Perfectly timed to coincide with Las Vegas Jewelry Week, Couture 2013 is just around the corner. From May 30 until June 3, the world’s leading jewelry and timepiece designers, retailers, and manufacturers will gather at the exclusive Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas for Couture. For over 16 years, the Couture show has been the destination of choice for the stars of the luxury goods industry. With every passing year, this prestigious event continues to gain steam within the luxury community and is now considered the preeminent place to showcase jewelry and watches.

According to Gevril President Samuel Friedmann, “the Couture show has become the place where established brands, rising stars, powerful retailers and luxury trend setters discover what is going to excite customers and drive sales during the year ahead.”

Friedmann says that participation in the influential Couture show is absolutely essential for Gevril Group. During the five-day event, the show generated much more traffic and interest than the company initially anticipated. “We had success with every price point. When Donatella Versace Throws a Party
The Fashion World Knows What’s Next!

In celebration of the launch of Versus Versace’s new 2013 Collection, along with a new capsule line by British design hotshot JW Anderson, Donatella Versace cranked up the glitz and glamor at a New York City bash for the fashion world’s newest crop of superstars. This fabulous fashion fête featured lots of leather, along with a bold new use of colors and textures that firmly reestablished Versus Versace as the rock ‘n’ roll soul of the fabled Italian label.

Headlining the glittery evening were two of the music world’s hottest new stars: Grimes and Angel Haze. Claire Boucher, better known by her stage name Grimes, wowed the audience in a Versus granite-hued skirt and a top adorned with Versace’s trademark logo, which was perfectly accented with black combat boots.

Grimes, who was awarded the Webby for Artist of the Year in 2013, showcased her unique and original synthesis of industrial, electronic, pop, hip hop, and R&B, while Angel Haze showed why she has become one of today’s hottest female rappers.

Angel, who rocked a colorful, oversize button-up Versus Versace print during her electrifying performance, proved once again that she really does rule in New York City. Although Grimes and Angel are at opposite ends of the musical spectrum, both women were seen wearing Versace’s signature medallion necklace during the May 15th event.

The young, hip and decidedly star-studded audience included luminaries like Cameron Silver, Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen, and singer Paloma Faith. These long-time Versace fans pulled out all the stops, wearing some fabulous Versace outfits themselves.

Versace’s Skillful Fusion of Watchmaking and Fashion Art

One appeal of owning a mechanical watch is the ability to see the finely tuned movement inside. The concept of a “skeleton” design caters to this sensation by exposing a portion or all of the movement through an opening in the dial.

Creating the dial opening is not the challenge – doing so artfully, is. The new DV One Skeleton, introduced at Baselworld 2013, is Versace’s take on skeleton design; it combines the brand’s most iconic watch case with its celebrated fashion sensibility.

The highlight of the watch is, of course, the dial, which is divided into two hemispheres – the skeletonized east and the dialed west. With almost half of the dial dedicated to the skeleton display, there is ample space to show off some of the components that make up the Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module and base movement. Finishing techniques such as linear graining, polishing and perlage are visible.

In the western hemisphere, Versace style and creativity takes over. On a base color of black, three sub-dials are connected by way of a suspended bridge in IP rose gold. A second part of the bridge, colored blue and shaped like an arch, stretches across the minute register in perfect counterbalance to the open date wheel on the opposite side. Red accents at the center of each register match the tips of the small hands. (The sub-dial hands are stationary; instead, the register wheels rotate.) In all, the combination of blue, red and rose gold on a black background is lively and smart looking, and the bridges add symmetrical and geometrical depth. The luminescent hour hand, minute hand and indexes – which circle the entire dial, even on the skeletonized side – are also coated in IP rose gold.

While the focus of the Versace DV One Skeleton Watch is most certainly on the dial, the case is anything but an afterthought. At 43.5 mm, the look is confident and modern. The case material is an alloy of ceramic and titanium; the result is an extremely hard and lightweight substance that is strong and highly resistant to scratches. The bracelet and bezel are also made of ceramic titanium.

The bezel features a tachymeter scale and IP rose gold accents that complement the dial. The crown and chronograph pushers are also colored with IP rose gold.

Since the company’s purchase in 2003 by a group of private investors headed by Alain Spinedi, Louis Erard has produced well over 100,000 watches. In addition, Louis Erard is currently making their own watch movement for use in their classic designs.

Louis Erard’s Baselworld 2013 booth clearly reflected their unrivaled success. Last year’s booth was smaller and not as noticeable as this year’s, which was widely applauded as one of the most beautiful booths at Baselworld. The Louis Erard exhibit was packed within hours of opening on press day.

The success of Louis Erard was not only reflected by their stunning booth that was decorated with beautiful flowers, but also by their introduction of many new timepieces at Baselworld 2013. After a $450 million makeover and a record number of visitors, the world’s most important watch and jewelry show confirmed what many in our industry already knew: the world loves wristwatches!

The Baselworld World Watch and Jewelry Show is over for another year. 120,000 visitors from over 100 different countries got their first look at the latest timepiece developments and innovations from over 1,450 different companies in a spectacular, newly renovated 1.5 million square foot exhibit space. After all the networking and parties were over, most participants agreed that this was the best Baselworld ever.

With a brand new two-story superstructure rising above Baselworld’s famous Messeplatz Exhibition Square, visitors, the press, and watch industry professionals enjoyed a sophisticated new ambience that left many looking forward to Baselworld 2014.

Baselworld 2013 was full of excitement and surprises for long time attendees. Rolex impressed everyone with a huge new exhibit space that was double the size of their 2012 exhibit area. The powerful Swatch Group dominated at the end of Hall 1, with a space large enough for their impressive roster of brands, which included familiar names like Rado, Omega, Breguet and Jaquet Droz.

The second floor of this impressive new Hall was devoted to the world of fashion, with an impressive showing by Gevril Group brands like Versace, Versus, and Salvatore Ferragamo. At the end of this hall was the beautiful booth of Gevril’s Louis Erard brand, which many attendees considered one of the nicest in the entire show. Gevril brands Bino, Catorex, Fortis, Jowissa, Laurens, and Lorenz also made an appearance at Basel 2013 in nearby offsite locations.

Baselworld 2013 Innovation

Baselworld has always been the place where manufacturers show off their most impressive new developments, and 2013 proved to be a banner year for innovation. Hublot showed off a mechanical marvel called LaFerrari with an amazing 50-day power reserve. Omega showed off a new type of balance spring created from a thin wafer of silicon. This precisely manufactured silicon spiral is perfectly symmetric and only one quarter the thickness of a metal spring, greatly improving the accuracy of the traditional mechanical watch. There were also scratchproof gold cases on display and some manufacturers even promised a maintenance-free mechanical movement.

One of the Oldest Cities in Denmark Provides
the Inspiration for This New Johan Eric Design

The city of Viborg, located in the center of Denmark, is one of the oldest municipalities in the country, tracing its roots all the way back to 8th Century Viking settlements. The city’s central location gave it great strategic importance during the Middle Ages, and it subsequently became home to the famous Viborg Cathedral, which has been a familiar site in the city since construction commenced in 1130 AD.

A Landmark Achievement

Essential watch collections in the Gevril brand lineup are named after famous New York City locales. These include Times Square and the Avenue of the Americas, the brand’s signature collection. The newest Manhattan landmark to be venerated by a Gevril watch collection is Columbus Circle.

The look of the Columbus Circle watch is inspired by the famous Columbus Circle roundabout intersection located at the southwest corner of Central Park outside of the Merchant’s Gate. At the intersection’s center is a commemorative monument, erected in 1892, honoring the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.

The watch’s dial design, with its series of concentric rings and wheels, is indeed reminiscent of the W 59th Street intersection. At the center is a stationary, silver-colored circular plate featuring the astrological symbols for the days of the week that, much like Columbus Circle (the point from which all official distances from New York City are measured) is the watch’s epicenter. Each astrological symbol matches up with its day of the week on the corresponding ring.

Dial arrangement is strongly based on the configuration of the watch’s ETA 2834/2 movement with a couple of key modifications: first, the open date wheel is modified so the orientation of the numbers is in a vertical position at 12 o’clock (two red lines flank the current date), and second; the days of the week typically printed on the day wheel are replaced by a red diamond that moves one increment daily to indicate the current day; the day names are instead printed on an adjacent stationary ring.

The 316L stainless steel case is 45 mm in diameter with a black PVD-coated bezel, which pairs well with the black calfskin strap. The crown, personalized with the Gevril logo, is also coated with PVD as is the strap buckle. The watch is water resistant to 165 feet and the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective.

A commemorative caseback features an engraved scene of streetcars rolling through Columbus Circle as it appeared at the turn of the century. A small porthole offers a peak at the movement. Like its Danish Namesake, the
Johan Eric Orstead is a Modern Day Marvel

Hans Christian Ørsted, while not as famous as contemporaries like Newton or Darwin, remains one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century. Ørsted was the first to discover the relationship between electricity and magnetism and was also the first person to successfully produce aluminum. Is the Party Over for Online Retailers?

Online retailers have revolutionized the way today’s consumers shop. People of all ages are discovering that shopping online is safe, convenient, and often less expensive than shopping at conventional “brick and mortar” stores. This new industry is still in its infancy, but its growth is nothing short of spectacular. The U.S. Bureau of the Census estimated there were $4.1 trillion in retail and wholesale transactions over the Internet in 2010 and this number is expected to get much larger in the years ahead.

Since current sales tax laws typically only apply to goods and services purchased in the seller’s home state, new Internet businesses have benefited by selling their products tax free to out-of-state customers. Until recently, politicians have supported this practice, because it encouraged the growth of a whole new type of industry and politicians know that business growth means new jobs.

Potential Revenue Gains

Opinions are changing however, and the party may soon be over for Internet retailers. Traditionally, state governments have relied on sales and use taxes for roughly a third of their total tax revenue. Local governments depend on sales taxes too, and derive over 11% of their tax revenue from sales and use taxes. With online sales booming, these governments are seeing a dramatic decline in revenue. It is estimated that Internet transactions were responsible for an estimated loss of $11.4 billion dollars in revenue to state and local governments throughout the United States in 2012.

With a stagnant economy and declining revenues, governments are looking for money anywhere they can find it. One place they are turning is online sales. Many legislators think that taxing online sale will level the playing field and be beneficial to traditional “brick and mortar” business in their constituencies. That is why large retailers like Walmart currently support an online sales tax. Many legislators aren’t as concerned about this perceived “fairness” issue. They just see online sales as an enormous new source of potential revenue.

Possible Consequences for Small Businesses

Although a few larger online retailers like Amazon support the concept of an online sales tax, the tax could be devastating for smaller retailers. Many think it would be an administrative nightmare to comply with an online sales tax law, since each state and municipality has their own tax laws. With thousands of different tax jurisdictions, each imposing their own tax rate, it could be extremely complex for sellers to deal with a different set of rules for every out-of-state buyer.

Inevitable Outcome?

Despite the complexities, the Marketplace Fairness Act has strong bipartisan support in congress and the legislation is expected to pass as early as May 6. With government at every level hungry for new sources of revenue, it’s hard to find opposition to the proposed Internet sales tax. Even those who have pledged not to increase taxes tend to support this bill, saying that it is not a new tax, but simply a mechanism that allows states to more effectively enforce existing tax laws.

With online sales continuing to grow at an astounding 16% a year, it is increasingly clear that state and local governments are going to want a share of this lucrative pie.

Is Corum’s Move to China a Sign of Things to Come?

When Chinese watchmaker China Haidian Holdings purchased Eterna AG in 2011, the Swiss watch industry immediately took notice. Eterna was a major player in the world of luxury timepieces. The company was famous for developing the ubiquitous ETA movement. Without Eterna, there wouldn’t be an ETA movement in the vast majority today’s fine mechanical watches.

Now, China Haidian Holdings has consolidated its position in the luxury Swiss watch sector with the purchase of another Swiss icon: the popular luxury watchmaker Corum. China Haidian announced on April 24, that it had acquired 100% of Corum for 86 million Swiss francs (US $90.9 million). Corum timepieces are well known for their gold and jewel encrusted designs and the brand is quite popular with celebrities and watch aficionados. In a prepared statement China Haidian chief executive Hon Kwok Lung said, “I am very pleased with this acquisition and I firmly believe in the potential development of Corum.”

Is the Future of the Watch Industry in China?

China Haidian Holdings already owns two of the top four domestic Chinese watch brands, EBOHR and ROSSINI. In addition to owning the Swiss brand Eterna, Haidian also has a license to manufacture and distribute “Porsche Design” watches globally as well as distribute various other luxury watches in China.

With the Far East currently the strongest market for timepieces worldwide, watch industry insiders are looking closely at these Chinese acquisitions and wondering what they mean for the future. Many see Chinese acquisitions like Eterna and Corum a win-win proposition for all involved. The Chinese get access to hundreds of years of Swiss watchmaking knowledge and expertise. The newly acquired companies gain access to new and better manufacturing methods, along with an opportunity to more effectively market their products to the all-important Asian audience.

With wristwatches continuing to grow in popularity as a fashion accessory, many see a bright future for Swiss and Chinese companies alike.

Minutes are indicated more traditionally, using a central minute hand. The beautiful minimal design is both innovative and easy to read.

The 43 mm stainless steel timepiece features a fluted screw-in crown, a scratch resistant sapphire crystal and an impressive water resistance of 656 feet. Renewed, Recharged, and Totally Retro

Popular culture steers people to explore new and different trends. But some designs continue to work – decade upon decade – and those labeled “classic” always return to favor. Such is the case with the Fortis Marinemaster watch, originally released in the 1940s. The Marinemaster remained in the Fortis lineup for decades, and the Marinemaster Chronograph was popular well into the 1970s when the quartz movement revolution forced the watch industry to rethink its mechanical future. The industry bounced back in a big way, as did many of the classic watch designs of the 20th century.

Today, reconnecting with classic watches of bygone eras is as popular as ever. As part of the brand’s centennial celebrations, Fortis released two versions of its Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph in 2012: one with blue accents and the second, shown here, with orange accents. Both are limited editions of 500 pieces.

The Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch is true to the look of its predecessor in most ways including the shape of the lugs, the piston-style chronograph pushers and the unidirectional, graduated dive bezel. Similarities extend to the dial, too, including the orange sub-dials; the two-tone 30-minute sub-dial; the shape of the hands and hour markers; the minutes-and-seconds track, and the tachymeter scale at the outside of the dial.

Enthusiasts will note that the position of the 30-minute counter and the 60-second counter are reversed compared to the ’70s iteration, which is a result of the configuration of the new automatic movement – the Fortis caliber F-2020 – an ETA 2892-A2 base with a Dubois Depraz 2020 chronograph module.

Other than the upgraded movement, the most notable difference is the watch’s exhibition caseback that provides a view of the movement in action. The water resistance of the Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph is 165 feet (less than the original, which was over 650 feet).

The three-part case is made of stainless steel and measures 40 mm in diameter. Another nod to the original is the inclusion of domed acrylic on the front that is made of PMMA – the same type of acrylic that was used before the advent of synthetic crystal. The watch is mounted on a black calfskin strap with white stitch and employs a traditional clasp buckle.

If the reliability of a modern watch is more appealing than the quirks of vintage, or a vintage model simply eludes capture, consider the Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Chronograph watch. Its classic retro design in tandem with an updated automatic movement will remain a favorite long after the whim of the next style craze.

You Know you’ve got a Winner When
Three Astronauts Congratulate you From Space

Fortis has been involved with developing timepieces specifically designed to withstand the rigors of space travel for over forty years. In 1994, the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Automatic became part of the regulation equipment handed over to cosmonauts before each launch. To this day, every cosmonaut and astronaut who goes through the training program at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia receives a Fortis watch as part of their official space equipment.

Unlike some “high performance watches,” a Fortis space watch is the real thing. Fortis watches have been into orbit many times and to this day are still the only official timepieces of the Russian Space Program. Choose the Romance of a Hand-Wound Classic

Louis Erard will showcase a new black-dialed version of its 40 mm Excellence Power Reserve dress watch at Baselworld 2013 in April. The Power Reserve, named for its featured complication, as well as the Regulator Power Reserve – both from the brand’s Excellence collection – are chief examples of Louis Erard’s mechanical watchmaking expertise.

With the addition of this black model, the Power Reserve watch line now consists of three variations: a black dial, a silver-tone dial and a white dial 80 piece limited edition with an 18 kt. rose gold case. All three share the same dial layout; however, the black dial offers what is perhaps the most sumptuous version to date.

The combination of white and silver elements on a deep black background is timeless, and no more so than on the Excellence Power Reserve, due in part to the simplicity of the dial design. A power-reserve indicator between 10 and 11 o’clock is crescent shaped and cut into the numerals X and XI; a small-seconds indicator at 6 o’clock is composed of a thin cross that divides the minute quarters; the brand and model names reside below the XII, and; the serifed Roman numerals are thin, elongated and placed close to the edge of the dial, further enhancing its neat arrangement. Elegant and gently curved feuille (“leaf” in English) style hands offer a pleasing contrast to the sharper lines of the Roman numerals.

Notably, the Power Reserve does not have a seconds or minutes track, meaning tracking time to the second is not easy. This is often the case on a dress watch and it is entirely intentional; the purpose of the watch, after all, is less related to utilitarian timekeeping; instead, it is geared toward preserving the romantic sensibilities of old-world watchmaking and very in tune with the Louis Erard philosophy of design and pride in heritage.

This is not to suggest that the Power Reserve is not mechanically astute. In fact, it boasts a Swiss made ETA Peseux 7001 RM10 movement modified in-house by Louis Erard. The movement is hand-winding, further upholding the charm of a classic dress watch.

The sapphire crystal is treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The stainless steel case is decorated on the back and water-resistant to 165 feet. Louis Erard pairs the Power Reserve with a black croc-patterned leather strap with a steel folding clasp.
