R.M.Williams Cardwell Belt

R.M.Williams belts are manufactured in Australia, the Cardwell belt is a limited edition belt introduced for Summer 2009.

This is a sand coloured cowhide belt with an R.M.Williams branded buckle. At $NZ 110 this is a good price with both belt and buckle being of best quality.

The buckle is also interchangeable, so you can re-use the belt with other buckles.

Get Cracking! - Bull Whips in store now

After a bit of a wait, we've now got plenty of affordable Bull Whips back in stock. The whips are made of hand-braided leather with a cotton popper for a great "crack"! Whips are available in Black or Brown leather, 6 ft, 8 ft or 10 ft sizes.

For young whippersnappers, the shorter whip will be the easiest to crack.

If you haven't cracked a whip before, there's a great clip on Youtube which will get you started, and also give you a few ideas as to how you can make good use of your whip.

Boots and more for bikers

It's great to see Motorcyclists coming into the store, since we opened last year, we've found that our stock has been well received by bikers as well as horse riders!

For bikers, cowboy boots provide a good alternative to what might be considered as more "traditional" biker boots which are either designed for motorbike riding and look out of place when not on the bike, or are the buckle feature boots which are not to everyone's style or taste.

Why are cowboy boots a good match for bikers
1. They have a long shaft, keeps the ankle and lower leg warm and protected
2. Generally they are well made of high quality leather, giving long life and protection.
3. As for riding a horse, The heel gives good grip!
4. Cowboy boots look good on or off the bike - you could probably even get away with wearing them to work.

Buck Brannaman coming back to New Zealand

Buck Brannaman is one of the worlds leading practitioners of Horsemanship, his last visit to New Zealand was in 2008 and was well received.

Buck will be back in New Zealand again in January next year, there are two three day clinics, one near Christchurch and one in Taranaki. The clinics are being organised by HorsemanshipNZ - dates and locations are specified below.

To quote Buck:

"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep myself from getting killed.

I started to realise that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship between horse and rider"

Cowboy Boots - why are they like they are

A while back I did some research on Cowboy boots to find out what history and reasoning went into the design. The article is up on our website at http://www.out-west.co.nz/info/cowboy-boots

One of the key things about them (which is kind of obvious when you think about it) is that if a cowboy falls off his horse and gets his foot caught in the stirrup, the boot "should" come off allowing him to fall to the ground without being dragged for miles at high speed!
