantly clear, it must have been a real privilege to work with a manager to that caliber.

High Output Management provides a comprehensive overview of a managers role and purpose. The book focuses around a central thesis that a manager's objective is to increase the output of the work of those below and around him. A manager should therefore choose high-leverage activities that have a multiplicative impact on the overall output of his subordinates and peers.
