A Businessman was deep in debt and could not see any way out.
Creditors and Suppliers were demanding payments. He sat in the
park, deep in thought, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him and asked, “I can see that something is troubling you seriously”.

After listening patiently the old man said, “I believe I can help you”.

He asked the man his name, wrote out a cheque and put it into his hands saying, “Take this money, meet me here exactly one year from today… and you can pay me back at that time”.

Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The businessman saw in his hands a cheque for $ 500,000… signed by Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in the world.

“I can erase my worries instantly” he realized. But instead, the man decided to put the uncashed cheque in his safe, knowing that it might give him the strength to work out to save his
business and to use this only in case of dire emergency.

With changed thinking he negotiated better deals, restructured his business and worked rigorously with full zeal and enthusiasm and got several big deals. Within few months, he was out of debt
and started making money once again.

Exactly one year later he returned to the park with the un cashed cheque.

As agreed, the old man appeared.

But just as the businessman was about to hand him back the cheque and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

“I’m so glad I caught him” she cried. “I hope he hasn’t been bothering you much. He always escapes from the mental hospital and tells people that he is Warren Buffet”, saying this she took the old man away.

The surprised man just stood there, stunned!

All year long he had been dealing thinking that he had half a million dollars behind him… Its not the money, real or imagined
that turns our life around.

10 Tips for a Successful Meeting With The Boss

Maybe you work one-on-one with the head honcho every day or perhaps you only get a face-to-face on the very rare occasion. Whenever you get the chance to sit down and have a meeting with the big guns, it's best to make it as productive as possible. It's also a chance to show your stuff and leave a lasting impression of who you are and what you have to offer. Here's 10 ways to help you do that.

Ask for an agenda prior to the meeting - If there’s not one available, offer to create one to help keep the meeting focused and on track. If the meeting is less formal than that, be sure the goal of the meeting is at least spoken out loud and agreed upon by both of you. Knowing the goal of the meeting you can then gather any appropriate documentation you might need to take with you. For example, if the meeting is to review your performance and discuss a possible promotion, you would want to bring copies of letters from clients complimenting you on your work, a table showing your recent sales and the impact they had on your team, etc.

Dress to impress - Not much needs to be said about this one except that it is more important than you probably think. Even if the normal dress at your company is fairly casual, step it up a few notches. You want your boss to take notice. You should look better than you do on a regular basis.

Take notes during the meeting - This shows that you are listening and that you plan to review what was discussed later. It also indicates that you are already considering the follow up that will be done after the meeting. The notes are handy for exactly this reason. You may come out of the meeting with a list of action items that you will need to remember to take care of in the future.

Show enthusiasm and positivity - Plain and simple. Just like you do for a job interview, put on the shiny-happy hat. Yes, it's true that sometimes you have to address a complaint, and in that case see number 5….

Bring solutions - Never enter a meeting with a complaint that you don't have at least one solution for. I know this is difficult but how are you going to enter a meeting with your boss, hand him a problem and then say "you work it out"? He's going to throw it right back to you and ask what you think the answer is. Go in prepared. In my opinion, you should take 2 or 3 possible solutions. If you are absolutely stuck, you must express that you've given the topic much consideration and ruled out several possible solutions in the process. At least then you've shown the effort.

Build rapport - Make a connection with your boss. This is going to vary for every situation but try to show a little personality. Most people in a leadership position have great social personalities. You just have to coax it out of them sometimes. If you know their favorite ball team, comment on how they've been doing. If you know they play golf, ask how their game is doing. If they like jazz, tell them about a new jazz band you heard recently. Do your research and be prepared for a little small talk.

Show vision - Don't be afraid to voice big ideas. Show your understanding (or curiosity) for the bigger picture. Don't limit yourself by sticking topics related only to your job. Show broad interest and they'll start looking at you as a potential future leader.

Ask clarification questions - Don't ever - and I mean EVER - say that you understand something if you don't. I can't stress this enough. It's like the episode of Seinfeld when George is working on a project for his boss and he has no idea what it is. George didn't hear him but then acted like he understood the assignment. Next thing he knew, he was in charge of something that was a complete mystery. Excellent episode. But also very true. People always nod and go along with things in a meeting thinking that later they can figure it out. Don't leave that office with questions. I have learned that the hard way. So now, I ask questions and then, before I leave, I restate what we've discussed and accomplished.

Send thanks - Either by email, mail or with a telephone call, let your boss know you appreciate the time they spent with you. Whatever is most appropriate. I see my boss everyday and meet with him everyday but if we have a special one-on-one, I make sure to say thank you at the end of the day to reinforce that I know it was out of the ordinary and I appreciate the time.

Follow up - If you leave with a list of action items, try to establish agreed upon dates when they should be accomplished. Then, follow through and meet that deadline. I used to work with someone who talked big during meetings and then never followed through. So meetings became pointless. Don't let this happen and think your boss won't notice. He'll notice. He might not approach the topic but he'll notice.

Stress is the inevitable by-product of the high-powered lives we live. Most of the time, there’s little we can do to even-out the pressure, right? Wrong, say stress-management experts. Your boss, for example, who manages to juggle work, home, and personal fitness, or super-productive employeeswho never seem to lose their composure. How do they do it?

Step 1: Make a list of all the things you have to do.

Take an hour out for yourself, order yourself a tall, sinfully-indulgent chocolate latte, and type out all the tasks you have to accomplish in the immediate future. All your activities, from business to leisure. Don’t write it out…typing will help you sort and order better. Write the completion deadline beside each task, and then sort tasks with the most urgent at the top.

Step 2: Remove to a separate list all the items that nobody but you can perform

This part of the list should contain high impact mainly work-related tasks that are your responsibility or those that require your expertise to perform. If you can delegate the task, it cannot make this list. These are things that will severely impact your business, or non-postponeable personal commitmentslike your partner’s birthday celebration. Let’s call this one List A.

Step 3: From the main list, separate important tasks that you’d hate to delegate, but which could be done by someone else

Be ruthless with yourself. Yes, it’s difficult to let hold of the reigns, but for the sake of your sanity, you must. Beside each task, put down the name of the best person you could delegate the task to. Then send each person an email with details about what to do, with deadlines and specifications if that makes you feel better. Then forget about these. Just let go. Let’s call this list, List Z.

Step 4: From the main list again, identify all low-impact items that you took up out of a sense of obligation, or to create goodwill

These have to go too, and you know this. Now compose a short email explaining that even though you offered to do the task, you now have too many things on your plate and can’t complete it. Offer to check back with the people concerned as soon as you have some time on your hands, but be firm about not being able to help out at the moment. Mail merge, hit send, and you have List Y off your hands. (You’ll hate doing this, but do it anyway).

Step 5: From your (much shorter) main list, separate those tasks that are of medium impact but non-urgent

These can be postponed to a later date, and should be. Check deadlines here, but chances are that the world won’t come to a stop if you don’t do these immediately. Voila, List X.

Step 6: Almost done!

The rest of the tasks on your main list becomes List B. Now check Lists A and B. Identify the tasks that would take less than an hour to complete and vow to finish doing those today itself! This way, you have fewer things to worry about, and you’ve already crossed at least one item off the list by the end of the day.

Yes, this was a lot of information. Yes, it’s easier to groan that you’re too busy for words, and groaning will get you more public sympathy than delegating some tasks and refusing others. Yes, you will lose a whole hour just making lists. But you know that these six steps make sense. It’s your life that you’re de-stressing and uncluttering, after all; you could just sit tight and go on complaining, or you could reach for that latte and your laptop…

ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.

For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321.

The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location.

IIT Kanpur student sets a record,With 73 lakh offer,

Agra's Karan Narain, pursuing M. Tech (final year) in computer science from IIT Kanpur, has set a new record in campus placement. He has been picked up by US company Pocket Gems for an annual package of $137,000 (over Rs.73 lakh).

This is the highest package offered to a Kanpur IITian and one of the highest in India so far.

"Pocket Gems is into mobile application development for Android and iOS. The interviews held in Kanpur were completely technical," Narain told IANS.

"I had some background in Android which could have appealed to them. It's a start-up, so has only around 100 employees. They've visited all the IITs and recruited a few students from each," he added.

Narain attributed his success to his schooling in Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Agra. "All schools are different and gave me a new experience and changed my world view for the better," he said.

The offer allows customers to enjoy free access to Twitter through web browsers and post Tweets, keep up with news around the world, and follow friends, celebrities, and others they choose to follow.

Furthermore, even without activating GPRS, Airtel mobile customers can sign up for Twitter or subscribe to SMS updates of specific users (via short code 53000) on their mobile phones for free during the offer period.

N Rajaram, chief marketing officer, consumer business, Bharti Airtel, says, "Today's discerning Indian customer is increasingly relying on the mobile device to access everything from e-mails and music sites, to social networks. In conjunction with this trend, we have introduced 90 days of free access to Twitter for mobile users in India on Airtel."

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

Candidate: Great! Even I had not heard of it before getting an admission into it ..

What happened is – due to cricket world cup I scored badly! in 12th.I was getting a paid seat in a good college. But my father said (I prefer to call him ‘baap’) – “I can not invest so much of money”.(The baap actually said – “I will never waste so much of money on you”). So I had to join this college. Frankly speaking this name – BabanRao Dhole-Patil, can at the most be related to a Shetakari Mahavidyalaya

Interviewer : ok, ok. It seems you have taken 6 years to complete your engineering.

Candidate: Actually I tried my best to finish it in 4 years. But you know, these cricket matches and football world cup, and tennis tournaments. It is difficult to concentrate. So I flunked in 2nd and 3rd year. So in all I took 4 + 2 = 7 years.

Interviewer : But 4+2 is 6.

Candidate: Oh, is it ? You know I always had KT in maths. But I will try to keep this in mind. 4+2 is 6, good, thanks. These cricket matches really affect exams a lot.. I think they should ban it .

Interviewer : Good to know that you want cricket matches to be banned.

Candidate : No, no… I am talking about Exams!!

Interviewer : Ok, What is your biggest achievement in life?

Candidate: Obviously, completing my Engineering. My mom never thought I would complete it . In fact, when I flunked in 3rd year, she was looking for a job for me in BEST (Bus

corporation in Maharashtra ) through some relative.

Interviewer : Do you have any plans of higher study?

Candidate: he he he.. Are you kidding? Completing ‘lower’ education it self was so much of pain!!

Interviewer : Let’s talk about technical stuff. On which platforms have you worked?

Candidate: Well, I work at SEEPZ, so you can say Andheri is my current platforms. Earlier I was at Vashi center. So Vashi was my platform then. As you can see I have experience of different platforms! (Vashi and Andheri are the places in Mumbai)

Interviewer : And which languages have you used?

Candidate : Marathi, Hindi, English. By the way, I can keep quiet in German, French, Russian and many other languages.

Interviewer: Why VC is better than VB?

Candidate: It is a common sense – C comes after B. So VC is a higher version than VB. I heard very soon they are coming up w it h a new language VD!

Interviewer : Do you know anything about Assembly Language?

Candidate: Well, I have not heard of it . But I guess, this is the language our ministers and MPs use in assembly.

Interviewer : What is your general project experience?

Candidate: My general experience about projects is – most of the times they are in pipeline!

Interviewer : Can you tell me about your current job?

Candidate: Sure, Currently I am working for Bata Info Tech ltd. Since joining BIL, I am on Bench. Before joining BIL, I used to think that Bench was another software like Windows.

Interviewer : Do you have any project management experience?

Candidate: No, but I guess it shouldn’t be difficult. I know Word and Excel. I can talk a lot. I know how to dial for International phone call and use speaker facility. And very important – I know few words like – ‘Showstoppers ‘ , ‘hot fixes’, ‘SEI-CMM’, ‘quality’, ‘version control’, ‘deadlines’ , ‘Customer Satisfaction’ etc. Also I can blame others for my mistakes!

Interviewer : What are your expectations from our company?

Candidate: Not much.

1. I should at least get 40,000 in hand..

2. I would like to work on a live EJB project. But it should not have deadlines. I personally feel that pressure affects natural talent.

3. I believe in flexi-timings.

4. Dress Code is against basic freedom, so I would like to wear t-shirt and jeans.

5. We must have sat-sun off. I will suggest Wednesday off also, so as to avoid breakdown due to overwork.

6. I would like to go abroad 3 times a year on short term preferably 1-2 months) assignments. Personally I prefer US, Australia and Europe. But considering the fact that there are Olympics coming up in

China

in the current year, I don’t mind going there in that period. As you can see I am modest and don’t have many expectations. So can I assume my selection?

IIM-A students bag Rs 1 crore package

AHMEDABAD: Cutting across the clouds of economic slowdown, the sun is still shinning over Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad. More interestingly, the shine is emerging from where the recession clouds looked the darkest - the financial sector.

In the last two months, three students of IIM-Ahave bagged Rs 1 crore-plus pre-placement offers (PPO) each from financial institutions. While two offers have been made by Deutsche Bank for their Singapore and London offices, one is from Barclays in Hong Kong. IIM-A sources said one of the offers is the highest PPO ever offered on the campus. Companies offer PPO to a student based on his performance during the summer placement.

Sources on IIM-A's placement committee said the PPOs have come at a time when everyone at campus feared that the economic gloom would be reflected in the financial sector.

However, PPOs proved otherwise. Sources said among the 380 students in the current second-year post-graduate programme in management (PGP), more than 50 have got PPOs. Many of these have come from retail and investment banking companies like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Nomura.

"Many such offers were made during 2009 when the average placement offer had come down significantly. The institute learned lessons and we were able to pull up the pay scales in 2010-11, but this year we fear them slipping again. However, the PPOs bring a sense of optimism but we are keeping our fingers crossed," said an IIM-A placement committee member.

However, there is apprehension that the tide can change anytime in the coming months due to the unstable global economic scenario.

"During the worst ever placement scene for IIM-A during 2009 slowdown, many offers were not honoured. This time though, we feel the recruiters were more confident while making PPOs. But, we have changed our placement strategy to lessen the slowdown impact," said IIM-A director, Samir Barua.

The institute is also looking at sectors and companies that are not known as traditional recruiters at the campus. "We are now expanding our reach and trying to get a diverse set of recruiters. We are looking at the core manufacturing sector and companies that haven't been approached," Barua said. The process for final placements will begin from January 2012.

Say NO to Railway Ticket Printing

Many a time we have panicked at the last minute to take a printout of our e-ticket and end up calling our friends/Colleagues/Siblings/Cousins and make them print a copy or run to the nearest Internet cafe & shell out 10 bucks just for a ticket printout or worst case handed over a fine to the TT for not having a copy of the ticket... right?

Well, there is a good news for all those who've gone through the above scenario. There is no need to panic or worry about the print ever again. The Indian Railways in an endeavor to Go Green has passed a rule stating that we no longer need to carry the printed e-ticket with us.

A screen-shot / details of the ticket on our mobile/laptop along with a valid photo ID is enough.

This move by the Indian Railway is sure about to save 3 Lakh A4 size paper every day, which is 10,95,00,000 A4 size paper every year.

Electronic Reservation Slip (ERS) - The printout in standard specified Performa containing reservation particulars, and instructions for use which can be used by the passenger along with the relevant authorizedIdentification, as travel authority for performing the journey.

What is difference between new and malloc?

Besides the basic syntactical difference:

malloc is a C function which will allocate the amount of memory you
ask and that's it.

new is a C++ operator which will allocate memory AND call
the constructor of the class for which's object memory is
being allocated.Similarly, free is a C function which will free
up the memory allocated.

but delete is a C++ operator which will free up the allocated

memory AND call the destructor of the object.

Rule 1. Assign the priority to the pointer declaration considering precedence and associative according to following table.

Where

(): This operator behaves as bracket operator or function operator.

[]: This operator behaves as array subscription operator.

*: This operator behaves as pointer operator not as multiplication operator.

Identifier: It is not an operator but it is name of pointer variable. You will always find the first priority will be assigned to the name of pointer.

Data type: It is also not an operator. Data types also includes modifier (like signed int, long double etc.)

You will understand it better by examples:

(1) How to read following pointer?

char (* ptr)[3]

Answer:

Step 1: () and [] enjoys equal precedence. So rule of associative will decide the priority. Its associative is left to right So first priority goes to ().

Step 2: Inside the bracket * and ptr enjoy equal precedence. From rule of associative (right to left) first priority goes to ptr and second priority goes to *.

Step3: Assign third priority to [].

Step4: Since data type enjoys least priority so assign fourth priority to char.

Now read it following manner:

ptr is pointer to such one dimensional array of size three which content char type data.

(2) How to read following pointer?

float (* ptr)(int)

Answer:

Assign the priority considering precedence and associative.

Now read it following manner:

ptr is pointer to such function whose parameter is int type data and return type is float type data.

Rule 2: Assign the priority of each function parameter separately and read it also separately.

Understand it through following example.

(3) How to read following pointer?

void (*ptr)(int (*)[2],int (*) void))

Answer:

Assign the priority considering rule of precedence and associative.

Now read it following manner:

One young academically excellent person went to apply for
a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision. The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score. The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "none".

The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?"
The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was
my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered,
"My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to
show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect. The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to
study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean
your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*
The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, hehappily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.
The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that
washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in
the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his
graduation, academic excellence and his future.
After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the
remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.
Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.
The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: " Can you tell me
what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"
The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning
all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked, " please tell me your feelings."
The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there
would not the successful me today. Number 2, by working together and helping
my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.
Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family
relationship.
The director said, " This is what I am looking for to be my manager.
I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who
knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not
put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.
Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his
subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's
performance improved tremendously
