Happily Married or Married Happily?

Here's something I read recently that reinforces what I believe in, a constant theme of this blog - only you can make you happy.

Over the past three decades, psychologists have conducted research to find the factors that determine happiness. After tracking people over many years, they discovered that lots of happy people were in long-term relationships.

Therefore, they concluded, long-term relationships make you happy. Indeed, some of the researchers even went so far as to say that marriage makes you happy. However, as the years went by and they analysed more data, they discovered that this wasn’t quite correct.

It wasn’t being in a long-term relationship, or being married, that made you happy. In fact, people who were happy attracted long-term relationships into their life. So it was not relationships that were making them happy — it was that happy people were making long-lasting relationships.

This finding was reinforced by a major study which ran over 16 years and showed that people who were happiest in their relationships were also happy before they’d even met their partners.

The consequence of all this research is very clear: being happy with yourself is the best preparation for a happy long-term relationship.

I'm so glad I decided to be happy a few years ago - a long term relationship followed pretty soon. Last month we completed four years of being married happily! :)

I or Me

English grammar has never been my favorite subject. Even today I am not very clear on the use of “I” or “me” in a sentence. I understand that "I" and "me" are both pronouns that we use to refer to ourselves. As Dr. Goodword puts it - occasionally we drive a long way down the wrong road, knowing we have made the bad turn, but press on, hoping we will somehow end up in the right place. That is what happened to me.

During a casual conversation with my friend, I happened to mention to him - “I and my brother take turns to look after my aged mother”. He corrected my English usage and told me that one should always mention the other person(s) first. I guess that this usage must have come out the logic of being polite and also respecting the other person. Due to this strong logical reasoning, I never repeated my mistake.

But let us look at some rule based grammar. The correct usage is - “It is I”, “That's he”, and “It's she", but sounds rather funny to me as we generally say - “It is me”, “That's him” and “It's her”.

I won a bet with one of my family members regarding the plural of fish. He said it is fishes and I maintained that it was fish. When we looked up the dictionary, we got the explanation - Fish is both singular and plural within a species. Fishes is the plural when you have more than one species.

I feel that the above rule based grammar will die soon.

For some strange reason, I took a liking for “Transferred epithets”. In a transferred epithet (also known as hypallage) the adjective or adverb is transferred from the noun it logically belongs with, to another one which fits it grammatically but not logically. The above explanation of is rather confusing.

But our English teacher taught us the meaning through two examples in prose and poetry. I cannot forget it till date.

"The plowman homeward plods his weary way, / And leaves the world to darkness and to me" (Grey, "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard"). The weariness of the farmer is transferred to the way.

The other example was through an essay of Charles Lamb – Dream Children: A Reverie. The author is a confirmed bachelor. Yet he dreams that he has a family and children. He suddenly wakes up and this is how the essay ends: " ------ and immediately awaking, I found myself quietly seated in my bachelor arm-chair, where I had fallen asleep, with the faithful Bridget unchanged by my side -- but John L. (or James Elia) was gone for ever”. The bachelor status of John L got transferred to the chair in which he was sitting.

Later popular authors like Wodehouse used TE liberally in his novels.

“As I sat in the bath tub, soaping a meditative foot and singing, ….." (P.G. Wodehouse, Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit,)

“I balanced a thoughtful lump of sugar on the teaspoon” (P.G. Wodehouse, Joy in the morning)

Finally you may ask me “What is the most often used transferred epithet in our daily lives?”

Some people say that acne is a normal part of life, but does it really have to be so? Fortunately, there are some measures you can take to prevent pimples from ever showing up in your face.

Where Do Pimples Come From?

Pimples typically arise from dirt and oil getting trapped in your pores. They can also be triggered by allergies and hormones, but dirt buildup is usually the cause.

Know Your Skin

Acne can stem from genetics, your diet, hormones, allergies, certain habits, medication and your environment, among other things. If you have observed your family members to be prone to acne outbreaks at whatever age, there’s a possibility that you will be susceptible to acne yourself.

Check your skin type if it is oily, dry or a combination of both. Identifying your skin type will help you find a way to treat and prevent acne. Here’s a quick look how:

    * Oily residue: You have a combination of dry and oily skin

    * Flaky skin or residue: You have dry skin

Clean Your Skin

Finding the right skin cleanser for your skin type is very important in preventing acne. It must not be too harsh as to strip your face’s natural oil and cause irritation on your skin. However, skin cleansers that are too gentle might not be enough for you to effectively fight against acne.

Finding the right cleanser is generally a trial and error process. The best way is usually to purchase sampler packs of different brands of skin cleanser. Some people even use normal bath soap for their skin, but of course, it still depends on what your skin will respond the best with.

Washing your face twice a day is enough to keep your skin clean. Wash your face before putting on any make-up or facial treatment in the morning, and wash off your face again in the evening before going to sleep. Moisturize

Some people think that the natural oil on your face causes pimples and acne, but they are not completely right. It is the buildup of oil that causes trouble, not the oil itself.

Having dry skin, or washing your face too often can be detrimental because these causes the skin to produce too much oil. The oil then will cause a buildup that in turn causes acne. That’s why it’s very important that we apply moisturizer after washing our face, because this will help retain the moisture and not cause the skin to produce oil on overdrive. Find a moisturizer brand that will be gentle on your skin.

Keeping away from the sun will also prevent dry skin and acne. If you cannot avoid sun exposure, wear a facial moisturizer with SPF protection and a hat!

Eat Right, Keep Hydrated

Avoid eating oily food and junk food. Food allergies are a cause of acne, so try to avoid them. A proper diet with lots of fruits and vegetables will make your skin healthier, and healthy skin means acne-free skin.

Drinking plenty of water, at least two liters a day, will keep skin healthy by helping you produce sweat. Drinking water will encourage you to flush out impurities, discouraging these impurities to stick around and wreak havoc on your skin.

Don’t Stress

Stress translates into physical forms in many ways, and that includes acne. Stop worrying, and snap out of that depression. Getting enough sleep, exercising, eating healthy food, and taking a break now and then will greatly help with preventing acne.

Facial Treatment

While washing your face regularly does a tremendous job in preventing pimples, you will have to do something more every now and then. Getting professional facial treatments is one thing, but at home, you can simply use a facial scrub and a facial mask. Use each only once a week, and not on the same day! The reason is that using these too often can strip your skin of its natural oil and cause irritation.

Few days back I'm finding the same problem. Many mails and I'm unable to unsubscribe also. After lot of research I found that.. and the big joke is its right above in the gmail.

What is a book?

The objects we think of as books have been made of diverse materials throughout history. Cultures around the world have recorded information using available natural materials and technologies. Before paper, writing was chiseled on stone or clay tablets. The invention of paper in Han Dynasty China around 105 A.D. allowed writing to become portable. The Chinese developed a thin yet strong paper for writing and arranged the paper in accordion folded books, hand scrolls, or sewn bindings. As paper and bookmaking moved east to Japan, south through India, and west to the Middle East with the trade routes, new forms and structures emerged according to cultural and religious needs.

Codex, or multi-section book

The first example of the codex, or a book made of sheets gathered together like a modern book, was in the 1st century A.D. During this period in northern Africa, books were made of sheets of parchment or papyrus, and "bound" together with rings. Later books were given covers and actually sewn together. Throughout Europe, parchment was considered a superior material for writing, and monasteries produced beautiful vellum or parchment books and illustrations for religious texts. Paper wasn't made in Europe until the 12th century, eleven hundred years after its invention in China, when the first paper mills began operation in Spain and Italy. Eventually, paper gained acceptance with scribes and bookbinders and its popularity soared by the development of movable type printing in the late 15th century. These early European papers were far superior to the papers of today, because they were made from cotton rags or linen, which are pure sources of cellulose. With the advent of machine made paper in the early 19th century, and the use of ground wood pulp instead of cotton and linen by the 1850's, paper quality declined radically.

But, ground wood pulp as a papermaking material did allow paper to be made cheaply and quickly. By the mid-19th century, common people could own books, read newspapers and serialized novels and stories. Unfortunately, these "advances" in technology led to a decline in paper quality. Ground wood pulp contains a complex acid called lignin, which is essentially self-destructive, causing paper to become brown and brittle with time. It is safe to say that almost any book printed after the 1850's is made of a ground wood pulp paper, unless it was from a fine press or it specifies the paper as acid-free. (also permanent durable).

The First Step: Triage

Just like the casualties of war, books need to be sorted into categories for their preservation. Some books are more valuable than others, and "value" can be a very subjective term. In the book world, there are rare books, a designation that refers to books that are old or financially valuable, to books which are finely printed and bound, or to books which have been owned by famous people. Librarians, curators, and collectors develop categories for rare books, or special collections.

In your home, you might have books which are "special", and books which are "ordinary". In the special category might be an oversized art book, a favorite novel or book of poems, a family Bible, or a scrapbook of mementos or photographs. In addition, you might also have old yearbooks, textbooks from school or college, books of literature, books about a profession or trade. These are groups of books which are not looked at very often, but remain important reference tools. Books like paperbacks would constitute the "ordinary" category, books which might have once been enjoyed, but are easily replaced.

The first thing you need to do to take proper care of your book collection is ask a series of questions: how many books do you have? which books are most valuable? do you need to keep all the books in your collection? are there any books which could be given to schools or libraries?

Once you prioritize the items in your collection, the job of preservation is simplified. The enemies of books--insects, mold, and damage from light--do not discriminate between expensive books and cheap paperbacks. This article will outline suggested steps for preventive preservation, explaining specific ways to create a better environment for your collection.

Enemies of Books: Temperature and Humidity

Books are made of organic materials, paper and board made from pulp, cloth made from natural fibers, leathers from tanned animal skins. All organic materials begin to deteriorate in reaction to the environment. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause these materials to expand and contract, which in turn can cause books to warp and buckle, crack and fall apart. While temperature and humidity affect paper, cloth, and leather differently, fluctuations in temperature and humidity do even more damage on books because they are composite objects. All the parts are joined together to make an operating, three dimensional object, with folds and hinges.

Books are hygroscopic, meaning that they readily absorb and release moisture. The amount of moisture in the air can be measured as relative humidity (referring to the water vapor in the air relative to the greatest amount of water vapor the air could hold at the same temperature). Relative humidity is expressed in percentages, and in Hawai'i's humid environment, the relative humidity averages between 60% and 75%. High humidity causes mold growth, and increased insect activity. Moreover, daily and seasonal fluctuations in humidity are extremely damaging to books.

Temperature is also an important consideration. The higher the temperature, the faster the book will deteriorate, as the rate of chemical reactions is doubled with each increase in temperature of 18 degrees F. Hawai'i's temperature averages from 60 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, books and paper objects are self-destructing in the high heat, which, combined with high humidity, leaves books extremely vulnerable.

Recommendations:

The good news is that there is something you can do to slow down the deterioration. You can lower the temperature, or at least attempt to stabilize the fluctuations through air conditioning, and lower the relative humidity by using a dehumidifier. Stability is the key ingredient: libraries and museums recommend the ideal temperature of 70 degrees F and a relative humidity of 50-55% for the storage of valuable collections. These ideal conditions can be difficult to maintain throughout the house, so think micro-environments. Some people have one room which they seal off and air condition and/or de-humidify. In this room, they store all of their books, photographs, leather, and other materials that are sensitive to high humidity. You can also make airtight storage containers out of large Tupperware locking tubs, or another inert material (not wood, for reasons which will be explained under the Storage section), and line the container with silica desicant. Place the silica packets or loose silica gel in the bottom of the airtight container, then build a ragboard "shelf" to separate the items from the desicant. When the desicant has absorbed a significant amount of moisture it will change color. Then you can dry it out in your oven and reuse it. Obviously, this will not work for an entire collection of books, but will be better than nothing for your most valuable treasures. Photographs, slides, and other photographic materials are extremely sensitive to high humidity, and also respond well to controlled micro-environments.

Choose Your Path Carefully

There are so many options and choices when you decide that you want to try and make some money online. I actually think that the vast majority of people that try and fail, have failed not because the Internet is too crowded with other people making money or that the path they choose was not viable.
I think that those that fail do so because they are overwhelmed and inconsistent. I know that I have been, and I am not actually making any money yet. I am not ready to call it failure yet.

Online Store

I have tried to setup an online store selling anything available from drop shippers. I got as far as setting up a website and getting it configured to sell products.
Once I started investigated the “what” to sell I realized that a LOT of people were selling the same exact things. Everyone was using the same exact photos and advertising copy. They were all completing on price just trying to make a few dollars on each transaction.
I realized quickly that this would not be good for me. I like my day job, I want something that can run without constant attention.

Copywriting

The next thing that REALLY caught my attention and I believe that I will do someday is writing copy for other people’s websites and advertising campaign’s. This is a real and very viable approach to making some money. I would highly recommend this as a path of consideration.
I purchased and studied the Copywriting course by American Writers & Artists Inc, AWAI. The course is very good and I feel that it was worth the price, although it is $500.00.

About this time I came to learn that professional Bloggers can make a lot of money from other people advertising on their site. All they need to do is start a blog, make it interesting and create a huge following and readership.

Informational Products

Looking for copywriting jobs helped me realize that the guys making the serious money (like Millions a year) were launching their own informational products and books. So, I reasoned that I should create my own informational offering and sell it instead of selling someone else’s.

What I then came to understand is that even if you put in the MASSIVE amount of time required to create your own online product. The art is not in creating the product but the Online Marketing that brings in the money, finding the “who” to sell it too.

As for marketing, there is a whole network of marketers out there that will help you sell your product for a commission called Affiliate Marketers. Some these guys are making a ton of money and they don’t even create their own products. They are selling other people’s products for a fee. But in order to do this successfully you have to understand a lot about Traffic generation, SEO, Link Juice, Backlinks, Google Slaps, and the list goes on forever.

Conclusion

So here I have come full circle back to a path that is selling other people’s stuff for a piece of the sale. I am a long way down the road and yet no closer to making any money online. There is a mind boggling amount of stuff to learn. So, I would recommend understanding each of the available business models and selecting one at a time. There is nothing wrong with planning for growth from one thing to another, but I think that you (and hopefully I) will have a better chance of success picking a path and REALLY learning it and getting it to pay before moving on.

Everyone is all a buzz about Twitter and Social Media. That is great, but what the heck does in mean and how can I use to to help drive real traffic to my website?
It is no secret that the most key ingredient to success in any marketing campaign is the exposure of the advertisement. The more people that see your ad or read what you have to say the higher your probability of success.
It is no different online. You don’t have to be a master affiliate marketer to understand the value of traffic. Ok, if Twitter is so great, then I should use Twitter. I want to explore anything that is a real tool to help me build my business.
Why is Twitter so Great?
Twitter appears at first to be a kid’s toy. It gives the impression that all it is good for is announcing to the world the most boring details of your life, and there are certainly a lot of people using Twitter that way. But there is another way to look at it. I find the service to be like a rolling ticker tape of news and conversation among a group of people that are the exact target group of who I want to sell to.
The key to success with Twitter is to Follow the right people, and conversely to have the right people follow you. The great part is that all of the traffic and targeting is free.
You can search for a topic of interest and find people talking about it. When you see that someone made an interesting comment, you should choose to follow them. The next time you look at your home page you will see any comment from this person.
Once you have followed a bunch of people your news reel will start to roll with comments and conversations. You can look at the followers of your followers and add them as well.
You can and should just jump into the dialog. Don’t worry if nobody answers you. Conversations do not always take off.
The nature of Twitter is that when you follow people they see that you are following and some will follow you back. Many people use software tools to help them “follow back.”
I can hear the “so what” thoughts at this point. The best thing that you can do to see the value in this is to get out there and try it.
So what this means is that you can build a network or group of individuals that are interested and talking about the same thing that you are interested in or selling or in this case blogging about.
You can then post your own snippets of wisdom, tweets. There is no rule about what you can tweet about. But if you are just sending out links to your site or sales pitches without saying anything interesting you will be “un-followed” en mass.
The advice that I have seen says that about 20% of your tweets can be self serving, ie links to your blog or products. This number will probably not chase your followers away.
Most tweets I add directly into the Twitter interface, but I have recently installed an awesome WordPress Plugin that will automatically send my new blog posts out as tweets.
I installed Shorten2Ping, which automatically sends my blog title and link to Ping.fm and this service posts the information to Twitter for me as a Tweet.

How to Make Firefox Faster???

If you use broadband, you can make webpages load even faster in Firefox by using this "pipelining" trick. Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which can speed up page loading.

Follow these Steps:

Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Look for “network.http.keep-alive”. If it’s false, double-click that line and to change it to true.
Make sure “network.http.version” is set to “1.1″.
Look for “network.http.pipelining”. If it’s false, double-click that line and change it to true.
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to true by double-clicking it.
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 8 by double-clicking it. This means it will make 8 requests at once. There is no point setting it higher then 8 as it is capped at 8 max. The default value for this setting is 4.
Optional: Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it shows you the information it receives. This is particularly helpful on pages with search bars, however, it doesn't actually make the page load faster.

Other Methods For Broadband Users:

This week I was thinking that my blog address is not good, And I was thinking to make something interesting and that gives good search results. So I have started research on the blogger options.

Then I found many interesting things from Blogger.

Here are some precautions and to consider when renaming a blog that has been built on the Blogger platform:

Backup Your Blog Before You Start.As a precaution, backup your blog including blog template.

Change Only The Title. When logged into Blogger, on the Dashboard click Settings and then click the Basic tab. In the Title field enter the new title and then click Save Settings at the bottom. This will not change the web address but only the display title in the masthead of your blog.
You Can Change The Address. Many think it is impossible to change the blogspot.com address but it is easy to do. Click Settings and then click the Publishing tab. In the Blog*Spot Address field enter the new address and then check for availability.
Transfer Your Feed. Once you change the address, you would assume that you'd need to burn a new feed, right? And you'd assume that new subscribers would not have access to the posts under the old address, right? Well if you used FeedBurner to burn your feed, there is a way to change the feed for your new address. In FeedBurner, click the name of the feed and then the Edit Feed Details screen appears. Change the information in the Feed Title and Original Feed fields to match your new title and/or address.
Inform Your Readers. With any change to your blog - be it template, font, or title - create a post to let your users know of the changes and how it may impact the way in which they access your blog posts.

What Is Impacted When I Change My Blog's Title? Not much really and this change has the least impact on your readers. Readers who have bookmarked your site will still be able to read your blog, and all links that others have made to your blog will still work.

What Is Impacted When I Change My Blog's Address? Realize that any bookmarks or favorites your readers have saved may no longer work. In addition, if you've used social bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, those links may also be inoperable. And if other bloggers have linked to your posts, those links may no longer work. From here you will find a menu of seven different IM programs to choose from, six different e-mail programs, and four different social networking sites. When selected, each simply asks for your log-in and password and connects to the system. Your various programs are displayed, with IM buddy icons separate from e-mail and social networking e-mails.

How To Save Facebook Chat History

When you’re trying to remember the exact course of a conversation, to retrieve a lost web address, or just want to reminiscence tales of a past long gone, your chat logs can help you out big time.

Taking note of conversations may sound unnecessary, or even plain paranoid, but often proves to be extremely useful. Recalling those conversations word by word is one heck of a superpower.

One thing I’ve always missed about Facebook is that ability to keep logs of your Facebook chat history. As it is, Facebook only remembers short snippets of some most recent conversations – and only per page and in between sign-offs. Because the user has to be online, this can only ever be used to continue some previous conversations where you left off.

Below is an alternative method to permanently save your Facebook chat history, using browser extensions.

Using A Firefox Add-On Or Google Chrome Extension

Before we head off, let’s dispel a common misconception that has already earned these extensions some bad ratings. This technique does not allow you to delve into long lost conversations, prior to the usage of these extensions. Why not? Simple; because Facebook does not keep those around. So unless you can find yourself a time machine, there’s no way to recover those.

From the moment you’re set up however, these extensions will remember every single word said. And those can be retrieved later on.

Start out by downloading and installing Facebook Chat History Manager as a Firefox add-on or Google Chrome extension. There’s still a little work ahead before they’re running smoothly, though.

On Google Chrome, go to Window -> Extensions -> [FbCHM] Options, as can be seen in the screenshot above. You’re now in the extension’s Options pane. On the left, select ‘Get Facebook ID‘.

On Firefox, go to Tools -> Facebook Chat History Manager -> Get Facebook ID.

After logging into your account and authorizing the Facebook application, you’ll be able to view your Facebook ID. This is a number unique to your Facebook account. Copy it to your clipboard; you’ll need it in the next step.

On Google Chrome, go to Window -> Extensions -> [FbCHM] Options -> Create Account.

On Firefox, go to Tools -> Facebook Chat History Manager -> Create Account.

Use the previously obtained Facebook ID to create your account. The passwords here do not have to match your Facebook log-in password. It’s solely to keep your chat logs safe. Because you’ll have to log in later on, and again whenever you want to browse your chat history, an easy to remember login name can speed this up. This is optional though.

After creating your account, the set-up process is complete. The browser extensions will quietly keep track of your Facebook chat history, and allow to access it later on.

The Google Chrome extension will place an icon on your address bar, as can be seen in the screenshot above. Clicking it will prompt you for your username and password, before sending you off to your chat logs.

On Firefox, simply go to Tools -> Facebook Chat History Manager ->View History. Here too, you’ll need to enter your account details.

The Facebook chat history viewer isn’t very pretty, but does what it’s meant to do. On the top bar, you can select a period; on the left, a friend. To view older conversations, select ‘previous‘, or use an input field to jump to a specific page.

When you think about it, this is really going against the grain. But if turn of events are taking software to the ‘clouds’ a.k.a cloud computing, this shouldn’t be beyond reason (or reach).

So prepare to be surprised by Scrapboy, a desktop client for some of the popular social networks like Facebook, Orkut, and MySpace.

Common sense says that ’social networking’ is synonymous with the web. But a little jiggling of the senses and a desktop app does have a certain appeal.

The first benefit that comes to mind is that Scrapboy helps to provide a common interface to handle multiple sites. No more logging in individually.

I downloaded and configured Scrapboy for my Facebook and Orkut accounts (I don’t have a presence in MySpace). I then dug in and took a closer look at whether Scrapboy is worth a shout.

Logging into Facebook

I must say I really liked the interface – clean cut and cute. The log-in is straight through with the respective social accounts. For instance, as soon as I logged into my Facebook account, the social network asked for my permission to let Scrapboy access my data. With a yes, a small floating slideshow featured the profile pics of my circle of friends.

From the Scrapboy chat box, you can see your wall posts, check your inbox, view your pokes, events and check out your groups. Checking the inbox and your groups though involves logging into Facebook through the browser.

Now I could use this single window to access my circle of friends simultaneously. Chatting with Jane, spying on John’s wall posts and looking at Jim’s tagged photos – all at the same time!

Scrapboy not only transforms social networking into a chat box-like environment, but also takes it a bit further…

Instant notifications when friends sign-in or when they send a message or receive news.

Go offline into a stealth state.

Use Facebook emoticons to add ‘emotion’ to your messages.

See what you were gabbing about with saved history.

Logging into Google Orkut…

Scrapboy’s other face is its sync with Google Orkut. The interface shows your own and your friends’ scraps. The interface allows you to format and post your scraps, although it does not allow you to delete any offending scraps you might receive or send. Through the interface you can subscribe to the friend updates you want thus filtering the alerts you receive. You can also view your pals – by who is online, who visited you recently or who has an upcoming birthday, etc. Scrapboy allows you to open multiple windows for your friends and view their scraps and photos at the same time.

Scrapboy has its own take on privacy (or lack of it for your friends). You get notified whenever someone deletes a scrap or a photo…and more, you can see it too.

Let’s say you are creating a CSS file for a modular bit of a webpage. Perhaps you are the type that separates your CSS files into bits like header.css, sidebar.css, footer.css, etc. I just ran across an idea I thought was rather clever where you include the basic markup you will be styling as a comment at the top of your CSS file. For example, a sidebar.css file might look like:

This could be useful for yourself as you would have to do less flipping back and forth between where you are viewing markup and this CSS file. This is even more useful when:

The markup is generated by JavaScript and harder to see anywhere else or,
The CSS is specific to a plugin or third-party add-on
