Digital Library on American Slavery (University of NC at Greensboro)
With the commemorative and educational focus of February’s Black History Month just around the corner, it’s a good opportunity to center and share resources for learning about North Carolina’s African American heritage all year long. Librarians, archivists, and educators have assembled a broad range of resources for all ages and interests, and we’ll highlight a sampling of accessible resources uniquely related to the Black experience in North Carolina. We are pleased to share new content in NCpedia, North Carolina’s online encyclopedia. Many of these new resources help develop the diversity of our history, including the lives and contributions of women and persons of color, as well as stories of daily life.
Vital records are important to research, but they are not always easy to find. In North Carolina, birth certificates began to be issued on a statewide basis in October of 1913. It is necessary to know the county where the person was born as the records are located in the County Register of Deeds office where the birth took place. You will need to contact them to find out if a certificate exists for your ancestors. You can go to your preferred search engine and search bar search for the phrase [county name] County NC Register of Deeds.
The State Publications Clearinghouse has created a new collection within the North Carolina Digital Collections! Have a look at The Daily Bulletin digital collection. We will continue to add new and past issues to this collection. Currently, the collection showcases the years 2006-2020. The 2000-2006 years are being digitized and will be available in the digital collection once completed.

The Government and Heritage Library (GHL) strives to be the principal library for North Carolina state government, serve state employees, researchers, and the general public and be your go-to source for everything North Carolina. We have extensive resources about North Carolina, and we want to continue to expand our collections to support and enhance the research needs and interests of North Carolina’s diverse communities.

As we approach the holiday season, many folks like to revisit long-held traditions like baking something using a handed-down recipe or sharing a family story. In a year like 2020, when holidays look much different than in years past, it’s especially important to find joy wherever you can.
A little over a year ago, we introduced you to our NCpedia online quizzes. Our first quiz was about NC Women’s History.
