Javik - Mass Effect 3 costume

2013-12-26T23:35:00.000+02:00

Hey everyone
Haven't posted here for more then year. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
I do post more often on my facebook page

This year I started making my costume quite early - in January (for a September competition).

Everything started by ripping Mass Effect 3 Javiks model directly from game files and converting him to be usable by Pepakura.
Head and armour are separate files.
Head file [here]
Armour file for foam (only one side unfolded - mirror it for other side) [here]

Head is for ~60cm circumference head (more or less).

After printing tone of pages for both armor and head. I started cutting them and gluing them together. That took quite a while.

After finishing peped head i reinforced inside of it with some high density foam strips inside neck, carapace, face, more or less all head insides. Then applied a 2 coats of polyester resign to harden surface, and some gray primer. After that i took piece of pine 6x6cm beam and lathed two pairs of eyes. glued them onto head where were holes in peped sculpture. Added piece of thick foam foa a base.

Applying air drying clay (that was a mistake, now I would use oil based clay for this).

Adding details, and texture for skin and carapace.

Dried out sculpture.

After sculpture dried out, I painted with primer and then with glossy black paint. Added dividing wal in a middle of face and on line where carapace starts.

All three pieces of mold done.

A little bit sanding with 80 grit sandpaper to remove fiberglass sharp fibers. Drilled holes thu all pieces for aliment/joining bolts.

Spiting mold was nerw wracking experience. Good thing sculpture was hollow inside so paper and clay just separated in junction lines of mold.

Inside of sculpture

After removing paper, clay and foam with wooden/plastic scraper, I submerged mold into water to remove last layer of clay and paint.

After cleaning the mold.

Reassembling mold with bunch of wing nuts and M5 bolts

Casting first head cast. First layer of latex.

After few layer of only latex, i added 2-3 layers of gauze where head doesn't move. the i added PVC strips inside carapace for reinforcements and covered then with two layers of latex and gauze.

After trimming flashing on mold lines, cutting open mouth and eyes. Head was commissioned to painted by a miniature painter.

First test fit after painting was done.

After painting and installing a zipper in back side of head, I started strechforming eyes on lathed eyes.

Instaled four one wat poer LED's for eyes.

After head was done (and was waiting for painter to take it) i started making armor from soft EVA foam mats.

All parts were adjusted to fit me quite snugly and reinforced with Foan pieces so they wont lose their shape while fiberglassing.

All pieces were fiberglassed from outside with at-least one or in some places with three layers of 300g/sqm fiberglass mat, and then all pieces were covered with 140g/sqm fiberglass cloth. Inner side of armor were gellcoated with polyesterresigh based gellcoat.

For a body suit i tailored a trico ant then cut (with help of few friends) foam pieces to fit me.

Test fitting with some armor parts and Prothean particle rifle.

After soft suit's foam pieces were done. I ordered a tailor to make a custom muscle suit from those foam pieces, a trico and fabrics that i bought.

Testing armor

Portal Gun (part 2) madness continues

2012-09-05T16:26:00.000+03:00

Long time no see everyone who is reading this blog. So long time ago in 2011 i started making a portal gun. I made some progress from that time.

For more continues and up to date new, photos and other random things pleas 'like' my page on facebook

First i made a rear part (shell) that goes on top of barrel of gun, its just piece of plywood and 3 layers of foam on both sides of it, sanded them to mode or less correct shape then applied chalk based filler to smooth surface and make necessary adjustments

then sanding and filing phase cam. started with 80 grit sanding mesh and went up to 200 grit. after that i rinsed that part to remove all of the dust and primed with green paint (i just had those laying near me) . after paint dried i mixed some polyester resign based putty and started filing all small gaps. sanded with more or less 250 grit sand paper. after shape was more or less ok i added 3 foam pieces where cables connect to. Covered them with putty and sanded them flush with base. After that i painted everything in black with 4 coats of paint, with wet sanding after each coat of paint with 400 - 600 grit sandpaper. Then i used some silicon caulk on half of the part, but forgot to applied a release agent so caulk ruined whole piece and now i am once again in sanding and puttying phase on that piece, also gonna ad some more details to that part as a center hub on top that was just smooth hole now have some ridges inside and also i will add some foam to front of that shell, because i didn't like the shape of it.

Ruined part.

The main barrel with glued inside second pipe and filled wenting holes on it, it looks much better in real life. probably gonna go with some putty and sanding few more times.

painted black and installed a mockup of gloving tube thingie, it is still removable and can be disassembled. i will cast those little discs (in front and back of the barrel) in resign.

Front barrel lathed out of piece of mapple, after turning it on lathe i aplied some wood filled and sanded it wit 200 grit sandpaper.

First coat of paint, grains still visible.

and the final piece that also will be rotocasted to make it holow.

Thats it for now. i will continue on making this prop. I hope it will be convention and for sale ready sometime in 2013 spring

Hello all,
Today i would like to show how i made may Pyramid head costume.
At the end it looked like this:
""click on the pictures to open larger versions""

And here is pics how it went from pieces of cardboard and foam to what you see above

It all started as cardboard base vith layer of foam on top of it.

later i added some pipes, and sculpted valve on a back out of high desity foam. Grid on sides was made out of thick nylon string, hot glued inside hellmet.

Sthis is my shoulder support/back piece. Made out of same foam and few aliuminium vires to give some support for foam, added 2 shoulder pads (used in clothes).

Latter i added few mode walves and details on sides of helmmet and shoulder piece. Closer look on details.

First coat of paint, not so good looking as expected.

Second coat of paint, close but no cigar.

Final coat of paint and loody touches with read paint

And this is houlder pice looked after painting.

Ofcourse not to forget is "Great Knife"

And all together without makeup
