As a person who has been navigating the system,I can tell you it is not designed for success. Albeit there are a number of non profit agencies out there that are designed to help you back to your feet, most are just designed to take in clients and actually do not have funding. I am sure the drop out rate is high because its difficult to stay on track with so many bureaucratic hoops to jump. its just plain exhausting. I feel there are too many non profit agencies and not enough direct support and because of this homeless and needy families are counted several times via non profit orientation therefore allowing them to receive more grants from the federal government . These grants are meant to support the families needing help not to support the non profit agency. It would be great if there were like two agencies or even three. but my support came from four different places. One for housing , one for food, one for cash aid, one for job assistance and retraining. Also I am Vet so there are several agencies who can also help and if you do not apply to all of them you will surely miss something. A few years ago I needed help. I had two young adults that I was responsible for and I had had cancer and lost my job. Right away , I signed up for section 8 assistance but at that time there was a 8 year wait. Ten years later almost, is when I found my family and I homeless again. I went to several agencies for help , each had me sit through a presentation and told me how they could help. each wanted all of my personal documents and private information. START WITH calling 211, they will enter your name into the big database and inform you of who to call next. IF you are homeless- St Vincent De Paul has a great program for both veterans and non veterans. they have beds available but you have to get there early to claim your bed. otherwise they lock the doors at a certain time and your on the street for the night. Next go to https://www.mybenefitscalwin.org/ to get your food assistance started and medical, If you haven't been receiving child support ask for cash aide. I took and it worked out fine but I also had my Veteran status to get me through the system a bit faster. 2 weeks how did that help? Well I had a car. I Ubered, and made 2 thousand dollars in two weeks then I was able to find three more apps that helped me find work. Ubering is great for milk money but awful on your only source of transportation , so be aware of that. None of what you are going through is easy. and friends will back away from you because your probably in distress all the time but DO NOT GIVE UP! in time your life can be back to normal its just a natter of looking at the open doors and not the ones that have shut. This is the hardest to do since here in San Diego so many people have money and pretty thing , a person can easily feel invisible. Good luck and stay tuned for more. information as I learn it

DHHS. Department of Health and Human Services expedited help

I got a notice from the Department of Health and Human Services letting me know I was denied for my CalFresh benefits and then I'm unable to get Medicare or Medicaid for my daughter who is under the age of 18. As soon as I gathered all the necessary paperwork I went down to San Diego downtown Department of Health and Human Services had copies made and deposited them with the Department of Health and Human Services. The interesting thing is I made a phone call as I was told to do to a caseworker which was listed at the top of my paperwork as Peterson mr. Peterson called me this morning he tells me he's not in charge of my case he doesn't know who is he won't forward any messages won't do anything about it and then it's my tough luck even though I filed an appeal within the 10-day time period and turned my paperwork in I want everybody to know the Department of Health and Human Services has not been an easy group of people to work with specifically mr. Peterson who refuses to do any work from his side of the table.

Cal fresh and food stamps

It doesn't make any sense to have an emergency service setup for food if you're not going to treat those people as though there was an emergency . Allowing them to sit for several hours without a snack or something to drink makes it difficult to remain patient and wait my turn.... been sitting here for 3 hours now 3 hours I've been sitting here I've got the shakes now I'm feeling as if there's no chance in hell anybody is going to actually really help me today.. I'm watching the women on the other side of the counter chit chat and talk and move like pond water in Michigan in the middle of December. There seems to be no sense of urgency all the people behind that counter a kind and doing their jobs it's still seems to be no sense of urgency around here.. and why should there be these people have jobs have a home to go to and have food in the refrigerator...

It seems to me that the Department of Health & Services has not caught up with the year 2016 and it's about time I have been in the system since 1995 they know everything about my children heck they probably know my child's blood type they can see into my banking accounts because they've never changed I want the Department of Health and Human Services to pull their act together and work as a unit with 211 services and the rest of the nonprofit agencies that are out there. When a person goes to 211 services and/or the Department of Health and Human Services to report that they are in some sort of need the rest of the agencies that are nonprofit should be notified any reach out to the individual who needs help should occur the individual should not be required to attend several orientations from several different organizations turning in paperwork after paperwork after paperwork to several different companies it doesn't make sense if you're homeless if your food list if you're out of a job these agency tend to make getting help more difficult it's Gotta stop America It's gotta stop California somebody do something to fix it . create a unified system.

The California Department of Human Services Fails Again!

I feel the Department of Human Services specifically the Cash Aid and call Fresh Program are faulty in the methods they utilize to calculate monthly income for the needy. The method does not adequately represent the need from the public's perspective. The Department of Child Support and the Department of Human services are supposed to work together to help provide support to minors when the custodial parent is unable to , do to whatever reasons apply. In this instance the two departments fail to cooperate with the custodial parent to resolve issues of destidudeness and they estimate overpayments to the custodial parent and then attach their wages and income, as they try to rebuild their life. To top it off Even after an appeal and ratification of the alleged over payments tot he custodial parent, they still refused to provide documentation and or ratification of the alleged over payments They failed to document the disbursement received from the Department of Child Support Services, and harassed individuals for repayment, to as much as attach the income tax to the new spouse of the custodial parent, even as the ex spouse pays no child support or visits. How are they able to get away with that?

Interestingly the Division of Child Support was able to collect income from my ex and apply it to the balanced owed but they wont supply me of a record of payments and credits. I went to a hearing on the matter and they said all of my paperwork was accepted but i was required to submit within 10 days the pay stubs for Berg Electric for the month of October 2011,I did. Three months later i began to get calls from the state treasury demanding repayment. The Department of Human Services continues to skirt another hearing they continue to demand payment. This is wrong and harassing.
