Traditionally, I have had lots of Science Fiction and Fantasy writers with the occasional Horror person thrown in for good measure. You may not know this, but I have been looking for guests who write outside the normal featured genres on Get Published. Traditionally, I have had lots of Science Fiction and Fantasy writers with the occasional Horror person thrown in for good measure. This hasn’t been done to exclude all the other genres, I promise you. It is more about who I know in the writing field than any effort to exclude anyone. That means, I haven’t been networking outside my own chosen genre as well as I should. That is a shame because ALL writers have something to share about their own publishing journeys, market differences and even the various tropes that are inherent to their own genres of choice. I am happy to have a guest from a new genre today. My guest today is Nicole Chardenet. She has just released her newest book, Sumer Lovin’ in multiple eFormats with the dead tree version coming out in just a few days. Sumer Lovin’ is a very different book from what I normally read. It is a comedy of sorts that deals with people trying to find love and lust in Toronto. Definitely not something I normally read. I could tell you what I thought of it now, but that would only spoil the review I will give you in the Tips and Typos section of the book.   Regardless of whether it is normally my thing, Nicole and I had a LOT of fun in the interview. Humour is something I am very interested in and the conversation was great. Oh yeah, and did I mention that Nicole’s first book was self-published? Because of that, she was able to give us a comparison between self-published and tradionally published. It was great! That’s today’s episode. That is not to say I’ve recorded those things in the stories, but used the experiences to provide flavour to the writing. Definitely not word for word, but more in how they would cause my characters to act and the story to develop. So, I decided it would be fun to have a few people join me to discuss this. As often happens, I was only able to line up the schedule with a couple people, specifically Jeff Hite and JR Murdoch. We met via Google Hangout and just talked about how experiences have affected our own writing. This is the first time I’ve used Google Hangout in this way, so, the audio is not quite as crisp as I would like. Still the discussion is good so I hope you enjoy that portion of the show. One of the old friends is Tina Moreau. When I first, she was a young writer who also read slush for a local press. Then she took a break to start a family and I didn’t see her for a couple years. This year’s convention marks the first time I’ve seen her in a couple years and she came to Calgary as the head of a brand new publishing house. Tina is a co-owner and publisher for Tyche Books. I had the opportunity to sit down with Tina and hear exactly what Tyche is looking for. They have some really interesting ideas and I look forward to seeing more from them. When I started planning Get Published almost four years ago, I never thought it would last this long. I have to admit, the past while I’ve been wondering if it is time to end Get Published. I’ve been feeling a little worn down at times and it just feels like one project too many. Still, a lot has happened to me since I started and Get Published is responsible for at least some of my writing success. Because of the show, I have talked with people who have shared their wisdom with me and with you. It has pointed me in directions I never thought I would have traveled. It has also opened the doors to writing relationships that are going strong and getting stronger. When I think of that, it gives me hope that some of you may have realized some successes or learned some important information because of the show. If that has happened, please drop me a line and let me know. I would love to dedicate the 100th episode to you and your own achievements whether you have been a guest or are a listener. Speaking of achievments, I am proud to have two of my friends on the show today. The writing and podcasting team of Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine graciously agreed to give me some of their time to talk about their writing. Tee and Pip are wonderful people and writers and I can say I’ve been cheering them on since the early days when they were first podcasting and getting their individual works published by a smaller press. A lot has happened since those days; they are being published by big-six publishers now both individually and as a writing duo. Their steampunk work is being raved about and…they are a married couple as well as a collaboration team. It was a true delight speaking to them both again. I know you will enjoy the interview. On the one hand, you are achieving things you have worked on for a long time. On the other hand, you suddenly have a lot more to do with those achievements and less for ... I don’t know if any of you have ever noticed, but success is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you are achieving things you have worked on for a long time. On the other hand, you suddenly have a lot more to do with those achievements and less for everything else. That has definitely been the case for me. Since the final revisions for Mik Murdoch began in earnest, I have had less time for podcasting, writing, television and a host of other things that I enjoy. The only ones I have worked hard not to neglect are my family. Without them, there is no point writing. I foolishly thought that when the revisions were complete I would have lots of time. Then, I took on another project, namely the Action Pack Podcast. At the time I felt that I could handle 4,000 words per month. What I didn’t count on was that I would be spending a great deal of time promoting the book. Well, okay. Promoting and obsessing about it, if truth be told. That also doesn’t even consider the other books that need to be revised and readied for submission. And now I have the second Mik Murdoch book under contract to write. It can be overwhelming. Still, I’m not complaining. It just means that I sleep a lot less now. Have any of you had similar experiences? I’d love to hear about them and how you dealt with them. On today’s show, I talk to Scott Roche about Crowd Sourcing. Scott has successfully used Crowd Sourcing with his current novel release Ginny Dare. He is also looking at Kickstarter as a means to bring the sequel to Ginny Dare forward. I also wanted to briefly talk about a couple of new projects I’m working on that you may or may not be aware of. The first, of these is the Mad Scientist Handbook that you have likely heard a promo for on previous episodes of the show. The Handbook is what I’m calling a pseudo-anthology. It is going to be a tongue-in handbook for the wannabe Super-villain. Picture Dr. Evil as a boy and what he would read as he tries to take over the world. Submissions are now open and you can find more information at madscientistanthology.wordpress.com. The second project that is scheduled to kick off on February 29th is the Action Pack Podcast. I am working on this project with Scott Roche, AKA spiritualtramp on Twitter, and my writing partner, JRMurdock who you will hear later in the show. We’re all pretty excited about this one. In this monthly podcast we will each be writing a serialized story. That’s three distinct stories, a portion of which you will hear each and every month until they are done. All three stories will be in every episode. We will also be putting them out in an e-Book pulp version each month through Flying Island Press. For my story, I will finally be writing Boy Scouts of the Apocalypse. We have music and artwork all lined up and I know it’s going to be awesome. For those who could attend, it meant a weekend of fun, friends and fabulous panels. Of course, not everyone can go to Balticon and some of us decided to have an impromptu virtual convention of our own that we called Balticant. It wasn’t well-planned or even widely attended but the conversations were fantastic and made the whole effort worthwhile. We recorded a few of the sessions and, in this episode, I would like to play the first session where we talk about conventions, both physical and virtual and the value they bring. Scott is one of the editors with Flying Island Press and has come out with a self published version of his book Ginny Dare, Crimson Sand in both paper and eBook formats. That makes it too timely to ignore, so in today's tips and typos section I try to answer the question, "when do you know it's time to stop revising your story?" One last note; I've dropped the bit rate of the podcast from 128 Kb to 64 Kb to make the mp3 smaller and faster to download. Please let me know if you notice any real difference.
