Never have I landed a job where I applied to a position online. Not even once. But I enjoy a great job, a comfortable paycheck and a career that I absolutely love. Maybe I’m just lucky like that. But I like to think there’s more to it than luck. In fact, I know there’s more to it than that.

What’s my secret? I get myself to the interview. Without that first interview, you will never land your dream job. It’s that simple. So, if you’re stuck in that hellish nightmare that a job search can be, how do you get selected for an interview? Here are a few things I’ve done (and some things I’ve noticed others do in my decade as a recruiting professional) to ensure my seat at the interview table.

1. Know what you want.

You telling me “I want to work in finance.” is a YAWN-AND-A-HALF. Meanwhile, “My goal is to work as an Investment Banking Analyst, specifically in M&A, in the Oil & Energy sector.” puts a smile on my face and shows me you have actually put some thought into your career search.

(Takeaway: If you don’t know what you want, nobody else will either.)

2. Know what you have to offer.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked by random strangers on LinkedIn or elsewhere whether I have time to spare for an informational interview with them. Although I’d love to spend the 15-30 minutes that these eager career hopefuls yearn for, I simply don’t have the time...unless, of course, it is glaringly obvious that the person is a dream match for a job opening I’m currently working to fill.

Some hiring managers may have the time. But more often than not, you need to open that introductory conversation with a bang. Knowing what you have to offer and being able to articulate that in your job search is critical. Prepare yourself a mission statement. Know it inside and out. Deliver it appropriately.

(Takeaway: If you can’t convince someone what you’re worth, you need to learn how to do so.)

3. Be creative.

One of my favorite personal hires in the last couple of years is a young guy who decided to be a little creative. “I won’t waste your time inflating my credentials...the truth is I have no unbelievably special skills or genius eccentricities, but I do have a near perfect GPA and will work hard for you.”, he wrote in a humble but fresh email sent to an investment banker. Now, that stands out!

Don’t be afraid to do things differently. Hiring managers get hundreds (if not thousands) of resumes, cover letters and requests for informational interviews. Those individuals who aren’t afraid to insert creativity into their approach are the ones we notice.

(Takeaway: Put yourself in the hiring managers’ shoes, and don’t give them a reason to yawn.)

4. Be bold.

Don’t be afraid to contact the hiring manager directly to introduce yourself and let them know what you have to offer. A quick search on Google or LinkedIn can render you the names of those individuals who have the power to sign your offer letter. Yes, that’s right. Somewhere here on the Internet is the name of the person who will determine whether you get your next job. Why wait for them to find you? Why not boldly find them and reach out directly? Life is too short to be anything less than bold – personally and professionally. What have you got to lose?

(Takeaway: Being bold beats being bored.)

5. Stay positive.

As you navigate the waters between previous and future jobs, it can be easy to become overwhelmed. Make sure you keep your energy levels up and your attitude elevated. Little things like daily exercise or regularly checking in with friends and colleagues during this time can work wonders for your spirit.

Staying upbeat and positive, while not always easy, is probably the most important thing you can do to land yourself “THE” interview. As Matthew McConaughey stated recently, it is a scientific fact that Gratitude reciprocates. I firmly believe that. If you’re living and breathing in a positive space, positive things will happen for you. I’ve seen it too many times to doubt that.

(Takeaway: Stay positive, even when the chips are down.)

If you haven’t landed your dream job yet, don’t worry. Take a few minutes to reflect on how you might incorporate a few of these action items into your game plan, and then go out there and get that interview!

What’s the #1 way to get hired?

What’s the #1 way to get hired? Let’s see. You can scour the web and apply to postings online. You can hit the pavement and start knocking on doors. You can cold call your way into your target companies. All of these are decent tactics. But, the NUMBER ONE way to get your foot in the door is to be referred by someone that the hiring manager knows and trusts. At some firms, the percentage of hires that come from employee referrals is a staggering 50% or more!

Being referred for a position is, hands down, the BEST WAY EVER to get hired. Not only does it get you on the fast track for open and posted positions. It also, more often than you would think, can open the door for positions that aren’t even advertised. Yes, many of the best jobs out there are not even advertised! Hiring managers simply keep their ears to the ground, and when they learn of a great candidate, they find a way to get the job opened. Of course, once you’re referred, you will still need to navigate the interview and follow up stages of the process. But you will be leaps and bounds ahead of those candidates who don’t have the golden ticket that is an employee referral.

So, how do you do you get referred for a job? Here are the easiest ways to get yourself referred.

1. What is it that you do?

Remember Chandler Bing from Friends? He had the same job for a decade, and yet none of his friends could ever remember what it was that he did. During a trivia game once, when asked to identify Chandler’s job, Rachel even called him a "transponster". If he ever needed to rely on one of those friends to refer him to a job, he may as well consider himself indefinitely unemployed. They would have been of no use to him in this capacity.

If you’re looking for a new job, the first and most important thing you can do is to have a narrative about what it is that you do. Then, make sure everyone in your network knows what that is. It sounds elementary, but if your friends don’t know what kind of career you’re suited for, how are they possibly going to help you find a job? You never know when you’ll come across someone in your circle that can help you land your next job. So, get some CLARITY around what you want, and put together your personal elevator pitch. Memorize it. Use it whenever and as often as needed. It works.

2. Network, network, network.

Regardless of the industry in which you’ve carved out a career for yourself, there are networking groups and events where professionals akin to yourself congregate from time to time. If you don’t know of any, look them up online. Every industry has them. If you can’t find one specific to your industry, consider local city or county networking events. Become a regular at their meet ups. Mingle, get business cards and use the “Here’s what I do” pitch from step 1. Get to know them, and make sure they get to know you.

3. Use LinkedIn. As a recruiting professional, I live and die by LinkedIn. As a candidate, I’ve used LinkedIn when changing jobs in the past. LinkedIn is a gold mine for anyone looking to further themselves professionally. Here are a few tips that should increase your effectiveness on LinkedIn.

a. Update your profile. In your professional headline section, update it to reflect something such as “seeking new opportunity”. But also make sure you keep your desired title or industry in this section as well, as shown below. This makes it easier for recruiters to find you when they are looking for someone with your skillset.
b. Get active in groups. Get involved in LinkedIn groups that are relevant to your industry or your geographic area. Join the conversation. LinkedIn groups are a great place to find jobs, industry articles and other professionals who may be open to networking with you. Groups are, in my opinion, the most effective way to use LinkedIn. They are easy to join, fun to participate in and they could very likely be your key to landing your next job.

c. Search for hiring managers. As you grow your personal network of connections on LinkedIn, you will exponentially increase the number of people in your network. Using the Advanced search tab, you can easily find managers in your field who may know of one of those “hidden” jobs I mentioned earlier. Get connected.

4. Give a little to get a lot. Many people recommend volunteer work during career transitions. I tend to agree. But, I also like to suggest that there are endless ways to give back to the world around you. In doing so, you will not only make someone else’s day better. You may also improve your own outlook on your current situation.

Volunteering at local charities is a great way to spend some of your “in between jobs” time. It’s also a wonderful way to expand your network. Another great option is to give back to your professional community. Have you seen an interesting article that your peers may find useful? Do you have an idea around how to improve something in your industry? Don’t hesitate to share this via social media or wherever you can. Contributing to others in this way not only serves to benefit the recipients. It also helps to keep you and your personal brand relevant during your search.

If you consistently make an effort to incorporate these 4 easy tasks into your daily routine, it will be that much quicker for you to find that one connection that is able to refer you to your next opportunity. Like I said, referrals are the most effective and quickest way for you to get hired. So, get yourself referred! Why make your job search harder than it has to be?

DEALING WITH REJECTION IN YOUR JOB SEARCH

I recently needed to fill 4 entry level finance positions. So I put together the job description and posted it online where prospective candidates could find it. Within a matter of days, I had 1488 applicants. There were 84 interviews scheduled, and a month or so later I had my 4 new hires. Talk about some tough odds!

My point is this... 1484 of the applicants didn’t get the job. If you’re searching for a new job, you probably already know that there are many more applicants than there are jobs available -even in this so-called recovering economy. So, the chances are at some point in your career search you will get the dreaded “thanks for interviewing, but we’ve hired someone else” email. Worse yet, sometimes you won’t even get a response from the company, and your rejection will come in the form of dreaded silence.

So, how do you overcome these stumbling blocks on your journey to happily employed bliss?

1. First understand you’re not alone. Like I said, 99.74% of the applicants for this one particular job did not get hired.

2. Take some time to figure out what the reasons for the rejection may be.

a. Having hired approximately 100 people per year for the last decade, I’ve noticed that many times rejections are quite frankly because the candidate applied to a position that was not a fit for their particular experience and skills. To overcome this, make sure you take the time to really understand what the position entails even before applying.

b. If you did get an interview and then got rejected, make sure to ask for feedback. If you get it, it could help you better prepare for future interviews. ONE THING TO NOTE: If you don’t get feedback, don’t harass the hiring managers or recruiting team. Nobody likes a stalker! Just accept that it didn’t work out, and move on.

3. Don’t give up! I can’t tell you how many times resilient candidates eventually get hired for the exact same position where they had originally been rejected. Setbacks happen. How you handle these setbacks is what is important.

4. Get active! Exercise is a great way to improve your outlook on your current situation. Studies have shown this over and again. Earlier in my career whenever I had to deal with a tough client or handle a challenging situation, I used to take a 10 minute walk in advance just to calm my nerves and clear my head. I still do this occasionally. It works!

5. Network, network, network. “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” isn’t just a saying. People who are better connected within their industry will consistently get better jobs. Period. If you’re looking for work and not networking within your industry, you are fighting a losing battle.

6. Stay positive. No one likes being rejected. It can affect our self-confidence and cause us to start thinking negatively. I’m telling you to ignore those negative thoughts and stay positive. You owe it to yourself! There’s nothing worse than seeing a candidate come in for an interview who bears the scars of previous rejections. Shake it off, and keep going!

Everyone has been rejected at some point in their career search. It’s how you handle it that matters. If I can leave you with one thought on how to handle rejection while looking for your next job, I’d borrow the words of Anne Lamott.

"I took a long, deep breath and wondered as usual, where to start. You start where you are, is the secret of life. You do the next right thing you can see. Then the next."

Having just wrapped up another season of campus recruiting, with all my college Seniors hired and ready to start their careers upon graduation next summer, I thought I’d take a minute to discuss something that has become an increasingly underwhelming trend.

DIMINISHING GRATITUDE

Everyone knows that after your interview, you’re supposed to send a thank you note. If you aren’t aware of that (or worse, if you are aware of that and still don’t do it), you may as well stop reading this right here and go back to some of my more remedial articles about the basics. Following up with a thank you note and a phone call are often a deciding factor in who gets hired. Period.

I’ve seen and heard many people debating whether the thank you note should be emailed or hand-written. Quite frankly, that’s not even a debate (Sorry if that offends any of you who are old school, but it’s the truth!). EMAIL IS THE WAY TO GO. Once you get an OFFER, then you can send a handwritten thank you note. Heck, then you can send them a fruit basket for all I care. But UNTIL you receive an offer, time is of the essence, and snail mail is good for nothing other than holiday cards and things like the Penny Saver (that place you may be looking for your next job if you’re not learning the Art of the Interview).

BUT that’s not what troubles me. What I’ve noticed more and more lately is the complete lack of follow up from candidates once they find out that they WEREN’T hired. The truth is, right now the job market is tough. So, companies can only hire a certain number of the candidates that get interviewed. That’s not the hiring manager’s fault, the recruiter’s fault or the candidate’s fault (that is, if the candidate did his or her best in the interview process). It’s a BUDGET and TIMING issue.

I’ve been in the talent acquisition space for quite some time now, and I can tell you that many companies don’t even bother with (or forget) to send a formal rejection email or make that tough call to tell someone they didn’t get the job. Those emails and calls are tough to make! So when you get that email or call, make sure you’re thankful…and be sure to let them know you appreciate the opportunity.

I’ll give you an example. I recently had to share the news with dozens of candidates that after multiple interviews, the hiring manager opted to go with another candidate. <<CRICKETS>> No response from any of them - that is, except for one guy who we’ll call Jordan. Upon receiving the “Thanks for interviewing, but we unfortunately decided to hire someone else." email, Jordan immediately took the time to thank me for my time, reiterate both his desire to get into the industry and his admiration for the company.

BINGO! I get these emails from time to time, and these candidates are always at the top of my list should anything else come up.

In corporate America, things change all the time: there could be a need to increase headcount, the person who accepted the offer you were hoping for could change their mind, someone could get promoted or resign. Any one of these things could happen TOMORROW….and they often do.

I’m not a gambling man. In fact, I think I’ve only bought about $10 worth of lottery tickets in my entire life. But you can bet the farm, when one of these events does occur (and they almost always do), Jordan and others like him who take the time to do this will be the first ones I call!

I know that I preach “attitude of gratitude” a lot. Consider this just an extension of that. Even when you don’t get the job or promotion you really want, taking the time to show some thanks will ALWAYS make an impression on whoever is on the receiving end of that.

There's more to life than Social Media Networking!

So I just got back from a Recruiting Conference in Las Vegas. As is often the case, most of the sessions’ topics were on social media. I’ve been playing in the social media and recruitment sandbox for a few years now, so much of the material was a review for me. But there were some good takeaways, and getting to spend 5 days in Vegas was fun (although in the future, I’m setting a maximum limit of 3 days for any trips to the Sin City…if only because, as a non-gambler, I get bored after a while).

But all that talk about social media got me thinking. Have we really shifted that much in our interpersonal relationships and our means of interacting with each other? Is that really a good thing? Well, I can’t debunk what I’ve already said a million times about how great Social Media is for your career and your job search. BUT I will say this…. SOCIAL MEDIA IS ONLY ONE MEANS OF NETWORKING…and quite frankly, if you’re not networking and interacting the old fashioned way (you know with handshakes, phone calls, hand written thank you notes, etc..), you are missing the boat.

Have we come so far that we’ve forgotten the basics? Here’s the deal. Whether you’re a baby boomer, Gen X, Y or a Millennial, networking is an absolute must! Here are just a few ideas to help you become a better networker.

1. Face-to-face encounters. In today’s increasingly “online” world, in-person meetings are becoming a thing of the past. We Skype, text, tweet, but we often skip out on the face-to-face meetings. Making the time to meet with a colleague, friend or client will make you stand out from the competition. If you’re looking for a job, trying to build your client base, or just trying to build a lasting relationship, don’t underestimate the power of the in person meeting.

2. Handwritten thank you notes. NO, I’m not talking about an email! When you get business from a client, or when you have an interview with a prospective employer, a $2 card with a nice thank you note goes a long way! Like I’ve said before, I get a dozen calls a day from people wanting my business and from candidates wanting to work for me. The ones who take the time to send a hand written thank you note ALWAYS STAND OUT ABOVE THE REST (This is true of any other personal gestures as well….I had a candidate send me a USMC Christmas ornament once, which was awesome! I hadn’t even mentioned the fact that I’m a veteran, but he must have done his research and found this out about me. Talk about him winning me over!)

3. Celebrate others! Remember their birthdays, their anniversaries, their kids’ names and make sure you let them know you care enough to remember. Often, you don’t need to do anything more than a quick phone call to congratulate them. Believe me, it goes a long way! People like to be remembered. If you’re the candidate who remembers my birthday and leaves me a voicemail wishing me well, I promise I will remember you.

4. Facilitate introductions. This is the most overlooked, but the most important of all networking tips. Taking the time to send an introduction or a job tip, etc.. to those in your network helps not only solidify your relationship with these people. It also brands you as a powerful networker. The Biblical adage “do unto others” is alive and well. If you want to get the inside scoop from your network on jobs and other professional news, you’ve got to be a giver yourself. Share what you know! People will appreciate and reciprocate.

Now, these are just a few examples of ways you can take your networking offline. I’d love to hear from you on other means you use. The Art of a Thankful Heart

The process of finding a new job can be grueling. You network, you scour the web, you apply for jobs, you may even cold call (if you are actually serious about finding a job, that is). Then, there are the phone screens, the in-person interviews, the 2^nd round of interviews, the waiting. It can be tough, I understand that! I see it all the time. But what do you do when it’s all said and done and you get the call or standard email saying

“Thank you for interviewing, but we’ve decided to pursue other applicants at this time.”?

In the last 24 hours, I’ve had to notify two individuals that they were not getting hired for two different, but highly sought after positions. Their responses, each so different from the other, gave me pause to…

THINK ABOUT THANKS.

The first gal got the call telling her we had opted to hire another candidate. Her response was just downright rude! After the call, she sent an email to several people on the team using ALL CAPS on certain words to prove her point about how UPSET she was with us, how our PROCESS was SO AWFUL, etc...even though just minutes prior I had told her we would absolutely consider her should something else open up. Well, obviously once I got that response, she’s in my “DO NOT CONSIDER” pile from now until eternity…or until I get distracted from thinking about thanks and start thinking about a softer heart or forgiveness perhaps.

The second guy who had received the news via a voicemail, called me back and said “Thanks so much for the call. I really appreciate all your efforts throughout the process. If anything ever changes, please let me know. Thanks again!”. I was floored! And you can believe me, the very next chance I get, I’m going to hire this guy! Most candidates don’t even respond to emails or voicemails telling them they didn’t get the job. And I suppose that’s ok. But if you really want to stand out in the job market, you should. Just pick up the phone, call the people you interviewed with, and tell them thank you. It goes a long way.

I’ve heard it said that there is an art to saying thank you, and I have to agree. However the “art” of it is “doing” it. Whatever the situation (if you got the offer or didn’t, whether you got the raise or the promotion or if you didn’t), a thankful heart AND MORE IMPORTANTLY a thankful attitude that others can see, will work wonders.

Cold Calling is a MUST for today's job seeker!

There are few things most people, job seekers included, dread more than cold calling. But if you are serious about landing yourself a new job, COLD CALLING IS A REQUIREMENT. Believe me, my first recruiting job was 100% commission based and picking up that phone (which suddenly seemed to weigh 50 pounds) made me sick to my stomach at first. But it is something I had to overcome. So do you if you want to be successful in your job search.

The biggest reason most of us don’t cold call is we’re afraid. None of us wants to be rejected. But if you don’t take the shot, you’ll never make the shot as they say. As an employer, I expect candidates to take the time to find me and call me about jobs they are interested in.

If you want the job, you’ll find a way to reach me.

But HOW? You may be asking yourself. Here are a few tips to help you get over your fears and stand out in the crowd of job seekers.

1. Write a script with your pitch· Draft an outline of what you want to get across. Then, rehearse it (in front of the mirror, on the phone with a friend, leaving yourself voicemails and replaying them to hear how you sound, etc..) Make sure you’re concise. There’s no need for this to be longer than 30 seconds initially, one minute at the very longest. Be sure to sound energetic and upbeat. Often this can be accomplished by simply standing up while on the phone. I personally used to do 50 pushups before starting my day of cold calling. It got the blood flowing, and it made my fears of rejection seem to disappear.

2. Get past the secretaries and other gatekeepers. Most higher level hiring managers don’t answer their own phones. So, how do you get past their administrative staff? Be bold but friendly. (example “Hello, my name is Jason Phoebus. Could you please tell me the name of the manager involved in the hiring for xyz position?” Or you could ask “Hi, could you please provide me with the correct spelling of the name of the manager hiring for xyz position?”) Both are effective. Don’t hang up the phone until you at least have the name of the person you need to connect with. One of the best ways to avoid these gatekeepers all together is call very early or late in the day (before the secretary comes into the office, or after he or she leaves).

3. Leave compelling voicemails. I get 10 or more voicemails a day from strangers pitching their services or candidates trying to get an interview. I delete 9 of them usually. Why? They bore me to death and don’t have anything compelling in them. BE BOLD “I understand you’re hiring for a Staff Accountant. I’d like to share with you how I might be able to join your team and have an immediate impact on your bottom line.” Or “I understand you’re hiring for a Software Developer. I recently just led a project of this (insert really cool project you have worked on). I’d love to meet with you to share how I believe my skills might be able to increase your firm’s standing in the tech space.” Whatever it is, you should practice your voicemail over and over. Leave your friends your voicemail, and ask for feedback. Leave yourself a voicemail. You’ll be surprised how awful they sound at first. But with a little practice you’ll be a pro in no time!

A couple other pointers:

o Always speak clearly and slowly.

o Repeat your name (even spell it if it’s like my last name where people have a hard time understanding it) twice.

o Repeat your phone number twice.

o Thank them in advance for their call back.

o Let them know you’ll be happy to call back in a day or so if that works better for their schedule (and if they haven’t called you back in a day or so, KEEP YOUR PROMISE and call them back)

Be a better detective. Get a better job.

As is often the case, I’m helping someone near and dear to me find a new job. We’ve put together a solid resume and are now at the stage where the marketing can really begin. And then he asks me… “Why wouldn’t I just apply online or send my resume to the recruiter? Why would I send to the hiring manager?” I thought to myself… “HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN ME?” But instead I decided to use this moment as an opportunity to train my buddy.

I’m a Recruiting professional but my educational background is in marketing, so perhaps it’s my marketing background that makes networking seem, to me, like the natural way to find a new job. Or, perhaps it’s because I’m also a good detective.

When I was about 12 years old (and a huge fan of crime tv shows, Magnum PI in particular), I read a news article about a woman who had gone missing in my hometown. I got up the nerve to call the local police station, put on my deepest “grown up” voice and I offered my private investigation services to help them find her. They naturally turned me down, when my parents found out they were mortified, but I really wanted to be a PI! And now I kind of am one.

My current and previous two jobs are jobs I found (and they have all been wonderful!) on LinkedIn and on Facebook. I NEVER APPLY TO POSITIONS ONLINE (until I have already spoken with someone at the company).

TIP #1 Everyone always asks “How?”. The biggest challenge people have is not knowing where to find the hiring managers’ names and contact info. Here’s what you do. First of all, LinkedIn is a great place to see who works at your company. You can search an employee’s (or hiring manager’s) employment status on LI by “current and past”, “current” or “past”. I recommend using “current and past” to get more results.

TIP #2 You can also find names of people at companies using other sites such as www.zoominfo.com and www.prnewswire.com. ZoomInfo is not a social networking site, so you can often find info there you won’t see on twitter, LI or FB. PRNewsWire is a great site for press releases which can give you current, updated news about companies you are interested in.

TIP #3 Also check out sites such as GlassDoor.com and Facebook. Or (and here’s a tip I usually reserve for my best clients), find out the email domain of the company that you are looking at and do a Google search with the string. Meaning if the company domain is @abc.com, go to your favorite search engine and type in “@abc.com” using the quotation marks as I have here. This will often give you additional names and contacts that aren’t listed anywhere else. Why? When executives and hiring managers go to conferences or events, they often register using their email addresses. The people who put on the conferences usually keep a list of attendees and for some reason, they usually publish this on their websites.

Once you find the names:

· Craft a personal email

· Write down and prepare a dynamic voicemail message

· Have a talk track ready (in case they actually answer the phone when you call)

· …and START NETWORKING YOUR TAIL OFF!

Interviews are a two way street. When I’m interviewing someone for a certain position, I always have my predetermined list of questions ready to go. I also have follow up questions prepared for when the interview takes unexpected turns. And I always leave the interview knowing what I need to know about the candidate to determine whether or not I will move forward with them.

If you want to stand out in the crowd, you need to BE PREPARED. I can’t tell you how many candidates I have interviewed who had very few or even no questions prepared to ask me. It’s honestly a shocking number! If you’re interviewing for a new job, you need to leave your interview knowing as much about me, my company and the position you are interviewing for as is humanly possible.

How do you prepare for this? Well, first and foremost you should do your due diligence and research my company. Find connections on LinkedIn who work here and reach out to them for insight. Do a Google search or check out www.glassdoor.com to see what our employees are saying about us. Get to know the company as much as you possibly can before ever accepting an interview invitation. Do some research on the industry. Look up which companies are competitors of the company you’re interviewing with and get to know the key players in the industry.

ASK QUESTIONS. If a candidate doesn’t ask me questions, I don’t consider them a strong candidate…PERIOD.

Here’s a quick list of my favorite questions candidates ask:

1. How would you (or my new boss) determine my success once I accept this role?

2. What is the career path for someone coming into this role?

3. If you were me, what would you do to prepare yourself for success knowing what you know about this position, this team, my new boss, etc..?

4. How do I rank compared to other candidates you’ve interviewed?

5. Is there anything about my background that concerns you or that you need more clarification on to make your decision?

These are just a few. But if you ask smart questions, you’ll get good answers. So many candidates ask “What’s the next step?” type of questions. But most never ask the tough questions like “Is there anything about my background that concerns you?” or “How do I compare to the others you’re interviewing?”.

I think it’s human nature. Perhaps you’re scared to hear the answers, perhaps you’re not confident enough to ask the tough questions. My advice to you is GET OVER IT! Make it a point to ask solid questions so you will truly know everything you can know about the job. You’ll come across sounding smarter than the average guy, and you’ll most likely get invited to the next round of interviews….or perhaps even get yourself the offer!

I have a confession to make to you all. I took too much of my own advice and landed myself a great new job which has, unfortunately, pulled me away from staying in touch with you as often as I should have. But I’m back, and I have even more tips for you as you navigate your job search.

So…You think YOU’RE special? is a blog series dedicated to sharing with you easy ways you can stand out in the droves of applicants seeking the job you were destined to have.

So…You think YOU’RE special? Really!? I interview about 1,000 people every year. Year in, year out….whether I like it or not. If you were one of those 1,000 candidates I interviewed, do you think you would have stood out? Let me ask you that in another way…..

o Did you have the best pressed suit?

o Were you the guy with the most accomplishments?

o Were you the girl who shared my alma mater?

o Did you have the best haircut?

o Did you have the best smile?

o Did you have the strongest technical knowledge?

If you didn’t have ALL of these things (and more), the chances are you didn’t stand out. No matter how unique our backgrounds are, how many significant things we’ve accomplished, what our educational credentials are, etc… we’re all very much the same in many ways. That’s a good thing…and a bad thing. The reason for the latter is because if we’re all very similar, HOW CAN YOU STAND OUT? You want your interviewers to remember you! Heck, you WANT them to HIRE you! They can’t hire you if they forget you moments after your interview.

This is a multi-set blog I’m bringing to you, but this first tip on how to be remembered is this –

SEND THANK YOU NOTES

This evening as I was walking the dogs, my phone alerted me of a new message. I looked quickly while juggling the dog leashes and dodging the cars driven by the slightly tipsy drivers leaving their various happy hour engagements, and I saw a “Thank you” email from a Berkeley student who I recently interviewed. It reminded me, yet again, how important it is to say thanks after your interviews. Here’s why…

If your interview was great – and you send a thank you note, it will confirm and validate the hiring managers already good feelings about you.

If your interview was decent – and you send a thank you note, it might be that one thing that tips the scale in your direction and gets you the offer instead of that joker with the better suit and the whiter teeth who interviewed right after you.

If your interview was awful – and you send a thank you note, it may not get you the job right now. But it sure as heck will keep you at the top of the list should the top candidate get the offer and decline…or if another position comes open, and your thank you note is sitting on their desk they just may call you. Who knows, they may have even forgotten how botched your interview was and call you just because your name (and thank you note) are in front of them.

Trust me. This works time and time again. “Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart.” (Seneca). Religions and self help programs have stressed GRATITUDE as being one of the QUICKEST ways to attaining peace and serenity. I’m here to tell you, they’re right! Being THANKFUL will bring you peace, serenity AND it will quite possibly be the one thing that gives you the leg up so you can kick the other guy’s butt in the job market and GET YOURSELF A JOB OFFER!

Say thanks, and say it often…

Today's topic is MOVING THE ENERGY, brought to you by guest contributor Jamie Craw.

As someone whose profession it is to find the match between candidate and opportunity on behalf of others, I believe I am the different side of the same coin as a job seeker. As someone who has spent the better part of her career speaking with job seekers, candidates, and persons in transition, I feel we are a kindred spirit and I identify wholeheartedly with the plight, the frustration, and pure joy of the rollercoaster of job searching and finally finding the perfect fit. So what advice can I impart to you that will get you a job? The answer may surprise you.

There is very little we can control when we are looking for a job, and same as in life, the only thing we have any power over is ourselves. You may think this is not the time to pursue your creative side, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Now is the time to do all the things you said you had to wait for, the things you have put off because you don’t have enough time, or you should be looking for a job. NOW! Now is the time to move your energy around, block out the naysayers, and sign up for a painting class or take a road trip or strike a yoga pose.

The thing is, we are all a ball of energy, and sometimes our energy gets stuck. It may be so deep inside of us, a passion we have been putting off for so long, that it has made an impasse in the very depths of our psyche. And somehow, it is manifesting itself as being stuck in your job search and you don’t know where to go.

The biggest disservice we do to ourselves is to deny our creativity. It is only when the energy starts to flow and when you try something new that the paths of your career and life start to open up infinitely. If you’ve been feeling a big move or change is needed, now is the time to make it. If you are tired of the view outside your window, now is the time to change it. Change is good, it is healthy and it is imperative for growth.

You may find that taking a class opens the door to meeting your future boss or the contemplation during yoga opens your mind to new possibilities and a road trip might unveil your dream home and the perfect job around the corner. You don’t know until you try and you will answer all of your questions if you stop thinking about all that you can’t do, or are limited by, and start pursuing your dreams, one by one. I believe your career is holistic and a reflection of your whole being. When you are fulfilling your personal goals, your professional ones are sure to follow.

The Art of the Job Search (What's your process?)

What’s your job search process?

As an HR leader, I occasionally get the opportunity to review corporate recruiting processes to ensure that we are being as efficient as possible while also being compliant with employment laws, etc. As I’m currently going through this again in my position, I thought to myself “What about the process for job seekers?”. So many people go blindly looking for a job that they forget to put together a map and a process for finding a job.

There’s an art to finding a job, and having a process mapped out will help you immensely! Here are a few suggestions to get you started...

Take a Personal Inventory
You’ve got to take some time to reflect on your skills and your career ambitions so you will be able to align them with your job search. For me, I would have to take into account that I want a position that allows me to work with people. I would also make note that I would want to work in an organization that offers me unlimited room for career growth. When you are taking inventory, you should consider your values, your interests and your skills. Then be ready to discuss these with potential employers. You should also put together interview questions that you are able and ready to ask employers that will help you determine if the organization and the position you are interviewing for is a good fit for you.

Involve Others
Next, you MUST have a support network. The people in your life are invaluable to you when it comes to career search and networking. Talk to your friends, your family, coworkers, coworkers from previous jobs, the teller at your bank, the ladies in your bridge club, etc.. Never underestimate the power of networking and letting your network know what you’re up to! I personally have kept in touch with most people I’ve worked with over the years. You never know when they may be able to help you out.

Organize Yourself
If you’re not organized, you need to be. Looking for a job can be overwhelming. It can be disastrous and futile if you don’t keep track of what you’re doing. Get a binder, make an Excel spreadsheet, whatever it takes. Keep track of who is in your network, where they work, who they know, what your activity with them has been to date, etc.. Follow up with them regularly. Things change all the time. Make sure you’re keeping up with your network.

Stay Upbeat NO MATTER WHAT!
Make a commitment to yourself early on (or better yet, do it right now!) that you will stay true to yourself in the process and ALWAYS stay positive. If you get turned down for a position, don’t take it personally. Learn something from it. Thank them anyway! I can’t tell you how many times a candidate I’ve interviewed didn’t get the job initially. But they were thoughtful enough to thank me for my time. When things didn’t work out with the candidate we were going to hire, you better believe I knew exactly who I was going to bring back in for consideration! Be yourself, and do whatever it takes to stay positive!

Whiny Job Seekers and Shy Networkers--WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND HERE?

Have you ever heard “It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know.” or “It’s all about networking.”? I recently overheard an acquaintance of mine (well, more like I saw them broadcasting the news across Facebook…Gotta love that!) whining about not being able to find a job. He was frustrated because he felt that he just didn’t know the right people to get a foot in the door somewhere…anywhere. He had been applying for jobs online for months, scouring Monster and Careerbuilder and other job sites looking for a job to no avail.

I know I’ve told you all before, but I have never been hired for any position by applying to it online or sending in my resume. And yet, I seem to always have a job…and they’ve always been pretty darn good jobs! “How is that possible?” you might be thinking. The truth is… (drum roll please) I just love to connect with people, and I do my best to make sure they remember me, and I try to stay in touch with my contacts over the years, and I try my best to be a positive person, and…the list goes on and on.

What about those of you who aren’t so eager to meet others? How can you become a better networker if you’re a little intimidated or shy? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Get over yourself! Yes, I said it. Lots of us are introverts naturally, but we know that in order to get ahead we have to wear our “extrovert” hat occasionally. Pretend like you’re not shy…like you’re an actor playing a part. Don’t be fake, and don’t try to be the life of the party when you’re not. But ACT like an outgoing person would act. You’ll be surprised at how far this will get you. AND it will ease your nerves in the meantime.

2. Introverts make the best networkers (TRUST ME) because they are excellent listeners. Cherish your listening skills and listen to others genuinely. While the “type A” folks are busy jacking their jaws about themselves, you will be getting ahead of the curve by learning invaluable information about those you’re networking with. Listening is powerful.

3. Be prepared. Bring your business cards, a pen, something to write on. Make sure your teeth are flossed, that your breath isn’t atrocious and that you’re presentable. Wear clothes that are appropriate for the situation but also COMFORTABLE. I can’t tell you how annoying it is to be in a professional or networking situation and be in clothes that don’t feel right. UGH!

4. Know why you’re there. Have a goal, whether it’s to meet 3 new people or to find someone there who works at one of your target companies or to find out more details about the latest development in your industry. Don’t leave until you’ve met the goal.

5. Lastly, KEEP IT UPBEAT! This means SMILE big and often. In no circumstances should you complain or come across whiny. NO MATTER HOW DESPERATE YOU ARE, don’t let ‘em see you sweat! Networking events usually don’t last too long. Get in, accomplish your goals (your reasons for being there) and get out.

Getting Hired in today's economy

How can you stand out among so many candidates?

People ask me all the time “How can I stand out as a candidate when there are SO MANY people going after the same position?”. I can tell you that here in Atlanta (or most major metropolitan areas of the country), if I post a position on any of the job boards or Craigslist for an Administrative Assistant or similar position, I can count on having 500+ resumes in a matter of 24 hours. That is A LOT of resumes! So standing out among the crowd is CRITICAL to getting hired in today’s economy.

So, what can you do? Well, you already know I believe that networking is the BEST, if not the ONLY, way to get your new job. I personally have never EVER been hired for a position that I applied for. So, what do I know about getting hired in today’s economy, you might be thinking… WELL, I've only ever found positions by networking and most recently on LinkedIn and Facebook…just by paying attention to my network. It really works!!!

BUT if you’re newer to a community, or if you have a hard time networking, there are a couple other things I recommend you do to ensure you stay at the top of that pile of 500+ resumes.

1. Be Prepared. Do you know what a SWOT Analysis is? If not, you should! Here’s a link to some SWOT templates. http://www.businessballs.com/swotanalysisfreetemplate.htm You need to be prepared. Do a SWOT analysis on yourself. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is critical to knowing yourself. Do a SWOT analysis on the company you are interested in. Showing the company that you have prepared for your meeting with them by researching the company and understanding their strengths, weaknesses, etc… will make you STAND OUT in the crowd for sure!

2. 30/60/90 Day Planning. One of the best books I’ve read is “The First 90 Days”. It talks about how you prepare for stepping into a new role. Put together an idea of what you plan on accomplishing in these first 90 days in your new position. Again, this shows solid forethought and consideration for the company….rather than just wanting a “job”, you come across as a thought leader who will more likely have a good impact on the organization you are applying to.

3. “Kudos” Book. Keep every single “attaboy” email or note you get from your boss, your coworkers, your peers. Get recommendation and endorsements on LinkedIn. Make a folder of these “kudos” and keep them handy. This does two things:

-Makes you remember that you’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and doggone it! People like you! Keep yourself reminded of your value every day!

-It also can serve as a recommendation when meeting with employers. If you go to a LinkedIn profile that has 0 recommendations and compare it to another that has dozens of recommendations, which one do you think the employer is more likely to call? Believe me, we check out your LinkedIn and Facebook profiles. You can stand out for the good or for the bad. It’s your choice.

4. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. If you get a response telling you that they gave the job to someone else, thank them. If you get an interview, thank them. Handwritten notes are the best, but email is fine too (and much faster). Whatever you do, EVEN IF YOU IGNORE EVERYTHING I’VE JUST TOLD YOU, Always remember to say THANK YOU! It is the single most effective thing you can do in the process.

Add these to your repertoire and you are guaranteed to fare better in the job search process!

Don't bother submitting a cover letter without these 6 things!

I get questions from candidates all the time about cover letters. Whether or not you use a cover letter depends on the situation and is entirely up to you. In many cases, it is not necessary. But often an employer may request one. I personally use a cover letter whenever possible. Either way, it’s a personal decision. If you are going to use a cover letter, there are a few things you need to make sure you are mindful of:

6 Steps to a Powerful Cover Letter

1. Address it to a person (you know, with their name on it!). Do YOU like getting mail addressed to “Current Resident”? The same is true for whoever is on the other end of that submit button. Make it personal! If it’s not readily available, call the company, Google them, or do a LinkedIn search. At least try to find who you’re sending it to.

2. Make sure you grab their attention in the first paragraph and show confidence…but not arrogance.

3. Focus on your key accomplishments, NOT your job duties!

4. Keep it to less than a page. Recruiters and hiring managers don’t want to read a book about you. They want sound bites that spark their interest and “WOW” them!

5. Always include your Unique Selling Proposition

6. Include a “Call to Action”. Make sure you ask for the interview. It’s the old sales adage “ABC” Always be closing, and always be selling. You’re up against too many candidates to leave an open ended letter on the table.

While these are all important, the two that seem to give people the most trouble are the KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS and the UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION. Key accomplishments are a mystery for so many, and I’ve never quite figured out why. No one else in the world knows what yours are. So, it’s totally up to you to remember what you’ve accomplished. Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you’re having difficulty coming up with your examples.

Key Accomplishments

How have you done your job better than others in your department?
Did you take on any special projects? What was the outcome?
Did you go above and beyond?
Did you have higher sales numbers than the next guy?
Did you find a way to save the company money?
Did you get promoted often?
Did you win any awards, such as Employee of the Month?
Quantify and Qualify. Numbers matter! Include things such as:

Increased sales by 30% in FY11
Led a team of 12 Client Service Reps
Reduced company expenses by 12%

By answering these questions and recalling what you’ve done, you should be able to come up with some key accomplishments. Believe me- it can make a huge difference! By adding a couple of these to your cover letter (and hopefully some of them in your resume as well) you will also be subliminally adding them to your subconscious…. So the next time you get asked “Tell me about your accomplishments.”, you won’t be caught off guard.

Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

I’m a marketing professional who just happens to be in the recruiting industry. So let me share this marketing term with you. A Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is an advertising term that translates nicely into the job search. It is the one thing that makes a product (or in this case, you and your resume) different from any other. What is something that makes you unique? What makes you stand out above all the rest of the candidate competition? What do you bring to the table that no one else does? When you determine your USP and build it into your strong cover letter, you will immediately have a tangible advantage over the competition. For example, mine might be something like this:

“Because of my unique combination of experience in the fields of marketing and human resources, I am able to truly uncover hidden talent and attract them to my organization. Because of this, my company saves time, money and ultimately hires better employees”

So there you have it! Remember these tips the next time you create a cover letter, and you will be far more likely to get a call back. Like an actor who gets a casting call, the show must go on. Will you be ready to take the stage?

Why are some people more successful than others?

What makes some people more successful (in their job search or just in general) than others? In all my years of recruiting, I have consistently seen the following traits show up in each and every successful person. I call it the CPA (Clarity, Perspective, Accountability) approach to reaching your dreams. Take a look and imagine what an impact it will make when you implement these into your job search...or in your daily life.

First you’ve got to have CLARITY. Being goal oriented and future focused about what you want is the single most effective thing you can do when it comes to reaching your goals or finding your dream job. How many people do you know who carry around dreams for most of their lives without ever realizing them? Sadly, that is a lot of people in this world. There would be nothing sadder than being at the end of your life and realizing how many dreams you left on the table. And for what? Understand what you want (also known as your values), align your actions to your values, and set yourself a deadline.

A little PERSPECTIVE goes a long ways. Put your ideas on paper, align them with dates into your calendar or in your diary, state your goals out loud as often as you can. Stating your intention and your goals out loud causes your subconscious to start accepting them as truth, and the added value of bringing ideas from your subconscious mind into your conscious mind can be tremendous. Be realistic about where you are, what your strengths are, what your areas of opportunity (also known as weaknesses, but I detest that word) are, and be realistic about where you want to go. Understand that the economy or your boss or your spouse are outside of your control. Realize that you and only you are responsible for whether you reach your goals.

Make yourself ACCOUNTABLE to someone else. Have you ever had a dream or ambition to do something that you kept to yourself and never ended up getting it done? Or maybe you just procrastinated a bit? Don’t worry. We’ve all done this. The thing is, though, when you make yourself accountable to someone else in the process, you are stating aloud your intentions and this is HUGE! Accountability will help keep you on track, and this accountability with another person automatically energizes your thought process and may even open up a whole new realm of dreams and possibilities. 6 Easy Steps to a Better Life (and more successful job search)

The law of attraction is one of the few universal laws that matters when it comes to improving your life NOW! Whenever you transmit positive energy, you immediately attract more positive energy into your life. Positive people will be drawn to you, and when people who are positive come together the results are multiplied. The desire for positive outcomes increases, and positive actions create positive results. Negative people have the exact opposite effect…so WATCH OUT and STAY AWAY from anyone who is negative. It’s too risky and self sabotaging to bother with them at all!

Whether you believe it or not, people around you respond to your energy…and you respond to their energy. The universe answers whatever it is you put out there. Your subconscious mind is always telling the universe what it wants and what it believes to be true. So, the question is “How can you improve your odds of attracting better thoughts, people and outcomes into your life?”

I can tell you this… It’s not your job, your parents, your spouse, your boss, rush hour traffic, etc.. that creates ANY of your energy. It is your perception that creates it. Everything around you is what it is. Your REACTION to it is what you have control over. Here are a few easy steps to increasing your odds of getting the most out of each and every relationship, job, personal goals, etc…

1. Meditate, Early and Often! It can take two minutes or an hour, but any meditation will help clear your mind of negativity and get into your focused and happy place. Keep it simple, sit and relax and focus on your breathing. Breathe in (take in all the goodness of life) and breathe out (exhale all negative feelings and worries). Feel your consciousness in the center of whatever is going on. Focus on your inner you!

2. Focus on the Good in Every Situation. Good and bad are only perceptions of our mind. The truth is there is one manifestation of the truth… You can call it God or spirit or universe, but it is pure goodness, and if you allow yourself to focus on the good things of any given situation, you will be conditioning your mind to make a habit of doing so. It will get easier in time, and you’ll eventually only see the good!

3. Do unto others…The golden rule is the only constant across all religions. Why? Because treating others the way you wish to be treated helps keep you out of trouble for one thing! But it also keeps you in a space of transmitting positive energy out. Positive out = positive in. So, while you’re “doing unto others”, you’re also doing unto yourself. It’s a WIN-WIN!

4. Let go of Resentments. The past is over. It’s that simple. If you hold onto the leftover emotions from a past divorce or bad relationship or anything negative from the past, you really are only hurting yourself. So learn to forgive and move on. Simply forgiving someone from your past (or even yourself for past mistakes) can open the flood gates of positive energy into your “now”.

5. Visualize Whirled Peas J Most of our minds are conditioned to think negatively. Make a conscious effort to change the way you visualize the world around you. Stop thinking negatively, start imagining all goodness is coming to you in a peaceful manner. There is no need to struggle. Open yourself up to the flow of the universe. Expect that you will attract health and wealth and creativity and love into your life. There is power in visualization…just make sure you’re visualizing positively!

6. Stay in the NOW! In each interaction in life, you have the choice to stay present. Rather than getting caught up in the mindless chatter of your brain, you can choose to be present. Acceptance is the key. You can’t change the past, and the future isn’t even here yet. You only have NOW! This simple act will calm your mind and spirit and attract other likeminded people to you, increasing positive energy even more!

5 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat (and keep your cool at work or in your job search)

Sweltering summers can be tough on all of us. With a high of 99 degrees today and 500% humidity here in the South, I get that! The heat can make it tough to concentrate on your work or effectively handle your job search too. If you’re stuck in a cubicle and you’d rather be lounging poolside, or if you’re putting on your suit for yet another interview and you’d rather already have the job, here are a few tips to keeping your cool (and staying productive) this summer:

1. Listen to music. Create a playlist and pump up the volume. Music therapy is a great way to get yourself out of a funk. Find songs that are uplifting, and play the same ones over and over again if you have to! I personally love jamming out to Sirius satellite radio’s BPM…and it’s the only station I ever listen to in the car or at home. I do this for one reason. It makes me feel AWESOME!

2. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and drink plenty of water. Pineapple, mango, banana, melons…they’re all good for you! They’re easy to digest and won’t leave you bloated or sluggish either. Mix in some ice or seltzer water or fat free yogurt and make yourself a fruit smoothie. Cheap and delicious!! Make it your mission to drink a gallon of water a day. I dare you!

3. Get your dose (even a healthy overdose here is ok) of Vitamin B. If you can’t concentrate and are feeling lethargic or “blue”, you may not have enough vitamin B in your system. Easy fix! Take it in pill form or get it the old fashioned way (seafood, lean meats, cheese and eggs).

4. Capitalize on the joys of Daylight Savings. If you get your workout and all your other tasks done early in the day, you’ll have plenty of light at the end of the day to sit by the pool, have a barbecue or just relax. Get up early and get yourself moving! You’ll be glad you did when 5:00 rolls around. Plan some outdoor activities with friends after work instead of going home and straight to the couch.

5. Cardio is KING (well, networking is King in the job search, but Cardio is the best way to make you feel better NOW). Take an afternoon walk to mix things up and get re-energized. Lots of people have afternoon slumps after their coffee has worn off. Take a 15 minute walk around the block if you can. The vitamin D from the sun and the fresh air will have you feeling better in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. It’s a quick, easy and free fix to improve your mood now!

Remember, that you are in control of making sure you stay at peak performance…in the workplace or in the job search process. Nobody else can do it for you, so take care of YOU today!!

What motivates you?

What motivates you? To find out, you really need to know what you value. Achieving (and holding onto) those things that we value is extremely motivating. Now, regardless of what motivates us, we’re all going need to have some cash for our journey…which means most of us need to work. Even if what motivates you is climbing Mount Everest or running in a marathon, you’ll have a hard time doing either if you don’t have any money.

Money is the exchange we use to express how much we value something else. That’s it! For instance, your boss values your 40 hours worth of work $___ much (your salary) and you value your $___ enough that you are willing to exchange your time to get it. You value food and exchange money to get it with farmers who have food and want money, and so on down the line.

So, we’re all somewhat motivated by money. I mean, without it you would have a tough time in life…unless of course you’re living off of the government or mooching off of someone else (DISCLAIMER: if either of these apply to you, I hope you found yourself here at this blog to change your situation!) In order to get this money, we work. But what motivates you at work? Do you know what you value within the confines of your professional life?

People value different things and in turn are motivated by different things in the workplace. Here are a few examples of things that motivate people in the workplace:

· Money- We’re all motivated by money to the extent it affords us our basic needs. But some people are much more motivated by money…and always having more of it. Jobs in sales or other positions that offer some sort of incentive based pay are great for people who are money motivated.

· Prestige- Some people are motivated by being associated with prestige. Some people only want to work for Fortune 100 companies, others like holding an executive position in a corporation or having an advanced degree or title accompanying their name. Prestige is a big motivator for many people.

· Fame/Recognition- Is 15 minutes of fame just not enough for you? Many people thrive on being recognized and having their accomplishments noticed. There are those who always want to be on stage or in the center of attention. Others are motivated by winning “Employee of the Month” or “Star Performer” type awards in the office (so that everyone knows what a great job they’re doing).

· Upward Mobility/Advancement- Climbing the corporate ladder is a big motivator for a lot of people. Never being satisfied with their current role, they always have their eye on the next position higher (or even several positions higher up the ranks). People who are motivated by advancement are often dedicated and hard working individuals who thrive on the politics of the office. They are usually very heavily identified with their careers on a personal level and attach their career ambitions very closely to their sense of self.

· Flexibility- Having a flexible schedule or the ability to work from home is another motivator. I personally have worked from home for most of my career. Although I don’t mind going into the office, I find that I am able to get more work done at home and enjoy the flexibility of a home office. Many working mothers and students are also motivated by flexibility in the workplace.

These are just a few examples. There are as many motivators as there are people. Once you’ve identified what you value and what motivates you, consider whether your current job is fulfilling those motivational needs. If it’s not, try to find a way to incorporate those things into your job. Volunteer for additional projects in the office, apply for a promotion or a bigger job within your company, ask whether you can have a flex schedule or the ability to work from home, etc..

If you can’t get these in your current job, find a job that affords them to you. Motivated individuals are more productive and tend to be happier. When your work life is in balance and you are motivated to be there, you will enjoy a better professional and personal life…and your work product will naturally be better (making for a happier boss, which is always good right?)

Overcoming Rejection (and other obstacles along the path to career happiness)

It was the call I had been waiting on for months! “Hello?” I answered in my most upbeat, positive voice. “Hi Jason, it’s Tim. I wanted to give you a call regarding the position you interviewed for.” He went on to inform me that the position ended up being changed due to a restructuring of the organization and I didn’t get the job. After several months of interviews, it came as quite a blow. My first thoughts were disbelief and then frustration settled in. Then I remembered the tools I had at my fingertips….gratitude being the most important. I quickly remembered how blessed I was in my current job and how much I had going for me in my professional life and in my personal life.

I can only imagine those of you who are out of work and how you handle those types of calls (or worse, an automated email!) that let you know “We appreciate your candidacy for ___ position. However, at this time we have decided to pursue another candidate…” How do you stay positive through the job search and rejections? How do you keep your head held high and move on to the next one until you’ve found your career “home”?

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re struggling with a professional (or personal) setback or rejection:

1. Get some Gratitude! Even if you have to fake it, be grateful for the good things in your life. An attitude of gratitude does wonders for your mood.

2. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. Remember, there are a million reasons why someone else could’ve gotten the job. Unless they specifically told you why you didn’t get it, don’t assume the worst.

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Keep in mind you’re not the only one who has been rejected. It happens to everyone at some point in their career. So, keep your chin up and remind yourself of all your good qualities! Self love is a good thing. Love yourself instead of beating yourself up.

4. Stay optimistic! There are other jobs out there that are a perfect fit for you. All you have to do is make an effort to stay in a positive space and keep on trying. I know that’s tough, believe me! But optimism comes across in the tone of your voice and optimistic people have more success…period.

5. STEP BACK to overcome a SETBACK! Take a step back and review the interview to see if there were any glaring areas where you know it went wrong. Review your answers, your attitude, your aura in the interview. Were you on your “A” game? If so, great! If not, put a little more effort into your preparation and practice. Figure out what would have been better answers to their questions and write them down so you can quickly recall them the next time you get asked something similar.

6. Phone-A-Friend. Use your “Life Line” to get critical feedback from a friend. Let them review your resume (I know we discussed this already in a previous blog!), do a mock interview with them in order to calm your nerves and increase your confidence. We’re all in this together, and a good friend would be more than happy to help you out.

7. Lastly, get physical! Releasing endorphins is a great way to get yourself back to a happy space. Take a long walk or go for a run. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get your body moving and your mind has no option but to catch up!

Whether you’ve been rejected once or a thousand times, it’s never easy. I get that! But even the best salesman gets a “no” once in a while. If you got a rejection at ABC Company, the best news is that’s one more rejection out of the way on your path to your dream job. Send them a nice “thank you for the opportunity to meet with you” note and move on to the next one. It’s your career…make it happen!!

In Defense of Job Boards

Over the past couple of years, there has been a steady outpouring just falling short of contempt for recruiters who rely on traditional job boards to source and recruit candidates (in this case, I am singling out CareerBuilder and Monster, from here on called CareerMonster). Some naysayers have gone so far as to openly state that candidates found on job boards are not the best, most qualified candidates to fill a job with a top company. This belief stems from the notion that a passive candidate (someone who is not openly looking for a new position) has more desirable qualities than someone who is actively, or openly, looking. I would just like to say, on the record, that I disagree. I do not eagerly wish to be a pariah amongst my sourcing peers, but I am hoping I can raise a few points as to why we should not run from job boards just yet. As a former respected agency recruiter, and now firmly entrenched in the corporate recruiting world, I have had unmitigated success in finding highly qualified job seekers on CareerMonster that result not only in hires, but in long term sustainable contributors. I believe that a good recruiter uses all available tools at their disposal, and that candidates are using the same logic. Which source a résumé originates from can never override how well that candidate will interview, match a hiring manager’s vision, or fit into the overall company culture.

I will be the first to acknowledge that anyone who “hangs out” on the job boards is not your top candidate. This can imply a candidate who starts a position and posts their new résumé on a job board shortly thereafter, candidates who have a history of job hopping, or a candidate who tells you they always keep their résumé posted “to see what is out there”. Most of these candidates you can weed out within seconds if you are a skilled résumé reader or interviewer.

What kind of candidate, then, should we be looking for on a job board?

As a recruiter, I know my industry, and I get to know my competitors. I generally know a good company from a not so great one, I understand the reputation and culture of a variety of companies and industries, and I keep up to date on market conditions, so I know which companies and industries are laying off, talking about layoffs, or historically flatten organizations and thus create a surplus of candidates. Knowing these details helps to unveil a layer of candidates that are posting their résumés for completely sane reasons, and thanks to years of practice in Boolean search strings, and a growing awareness on behalf of candidates to add specific data that is easily searchable, I can find them relatively quickly.

There are thousands of people that post their résumé on a job board for countless reasons and I am open to a lot of them. These reasons can include downsizing, rightsizing, management changes, mergers, acquisitions, or lack of growth within a current company or position due to any of the aforementioned reasons. As a recruiter, it is my job to determine which are plausible and which are not going to fly with a hiring manager. While there may be a job for everyone, my jobs are not for just anyone.

Sometimes recruiters hit pay dirt and get a very specific keyword to draw needles out of the haystack (some will argue these are not the most job board friendly positions, although I hope my case is building that they could be given the right circumstances). Other times, we are left with broad search criteria that can take days, if not weeks, to sift through profiles. Here’s the trick… don’t (pause) get (dramatic pause) complacent! While the job boards have created time saving strategies such as saved searches and alerts (which crawl the job boards while I am not working and allow me some much needed search string construction rest) I still need to continually refine my criteria. A missed word here, an extra word there, and a 5 mile change in my location radius can bring out a whole new crop of potential candidates. Once I start getting some hits, it is imperative to get on the phone and recruit! If their résumé is posted on a job board, and they are good (which my point is, at this stage of the game, they are) you have to get out there and tell them why they want to come work for you, or screen them out appropriately. No time or energy is more wasted than a great candidate who materializes only to disappear within your grasp because you didn’t pick up the phone to call them in time!

I don’t rely on job boards exclusively because I do understand not every candidate I want to talk to is posting their résumé for me to conveniently find. That’s why it is important to understand which regions, level of candidates and salary ranges are most effectively sourced on a job board- candidates, this is valuable information for you too!

If I am looking for a director in a major market, I am going to steer clear of the two major job boards and focus on more targeted direct sourcing methodologies. Although I won’t ever assume that they wouldn’t post a résumé on CareerMonster. For fun, I cross referenced candidates interviewing for said director level role with the job boards, and if they were unemployed or were facing an impending lay off, their résumé was tucked away on CareerMonster, readily available to me and my competitors.

For candidates who have been out of the market since Web 2.0 swept the recruiting nation, it’s easy to forgive them for not updating their LinkedIn profile, following evangelists in their field on Twitter, or gathering in the Facebook marketplace looking for a new opportunity. However, there is a critical shift upon us and at some point we may want to question how sophisticated a candidate’s technological bent is if they are not relying on social media to build a sustainable network with the end goal of feeding them job leads when they are ready to make a move. I just find it hard to discount a candidate who has hunkered down to do their job for not knowing that CareerMonster is passé. At the end of the day an offer, a hire, a match made by Cupid’s arrow between hiring manager and candidate justifies the means. Trust me, if I wasn’t getting results, would I put my name on this article? I would not. For now, I am going to be there to pick the fruit from the job board trees.

Job Seeker: Would you have any advice on how NOT to get nervous during an interview? I’ve been to so many interviews, and you’d think I wouldn’t care at this point. But I do, and that’s why I’m nervous! Unfortunately no amount of practice (with my family or alone in front of a mirror) seems to help me remember things “in the moment”. Then after the interview, I walk out and it all comes flooding back… I could’ve, should’ve, would’ve.

I find that I’m more nervous with inexperienced interviewers or people who just want to blast me with those behavioral interview questions…which seem to have nothing to do with whether I can do the job, want the job and WILL do the job to the best of my ability!

Why is it that recruiters take so much stock in those behavioral interview questions? Or should I say the ability for someone to answer them?

Talent Scout: Well it seems like your question is twofold: Behavioral interview questions and how to calm your nerves. Am I right?

Behavioral questions help us understand each other (both the interviewer and the candidate, when you ask questions in return). Consider you are on a first date. If all you ask are “Can you do ___?” or “How many years experience do you have doing ____?” you wouldn’t learn nearly as much about your potential partner as you would if you said something like “Tell me about your favorite experience doing ____.” Or “What are you most proud of?” or “How would you handle ____ situation?” THE SAME GOES FOR INTERVIEWING! It’s like a first date where you are both trying to learn as much as you can about the other in a one hour (or less) time frame.

As for being nervous, I personally try to overcome that by visualization techniques.

Visualize yourself sitting in the interview with all the confidence in the world
Visualize every question that gets asked of you and how you are quickly able to answer it with a strong, solid answer.
Visualize yourself at the end of the interview “closing” them on the deal.
Visualize the call you’ll be getting with the offer!
Visualize yourself as a valued member of the company, with your office and your boss and your team, etc..

I think visualization combined with practice (and a good night’s sleep before your interview) are the most powerful tools at your disposal when preparing for an interview.

Did he (Mr. Candidate) really just say that? (and the one question you should ALWAYS ask)

“What’s the one thing I would need to do, if offered this position, to have an immediate impact on the team?” he asked as we were wrapping up the interview. “How refreshing”, I thought! This mid level manager candidate nailed it just by asking the question!

Wrapping up my interviews, I always ask if a candidate has any questions for me. Half of them ask something like “Is this a new position or replacement?”, or “How long has this position been open?”, or “How quickly are you looking to fill this position?”. All of these are decent questions, but they sound like something most likely found off a quick Google search on “what questions to ask the interviewer”. Others say something like “Not really…I think you did a great job of explaining things.” The absolute worst ones are when a candidate takes this opportunity to go straight to “What are the hours?” or “How long until Short Term Disability kicks in?” (YES, I’ve actually had a candidate ask that last one!)

When a hiring manager or recruiter asks if you have any questions, ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING PREPARED TO ASK THEM...NO MATTER WHAT!! Do you research on the company or department ahead of time if you are able to do so. If not, ask probing questions. Great questions include,

· “How can I make an immediate impact in this department?”

· “What’s the one thing this team/department/company struggles with that keeps you up at night?”

· “How will you measure my success in this role?”

· “What do you think would it look like if someone with more potential than you can imagine (ie. ME) stepped into this role and took the team to the next level…or the level after that?” (MY PERSONAL FAVORITE…IF YOU ARE BOLD ENOUGH, BE PREPARED TO KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF WITH THIS ONE)

· “How do I measure up against other candidates you’ve spoken to?”

· “What concerns do you have about my background and abilities?”

There are many more great questions to ask, but as you can see the questions that stand out (and get you more REAL information about the situation you may be stepping into, if given the role) are the ones that aren’t about the basic logistics of the recruiting process or the job. They elicit answers that will paint you a clear picture of what may be your future. They are discovery focused questions about the situations that lie waiting in the deep, dark cubicle lined offices where you just might be spending the next few years of your life. Why wouldn’t you want to know the details on WHAT’S GOING ON THERE? Whatever you learn from the answers will surely help you to:

1) Decide whether it’s a mission you want to pursue.

2) Get an idea of what your game plan will need to be if offered the job.

3) Understand what the manager (or your new boss) sees as areas of opportunity.

4) Learn what you need to do to make a difference (and make your new boss happy!)

Senior leaders like to hire individuals who they trust can get the job done. They want people who are problem solvers who “get it” and who care about the business. They are generally not looking for someone with the limited mindset of “How soon are you looking to fill this job?” Understand?

1,000 Interviews Later

What can you learn in 1,000 (one thousand) interviews? In a typical year, I interview approximately 1,000 people. The overall “feel” of the candidate landscape changes each year, and some years are harder than others (especially lately when I speak with people who have been out of work for sometimes as long as a year or more). But what I love most about my work is that I get to make an impact on people’s lives…whether I hire them or not! It also affords me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.

The following is a partial list of types of candidates I have come across lately:

1) There are the people with the funky ring tones. If you’re looking for a job and you have one of those ringtones that will make me think I’m jamming out in the club, CHANGE IT! Period. It doesn’t matter if it’s rock or rap or country or blues, CHANGE IT!

2) There are the eager ones who are willing to accept just about any job. I call them up and they are willing to adjust their “experience” to meet whatever I’m looking for. Again, if this is you…DON’T DO IT! You should be looking for a position that actually matches your experience. You should also consider the corporate culture of the company. Not every corporate culture is a fit for everyone. Be on the lookout for a place you can call “home”. It will make your work life much more enjoyable, trust me!

3) There are the ones with poor communication skills. It happens way more often than it should unfortunately. I call someone who isn’t expecting my call, and they either:

a) Sound like they just woke up from a rough night out at the clubs and should’ve let my call go to voicemail, or

b) They just have poor communication skills in general.

If you’re looking for a job (and have your resume out for recruiters to find) you should ALWAYS be prepared for our calls! If you partied too hard last night, let the call go to voicemail and call us back when you’re better prepared. If you have poor communication skills, PRACTICE! Join a Toast Masters group in your area and work on your elevator pitch. Try calling yourself up and leaving a voicemail for yourself or for a friend. Play it back and hear how you sound. Ask your friends how they think you sound. Tell them to be honest, and if you need to make adjustments DO IT!

4) There are the gems who just can’t seem to find a break. This is the toughest part of my job. When I call someone up who has been out of work for many months or a year (or in some cases longer), it is tough. I can hear the desperation and despair in their voice. Even if you’ve been unemployed for a long time, do whatever you can to keep yourself in a good space. Eat right, get adequate rest, exercise and try to remain positive. It will come across when you’re interviewing.

5) There are the crazy ones. You can’t have 1,000 (one thousand) interviews without coming across some characters. I’ve had some candidates who felt they should’ve been considered for a position when either I or the hiring manager didn’t see it. The most appropriate thing to do if you get a “no thank you” from a position you’ve applied to is to reply and thank the recruiter for the opportunity and ask them to keep you in mind for other opportunities.

Once I had a guy who had lied on his resume. When I realized it, I let him know that I wouldn’t be considering him for the role. He became furious and even called back several times leaving me obscene voicemails. Believe me- he will NEVER BE CONSIDERED for any position I EVER work on again. Don’t let your emotions get the most of you (and if you really are unstable or having a tough time emotionally in your job search, talk to a professional!).

6) Lastly, there are the ROCK STARS! There’s nothing quite as wonderful as those first few minutes on the phone with someone who I “just know” will get hired. They communicate well, they are prepared, they have researched the company and positions they are applying for, and they can present their case of why I should hire them. Even if you’re the best candidate, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SELL THE RECRUITER on your background. Put together a 90 day plan of how you will make a difference in the position, prepare and rehearse your elevator pitch, stand up when you’re talking on the phone for better energy. Go above and beyond and you won’t be interviewing for long….you will have yourself a job in NO TIME!
