Join us on November 21st for our GRAND OPENING celebration of our new IMHS Second Chance Thrift Store above the shelter in Pine Junction! More than your average thrift store, Second Chance will stock new and very gently used items at great prices!

The store will officially open for business on Tuesday, November 17th and will be open Tuesday - Friday 12pm - 4pm and Saturday 10am - 4pm. Interested in helping us expand our hours?? Send an e-mail to wendy@imhs.org if you can donate your time on a weekly basis.

Below are the donation times and guidelines. Please read through the lists of what we do and do not accept BEFORE bringing items to the store. We have to be very selective given our small space and will turn away those items we've asked not to be donated. Please call with questions regarding specific items not listed (303) 838-2668.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT DONATED ITEMS ARE USED TO RAISE FUNDS TO HELP ANIMALS IN AND AROUND THIS COMMUNITY AND THE THRIFT SHOP HAS VERY LITTLE SPACE.
ITEMS SHOULD BE OF A QUALITY THAT THEY COULD BE SOLD ON AN AUCTION SITE SUCH AS E-BAY. MANY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS ACCEPT DONATIONS FOR PEOPLE IN NEED OF CLOTHING AND ITEMS REGARDLESS OF THEIR CONDITION AND A FEW ARE LISTED BELOW. DRIVE SMART EVERGREEN/CONIFER IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE RIDE SMART; A NEW INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE ON-HIGHWAY MOTORCYCLE SAFETY IN THE FOOTHILLS COMMUNITIES OF JEFFERSON COUNTY

In 2008, thirteen motorcycle fatalities occurred in Jefferson County, the second highest number in the state (2008 Colorado FARS). Furthermore, six (46%) of those fatalities involved riders with a BAC ≥ 0.08%, more than any other county in Colorado. Nationally in 2007, 28 percent of all fatally injured motorcycle riders had BAC levels of .08 g/dL or higher, a percentage less than half that of Jefferson County (NHTSA 2007, Data DOT HS 810 990).

With grant funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), the Colorado Department of Transportation (“CDOT”) has awarded funds to DRIVE SMART Evergreen/Conifer (“DSEC”) in partnership with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (“JCSO”) in the amount of $23,000.00 to establish a motorcycle safety coalition, named RIDE SMART. DRIVE SMART has taken a proactive stance in partnership with the JCSO to reduce these unacceptable losses of motorcyclists riding in our community. RIDE SMART is the first in Colorado working towards implementation of NHTSA’s new PROJECT GREEN-YELLOW-RED. Our focus is to reduce motorcycle riding at unsafe speeds and/or while impaired, to decrease the number of motorcycle crashes, injuries and deaths as well as to encourage all riders to ride within the limits of their abilities.

DRIVE SMART is pleased to announce that Deborah Napier, a licensed motorcyclist, and motorcycle safety advocate has joined our mission. She has completed the MSF Experienced Rider Course and is a Master Tread Trainer with Tread Lightly!

As Coordinator of the DRIVE SMART’s RIDE SMART motorcycle safety coalition, in the first year of the NHTSA grant, Ms. Napier will establish a working coalition in the Evergreen/Conifer area. This new coalition will include motorcycling enthusiasts, motorcycle dealerships, a Jefferson County public health official, a Jefferson County Sheriff Office representative from the Mountain Precinct as well as interested owners of restaurants and taverns frequented by motorcyclists in Evergreen and Conifer. Ms. Napier and RIDE SMART’s outreach to the motorcycling community has already started with the October meeting of ABATE’s District 16 organization in Conifer.

DRIVE SMART Evergreen-Conifer is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop partnerships with schools, businesses, civic, community and governmental organizations to educate, create awareness and improve attitudes concerning safe and courteous motor vehicle operation in our mountain communities. We seek to reduce traffic related injuries and fatalities. DSEC is the recipient of the “Non-Profit of the Year Award” from the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce in 2008.

ON COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE
DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Whether it's recent or long ago, dealing with the death of a loved one can be challenging , especially during the holiday season when the expectations for celebration are high. Mt. Evans Hospice is hosting a free workshop called “Honoring the Empty Chair,” where bereaved adults will learn and share ideas to help cope with the loss of a family member or friend during the holiday season.

The workshop will be offered twice this season: Tuesday, Dec. 1, 10:00 a.m. to noon and Thursday, Dec. 3, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mt. Evans social worker Barb Lamperski, MSW, LSW, will lead the meetings, which will feature discussions about coping strategies and support resources. Light refreshments will be served.

Outdoor Lab to Costa Rica

We are taking a group of high school students and teachers to Costa Rica for 10 days July 12 through July 21 2010. The trip is designed to expand the Outdoor Lab experience by providing a science-based, expeditionary study in the amazing ecology of Costa Rica. Our exploration of the entire country includes the rain forest, a volcano, rivers, lakes and the west coast. In addition, we will be visiting a school while we are there. Boys and Girls club of Park County! A safe place for Teens!

In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.

Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

The Bailey community now has a Boys and Girls club! It is located in Friendship Ranch at Deer Creek Christian camp. There is a beautiful lodge and indoor gymnasium complete with billiards, ping pong, Foosball, Wii and board games. There is a 6 hole disk golf course, baseball field, sand volleyball court and tubing run (for winter of course)! There is a fire pit that we roast marsh-mellows in on Friday's. We conduct daily programs promoting "Smart Moves" for kids and teens. These programs help kids think smartly about situations that may occur in their lives. They will learn to make good healthy choices.

We are open 3:00 PM until 6:45 PM every school day. We are not open when the schools are closed. Membership is free for the fall. If your child needs transportation, send a note saying he/she needs to ride bus #4 to Boys and Girls club. When you pick up your child, you can fill out the necessary paperwork. Questions? We are a small church across from Will o Wisp subdivision just into Park Co. Everyone, and we do mean Everyone, is welcome. Though Methodist in name, we come from an assortment of denominations. There is a wonderfully eclectic Sunday service at 10 AM with a traditional Sunday School for kids. Try us one Sunday. We would love to see you.

The Conifer VFW Post 12009 approved the startup of a Ladies Auxiliary for the Post. If you ladies are 17 and older, are the wife, daughter, step daughter, etc of a Veteran that is either in the VFW or eligible to join the VFW, then you are eligible to join the Ladies Auxiliary of Conifer. You can go to WWW.VFW.ORG look up the ladies auxiliary and read up on the who qualifies etc.
