HOW TO: get more catering orders for your restaurant.

To get more catering orders we must first understand who our customers are.
They are office managers/ admins who need to order for the rest of the employees. Let's put ourselves in their shoes and try to figure what problems they may face and how to make it easier to order from you.

Problems:
1.Not sure what to order: The user is new to your restaurant and they are not familiar with your menu.

2.Not sure how much to order: They are ordering for ALOT of people. It will be hard if they do not know generous your servings are.

3.Budget.

Solution:
Quik Catering! That's what we call it at GetQuik but basically it's just a catering option for customers.

The whole idea of Quik catering is to come up with a PER PERSON MEAL OPTION.

So at $X per person the customer will get:
appetizer
entree
rice/naan/noodles/other staples
dessert
*add or remove category from the list above depending on your cuisine type and cost

tips:
1.Have multiple product options in each category e.g. for appetizer there's 5 types of appetizers to choose from. Same for entree, dessert etc.

2.Multiple price point to fit their budget e.g.
at $9 per person you get
1 appetizer 1 entree
but at $10 per person you get
1 appetizer 2 entree and dessert
it's always good to have around 3 pricing points.

3.You can charge extra if certain dish are more costly to make e.g. you can charge $1 extra if the customer chooses a salmon dish instead of a beef, pork or chicken dish.

Advantages:
1. A chance to showcase your popular products!
2.Customer enjoy variety!
3.Customer have enough food to go around!
4.Customer stays in budget!

In a nutshell, the customer will be able to order from you with much ease. And that's how you can get more catering orders for your restaurant.

Now you've got your GetQuik website for your restaurant, what's next?

Well here's 10 ideas to promote the website so that you get the most out of your investment:

1. POS - If you have a POS (point of sales) system, just add "Order Online at (insert website URL).com" after the "Thank You" message in the receipt.

2.MENUS - Add "Order Online at (insert website URL).com" on your menus. This is effective for take-out menus in particular because some customers prefer to order online.

3.TAKE-OUT BOXES - Print "Order Online at (insert website URL).com" to your take-out boxes. *tip: you could use stickers instead if you do not print your own take-out boxes. This applies to plastic bags, utensil wrappers etc as well.

4.SIGNAGE - Display "Order Online at (insert website URL).com" at your POS register. You can include "Order Online at (insert website URL).com" on your window and main signages also.

5.NAME CARD - Add the website url to your name card. Web presence is healthy for your restaurant's image.

6.EMAIL - If you have a mailing list of your customers, let them know that they could order online!

7.YELP - Update your Yelp profiles to let your fans know that you now have your own website with order online capability.

8.MAPS - Update your Google Maps and Yahoo Local information with your own website URL. Makes it really easy for people to find you Google and Yahoo.

9.YELLOW PAGES - There's still people using this!

10.ADWORDS - Buy Google Adwords and link it to your website to reach an even greater audience.

Oh don't forget to tell your customers about the website yourself!

Twitter Case Study - Midpoint Observations

The #Pizza2Stanford tweet project has been fantastically weak. It is pretty hard to give away a free pizza after all. As Peter observed, we do not have enough followers, and more importantly we do not have followers who are "key influencers".

So to date, we have had a GRAND TOTAL of 6 qualified tweeters after 5 weeks of the program. We are trying a few experiments to see if we can get some more tweets before we wrap up the program.

At this point, it seems that Twitter is a very short tail dominated network. Those with a strong follower base are able to have a major impact with a few tweets. Tweets transmitted from the long tail seem to be failing on deaf ears. If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it...

Baby Varshavsky - Now Live

On August 25th, a new Varshavsky was introduced. Varshavsky baby 2.0 is doing well and came into the world at a fighting weight of 8 pounds 3 oz.

Nathan so far has proven to have superior sleeping and eating features versus Varshavsky 1.0.

Since Irina is taking her digital leave, we felt it was our responsibility to post a few pics of the latest edition to the Varshavsky lineup. The pictures are circa one week from launch date.

At the Stanford Vendor Fair

Peter and I spent the afternoon at the Stanford vendor fair. We were letting Residential Assistants and Residential Computing Consultants know about Pizza2Stanford.com.

We got to talk to more RCC's than RA's since the RCC's seemed to be required to attend this vendor fair.

We learned some interesting things at the vendor fair. Most of the RCC's and RA's we spoke are not on Twitter. We estimated that only around 10-20% of the folks we spoke with have a Twitter account.

It was a good event to promote the newly launched Pizza2Stanford site. For some reason, we were the one booth that was missing a sun umbrella, so we got pretty cooked. Thankfully it was shady for much of the event. The booth next to us was Stanford Housing Services. They had some interesting samples of bed bugs. Pretty gnarly.

Thanks to Jasmine, the event coordinator, for allowing us to participate. It was fun.

Adding Place Settings

Hello GQ customers,

We have noticed that many customers are adding notes specifying the number of place settings required for a delivery order. It's hard to eat pasta without a fork. Rather than guessing whether a customer needs place settings for an orders, we have incorporated a checkout option so customers can specify the number of place settings for an order.

Upon reaching the checkout summary page, you will see a field below the "NOTE" field and above the "NOTIFICATION EMAIL" field. You can select the number of place settings (usually in the form of napkins, plastic utensils and paper plates) you need for your meal. For the majority of our restaurant partners, these place settings come free of charge. If there is a charge for the place settings, you will the corresponding price listed.

If you don't need the place settings, then you leave the place settings at "0". The restaurant will appreciate the cost savings, and we can save a few trees.

LiveChat Experiment

Besides working at GetQuik, Qishan is an Internet powerseller. Qishan has experimented with a few different LiveChat services, and he likes Zopim the best.

We are trying it out for GetQuik. Qishan is taking charge of the service, but the rest of the GetQuik folks should be helping service the LiveChat feature shortly. We hope that GetQuik customers will find LiveChat a useful communication tool.

We realize having a LiveChat that is oftens times off-line may be frustrating, so we are still in an evaluation stage for the service. We will be adding some quick links, updating FAQ's, and posting GetQuik tips in our blog in order that we can quickly pass links via LiveChat for the more common questions and customer service requests.

GetQuik Tips - Adding On to an Order

Hello from GetQuik,

We would like to take this opportunity to provide some "best practices" for our customer for adding on to an order.

SCENARIO: Your original order information is fine, but you need to add item(s) to the order.

Adding on an order is pretty much the same procedure as placing a regular order.

STEPS:

1) Go to the restaurant menu for the original order.

2) Add ONLY the add-on items you need. Do not duplicate the items from the original order.

3) SERVICE: When you get to the SERVICE step for your add-on order, select the appropriate service for your order.

If the restaurant charges a delivery fee or requires a larger delivery minimum than your add-on order, you can select the TAKE OUT option. The restaurant will follow the service rules of the original order.

4) TIME: When checking out the order, it is best to set the TIME/DATE information to the SAME time date as the original order. If this is not possible, you can instead select the time ASAP option. The restaurant will follow the TIME/DATE of the original order.

5) NOTE: In the note field add a note for the restaurant such as: "THIS IS AN ADD-ON FOR OUR ORIGINAL ORDER 888123. PLEASE ADD THIS TO OUR DELIVERY!!"

If you are concerned that there will not be enough time to add-on before your order is prepared and delivered, you can contact GetQuik - support@getquik.com or 888-789-QUIK (7845) - or call the restaurant directly to confirm they can accommodate the add-on request.

If you prefer to have GetQuik process the add-on, you can also email your add-on to support@getquik.com, and we can take care of the add-on for you.

Tweet for pizza: week 1

It's Wednesday 5pm and up till now there's NOBODY who's tweeting out #pizza2stanford. NOT EVEN ONE. This baffles me. Who doesn't want free stuff? Is tweeting out #pizza2stanford THAT hard?

Here's a list of reasons that I think that might have caused this epic failure:

Not enough coverage - The twitter campaign is promoted on twitter ONLY. Not on our main GetQuik website, and not even on the micro-site pizza2stanford.com. This means that anyone who is not following us on twitter will have zero idea that the twitter promotion is going on. This brings us to the next two reasons pertaining to followers.

Lack of followers - We only have 155 followers. Is this number too low for a twitter campaign to take off?

Nature of followers -Our followers comprises restaurant owners, some of our friends, random people (most of them looking for sex) and other marketing entities (aka spammers). Seems like none of them are our target audience: customers! We have little or no followers who might be potential customer (someone who likes pizza and lives in the Bay Area!).

GetQuik Credit vs. Real Pizza - The prize is in the form of GetQuik credit instead of real pizza. I am wondering if people are getting turned off because they are getting some imaginary money instead of real piping hot pizza or cold hard cash. The prize in the form GetQuik credits may give the customer the impression that you need to purchase from GetQuik or have a GetQuik account to qualify for the lucky draw.

My phrasing of tweets - The way I phrase the tweets about the promotion may be misleading or too confusing for the followers. Oh well I am not the person with the best command of english but which part of FREE PIZZA do you not understand?

Prize not big enough - We've seen similiar campaigns using apple products as prizes that achieved phenomenal success so could it be that 1 pizza is not enough to motivate a person to tweet #pizza2stanford?

What we're going to do for week 2:

Ante up! - Since 1 pizza is not enough to motivate anyone to tweet, how about TWO PIZZAS? The prize from last week is going to rollover to this week and this week's winner takes ALL.

Microsite - We are going to promote the campaign on the microsite, pizza2stanford.com. Hopefully the twitter campaign can leverage on some of the marketing of pizza2stanford.com (we've pasted some pizza2stanford.com posters in Stanford and Palo Alto) to gain more exposure.

All said, we are actually not really dissapointed with the result. This is a case study and its success is far less important than what we (or you) can learn from it. The epic fail at the start has made us identify some of the traps that one may encounter in a twitter campaign and we are excited to see how this will evolve 10 weeks down the road. Or to put it simply in Ken's words: "0 tweets. Week 1. awesome"

A Case Study On Twitter

Case Study: Tweet for Pizza

This is the case study on the effectiveness of utilizing twitter as a marketing vehicle for local internet play and small businesses.

Seeing twitter as the emerging platform of choice for marketing, we are interested to know if a twitter campaign will have a positive impact on local internet play such as ourselves, GetQuik.

We DO NOT have:

-Global reach

-1 million user base

-Conventional marketing media (such as radio or television ads) to promote this campaign

We ONLY have:

-147 followers on twitter

-$200 budget

-0.5Ken + 0.5Peter working on this (we will be busy doing other stuff as well)

The campaign will be focused around a micro-website called pizza2stanford.com that we’ve created. With a new and almost unknown brand name, we can isolate and correlate the performance of the website directly to the effectiveness of the twitter campaign. This would be very relevant to many small businesses since most of them are in the same situation where they do not have an online presence and brand name.

The campaign will take the form of a lucky draw, where the GetQuik Administrator will pick a contestant as winner randomly. The campaign starts today (8/13) and the winner will be announced every Wednesday at 5pm-ish via twitter so participants are encouraged to follow getquik .The winner will win a so called “pizza” which is actually a $20 credit in a GetQuik account, useful at all the participating GetQuik restaurants (which, of course, include pizza places). The campaign will last for 10 weeks, with the last draw happening on the Wednesday that falls on 10/21 (which happens to be my birthday, nice).

To join the contest, a person must send out a tweet with #pizza2stanford included somewhere within the 140 characters. No purchase from GetQuik is necessary. Every valid tweet has an equal chance of winning the prize. However, he or she has to be in the Bay Area to win because GetQuik’s network is currently only in the Bay Area so the prize is pretty much useless elsewhere.

Due to this geographical constraint, we expect twitter’s network effect to be pretty much dampened. Besides the website pizza2stanford.com (which is GetQuik’s pizza ordering vehicle serving the Palo Alto community) and our own tweets from our twitter account (twitter.com/getquik), there will be no other form of promotion for this campaign.

Given such conditions we would like to find out:

-Is twitter suitable for local internet market play? Does it bode well with businesses that are localized for example small businesses?

-Is twitter by itself a strong marketing device that could grant a marketing campaign to have a life of its own?

And of course the $20 question – would anyone tweet for a pizza?

We will document the progress of this campaign on this Blog and share its findings with everyone. We will share the number of hash-tags tweeted, increase in traffic due to the promotion (if any) and increase in sales due to the increase in traffic (hopefully!).

Ok, it still needs a few tweaks. Still, not bad for a couple of days of work. Peter used WSIWIG web creation site WebSketch to put the site together. Peter is an HTML neophyte, but his design and antics are quite clever.

We were heading out to lunch at World Wrapps at the Mercado the other day. World Wrapps participates in both the GetQuik.com and the Waiter.com network. At their store, World Wrapps has a brochure rack with Waiter.com catalogs. While we were gathering our lunch, we were struck by the new cover design for the Waiter.com Spring/Summer 2009 catalog.

We are flattered that Waiter.com would decide to copy our brochure design. Waiter.com helped pioneer the restaurant agregation model, and has carved out a solid name for themselves in the Bay Area. We at GetQuik believe that utilizing a restaurant's service capability offers a far superior service and cost advantage over Waiter.com's full-service delivery offering.
