When International IPA Day was first announced I was skeptical. As a stout fan and general craft beer lover I did not see the point in celebration one style of beer, I still don’t. I didn’t and won’t let my inner hater come out and leave bad comments about it because while I didn’t agree with the holiday I did applaud the efforts of those who took the time to create an event that had a lot of the big name breweries and bloggers backing the effort.

It goes back to the “why didn’t I think of that” state of mind. Anyone could’ve made up a holiday celebrating one style of beer, but the ones who did made it HAPPEN. Congratulations to Ashley aka Beer Wench on creating and annual beer holiday for lovers of IPAs. (A little of my inner hater came out there, I’ll settle)

Along comes Stout Day, and all of a sudden I am pumped. My feelings for Stouts far outweigh my feelings for IPAs. However, I was a little more frustrated about this holiday because now someone is actually strolling on my turf, my favorite style, my beer. What makes this person think they can make a holiday out of the blue? There goes my inner hater again.

My opinion is simple. Let’s not make a holiday for any other beer style. I am not looking forward to a Hef Day or a Sour Day or a Lambic Day. There is already an International Beer Day (the day after IPA Day) and a National Beer Day (April 7) so let’s keep the holidays on the minimum.

We don’t need holidays for everyday activities, such as beer drinking, but I will back the efforts of those who work hard at it and do it really well (Ashley and Erin). Does this sound flip floppy? I do enjoy the results of these grass roots efforts though. For example, tonight I will be at the Portsmouth Brewery Celebrating this made up holiday to socialize with fellow stout lovers and then ending my night at another bar where they put 8 stouts on tap in honor of the holiday. I will be celebrating effort by enjoying stouts on this day, but I will be having stouts and enjoying them just the same outside of November 3.

For those celebrating today, raise a Stout and congratulate Erin (@TheBeerGoddess) on her great work in turning Stout Day into a holiday. My November Christmas.

My name is Brian and I will be the newby providing some rants and other helpful posts abotu the wonderful word of beer. I have my own blog called Seacoast Beverage Lab, maybe you have heard of her. You may also recognize me from episode 49 of the podcast! In any event if you want to follow along you can check out www.SeacoastBeverageLab.com for more fun.

Now that that’s out of the way…lets rant.

Too many times I have been at my local brewery and the same kind of customer comes in. This customer comes in all shapes and sizes but mostly in my neck of the woods he is usually in an Ed Hardy shirt or the good ol’ Jeans/assless chaps combo. They belly up to the bar as if they own it and flag down the bartender with a couple snaps or a wave. First off, nothing kills me more than someone who snaps at a bartender. Be patient or get out. Once the bartender comes over I wait in anticipation, as 9 out of 10 times this “dandy” (we’ll call him) will ask for a bud light/corona/bud/coors. I am far from a beer snob but I do know there is a time and place for bud lights, and a brewery isn’t the place. Yes, I have been to breweries that have bud produts on tap but I just wish the “dandies” would be a little more adventurous. The rant doesn’t stop here. After being told as nice as possible that the brewery only carries their beer, with the occasional guest tap, HE WALKS OUT!

America, we as a people need to hold hands across this great nation and teach people that its OK to have a beer from a brewery and that it isn’t frowned upon to ask a bartender what beer is similar to Beer X before storming out the door. It isn’t up to us to clear the misconceptions people have about craft beer, but we can sure be at the forefront of assistance, right? If the person looks like he wouldn’t kick my ass I would suggest he try a blonde, which is similar in taste to the beer he requested. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t, at least I tried.

This afternoon, I had a chance to sit down and talk with everyone’s favorite Tanker, Norm! for the latest in our segment “Getting to Know The Tankers.” Norm and I met back in May at NHC, and he’s such a likable guy you’d have thought we’d known each other for years. Seriously, you’d be hard pressed to find a nicer individual than Norm. A Washington native, Norm has been homebrewing since 1992 and made it to the second round of the NHC judging in the American Ale category this year! (that’s a tough thing to do folks). Norm is the President of his homebrew club: “Brew” and you can find him at @normskibrewer on the Twitter.
