Heart Card

Target has an iTunes gift cards with little headphones in the shape of a heart. So cute. I had to try it out with my classic, “You Rock” gift card holder.

I filled a mason jar with rock candy. But you could also deliver it with Pop Rocks candy, Rocky Road candy bar, Rock Star energy drink, and beyond.

Or get the kids involved and paint rocks for the garden. It’s so easy to improvise!

Restaurant Gift Card

Deliver a restaurant gift card with something that gives you heartburn (such as spicy foods) or something that helps you get rid of it (antacid or Pepto-Bismol). In the example shown, I tied a Chipotle Restaurant gift card to a jar of Chipotle salsa. (A homemade jar of salsa would be even better!)

Candlelight fire instead

Another way to use this tag is to deliver a gift card with a candle, set of matches, or a candle accessory such as a candle sleeve. Any gift card will do since the candle theme will match up nicely with the burning heart idea, but a gift card to the spa would be a fitting touch.

Or a Campfire

Tie a gift card to Bass Pro Shops, REI, or the camping store to a fire starter, stack of firewood, or a handy lighter. Add the “heartburn” tag and you’ll all set.

Chews You Tag

Since I just started selling Digital Downloads to make gift carding easier, I had to take her idea and try it out.

Chew on that!

There are so many cute things that go with the “chew” theme. Start with a restaurant gift card. Then pair it with gum, taffy (as shown), laffy taffy, caramels, or a Charleston Chew candy bar.

Got a baller?

Here’s a fun variation for anyone from a tee-ball player to a major leaguer. Get a gift card to the baseball store (or ballpark) and buy a pack of Big League Chewing Gum. Then attach this “Chews You” tag and you’re all set.

My New Board

I started a Board called Gift Card Holder Inspirations. On this board are all sorts of little gifty ideas that are cute on their own. But I think can easily be turned into Gift Card Gifts.

Add a Gift Card

Take this adorable Gift for the Golfer. It’s a paint can full of golf balls with paper bling all over it. That’s cute. But I’d like to see a GolfSmith Gift Card on top.

Why I like It

Besides the obvious cute-factor. I like this idea because it can easily be converted to any type of ball gift card. Golfing, Tennis, Basketball, etc. Fill the jar with tennis balls, malt balls, gum balls, and beyond. The tag, of course, can read, “Have a Ball on Your Birthday” or whatever it is you choose.

Great Idea For…

This idea is great for birthday, coach’s gift, Father’s Day and any time you want to reward (or say thank you to) someone who is into sports.

Here’s How

• Get a mason jar (I got mine at Walmart), but you could just reach into your cupboard
• Fill jar with gum balls, malt balls, foil wrapped chocolate balls, etc.
• Get a ball-themed gift card like Footlocker, Sports Authority, 24-Hour Fitness, Champs, MLB, Golfsmith, etc.
• Get crafty. Spray paint lid, tie with ribbon. String our “Have a Ball” Gift Card tag on the jar.

So cute. So Easy. What a ball!

But if you know immediately that this is one you are not likely to use (ever), then do something about it right now! Don’t stick it in your wallet for months hoping to feel differently, trade it in for another card or for cash.

Exchange Unwanted Gift Cards

There are many ways to turn a gift card into cash. You won’t get the full value of the card, but getting a high percentage of cash back is better than holding the card indefinitely and getting nothing. Below are two gift card swap sites I’ve used personally:

• Plastic Jungle: Sell your gift cards for cash! Get up to 92% of the balance. You can opt to get paid by check, PayPal, exchange for an Amazon.com gift card.
• Cardpool.com: Sell Your Gift Cards For Cash at Cardpool.com! You only receive payment by check, but you can actually sell the gift card electronically–meaning you can cash it in without sending the physical card.

Sneaky Alternative

If you received a gift card to a store that has a kiosk, then go to the store and use your gift card to buy a new one. For example, if you received a Michael’s Craft Store coupon and you’re crafted out from the holidays, go to Michael’s anyway. But a new gift card from their kiosk and pay for it with the Michael’s gift card. Totally works. Totally legit. More legwork than using a swap website, but you get full value for the card.
