Sailor Animate Scene Process!

2014-04-15T11:21:00.003-07:00

Hey All!

It's been a little quiet lately, things were under NDA so I couldn't really post much. I've got dragged into the sailor animate project somehow and here's how it went.

So Here's The shot I'm trying to redo.

I created the BG first as a sort of Layout Process:

I have a new toy, a 13inch cintiq. And I've been dying to prove to myself that I didn't waste my precious money with the idea that I could suddenly make art beautifully by spending a lot of money. (it's been a great purchase, BTW). But for this project, I cheated.

I started by making the Key Frames on the good old Paper. Here I could noodle around with the most precise and sensitive strokes, and not have to deal with shitty Flash drawing feel. I could concentrate on key elements of the scene without the distraction of fuggly and confusing lines.

So eventually I cleaned it up in the Flash and challenged myself to do all the inbetweens digitally. I even had to add a new keyframe in Flash. And here it is:

Next time I won't cheat and will go all digital.

Didn't even come close to 31, but that's okay. I will continue to make a lot more art with inks. It was a great exercise in just coming up with ideas and putting them on paper, which is a lot harder than it sounds.

I'm at odds ends with the supplies I'm using, I've ordered some new ones. Hopefully It turns out to be worth it. Generating Ideas everyday is getting easier, Now its about filtering out the worry about being cheesy and jus do it.

It's been a wild week. Yes I jumped on October 2nd instead of the first. When I joined this challenge, I really wanted to push myself through the artistic process, skipping no steps. It's also a chance for me to get some of the cheesier stuff out of my system. (probably wont though.)

SketchBook October 1st

2013-10-01T01:39:00.000-07:00

Only had a few pages left in the sketchbook I've been carrying around and a hole lot of artists block. Here are some of the better ones. All four of the pages are studies and I'm finding that doing these type of drawings help a lot to get the gears in motion.

Some thoughts:

I really have a hard time coming up with things to draw about. I always get caught up with being original or cool. That's why its always easier to draw from life for me, there's so much to start from. Lots of time I try to avoid taking ideas, but now I realize its limiting to think that way, and it really boxes you in. So if you are an artist who is still alive, and my composition looks frighteningly similar to yours, You jus' got strait jacked, sucka.

Pacific Rim recently released and as of this writing I haven't seen it. I've been deep into FFXIV:ARR, an mmo, Beta though. The key facts about these two things is that they aren't trying to do anything unique, artsy, or innovative. They are just being honest.

Minibook

Mainbook and various pieces of paper (sorry for multiplescans)

Some notes:

Haven't been feeling too hot lately (mainly because its been hot as hell). Even through these times in your lives you gotta keep trucking and grinding. I think doing some volume control exercises, practice those basics forever.

Sketchbook update first week of July '12

2012-07-03T10:03:00.000-07:00

Keep'n it bite sized from now on.

Some notes.

So the key to the practice in the past few drawings is clarity. for most of the time i've been using a 4b-ish and that kind of pencil has cheated me into interesting pencil strokes of messy unclear drawings for the past 3 years. So I picked up an H pencil randomly and found the effect on the thinking of drawing to be very interesting and positive. Its less about insta interesting line quality and more about structure.

The two brown pages are done mostly with the oh so powerful 8B. They were drawings i was doing around town while Lauren was in the hair salon The 8B is really interesting because unlike the 4B, you really have to think about how you lay down your lines or else your marks are.. too interesting.. (a muddy mess ) .

Lastly im very happy with how the last drawing of the lady getting her hair did. It was done cleanly and tells a nice little story too. hope to have more drawings like that!

2012-06-24T10:25:00.000-07:00

I should do this more frequently so i dont have to have massive posts.

(probably want to right click and open this one up in another tap)

Some Notes and reflection

Again, next time I wont let it get so bad. So I kind of Goofed with this stuff, i said i wasn't just going to doodle on a page willy nilly for my mainbook, but worrying about that is just going to stop me from drawing. Better to draw bad pages than to not draw at all. I wish to death that i can find a good White to really take advantage of midtone paper. I've switched from a prismacolor white to white chalk crayon thing and i like it more, but the problem is that it fades away after a while. Don't know what to do.

In terms of draughtsmenship development, the brown pages are in chronological order for the most part (I sometimes go back to old pages and spruce them up a bit either with ink or more defined drawings). If you look back at some of my earlier sketchdumps, you can see some development in clarity and confidence of line. Regardless of style, I'm trying to develop less of a stroke and pray habit, and put down more and more thoughtful and developed lines. Really still trying to grasp the basics even after all of these years.

I really want to up the storytelling in my drawings, and get rid of the purposeless doodles. I think that is the key to transcending as an artist. Have to be purposeful with a page to commit it to being a

Study of Life, form, light, technique
or, Idea development or visual development
or, Storytelling composition of life or form imagination
and maybe some doodle pages here and there to burn keep drawing.

That's enough rambling for now. Thanks for checking this out!

Old sketchdump

2012-04-03T09:29:00.002-07:00

I've experimented with ways to post my sketchbook on these blogs before and most of them haven't really be successful. So the easiest way i found was just to upload each page separately.

Some notes.

Well for a long time now i've been wanting to ditch that damn micron and switch to croquil and now i have! Sure the micron comes out clean and controllable but it just isn't as fun, plus you have to do way too many restrokes.

The first set of images are from my mini book, a sketchbook i can keep in my pocket and pull out whenever. Most of these are from life. they feature personalities like Sebastian Agudelo and a lot of drawings from Jeans Cafe.

The next set, on spiral bound brown paper, is my Mainbook. Which isn't a full sized 8x11 but 5x7 or something like that. Take a lot of notes, work out a lot of thumbs. This sketchbook i wanted to make it a goal to try to have presentable drawings (Drawings that would actually be interesting to look at) because a common criticism of my work is that it doesnt get 'finished'. So i'm tackling that problem head on and learning how to finish my drawings. I would like to keep to my other goal and make each page cohesive to a purpose rather than just doodle a dude in 3 quarters. Less than half of these are from life, which i wish i was doing more in my main book.

Last 3 are forays into digital painting/drawing. Just Quick doodles except for the one with the girls. really want to get better digitally, maybe i need a new tablet. The last one with the girls is one i'm pretty proud of though. I plan on taking it to a finish.

Alrighty that is it. Animatic update coming shortly.

Little Animations

2012-02-25T10:44:00.000-08:00

Good Days everyone. Over this week i've done some small animations, one that is just a test and another will be a more finished loop when the time comes.

Some little notes on both of these little pieces.

The Character design credit for Crabby there goes to my good friend Josh CianCiulli. you can find his stuff here https://vimeo.com/user7035079. I animated the frames on paper and then inked it with a micron on said frames. I was debating to myself whether I should ink with illustrator (a program i do not know how to use) or photoshop or sketchbook. In the end I went with the traditional route because I didn't want to compromise my accuracy. Sure the scanning process is a pain, but bigger headaches are avoided.

Second little thing is sackboy doing a little back dash (hop). This model i made from the ground up in maya, textured and rigged him myself. This latest class in intro to 3D talked about keyframe animation. was relatively easy to get him to do what i wanted him to do, but it still takes time. I wish i had the capabilities to make 3D animations independently, but I lack the knowledge and the pure computer power to make that viable.

Next post: Animatic update( and maybe more sketches)

I've started these blogs mainly to post my sketchbook stuff and other drawings over time. So here they are!

Junior Animation Thesis Progress I

2012-02-19T08:24:00.000-08:00

So we are well off into the new year and unlike 2011 I'm going to make 2012 really count. So I've been wanting to blog consistently for a while and i made some sketchbook dumps long ago and i want to continue that along with a couple other features that document my growth as an artist.

This is the first in my long term project progress documentation for my junior animation film final.

So the gist of this piece is about a man dealing with super crazy phenomena. My goal is to try to tell a very simple story with decent visuals.

I see a lot of great work out there with deep stories. Telling stories is hard, really hard. You don't get an understanding on how hard it is until you try it yourself. So I'm just concerning myself with the basics with this piece and i'll try to develop something deeper next year.

As for progress on this piece I have all my layouts done and a handful of key frames. There will be an update around tuesday time.

Weekly Sketches!

2011-02-16T09:08:00.001-08:00

Hello all! Here's another entry into the wonderful world of my artistic development.

I've been getting into a weird flow, doing most of my drawings while in art history. So these are not exactly daily sketches, but I do a lot of them. Hopefully I can get deep into my regimen and pump out multiple drawings per day. This week doesn't bring particularly nice drawings, or noticeable development, but one thing at a time I suppose.

In other news, I'm still poor as hell. I've been waiting for my work study checks to arrive in the mailbox and i'm getting dangerously low on funds. Hopefully they'll come soon. I bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. That's fun. FFXIV is still in a weird state, but its getting better.

So feel free to leave any comments or questions. I would surely appreciate it.

Hey all! Things are going great this new semester of school. Getting some paychecks, gettingdrawing done. I really need to start building up a portfolio. One of the problems i'm having is finishing things. I Just do not know how to make a polished piece, or maybe i'm not interested in doing so. In the last couple of weeks, I was struggling to find a way to dump all my sketches without blogger or picasa fudging thing up. I decided to edit them altogether on one page.

So check out what I've been doing and follow me on my journey to become a master draughtsman.

2011-01-18T09:54:00.000-08:00

Hello Friends.

So I'm going to upload a slideshow of the album that is supposed to house all my sketches. blogger.com was being kind of finnicky when it came to picture uploads and stuff. I might switch to another image hosting service or something. Next week I will have a better format for all this stuff.

So feel free to check this stuff out, like it or not like it and don't be afraid to let me know what you think. I'm going to be doing these updates so I and others can follow my development as an artist. These are pictures from my sketchbooks and doodles.

Super sketch dump. Week #1 part 1

2010-11-10T09:35:00.000-08:00

Here is a Sketch Dump. I took my computer to class with a wacom and did these life drawings in photoshop instead of on paper. I did this because I ran out of paper and wanted to see how this would handle. It handled okay, and these aren't the most impressive drawings. I do not have a scanner, so I couldn't upload my sketchbook or other figure drawings, i wish i could i really do. Enjoy what I can post though.

Summer is ending very soon

2010-08-06T14:36:00.000-07:00

Well into August now and I've already missed up on most of the goals I set. I'm terrible at summer really. At the same time I'm really good at summer too. I'm enjoying the relaxation that is going on up here in Jersey but can't shake the feeling that I should be doing more, especially when I have to keep up rent.

At least I'm doing a lot more drawing in my little book. almost done with it. I cant wait to move onto a new sketchbook. I'm going to treat my next sketchbook more like a sketchbook journal/note taker. I am also going to be good about scanning in pages to my computer. There are plenty of things to take notes about. Life, plans, projects, street fighter, FFXIV, details. Also going to be using the notebook to practice hiragana. Countless things.

Money is going to be an issue from now on. the only game i am going to be buying later this year is FFXIV. it pains me since starcraft II, DQIX, CIV V, LBP2 and all that other good stuff is coming out, but I have to have priorities in important things first. I need a job when i go back to Philly. I'm going to sign up to help the freshman move back into the dorms and make some quick buck. Then hopefully I can get a tutoring job somewhere somehow, since they seem to pay quite well.

The other thing I need to concentrate on for the rest of the summer is a portfolio. Its going to be hard to convince people to commission me based on my sketchbook alone. Its hard to get projects finished though, really hard. I think I have to dig deep on every project I do from now on and make sure it isn't a throw away project, and that they're projects that I have the will to finish.

I need some serious mental discipline.

LIST OF GAMES I STILL WANT

2010-07-15T23:56:00.001-07:00

DEMON SOULS

METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER

DRAGON QUEST IX

METROID: OTHER M

SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2

STARCRAFT II

FINAL FANTASY XIV: ONLINE

4 WARRIORS OF LIGHT: FINAL FANTASY GAIDEN

BLAZBLUE: CONTINUUM SHIFT.

That's all I can name off the top of my head at the moment. Most of those games are eastern developed. What can i say.

Super Final Fighterasy XIV

2010-05-27T14:01:00.000-07:00

It's been a while since I Blogged about anything. Mostly because life has been dull of late. There really is not anything to write about or Tweet about or anything. I am not sticking to my drawing regimen very well (although i'm getting back on track, with this new blog post as the first step).

My Life has consisted of vegetating at my girlfriend's home. We just turned in a job app. hopefully we get that. maybe. The things I've been doing on the day to day is playing SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV and FINAL FANTASY XI: ONLINE.

SSFIV in the morning has been my usual routine. I am doing okay, granted i'm using 'low teir' characters. Hakan and Makoto are crazy underrated. Chun is easy to win with. I am slowly getting better, and my stick execution has become pretty good after half a year of practicing. I still have a long way to go though.

Final Fantasy XI is my most favorite in the series. I'm sorry all you haters. It scratches a lot of my RPG itches. If i'm ever in the mood for playing an RPG, its easy to just load up FFXI and get some progress. I wish they could convert the game into a more flexible payment plan. At this rate i'm not playing over 40 hours a month. IF i could just pay for 30 or so hours instead of for the whole month then that would be better. Unfortunately, their servers don't work like that.

FFXIV is slated to become my new all time favorite game/final fantasy. Unfortunately, i am forced to play the PC version this fall. September 30th is the release date. Hopefully this computer of mine will play the game plenty fine. i dont mind if i have to play the game at a subpar quality, i can't wait to play it. Hopefully it doesn't cause my macbook pro to explode.

This weekend is EVO weekend. Friday will be a rather terrible day to watch. Saturday will be better. And Sunday I'm pretty sure i will plant my ass down and enjoy all the finals. Since the tournament is happening all weekend long, I don't know if i will actually vegetate in front of a stream for all 3 days. i'm pretty sure my girlfriend wouldn't appreciate it, but it is a highly anticipated event for me. I don't want to miss a single thread of the EVO 2k10 story. I'm jealous of my friends who will actually be at the event. I dont know if you could actually stay there all weekend long, watching fights. I hope they have fun

Vacation Week 1

2010-05-22T09:47:00.000-07:00

The Week has been pretty uneventful. It has mostly been about Video games.

It has been A Lot of Final Fantasy XI. Too much FFXI. I knew that I'd be getting back to this beloved game during the summer when I had the time. It has been pretty fun too. This is an 8 year old game now. That's a really long time. Some of the things the game does still surpass a lot of the new Massively multi-player online games that keep coming out. To Be honest most of my day gets devoted to this game, and I am not proud of it. I should be working or drawing, however, Summer is a long time to get the funds I need. Hopefully I'll get off my ass soon.

My Usual day Goes like this.

Wake up at about 11:00am to spend some time to play some Super Street Fighter IV. (makoto main)
My girlfriend wakes up later and we both get pulled into playing final fantasy XI
9 o clock PM we take a break from the grinding and finish the day with televison.

There are plusses and minuses to a lazy ass lifestyle. It is great not having anything at all to worry about. Yet I Hate feeling lazy and stuck in a rut. My parents don't want to work, but they have to. Do they realize however, that once they get off 'work' they just want to do more work, like fixing up the house or gardening. Human beings cant sit and do absolutely nothing. Even as I play FFXI, i'm essentially working on my character. Thats why sitting all day watching the television never gets anywhere.

In my case here I am keeping myself engaged in work. Its work that is getting me kind of nowhere though. I wouldn't mind keeping this lifestyle if I didn't have to worry about rent or if I didn't want things that costed money. What i have going on is rather nice though.

I am getting back to working on some projects that I want to post on deviant art. The Goal of these projects is polish and to teach myself about polish. Until then though, Street Fighter.

First year of College Done

2010-05-14T11:42:00.000-07:00

It is friday evening and I am back up in Newark NJ. Today was a great day, with not a care in the world. For the past 3 weeks or so, there was non-stop worrying going on in the back of my head everyday thinking about how to get things done for Uarts. That was all done on Wednesday at 11 am. After that it's been about moving out of the dorms and leaving Philly for a little bit.

My Final Critiques went rather well. My teachers liked me and gave me a good grade because they liked me. It was as simple as that. My main problems that I don't know how to polish and finish. But they all think i have a great attitude and a lot of potential. I'm Flattered.

My girlfriend's mother is a great lady. My girlfriend's whole family has been taking care of me and treating me like one of their own. But her mother gets crazy when she gets stressed. It is not anything special, I'm pretty sure the lot of you have plenty of experience with crazy stressed women. So while Moving out and packing up went according to plan, My girlfriend's mother makes that shit more tense than it actually is. But Everything is done.

NOW.

I have a few plans and goals this summer. I will list them off

PLANS

Get Money (Summer Jobs)
Do an extravagant portrait of myself and my girl
Finally Get back into the Gym

GOALS

FILL UP A SKETCHBOOK WITHIN THE SUMMER
DO A HUNDRED GESTURE STUDIES
DO A HUNDRED FIGURE STUDIES
DO A HUNDRED PORTRAIT STUDIES
GET BETTER AT SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV
LEARN A PROGRAM
POST AN ILLUSTRATION ON DEVIANT ART EVERY WEEK
MAKE MONEY

So the Plans are the stuff that is pretty much set in stone and probably wont deviate, i hope..

The goals is where the fun will be. I'll be blogging my continuing progress on everything and also talk about street fighter games and drawing, because thats what i'm interested in.

Fucken U-Haul and Uarts Film and Animation Screening

2010-05-08T11:07:00.000-07:00

I don't do things that are too crazy. Today was about getting up kind of late and then hopping onto Super Street Fighter IV. I'll talk about that in another post in detail. (god damned makoto..)

Today deals with checking out a U-Haul storage facility. I hate this place with a passion. I suspected the area to be quite nice and maybe full of hustle and bustle just like the center city, but its like once you go past north of the Convention Center here in Philadelphia, it becomes a Effen ghost town for a couple of blogs. Its really unsettling. Then you get past the Highway, and people start to show up again, but you could tell these all are bums, drug dealers. they all stare at you when you walk by them with an interracial woman holding your hand. The U-Haul itself was slow. They had one man on duty on the cash register. we were there for like an hour waiting around as he got through people. He usually cuts people off to deal with another thing. I am not looking forward to moving out of my dorms this week.

Uarts Senior Animation and Film Screening

So, being an animation major I went to this to see if this school was horrible or not. I expected really dumb ideas and things, but they turned out better than i expected them to be. The film stuff ranged from being high quality acting and direction, to odd lighting and other little bugs. The animations were actually pretty funny. there were two that was terrible, but the others just needed a little bit more concept development and better drawing.

Time to continue to crunch projects out.

Crunch Time

2010-05-07T09:08:00.000-07:00

Here at Uarts as an Art school, most of our classes require a final crit instead of a final exam. so instead of studying (we still have some studying to do for our liberal arts classes) we spend this lovely time polishing our projects to perfection. My crits are Monday-Wednesday of next week and I am desperately running out of time. It is a lovely time though, as there are a million things going on in my head. I've also finished a big essay and am glad to have that out of the way.

Here's a quick to do list.

finish making a wooden wing and polish it to perfection.
Redo a lot of drawings and polish them to perfection.
Finish editing video and BSing it to art.
Get ready to move out from the dorms.

In other news. i've cut my hair. i'll get you guys a before and after picture. This was about a week ago.

New to this.

2010-05-06T23:16:00.000-07:00

I am starting this blog in conjunction with my friend. To start off, I am a youthful and handsome young southeast asian american who is attending The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with my beautiful girlfriend. I like my ass some street fighter, final fantasy, dragon quest and all that good japanese developed stuff. I also like drawing and will be majoring in animation. My nails always get overgrown but they turn out so beautiful and quite utilitarian in the long run.
