It Is Not As Obvious As You Think!

You could have knocked me over with a feather!

Last week I was talking with a couple of clients. They had used me before on several occasions and I thought they knew what I did, particularly with my shift to online event production and hosting. I was certain I had even talked about with them directly.

Both of them didn't realise that I was producing events (pressing buttons, mixing audio and video, showing slide decks, highlighting speakers) as well as being the MC for that online event. Following these conversations I have booked two gigs with them.

I thought I was talking about events too much. If it is even possible, I was almost getting tired of my own voice! I was certain that I had mentioned what I am doing several times.

Still, they didn't really know. Hence, here I am talking about it again.

What about for you? What do you do that your customer doesn't know about?
Maybe they only know you for ONE of your services or products. How can you share with them some of the successes that you have achieved for your other customers? How can you let them know you do more than what you are doing for them?

From personal experience, your clients are busy. They often don't hear your message – not because they don't care but because they are focussed on THEIR customer. So how can you make it easy for them to hear about what else you do?

Meanwhile, I will keep spreading the good word about Online Events. (He says, warming up to tell you what he does).

How Do You Get Better?

I have to say, I have been pretty busy the last few months.

From producing online events (mini brag here – they have been in Singapore, UK, USA and later this week in Hawaii!) to helping other speakers get their studios sorted for online presentations to working with corporates to making their online meetings engaging and… worthwhile!

Some people have been asking how did I get to know all I do about this online presenting stuff and how they can get better.

I love what the philosopher Kierkegaard said, "Life has to be lived forwards but understood backwards."

I have been fortunate enough to have some amazing life experiences. Radio DJ, singer, recording music, acting in theatrical productions, improv, stand up, story telling, author, content creator and of course event host and producer. Looking backward, I can understand that each of these elements has taught me something that helps me with my online work.

As you would expect, this puts me in a unique position right now.

I am continuing to learn and get better at what I do. In fact, keep your eye out for something new I have coming soon where I share some of these secrets!!
But for anyone to get better at anything, the key thing is … to do it more!

Wanna be a better singer? Sing more.
Wanna be a better writer? Write more.
Wanna be a better cook? Cook more.

One Simple Thing to Becoming an Expert!

I spent the weekend working with some old hardwood timber I got from pulling down an old picket fence. My gorgeous wife wanted a narrow table to go behind one of the couches at the shed and who am I to not give her what she wants!! (Plus it was awesome to spend time away from the computer).

As with all things, if it isn't on social media then it hasn't happened. So I popped a couple of images there once I finished building it. (The oiling happens next weekend.)

Many people commented on how talented I am. Let me be frank, I am not a talented woodworker! I am a "competent" woodworker and I have spent a bit of money on some tools to help make things easier (thicknesser, table saw, electric sander and so on). Nearly everything I have learnt has come from YouTube and conversations with others who are more skilled than I.

The one simple thing to becoming an expert (or at the very least getting better) is to have a go at it. Step out with confidence and give it a try. At nearly every stage along the way as I was building this I was thinking, "I hope I don't stuff this next bit up!" But I didn't let it stop me.

Oh and there were some stuff ups along the way. But that is how you learn. It is part of the "Fail Faster" approach. At the end I have a nice bit of furniture my wife loves, made from upcycled materials and that I can be proud of (plus I have had 2 people ask me to make them one!)

The One Thing You Need for Your
Online Event Delegates to go WOW!

I was thrilled to host and speaker at a 2 day sales meeting for a client last week. At the end of the event, the delegates, the CEO and the organiser were all going WOW. It was all due to one thing!

Now online meetings and events are almost old fashioned! We have embraced the benefits of online, addressed some of it's misgivings and the future clearly has online events as part of it.

In fact many of us now how online social events. In the past month I have had drinks sessions, dinner parties, improvised theatre performances, cabaret performances, and some music concerts all from the comfort of my own home. My nieces, nephews and close friends all study online regardless of whether it is secondary, tertiary or post grad.

But there is one thing that takes it from "Meh" to "WOW!"

That one thing is having the right event host! (Naturally I recommend me!)

My clients were thrilled that I lifted their event from the regular sales meeting to something memorable, special and fun.

My nieces and nephews happily tell me of the teachers that really bring the session to life rather than the same old – same old!

The right host is the glue that holds everything together. They build the energy when needed, make sure the technology behaves itself (and when it doesn't, they deal with it), and ensure that the focus stays on the delegates as the main players in the event.

Whether it is me as the host, the teacher, your managers, you as the team leader, or someone else, what are you doing to make your delegates go "WOW!"

I Have a Severe Case of Kummerspeck

German is a fantastic language. It gives us wonderful words, that for the non-native German speakers, can sound harsh, guttural and slightly ridiculous.

But they express a situation so well.

Schadenfreude (which means getting pleasure from the pain of others) is the basis of so many tv series and YouTube channels. It is the guilty pleasure of many of us, myself included!

Zeitgeist means the mood of the culture or the spirit of the times and is now commonly used in English conversations.

But the word that best sums up what seems to be happening in my life and those around us is Kummerspeck. Literally this means Grief Bacon.

Many around me are talking about Corona Kilos added from excess eating during lock down or feeling out of control so eating over it. Surely this is grief bacon!

The pandemic has shattered our illusion of control and so we do what we can to feel more in control or to use the time we have as productively as possible. For me that means making cinnamon scrolls, brownies and other yummy treats and then giving most of what I made away.

The longer the pandemic goes on, the more of a challenge it will be for us. Personally, I suspect this pandemic will go until late 2021. There will continue to be rolling lock downs as we deal with trying to minimise the impact of the disease.

The Germans have a word for this too, Scheisse.

But in the mantra of 2020, "It is what it is". So let's continue on, grateful we are not dodging bullets, having bombs dropped on us, or suffering from something far worse than being forced to stay in our homes.

Do You Have Glorious Blooms that Make you Feel Good?

Let's face it. This whole COVID thing sucks.

Having your life restricted, not being able to do what you want, business crumbling, let alone the health impact! It is also a major topic of conversation because we are all caught by it, impacted by it or influenced by it to some extent.

It is easy to get caught up in it – and that is perfectly natural.

What I try and do is focus on something glorious that makes me feel good. This image is of the tulips we have in the back yard. The kaffir lime tree is also laden and the jasmine smells fabulous. I can't help but feel good when I see this.

I was fortunate to be in the audience of a show on Saturday night. The super talented Tash York put on a cabaret show that streamed on YouTube. It was a pay as much as you can and for 90 minutes I was entertained by her and also by the comments as the whole audience got into the show.

On Sunday, I was thrilled to be part of an Improv show, Virtually There, hosted by Paper Goat, a NZ based, world focused Improv collective. You can probably see the recording on Facebook.

Friday night I was having a Zoom call with a friend, solving the problems of the world.

Each of these things brought me some kind of joy and delight. Most of these things didn't cost me any money. For the time I was present in those events, COVID and it's impact were forgotten. It was an enjoyable escape.

I have found so many ways to shift my focus from the troubles and issues I am facing to something that makes me feel good, even if it is only a temporary reprieve.

What is the Best Setup for Online Sessions

So many events people and speakers are looking for amazing tech setups. Some have amazing looking setups like the ones in this image.

But never forget, you are alone in your room as your audience is alone in theirs. Having their pictures on the screen is meaningless if you are not engaging.

The best setup is a camera and a screen. That's it. (and the camera can be a webcam, smartphone or even the one in your laptop.)

The difference is what you do with it.

You have to truly connect with the camera. Because the camera represents the people. You need to look at them.

It doesn't matter your setup if you can't connect or engage.

To many people try and create an online experience and end up making an Average TV Show. And an Average TV Show is just too easy to turn off.

Let go of the tech. Get better at presenting, engaging, playing, laughing, connecting, inspiring, energising and delighting those on the other side of the camera. That is the best setup you could ask for!

How To Be An Influencer!

Over the weekend, I made these Cinnamon Scrolls and without meaning to, I became an Influencer!

Now I am not saying there was a rush on cinnamon, but I do know that three other people made cinnamon scrolls and tagged me. That is certainly exerting some influence. Often that is all it takes. Just a nudge to two or three people and you can start something.

(By the way if you want to make these scrolls, the recipe is here.)

On a different front, I exerted even more influence.

Last week, Zoom released 5.2. While it has a few new, fun features, one really powerful feature is to be able to display your video overlaid on top of your presentation slides. When I read about it, I got a little excited (you can do it manually but this is easier).

I shot a short video showing how to do it and a few other fun things and then released it. (You can watch it here)

To date, that video has been seen on LinkedIn and Facebook about 10,000 times. It has generated some interesting responses, requests for help and a load of new connections.

In both of these examples, all I did was share something interesting, desired and put a funny, authentic twist on it. The key here is "desired".

People were salivating over the cinnamon rolls and were excited about the new feature, especially in my network.

Why Strong Leaderhip is Always About Focus

I am a big fan of The West Wing (the TV show not the present occupant). In particular, I loved how Jed Bartlet would always ask the question, "What's Next?" He did what had to be done. Made tricky decisions and then moved on. What's next?

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has just made a very big decision that has put the majority of our states population under curfew. It will also significantly impact our economy and more than likely people and businesses will suffer financially. It would have been a tough call to make.

To me it represents strong leadership. He and his team have looked at what is in the best interest of all of our people? Their decision means that we will all suffer a little bit so that a few don't have to suffer a lot.

His focus is on a healthy, functioning Victoria and what is the safest, quickest and most cost effective way to get us there.
Not the most popular, the one that makes the most money, but the one that is in the best interest for us all.

To me, that is strong leadership.

How to Deal With Being Out of Control

I was trying to get a shot with Winston the Wonder Poodle next to the almost blooming daffodils. I wanted him to look right down the barrel of the camera. As you can see, I failed. No matter what I said, promised, clicked, whistled, or did would get him where I wanted.

It feels like the same thing is happening in the world right now.

We are trying to get people to follow the rules and guidelines, yet they won't. It is lock down in Melbourne and you are not allowed to have people visit, so one group of people decided to have a birthday party with 16 people. They got caught and now have over $26,000 in fines.

Another group of people lied about their prior whereabouts when entering Queensland and got fined $24,000. Some even tried to run from the car when they were being pursued.

So this poor behaviour means case COVID19 numbers are rising. More businesses are being locked down. Peoples lives are being put at risk. This has led to the discussion to a possible return to Level 4 lockdown in Melbourne. Many people are feeling out of control, and rightly so.

So how do you deal with being out of control of so many important aspects of your life all at the one time?

One simple strategy is to be where your hands are. Our lack of control comes from thinking about the future and projecting how things will be in a time we are not even in yet.

Being where your hands are means considering, what can I do RIGHT NOW?
What is my focus RIGHT NOW?
What is one thing I can do RIGHT NOW that will benefit me, those around and me and move me closer to my goals.

Bringing that focus back to the here and now means you are not thinking about what could, should or would happen but on what IS happening.

I didn't get the photo I wanted with Winston the Wonder Poodle, but I did get some fun shots. I could then move on and focus on the next thing on my list, which was to reward him for a good walk and then give him a big belly rub.

Now that made both of us happy!

The Secret to Successful and Powerful Online Sessions

Do you know how to get your online session attendees excited?
Can you make the audience laugh even if it is a serious or dry subject?
Can you make a recording of your presentation really POP?

There is one secret to successful and powerful online sessions, and so many people don't know it.

This secret applies whether you are presenting online to thousands of people, having a virtual team meeting, or just catching up on Zoom with family and friends. Many people have HEARD the secret but then failed to take it on board. Truth be told, this same secret applies to face to face sessions, physical conferences as well as regular meetings.

That secret is this:

Your delegates and audience want the session to be done WITH them and not just TO them.

That means if you want to play a video of your presentation then get on the chat and engage with the audience as your video is playing. Add an extra dimension to your presentation.

That means if your are presenting, consider what you can do to get the delegates and audience involved. Simplistically, you can ask them questions and get responses in the chat. You could also use polling to ask them questions. Or maybe get everyone working on a Jamboard together.

There are hundreds of ways to make your session more inclusive and still support the theme and learning of what you are after. Find more ways to involve your audience or, quite simply, they will leave.

How Are You Coping with the Online Life?

I have heard many people say during the pandemic that they 'Can't wait for things to get back to normal". Let me save you some time.

It never will.

THIS is our new normal.

One thing that the pandemic has done is forced us to embrace the online life. Many companies were toying with it. Some were planning for it. Others had simply heard about it. But the pandemic made it happen.

This is not a bad thing!

Telehealth in Australia means that more people can be helped with reduced impact on their lives. A recent article on the ABC News website talked about how Telehealth is here to stay. It is cost effective, geographically independent and less time consuming for the client.

Online meetings and events are going great guns! They will never replace face to face meetings but they are not intended to. In many ways, online events are far better than face to face ones. Reduced travel, accomodation, cost, environmental impact and you get to have a more intimate experience that if you were physically there.

Think about it, you are no longer half way back in the room you are right up in the face of the presenter. You are connecting in a way that is not possible en masse. The right facilitators and speakers can make the experience MORE when it is online.

Working from home has become the norm. Good managers are not people watching, they are results watching. Finally, we are given the responsibility to do our tasks without someone looking over our shoulders. This means it is possible to manage all responsibilities while getting your work done and skipping a chunk of travel time and all is associated costs.

The online life is here to stay.

Creating a Virtual Sticky Note Board for Brain Storming

How do you brainstorm with digital sticky notes?
How can everyone access the sticky notes?
Can you move them, comment on them and do it all - for free?

Everyone loves brainstorming with sticky notes or Post-It Notes ® but when we go online, how can we do it virtually?

This is a question loads of people have asked me. And there are some fantastic apps and programs that can help you do it.

I don't know about you, but I am tired of paying $20 a month for this, $15 a month for that or $400 for an annual license. Surely there has to be a better, cheaper way for something you may not use a lot?

Well there is. It is called Google Jamboard and Laurie Brown showed it to me so I want to show it to you and show you how easy, effortless and FREE it is.

I got so excited that I recorded a video on how to use it when I was all bearded and horribly unprofessional, but in a COVID19 age, that boundary is shifting.

My apologies for interupting your Friday. But I have some great news and I though this would be a good time to share it! It is also me blowing my own horn but there is a good reason for it and a reason I thought you would want to know!

I have now been certified as a Certified Speaking Professional and twice as a Certified Virtual Presenter!
My gorgeous wife teases me with the title "Triple Threat!"

The CSP happened five years ago and is a global certification showing that I run a business and present on stage at a level of excellence.
The first Certified Virtual Presenter was bestowed upon me by the Power Women Worldwide group for displaying a level of excellence as a virtual presenter. The CEO of Power Women Worldwide also noticed my passion for online events and my support for others going down the same path. She even called me a feminist! Now that is a compliment. So I am the first man to receive this certification.
Finally, earlier this week I was designated a Certified Virtual Presenter by eSpeakers. A global presence in the speaker market who needed to show their end clients what speakers actually knew what they were doing when presenting virtually.

"So What?" I hear you ask.

Now that is a fair question and this is why it is so important.

Online events are here to stay, and that is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I love meeting people face to face but online events are much more cost effective, inclusive, and easier to pull together. From the monthly committee meeting, catch up with distant friends to online events for the hundreds and thousands of people. Done well they can be so engaging and rewarding.

My mission is to make sure they are done well. I am now producing events globally. I have secured events in the USA, all states of Australia and, as you would know, host the What's Up Wednesdays every week. Most of these I don't leave the house for (or even wear shoes for!)

So it is important to me and more important to my clients that I have a level of certification to reflect my skill and ability to run the technical side as well as host these events.

No doubt you are thinking to yourself, "What a dude!" or "Yay!" maybe even "Legendary" and I appreciate that. Thank you.

I would also appreciate any referals if you know of anyone who is trying to get their event online and is looking for some help.

Some Tips, A Resource and A Question

OMG! It is Wednesday. I must confess, I have struggled getting this email out on a Monday over the last couple of weeks.

Time seems to have shifted. We came off daylight savings and I seem to have lost 3 weeks, 2 months and 1/3 of a day!!

My apologies - I will get back on it!

OK So here are a few things for you.

Some Tips

1) Be kind. As shops, business and states start to open up. Please be kind. To those running the place, the other patrons and even yourself. It is a weird world now and usual rules don't apply

2) Get Better at Video. Our world has been transformed and video is a thing, now more than ever. Julian Mather is a legend at using your smart phone to make things look awesome. If you want to communicate better over video just using your phone, he is the one to turn to. He has a free course here and then offers a more sophisticated course for a fee.
(I rarely take on affiliates but I am an affiliate of his because I am such a fan of his work. So be aware that should you choose to pay him, I would get a commission)

3) Have Fun. The Minister for Fun once told me, "If it's not Fun - don't do it. If you have to do it, Make it Fun!"
So no matter how distanced we have to be, you can always add a bit of fun.

We Have Changed Forever!

We did it!
We did what they said couldn't be done.
It has changed things forever!

So often before the lockdown, business and people would say to me, "Oh no face to face is so much better. We will never go online"

Then there was the lock down.

It is amazing how quickly things will change when they have to. While my personal belief is that we are not out of the woods yet when it comes to minimising the harm from COVID19, it seems to me that Online Sessions are here forever.

People have found how easy it is to connect, communicate, sell, entertain, care, and grow with an online experience. Yes, there are different elements of the online experience that are exhausting or take extra effort, but we will get used to it. We will adapt. We will adopt. It will become our new normal.

We did it with trains! In Victorian times, it was believed that Train Travel could cause instant insanity. Turns out, this isn't the case!

While it won't replace face to face meetings completely, it has changed us forever. I know for a fact it has changed my business forever - mostly in a good way.

So how do we embrace it? How do we change our interactions to take advantage of it's benefits? How do we deal with the many different tools to use?

The secret is to not go alone.

I know I have learnt so much from those around me.
I have learnt some of the key issues can be easily dealt with regardless of the technology.
I have learnt that there are secrets to each platform to get the most out of it.

The world has changed forever - I believe for the better.

My renewed mission is to Get Events Online. From large conferences down to small team and family gathers. It means I won't have to travel as much. It means I get to spend more time with my loved ones. It means I get to have a global presence while staying at home.

When it comes to events, the world has changed forever and I, for one, am glad!

5 Keys to An AWESOME Online Session

It is not just Eventprofs and Conference crew who are running online events. In the current world order, online sessions are the new norm.

We are running them for family, friends, oh and work too! But there is a big difference to just "jumping online" and running an Awesome event!

More of my clients are asking me to produce the whole sessions, technically as well as the content, because they know they need to take it up a notch.

From my experience, here are the 5 Key Elements you MUST get right (in no order of importance):

1) Timing - face to face or online, it doesn't matter. You must get the timing right. Stick to time, honour those who turned up on time, and keep to the run sheet.

2) Audio - I don't care if I can't see you fully but if your sound is bad, I will disconnect from the call.

3) Make it Interactive - You are competing with Facebook and Email. Only by getting people to do things, play more, poll, or respond will you keep their attention and keep them awake.

4) No Dead Air - Channel your inner DJ. Dead air will kill the session.

5) Have Fun - This is the new normal. Find a way to make it fun and your sessions will stand out.

May the 4th Be With You

Even Australians can get in on this holy day of Jedi Worship!

But to be serious, it is always good to look for a laugh, wherever you can find it!
Particularly with all that is/isn't going on at the moment.

We have come a long way since the lockdown. With all the discussions I am having with friends and business colleagues, a bit of excitement and possibility is starting to grow. We can now see possibilities for the future - maybe not light sabre wielding kangaroos, but still, some good possibilities.

But there are risks too.

We can't risk forgetting those who have been hurt and are continuing to hurt due to the lock down.
We can't risk putting people in harms way unnecessarily.
We can't risk building a possible future on a foundation of others suffering.

So as we look at our possible futures, it is important that we stay in today, look for the great stuff around us and keep our sense of humour strong!

May the 4th be with us all!

The fantastic news is it is not about the technology. In fact is has NEVER been about the technology. Let's face it, there are a stack of technologies available and I am sure there are plenty more in the pipeline.

There is no way you will be able to master all of these. The rate of change of this technology is vast. New features are included all the time. And the good news is, you don't have to.

The great news is that it is not about the technology.

It is not even about you!

It is AAAALLLLLL about the audience.

So keep them busy. Keep them engaged. Keep them on the edge of their seats. Here are some ways to deliver fabulous and effective presentations:

Lots of slides: My average is one per second - (a slide with 4 points becomes 4 slides)

Make it interactive: polls, questions, responses in the chat, favourite coffee, biggest problems - fun questions.

Make it fun: Even if you are presenting academic delight - find a way to make it fun

Give more energy: one of the biggest things is you don't have the audience of the crowd to energise the room. It is all you. So use voice tone variations, pacing differences and even movement. I will lean into the camera and whisper!

Ask better questions: Make the audience actual think and reflect. Token questions just don't cut it.

Just a few ideas to help you perform better online.

Why Is Technology Like Fire?

Technology is like fire because like fire, it is a brilliant tool and a poor master!

With so many online sessions and new apps and latest programs, people are forgetting that is NOT about the technology, it is ALL about the people.

Regardless of what technology you use, the focus needs to be on how to ENGAGE with who you are talking to, what are THEIR needs, how can you talk WITH them and not to them?

Over the Easter Break (which felt just like every other day because we all barely left the house!) many of us will have connected with family online. I am sure there was lots of: "We can't hear you", "Mute your microphone", "Unmute your microphone", "Have you got a microphone" kind of comments being made.

It is the joy of learning! If you are using technology more and more to connect, then make sure you get the basics right.

Here are some of the key mistakes that people make online so you don't have to make them!!

How Do You Fight an Invisble Enemy?

Covid19 is essentially invisible. So much so that some people don't think it exists or don't understand how much damage it can do.

It is hard to see, hard to know if you have it, hard to come to terms how easily it can spread and how deadly it can be.

But it is not the only enemy at this time!

For some of us, the enemy is boredom, or the boredom of our kids, or the frustration of not knowing what is going to happen, or not knowing when life will go back to normal, or not knowing how you will pay the rent...

So how do you fight this invisible enemy?
How do you maintain strength when you are continually being drained?
How do you keep your spirits up when everything seems overwhelming, confusing and depressing?

The answer is HOPE.

Often it is the hope of a better future, a different opportunity, a new direction that keeps us going.
But HOPE is not always easy to maintain.

I like the definition of HOPE as Hearing Other Peoples Experiences.

Whether it is having a conversation with friends about how they are going, what are the positives they are experiencing or maybe it is reading some books or watching something that talks about turning things around.

I find the film Amazing Grace incredibly powerful. It's representation of the fight to end slavery in the UK and the many barriers faced.

While there are some very negative things going on, there are many stories of HOPE as well. Future Crunch are continually posting good news stories happening during the current lockdown.

So the best way we can fight our invisible enemies is to have HOPE. Be inspired by it, have it drive you to take some new action.

I have HOPE for a much better future that knows we are all connected and has us treating each other far better than we have.

Take the Time to Take the Time

What a strange world we now live in.

There are a lot of people in pain. Financial pain, pain from kids needing home school, pain from elderly parents who just won't stay home, pain from spending as much time as you have been with all of your immediate family, pain of not having enough alone time, pain from not seeing or spending time with friends, pain of illness or even death of key people in your life... all sorts of pain.

The world has irrevocably changed for us.

We will never go back to how it was and I suspect we will horde toilet rolls for a long time to come!

So make sure you take the time to take the time.

Your kids won't be schooled like they used to. Home schooling is different. Home schooling under lockdown is even more different. So teach them lessons they won't get at school. Have fun with them. Play stupid games. Take the time to show them how important they are to you.

Take the time to look after yourself. Take time out in the bath. Sit on the balcony with a book. Put a do not disturb sign on your door and just spend some time with yourself.

Take the time to connect. My gorgeous wife and I are having quite a few Digital Drinks Parties. My friends 13 year old sent me a message the other day saying she missed seeing us. So tonight we are having a Digital Drinks Party. We have the technology so why wouldn't we use it.

Take the time to potter around the place. Maybe you have a few odd jobs on the To Do list. It may be a good time to do that. Or not!

Whatever you do, you know as well as I "Life as Usual" has changed. It is more "Life as Unusual". So take the time to consider your life. What do you want to change, what will you keep, what will you tweak.

I don't think you need to be massively productive. I think it is important to process what is happening for you. To reach out to friends. To ask for help if you need it. To offer help if you can.

Whatever you choose to do, take the time to take the time. It's important!

What In The World?

Well... this is interesting isn't it!!

In Australia, we have just had "Lock Down" orders given. So basically, don't leave your home unless it is essential.

HELLOOOOOO INTERNET!!

Dear-Reader, my theme for 2020 is More Love. I did not think it was going to be needed as much as it has been.

People are scared. They don't know what is happening. They don't know what to do. So they do what they can. That seems to be buying as much toilet paper as possible!! (I cannot believe the number of conversations I have had about toilet paper).

So here is what I want to do.

I want to make myself, my friends and my community available to you. So I am starting a new online session for you.

You have heard of Tuesdays with Morrie, Friday Night Festivities or event Taco Tuesday.

Well... welcome to Wednesdays with Warwick!

Every Wednesday at 4pm Melbourne time, I will be hosting one hour of connection.

In this messed up, stressed out, dressed down kind of world we are currently it, it can be a challenge to find somewhere and get time for you.
Time to share what is going on with people like you.
Time to ask for help with no embarrassment or guilt from people like you.
Time to contribute thoughts, ideas and ... well ... maybe even poetry with people like you.

No judgement
No recordings
No bullshit
Just 100% caring, support and, dare I say it, love.

Exiled for the Good of the Realm

We live in interesting times.

For all my gregariousness and enthusiasm, I am conservative by nature. Not one for fads but open to scientific method, new ideas, and decisions made on facts.

In the last few weeks, most of my conference bookings have been cancelled, postponed or deferred to an online event (where I tend to excel!) And the more I read about COVID-19, the more seriously I take the recommendations from the health experts.

My focus is to stay alert but not alarmed. Not to panic but to be prepared.

Here is an excellent piece by one of Australia's most eminent doctors, Doctor Norman Swan, broadcast the ABC. It is only 8 minutes and I recommend you watch it.

So my gorgeous wife and I have made the decision to send ourselves into exile, for the good of the realm. Some call it social distancing, but going into exile sounds more exotic.

It means we are cancelling a lot of our social engagements, minimising our contact with others and doing what we can to keep everyone safe.

One of the pieces I saw said to not approach our situation to prevent ourselves from catching this virus, but to assume we already have it and to act so that we don't spread it to others.

There have been so many great stories of people and communities supporting each other and working together to get through a messy time in our lives. Let's be part of that. Let's focus on the WE and not the ME.

Just know, I am here for you. If you are also going into exile and get lonely, give me a call. Let's chat. Let's sing songs. Let's have group calls with others. Let's share ideas on cleaning our bums without toilet paper (oh so many ideas on that one!)

There is so much we can do. So let's do it together.
