Originally built in the era of the Roman Empire and the site of the famous Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312AD, Ponte Milvio began attracting couples, who used a lamppost on the bridge to hang padlocks as a sign of their love, in 2006. The ritual involved locking the padlock to the lamp post, before throwing the key into the Tiber and was invented by author Federico Moccia for his book and movie “I Want You”. Just a year later, the original lamp post collapsed under the weight of the many padlocks, however today all around the bridge steel columns have been introduced by the Mayor to enable the popular tradition to continue for years to come!

Northern Lights weddings growing in popularity

With 2012 tipped (by NASA) to be the best year for the Aurora Borealis for 50 years, there’s been a surge in bookings for ‘Northern Lights Weddings’. 1. Try to keep it simple and stress free.

7. When planning your make-up, remember you will need to wear high factor sunblock, as you will be out in the sun for a considerable length of time.

9. Check out the work of your photographer on-line, so you are happy with their work.
10. Ask for added extras, such as Zulu singers or dancers.

ABTA 2012 Travel Trends includes increase in Weddings Abroad

ABTA released its 2012 predictions for travel a couple of days ago, and the part we like the best is their prediction that more couples will get married abroad.

ABTA says, "More weddings abroad. One in five couples currently marry overseas with an average saving of £12,500 on a UK wedding; with pressures on budgets and a focus on value for money, many more couples are expected to say ‘I do’ abroad in 2012."

We're obviously biased, but 20% of UK couples now agree that having a wedding abroad is great value for money and can be less hassle than trying to please all the relatives at home - we're not going to disagree!!

Scientists predict that the magical Northern Lights will be at their brightest since 1958 this winter and coming spring. Couples looking to catch a glimpse of the elusive Aurora Borealis can now visit Iceland, the only destination where the lights can be witnessed throughout the whole country, with Scott Dunn’s new Northern Lights Safari - perfect for a winter honeymoon.

After a romantic dip and in-water massage at the famous Blue Lagoon, honeymooners will explore the dramatic south coast from the chic art deco Hotel Borg in Reykjavik, Iceland’s quirky capital.

By day, discover the natural wonders of the Golden Circle on an exhilarating private super jeep adventure. The more adventurous can continue to the Langjökull or Mýrdalsjökull glaciers to snowmobile across the icy, winter wonderland. An Italian honeymoon with a twist, Scott Dunn’s new Sicily itinerary combines the culture of Taormina with the lunar landscapes of the mysterious Aeolian Islands, one of Italy’s best-kept secrets.

Honeymooners will begin married life in the Sicilian town of Taormina, built on the side of Mount Tauro - where it is said DH Lawrence took inspiration from an English woman living here when writing his most famous novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Stay two nights in the Grand Hotel Timeo, once a favourite of the Elizabeth Taylor, with spectacular views across the bay and Mount Etna. Days will be spent wandering Taormina’s streets browsing designer boutiques, antiques and arts shops and visiting the magnificent Greek Amphitheatre.

Beginning in Dubrovnik with three nights at chic and stylish Villa Dubrovnik set amongst pine, orange and lemon trees with stunning views back over to the old town.
