A new year is a time of new beginnings, reborn promises and an innocent optimism for the future. As with our personal lives and the ethical codes that define us as humanity, we make resolutions in the name of progress, of science and better living for all through technology. So, as 2013 begins to pick up steam, and 2012 smolders unceremoniously to cold ash behind us, what resolutions have we made for technology this year?

Let us stop and meditate on the problems and mistakes of 2012, and the untapped future of 2013, and see just what promises of innovation the new year may hold. Those who do not learn from the past are forever doomed to repeat it in a vicious cycle, and those who do not look optimistically to the future are blind. Here are the top 10 things we must resolve to change this year, and the mistakes we must learn from as well.
 

#1 – Mobile Bandwidth

2012 saw the greatest boom in handheld and mobile use and deployment since its inception at the turn of the century. By the end of 2012, one in three people in North America, regardless of their economic status, had some form of portable smart device and a data plan to support them. While software developers, marketers and business gurus scrambled to accommodate and exploit this burgeoning industry, what mistakes were made in the process?

The greatest problem with mobile development is in fact bandwidth. Mobile carriers are primarily 3G, which is a painfully slow and deprecated RF carrier band that rivals low-end DSL if that. 4G was introduced as far back as 2010 in select market groups, but has yet to be delivered to the public at large. Companies seem content to charge 4G prices for slapdash 3G service, and aren’t taking the initiative to spread this service to a more global outreach.

In 2013, let us focus on delivering proper bandwidth to these devices, be it by properly implementing 4G, or by spreading the use of strong WiFi transponders across more of the country and across the globe. Mobile is powerful, but its use and practicality is severely limited and hindered by this lack of proper carrier power to do anything of worth with it. People are growing wise to this, and are becoming despondent with how slow their mobile devices are in comparison to their lighting fast modern landline connections.
 

#2 – Internet and Infrastructure

On that note, let us look at the state of the landline infrastructure in most of North America. It is in an appalling state as of the beginning of this year. Prices for 20gb/s bandwidth ranges from $50-$80 USD per month, where other nations such as the UK and South Korea achieve speeds of 60gb/s for $30 USD, even in rural areas. In North America, it’s usually impossible to even get this overpriced connection outside urban centers, while many countryside residents are relegated to the use of 1.5mb/s DSL connections for upward of $50 USD per month, with no viable alternatives. Aside from the obvious and blatant antitrust laws this violates, this hampers the progress of things such as SaaS, DLC gaming and new media delivery platforms that are becoming the standard elsewhere. This lopsided accessibility to innovations is going to continue to cause a devastating rift in the standardization and continued progress of digital markets in countries such as the United States. In 2013, let us resolve to improve this infrastructure and the business ethics of those who operate it, for the benefit of all.
 

#3 – Ecommerce and Delivery

Let us also strive to improve delivery methods for parcels and packages ordered over online marketing and outlet centers. As of 2012, parcels ordered off of EBay often took upward of two weeks to arrive from sources less than 500 miles away, discouraging e-commerce on a grand level. While the procedures for physical delivery are a challenge for someone other than technologists, let us resolve to standardize tracking systems and refine their update speeds and accuracy, so that those who purchase goods online can see exactly where their package is, even while in transit. We have the technology to accomplish this via GPS and data query systems.
 

#4 – Overcoming the fear of SaaS and Media Streaming

On a more sociological note, let us work to shed our fears of stream-based media and software, which, along with our infrastructure problems, is hampering the progress of platform-independent centralized computing. The benefits of this liberated software and computing framework far outweigh the paranoia we feel about our software and files not being physically in our homes or on our devices, and they far outweigh the expenses of fixing those infrastructure problems.
 

#5 – Equality in Platforms

Mobile technology is booming, and it’s not going to stop booming. However, mobile technology is not going to replace standard computing interfaces any time soon. People still need to type; people still need a desktop system at which they can work on a large display. Companies seem to have the misconception that just because people can carry a computer in their pocket, that this is the only computer they need.

In 2013, let us resolve to give both technologies, mobile and desktop, equal attention and equal respect, because they are not interchangeable nor are they one in the same. Let us perfect each experience for our users, remaining aware of their needs and the context they are in per interface. Let us see a rise in new technologies that address user context and self-service, such as WalkMe, interactive website guidance system.
 

#6 – Taming the Advertising Shrew

We saw a respite in the aggressiveness of online advertising from 2008-2010, with banner ads being subdued, and ads in internet video streams being relegated to a “pre-roll” method in which an ad played before a video began, and then no others. This was a wonderful rethinking of the advertising model for online delivery. And it worked. People felt no need to block these ads or complain about them in any way, on an average level.

Yet, in 2011, we saw a resurgence of old advertising methodologies come back, in force. We saw the reemergence of pop ups in the form of AJAX interstitials, we saw sites such as Blip and YouTube introduce pop ups inside video players and commercial interruptions, and we even saw pay media platforms, such as Hulu, enforce advertising on their paid models.

This has caused the biggest surge in media piracy in the history of online media, and the parallels are obvious. Let us resolve in 2013 to learn from this, and adopt once more the more passive, unobtrusive yet effective advertising models we worked out just a couple years back, and stick with them.
 

#7 – Better User Accounts

User accounts have become more of a burden to create in recent years. Once, creating a user account for a standard forum or web service simply meant creating a username, a password, providing an email address, and maybe one security question. Now, a user sign up form consists of this information, plus private information such as phone numbers, addresses, credit card numbers and even photo IDs. It also requires up to five security questions and a “captcha” image. These images are usually impossible to read, and half the time, the image and the text expected do not match. Let us find a better way to prevent this, and say goodbye to “captchas” forever. Let us reduce the amount of information we ask of our users when they sign up, because people are growingintolerant of it, and this is reducing consumerism on drastic levels.
 

#8 – Further Integration of Social Media in Some Places

Social media has become a staple for accomplishing many things, primarily in communications and business networking. Blogs and social network sites such as Reddit, Tumblr and Twitter have become invaluable tools for communications and outreach on a personal and commercial level.

In 2013, let us resolve to take advantage of these simple forms of social media in the CRM industry, to continue the deprecation of outmoded and tiresome models, such as phone trees and ticket-based help desks, which have shown so much trouble in the past. Let us strive to improve our customer relations by providing a convenient platform they already use in order to reach us, and thereby also improve speed and save time.
 

#9 – Downplaying Mobile Requirements Despite the Boom

It has come to a point where one in three people have a mobile smart device. Yet, more and more internet services demand mobile access for confirmations, validations and password recovery. This confounds people who do not have these devices and causes severe issues for them. Prime examples are EBay’s requirement of phone validation in order to sell items online, and Google’s requirement of SMS in order to recover email addresses and sometimes to sign up for them as well. Let us resolve to stop this in 2013 because there will always be valued customers who choose not to have these, or may not want to give their numbers out or pay for receiving an SMS, or any number of other reasons this is just bad practice.
 

#10 – Better Business Ethics Online

Business ethics practiced by digital companies continue to degrade rather than improve as we had all hoped. Gaming companies continue to exploit DLC to charge full game prices for unfinished work and then charge for the DLC to fix them. Media companies punish users with painful DRM procedures that border on viral, and violate privacy on many levels. Sony continues to be the biggest culprit in this practice, but they are far from the only company who does this. Companies providing trial-based, freemium SaaS become increasingly inaccessible to potential customers by requiring credit card numbers in order to use the trials. Many people are becoming wise to the traps that credit cards are and others are cautious about giving their numbers out if they have them. Let us resolve to find a better solution for this. Let us stop fearing piracy, as it is an inevitable part of the industry.

During my time as an intern, I worked in the marketing department. Even though I had little experience in marketing and working at start ups, Natasha gave me important responsibilities and the chance to grow. She served as not only my boss, but also my mentor and friend. I was able to grow as a leader and learn new skills in the world of marketing and social media. I helped manage their corporate blog, Get.Rounds, as well as the Rounds Fun Blog by creating content, writing posts, brainstorming new ideas, and assigning topics to other interns. I monitored message boards and responded to user inquires. I also put together the monthly newsletter. I was able to learn about SEO, Facebook analytics, Twitter skills, and more. One of the most enriching experiences I had at Rounds was working on a marketing project from the ground up, from conception to planning and execution, to budgeting and predicted outcomes.
 

Another great aspect about Rounds was the sense of community. The Rounds team became more then just the people I worked with; they became my friends. We hung out outside of work, had monthly drinks night at local bars, weekly lunches on the company, celebrated birthdays together, and my favorite, Salad Tuesday! It was a great way to connect with each other and make everyone feel welcome. Going to work everyday was something I enjoyed and looked forward to. One of the hardest days in Israel was my last day of work and the goodbye party we had afterward.

Working for Rounds was not only a great way to break into the marketing world and gain valuable work experience, but it also gave me self-confidence. I was giving multiple opportunities to do public speaking and promotion, from speaking with Natasha to potential start ups and interns about the program to participating in a marketing video for Oranim.
 

The Rounds’ work environment also fostered creativity and leadership, it is a place where everyone’s opinion and ideas are important. Natasha and the rest of the team had faith in me and my abilities, and in turn, my self confidence and professional confidence grew. She also helped me work on my resume, guiding me on how to promote myself and not sell the work I had done short. One of the most amazing things Natasha did for me was introduce me to the co-founders of Hashtagart, my current employers. It was her recommendation that landed me the job and got me to where I am today.

One of the main things I took away from this internship is that I am not “stuck” in a career path. I graduated with a B.A. in sociology and had only worked in non-profit. I now in live in New York City and work for a great marketing solutions company, and am continuing to grow as a professional. I went to Israel to see what else was out there. What I found was Rounds, Natasha, and the exciting world of marketing.

Due to a tragic accident that occurred almost three months ago, Tinychat shut down the site and has not yet mentioned when it will return. Trevor George, a 19 year old teenage boy from Nebraska, accidentally shot himself in the head whilst in a chat room. You can read more about the tragic accident here.

I did my Birthright trip a few months before I graduated and really fell in love with the country of Israel, and while those companies offered great opportunities, I could not get rid of the thought in the back of my head of how cool it would be to live in Tel Aviv, Israel! Through some research I found an awesome program called Career Israel, which places you for 5 months to live and work in Tel Aviv in whatever industry you are interested in pursuing as a career. I wanted to work for a technology startup, and for the past 4 months I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work with Natasha as my boss at Rounds!

While at Rounds, I have been given a crash course on the ins and outs of social media marketing. I had previously interned at multiple technology companies working in the finance and business development departments, but never in a marketing role. Rounds gave me a perfect opportunity to learn about social media while at the same time executing multiple marketing campaigns via their Facebook, Twitter, Blog Posts, Google+ and Pinterest Accounts. With over 650,000 fans and over 1,000,000 active monthly users it was an unbelievable experience knowing that my marketing efforts were being felt by such a large audience.

The great thing about Rounds is that it is continuously changing and growing, adding new features weekly. Many of these features are a direct result of what the target market of North American and Europeans want from the application. Because I am Rounds’ target market, I have had the opportunity to give direct feedback to our developers as to what I like and dislike, as well as offer new creative ideas for new features on the application.

Now that my time at Rounds is winding down, I am starting to pursue some career opportunities for when I get back to San Francisco in social media marketing roles. Before Rounds, I never thought that I’d do social media and consider it a career choice. However, through Natasha’s mentoring and the rest of the enthusiastic Rounds team, I am fairly confident I will make a career out of it!
