Dinner-and-a-movie tradition can create Valentines memories

Valentine's Day is only about a month away, but it's not too soon to start planning a night out.

I cannot really offer any sound advice about Valentine's Day gifts because I am terrible with gift ideas and, like many guys, I end up going to the store at the last minute.

What I might suggest, though, is some ideas for dusting off the old Valentine's Day standby of a meal and a cinema movie, ideas that could also be used for nights out with or without the rest of your family throughout the year.

Much of my movie going takes place at the modern ShowPlace 10 multiplex in Mattoon, but I like to visit old-fashioned downtown movie theaters whenever I can. These movie theatres may be a bit old fashioned in some cases (aren't we all), but offer plenty of atmosphere and nostalgia.

Downtown business districts and their brick storefronts often host some of the best restaurants in their communities as well, so there is some local flavor readily abound to accompany a night at the cinema.

Champaign's downtown is host to many upscale restaurants, including Carmon's French bistro. I have long been a fan of Minneci's Ristorante and other Italian restaurants that are clustered just to the southeast. A Bombay Indian Grill is also located in this community.

The Virginia Theatre and the Art Theater are both located in downtown Champaign. The grande Virginia features live entertainment and films other than the latest new releases, such as Feb. 13's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".� The Art has an independent focus, and most recently showed "Me and Orson Welles".�

I'm still getting to know downtown Decatur, but I have already become a fan of its Pastabilities Italian Grill. I tried the rich seafood lasagna during my first venture and plan to work my way through some of the other mouth-watering dishes there. Some of the seating areas are sectioned off with screens, creating intimate dining areas.

Downtown Decatur is also the place of The Avon Theatre, which has its massive original screen and two smaller screens. The Avon shows new releases, including art films. I watched "The Aviator" at the Avon, a perfect setting for a historical epic. The Avon is scheduled to show the all-star romance "Valentine's Day" over Valentine's weekend.

Good eating and cinema going can also be found in smaller towns.

My family and I recently took a short road trip to Taylorville to try Gambino's Louisiana Restaurant. We shared a combination platter with gumbo, jambalaya, alligator,etoufee, catfish,shrimp, crawfish tails and beignets. Our food was tasty, and the entrees on the menu looked great as well.

While we were in Taylorville, we headed downtown to watch a cinema movie at the two-screen Kerasotes Cinema. Since then, I spoke with a Taylorville resident who recommended that we should also try Florinda's Italian Ristorante and the 24-hour Dave's Toasty Shop grill downtown.

A dinner and a cinema movie do not necessarily have to be in the same township, either.

We ate lunch and some great pumpkin ice cream this fall in downtown Tuscola at Flesor's Candy Kitchen, which also has a soda fountain and bistro. The display cases there are filled with delicious homemade chocolates and other candy.

Then, we drove 12 miles on U.S. Route 36 and Illinois Route 130 to watch a movie at the two-screen Gemini Cinemas in downtown Villa Grove. Our Flesor's candy corn made a great sweet and salty snack with the Gemini's popcorn.

Old-fashioned, downtown film theaters can also be found closer to home at the Will Rogers Theatre in Charleston, Boarman's Roxy Theatre in Shelbyville and the Paris Theatre. All 3 are located in close proximity to the restaurants around their towns' courthouse squares.

I plan to visit the Roseland Theatre in Pana later this year and I am hoping that the Heart Theatre in downtown Effingham will be reopened someday.

A night out at these film theatres may involve a bit of a drive and seeing a movie that is not the newest of blockbuster, but the visit is worth it.

Each of these theaters has unique character, whether it is architecture, decor or movie selections, that make it unique and will hopefully, in turn, make the night even more memorable.

You've probably heard a lot about electronic readers, one of the hottest gift ideas for this holiday season. The industry will sell approximately 3 million e-readers this year. Today, we'll take a look at this new reading option and whether it's a good alternative for the frugal reader.

The screen of an e-reader isn't like a computer or smartphone; it uses what's called electronic paper technology to show black print on a gray background. You don't get color on an electronic paper screen -- yet. The advantage to this technology is that it's very easy to read, even in broad daylight. Because it isn't backlit like a computer screen, it's also easy on the eyes, and a single battery charge will last for days.

How do you load books onto it? There are two ways. Some e-readers, including the Kindle and the larger format Sony Daily Edition, have a wireless hookup, so you can buy and download books from anywhere without a computer. Other e-readers require you to connect to a computer to download books via the Internet, which is much less convenient. Most e-readers have the capacity to store thousands of books, as well as music and audio books.

Where do you get these books? Each of the major vendors wants you to buy the books, magazines and newspapers from it, in its own special format that will thwart digital pirates. It's not a coincidence that this sounds like Apple's iTunes strategy. But you can download classic books free from Project Gutenberg, and some libraries offer digital loans through third-party companies such as Overdrive in formats these e-readers can display.

What else can an e-reader do? Most will store and play music and audio books like an MP3 player. Some allow you to browse the Internet, although not as fast as you are used to. Some will read the text to you using a computer voice. Some allow you to add notes to what you're reading, or take notes on a blank page.

By next Christmas, you can expect an avalanche of new brands of e-readers offering a wide variety of features, but today the market is dominated by three companies; Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble, and even some of them have trouble keeping units in stock.

Amazon's Kindle has set the standard for the e-reader market. The Kindle 2, about the height and width of a paperback book and the thickness of a Pop-Tart, has a 5-inch screen, while the Kindle DX offers a much larger 9.7-inch screen. Books are easy to read on the Kindle 2, while newspapers and magazines are much easier on the larger screen. Amazon is also trying to break into the school book market, and the larger format would work better there, too.

Sony produces e-readers of the same approximate size, while Barnes & Noble's Nook is comparable to the smaller Kindle, with a small, second color LCD touchscreen instead of the keyboard found on a Kindle.

None of devices are cheap. The smaller Kindle 2 is $259, while the comparable Sony Reader Touch edition is $299, and Barnes & Noble's Nook sells for $259. The larger format Kindle DX is $489, while the similar Sony Daily Edition reader is $399. A protective carrying case can add $25-$50 to the price.

Unfortunately, the Nook, Amazon DX and Sony Daily Reader were back ordered during the Christmas season.

So what's the best choice among the popular e-readers? Since the Nook isn't even available until mid-February, there are at the moment only two choices; the Kindle and Sony. The Sony Reader Touch Edition and its $199 cousin, the Sony Pocket Reader, share one huge disadvantage: You can't download books wirelessly. You have to hook them up to a computer to download books. The Kindle does offer wireless downloads, and it works flawlessly. With Amazon's customer service and comprehensive catalog. Last-minute gift ideas (The Drinker)

I still have some thoughts about my 10 most memorable wines of the year, including a lot of contenders I intend to share that didn't quite make it but are worth mentioning.
But right this moment, unless you're one of those types who bought your 2010 planner around Halloween, you're probably having that last-minute gift freakout.
We've already covered lots of gift ideas this season for the imbiber in your life: books; wines; whiskies and more.
But if you haven't stocked stuffings just yet, I've dug through the pile for a few more quick ideas:

Bubbly wisdom: If you can only dream of real Champagne this year, or if someone you know is looking to geek out, "The Finest Wines of Champagne" (UC Press, 320 pages, $35) is a reliable guide. Part of a series launched by the team at World of Fine Wine, this effort by Michael Edwards provides in-depth profiles of most of the major houses and significant growers, putting faces and colorful details to their labels. For a constantly up-to-date guide to the subject (and a gift you can buy without moving from your computer), I'll again suggest the excellent Champagneguide.net ($89/year), the extensive online guide run by writer Peter Liem, which I've praised before. (Liem, who lives in the Champagne region, is an occasional contributor to The Chronicle.)
Bubbly itself, under $20: It's lovely and timely to have Champagne on hand (some recent recommendations here) but just about any wine with fizz — OK, maybe not those with a plastic top — under twenty bucks will find a happy purpose in the next couple weeks. Open it with eggs, toast being done with shopping, mix it in punch, have a glass with Christmas Day DVDs ... whatever. It's a cost-effective way to add a bit of happy. Cava (I'm partial to Avinyo and Dibon, and Cristalino if I'm under $10) and Prosecco (keep an eye out for Alice, Drusian and Ca'Vittoria) are never a bad idea. Closer to home I'm with many of my fellow wine writers in loving the perennial utility of the Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut, which usually can be found at the closest supermarket in case you suddenly need a house gift.
A good corkscrew: But not an expensive one. For around $10 you should be able to get a hinged waiter's corkscrew (like this), with a Teflon or synthetic worm (the part that goes into the cork) that comes out more easily — and crucially, a hinge on the arm that helps you pull the cork in two easy motions. It might not be the flashiest thing in the stocking, but honestly it's the most helpful and arthritis-preventing thing you can buy the wino in your life. As a bonus, pick up a Screwpull foil cutter (around $7-8) to make your bottles look prettier on the table. Both of these will outlast most of those fancy cork gadgets that get used until about January 8 and then either break or disappear in the Kitchen Drawer of Mystery.
Good bar tools: Because we'll never buy them for ourselves. My revelation this year was the cocktail beaker, which is a pretty great gift for anyone who drinks martinis, Manhattans or Negronis at least once a week. But along with that, consider a good bar spoon that has a bit more heft than the cheap ones — a better shaker set; or a Hawthorn strainer more durable than those in the housewares aisle. The Oxo is a solid pick. Also, if you like citrus in your drinks — or in general — steal one of my gift ideas from a couple years ago and buy a sturdy citrus squeezer. Sur La Table and Cask (17 3rd St., San Francisco) are good starting places for all this. If you really are full up on tools, adorn your bar with inspiration from "Lush Life: Portraits from the Bar", (Mud Puddle Books, 80 pages, $25), a visual trek through the top modern bar characters from Jill DeGroff, wife of cocktail whiz Dale DeGroff. They're basically waxy pipe cleaners, they're way overpriced and a total ripoff (somebody has to pay for all of those TV ads) and I wouldn't doubt for a second that the company's got a bad reputation with the Better Business Bureau . . .

. . . but my daughter LOVES them. Her preschool classmates LOVE them. Her preschool teacher purchased these at a local bed & bath store about a week ago and the kids are having a blast playing with them. Every day I get to see all the new things they've made -- flowers, decorated picture frames, vases, little braided doodads -- all sorts of stuff.

The individual sticks (??) are actually shorter shorter than expected, and you don't get enough of a single color to make an elephant or dog or anything like that, but they do stick together, they stick to a wall and are easily pulled apart and pulled off the wall. Whether they're worth twenty dollars depends on how you determine their value -- For $20, they've provided many hours of entertainment to quite a few kids.

Battle Strikers are a new take on the classic battling tops theme of toys. The Battle Strikers Tournament set comes with everything you need to get started - 2 tops, 2 launchers, the arena, plus the addition of 2 "controllers".

On the top of the tops are 4 areas which contain magnets. These line up with 4 magnets on the bottom side of the launcher. To get the tops spinning, you stick the top to the launcher, pull the trigger, and rev it up. Then you hit the top of the launcher with your other hand to pop the top down into the arena. You have to be carful! These things spin fast, have hard protruding edges, and sometimes hop out of the arena - especially if there's a hard surface (wood table or floor) under it. I recommend placing the arena on carpet to help absorb some of the shock.

The arena is ok - it's fairly thin plastic. If it gets stepped on, it'll probably break, but the tops don't seem to do any damage to it. It has a spot on each side to store 3 tops, so 6 in total. Unfortunately, there's no case, and the tops, launchers, and controls don't "snap" in anywhere. So maybe save the box to put everything in when you're not using it.

The launchers are pretty good. They take 3 AA's each, so you'll need 6 total. The only way to get the tops spinning is with these. There's no rip cord like the old days, and no manual way to crank them up. I do see that sometimes the launchers spin very smoothly, and other times it's rattling like crazy. It can do both with the same exact top, so I'm not sure why. Either way, they do the job, but I think down the line one launcher might become the favorite if the other seems to wear out faster.

The tops are customizable and modular. They come as six parts each. The variations of the parts determine what makes the top better in terms of "Attack", "Defense", and "Control". The widest part of the top is actually two pieces that give different shapes to the areas where the tops collide. The bottom piece is either made of a metal marble or a plastic spindle. The marble gives a more consistent, controllable spin and the top won't wander as much. The plastic spindle makes contact with the ground on a small cylinder. Because of this, if it spins on an angle, it'll run all over the arena. This makes it more aggressive. You can also mix and match the pieces of the different tops.

You control, or steer, the tops by putting the controller thing on your fingers. It contains a magnet in it which attracts the magents on the top surface of the top. In this way, you can help guide your top toward/away from your opponent. You have to get the controller fairly close to the top, and the downside of this is that if you're not careful you end up getting the top stuck to it. When you get close, you can actually feel a little vibration in your fingers as the three outer magnets spin past.

Some watchouts:
-Of the tops included in the set, the green top always seems to win.
-Kids can get hurt with these. My son got hurt a couple times when one bounced out of the arena into his stomach.
-Also, younger kids may have a harder time dropping the top into the arena.
-Anyone that tries to pick one up at full speed will have some sore fingers. Short of taking one to the head, though, and it's nothing that won't wear off after a few minutes.

Overall, the game is very fun. The modular aspect adds some learning and expirimentation aspect for the kids. I did find that the green top usually wins in my set, even after swapping the marble for the spindle. It must just be something about its design. The tops are fairly inexpensive, so they make good impromptu gifts, stocking stuffers, or cheaper items on a birthday list. The instructions say to have each player pick three tops each and play "best 2 out of 3". At fifteen dollars per top, that would put this starter set plus four additional tops at a total of $100. I think that's a bit expensive to get started, so don't feel compelled to buy that much all at once. I definitely recommend getting either this starter set or at least buy the arena. Extra tops can then be purchased later on if your child really shows interest in them.

I bought this camera for my 5 year old because I was scared to death that he was going to destroy my digital camera that he was so fascinated with. This was the perfect solution to my problem. after many years of Monopoly play, the old version has become tired & somewhat boring. this update & makeover makes Monopoly interesting again. at first, the new pieces seem complicated, but once u get into the game, u can see the basic Monopoly game in there.

the ability to buy houses/hotels which are now buildings & skyscrapers right away without owning the whole color group makes the game start up quicker. the new hazards & bonus buildings add an extra dimension for play as well as the new twist for railroads.

my only gripe is the print on the deed & chance cards is rather small.

I have had my grinder for 12 years now. It works the same today as it did new, and I use it about 10 times a week. For the money, it can't be beat. That said, this grinder is not for everybody.

This grinder is perfect for anybody with a coffee maker that uses #4 paper CONE filters (or slightly bigger or smaller). I emphasize PAPER because a permanent filter is not good for this grinder. Like any blade grinder, it will produce some dust. That creeps through the permafilter and into your pot is makes sludge. It sloppies up your coffee. Nothing gets through paper filters though.

It also grinds coffee fine. You really don't have a choice. It is ok for espresso as well if you are not a connoisseur. If you try a coarse grind with this unit, you will be out of luck. If you don't grind long enough, you will leave a few beans whole or in large pieces.

If you need anything other than a fine grind and don't mind using paper filters (I prefer them), then look no further.

I deducted a star because it has limitations, but the truth is, for probably 80% of the coffee drinkers out there, this grinder is all you need.

First off, it's not 11 lbs as the description says more like 2 or 3. Heavy duty construction yet light weight, looks cool, air cooling vents, toaster does not eat up on the exterior, screens holds bread in center so bread toasts evenly, quiet pop-up, toasts quickly, setting for frozen stuff and bagels, settings easily adjusted, etc. This is the one to buy. I've only used it a few times so far, so I don't know how durable it is but so far I'm very impressed. Highly recommended.

On The Priests' sophomore CD, Fathers Martin and Eugene O'Hagan and Father David Delargy tackle another round of soul-stirring hymns and religious music, including How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, the Lord's Prayer and Silent Night. The Lord's Prayer deserves special mention for the powerful a capella rendition; it's the only track not backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, thereby evoking the power and grace of early plainchant. The English-language version of Silent Night opens and closes with a tin whistle and is more traditionally paced than the uptempo version of "O Holy Night" from their debut. The fathers composed the music for "King of Kings" themselves. Nods to their Irish Catholic heritage come in the form of Gaelic Blessing by John Rutter and the lovely Irish Gaelic hymn Bi Iosa Im Chroise (Christ Be In My Heart).

The strongest tracks are those from the Baroque / Classical / Romantic repertoire, including Stozel (Bist du Bei Mir, frequently misattributed to Bach), Pergolesi (Stabat Mater), Vivaldi (Laudamus Te), Mozart (Ave Verum Corpus), Haydn's Te Deum and Mendelssohn (Lift Thine Eyes). This version of Pergolesi's divine Stabat Mater is a bit more uptempo than some of the other versions I own by Andreas Scholl, Cecilia Bartoli and Sara Mingardo, but no less haunting. Much as on their debut, the orchestral backing complements the priests' rich voices without overwhelming, allowing the vocals to shine.

Overall, "Harmony" has much more of a uniform feel than their debut; most noticeably, there are fewer foreign-language songs ("Priests" had two Spanish songs in addition to Latin and Irish Gaelic tracks) and only one Christmas song. The fifteen tracks really shine in the hands of producer Mike Hedges, Fathers Martin and Eugene O'Hagan and Father David Delargy, the Royal Philharmonic, the Brompton Oratory School and Coro. In Father Eugene's words, `I think, because over the last year we have been singing together so much, our voices blend better and our sound has matured. There's an even greater sense of synergy with the voices, and we're more confident too. Even as a professional singer, you never stop fine-tuning the instrument.' "Harmony" is a pure delight and a wonderful gift for those seeking a moment of peace and contemplation in their hectic lives.

"Food & Wine" is a classic doctor's office magazine, particularly if that doctor is a plastic surgeon. The target audience is clearly affluent, but the advice and articles work for most anyone.

The magazine offers a wide-ranging, monthly look at several topics: home; travel; restaurant overviews; general cooking info with recipes and tips on quick meal prep; healthy eating/lifestyle; and a few wine-related articles, including food pairings and an insights into wine types and varietals.

The layout of the magazine is easy on the eyes. The design (photography and text) is in keeping with other magazine of this genre; in short, it is high-quality, but not groundbreaking. For the visually-challenged, though, the font size selection is definitely on the small side. As for the writing, it is neither better or worse than the competition. At between 100 and 120 pages, "Food & Wine" is perhaps a bit skimpy page-wise, but still average for the cover price. And while there are many ads for upper crust products, the magazine wisely clusters them in such a way that articles are less broken up over scattered pages than some other magazines - a nice touch.

The recipes reflect the current trends - multi-ethnic, Puck-ish, and with a bent for unusual pairings of ingredients. But to their credit, a simple scan of the recipes shows few of the bizarre, impossible-to-find ingredients that are the bread and butter of some other gourmet magazines.

Good magazine for a decent price that makes it worthwhile for even us "commoners".

I have been wearing Obsession® by Calvin Klein since it was first launched in 1985, the year I first arrived in California. It seems I am one of those people forever stuck in a time warp and prefer this classic instead of trying new scents. While I prefer the eau de parfum spray I have both variations. Although at first this tends to have a strong aroma, this doesn't last after being applied to your skin. I love the blend of vanilla, mandarin orange, peach and lemon that make up the scent of Obsession®.

My preference is more of a racy, provocative, alluring scent instead of brimming like flowers. With my skin irritations, asthma and allergies I have no problems with spraying my body parts with Obsession®. The color is quite appealing, reminding me of Spiced Rum with the brown, amber and gold tones. Obsession® cologne is suitable for both day and evening wear, indoors and outdoors and those luscious intimate settings.

This is definitely a feminine scent, sweet, sexy and not too fruity or powerful. There is a gold toned rim with the cap snapping on and pulling off most of the time with ease. Sometimes the lid does not go on just right and then the cap part becomes undone and this makes two pieces.

Once the scent has set in for awhile on my skin I detect a hint of floral with wood combination and have read on fragrance.net that Obsession® has oriental spices. It really is a winning combination that has captured my interest over the years. This is a scent that is recognizable by men and women and can be worn through out the seasons.

I would not say this is a musk scent but more of a spicy tingle that needs to be only administered once a day for long lasting appeal. The appeal of Obsession® seems to run from girls in their early twenties to those of us in our early forties, from conservative ladies to party animals.

Although it is a darker color than most fragrances, there is no staining on clothing, but I do not wear sweaters, whites or turtlenecks. When I do use the glass jar I have noticed frequently when standing over the sink the yellowish/brown tint left in the sink and have to rinse it off as well as my finger tips.

Being a new wife who had NO idea how to cook, I started searching the internet endlessly looking for recipes that I could actually serve to my picky, meat and potatos eatin' husband. I came across Ree's blog about a year and a half ago, and have been a daily reader since. She has made cooking fun for me, and not just a chore like I used to think of it. Her charm makes it seem like you're cooking (or in my case, learning to cook) with a friend, rather than just reading a boring description of a recipe. I quickly saw the advantages of the step by step photos that Ree uses on her blog, and also in this cookbook. In most of my cooking expierences, I would always wonder "is this how it's supposed to look?!" or "am I doing this right?". The step by step pictures have eliminated that worry for me. It's wonderful to feel somewhat competent in the kitchen now, and that's all thanks to Ree. I know that if I make one of Ree's recipes, it's guaranteed to be a success.

I think the best part of this cookbook is that the recipes are geared towards the home cook. I often buy cookbooks and usually there are only a handful of recipes that I would even try to serve to my family. With this book, I could see myself serving every one. And of course, they are delicious - and that's really the most important part.

The movie was good, a few bad lines, but mostly the editing was really off, they shouldn't have cut the time down to under 2 hours and made it a PG-13 flick. That was a big mistake, that's like making Rambo a G-rated film, it's just not right. Christian Bale is good as John Connor, he gives an alright performance, but he could have done a little better. Anton Yelchin (Young Kyle Reese) did a superb job portraying the young hardened soldier who will eventually go back to protect young Sarah Connor, but not in this film.

The movie is good, but due to editing and script changes here and there, caused the movie's poor performance at the box office. It's still a good film to watch, it gives us a fresh new look at the world post Judgment Day. It's NO James Cameron film by a long shot, but still decent with good action. Just don't expect to follow the plot as it has it's ups and downs by the different writers that wrote the screenplay.

Expect a future blu-ray/dvd Terminator Salvation: Extended Cut (I don't know what they will call it) to contain most of the deleted scenes 30-40 mins worth with the original ending and an alternate storyline to debut sometime in late 2010. It's an alternate version of the film, much like Donner's Superman II cut.

I was looking for a heated seat cushion for my Subaru Forester to go through the hard winters we have here in Michigan. This one sold by Amazon is a winner! I honestly haven't found a better price, even for similar brands, around the net. I paid $17.99 (october 2006) for it plus free shipping since I bought more stuff to go over $25. Anyways...

This heated cushion is pretty powerful and I usually set it to HI just to warm up quickly and 5 minutes later I switch it to LOW or OFF because it's hot enough. Most of the time I just let it on LOW mode and it's pretty comfortable.

If you're looking for something that you don't need to pay an arm and a leg for it, but still does its job of keeping your bottom toasty, you should give this product a try.

After 14 years of service my Victorinox mini-Swiss Army Knife (SAK) has finally begun to show its age: the toothpick went missing, the enamel casing cracked, the insignia fell off. So I've bought another (the original sits in a drawer, its knife blade as sharp as ever, the screwdriver still perfectly utile, the scissors are gummed up but could probably be cleaned out with some rubbing alcohol).

For versatility and simplicity it's hard to beat this item. Sure there are SAKs with more blades and tools, but the simple knife/screwdriver/scissors combination is going to meet the vast majority of your needs (ok, it doesn't have a bottle opener: use a door strike plate, MacGyver). The toothpick is so-so, but I can't count the number of times I've needed to tweeze something and used the SAK tweezers when I couldn't find the bathroom set. The key fob, while not the most exciting of features, does provide a convenient way to carry the SAK around with you.

This item is sure to please. I love mine. You'll love yours. Buy one for someone else - they'll love theirs.

Thick and warm...and a great value!
I saw many microfleece robes available before deciding on this one. Some were overpriced, some were thin and cheaply made, some were both. This robe has gorgeous color, is made from thick material, and is very soft. I bought it as a gift, but I'm tempted to keep it for myself!

I find this perfume to be quite interesting and like nothing else I own. I usually wear Noa (cacharel), Une Fleur (chanel), or Pure Grace (philosophy), so I normally like a light floral scent. I was really excited about trying this when it came out, but the first time I smelled this from the bottle, it did not appeal to me, which was a surprise after hearing Oprah rave about it. The second time I thought what the heck and put some on in the store. I found that this perfume develops into quite a "lovely" and sensual fragrance once it has time to interact with your body chemistry. What counts is that my husband likes it on me, just to note: he did not like it when he smelled it straight from the bottle either. This perfume lasts a long time, which is not a surprise since it is eau de parfum. If you are thinking about it, try it out and see how it smells on you because that is what really counts.

There are many kinds of truth. There are truths based on facts, truths based on faith, and truths based on something that sounds as if it should be true (truthiness). Then there's the kind of truth we find in Sarah's book: stories and concepts that become truths simply because she states them. She's a lot like our Lord and Savior, Glen Beck, in that respect.

Sometimes, she states truths that would be considered ludicrous if uttered by someone else. Her claim that the McCain campaign forced her to spend $150,000 in RNC funds to dress her family in designer clothes is one example of that. Although it might be easier to believe that she acted like a trailer park Zsa Zsa who'd found a credit card left behind at a possum feed, she blames McCain staffers. That's good enough for us, because we have faith; we want to believe her truths.

But the book isn't perfect. As much as I enjoyed the few short paragraphs in which Mrs Palin laid out her policy objectives, she could have condensed it all into one sentence: "I'm going to grab an Oxo Good Grips Stainless Serving Spatula and go all mavericky on your non-white, non-Christian and non-heterosexual butts."

The book also fails to expose Mrs. Palin's intellectual brilliance and keen grasp of foreign policy issues. Why wasn't the text of her recent speech in Hong Kong included? Although it remains secret, it's rumored that she viciously rebuked the Vietcong king for his assault on the Empire State Building. That's a speech we've been waiting for nearly 75 years to hear. It's big news and should have been included.

As you read other reviews of this book, please remember that Mrs. Palin has many enemies who are eager to pan her work. The Palin family's most potent nemesis, Levi's johnston, is no dpubt fully erect and ready to spew globs of misfortune upon them for a third time. And reason-adoring intellectuals are certain to point out that an interview on Good Morning Topeka doesn't qualify as a policy summit in the Far East.

But a few bad reviews won't stop her. She's seen much worse from her kitchen window. It can't be pleasant to gaze upon Antichristograd every morning as you brew your coffee.

My review isn't complete, but I think I'll quit anyway, because writing reviews, like governing, is just too darned hard to finish.

The Wife Says "Best Ever" For Her...., July 22, 2006

This hair dryer is the third in a series of attempts to find the right hair dryer for my wife, who has long thick hair. The first one was a Vidal Sassoon that had ionic technology, but didn't get near hot enough. She was drying her hair for > 20 minutes.

The second attempt was the Revlon RV469 ceramic, which was much quieter and got hotter, but didn't have much air flow. Also, it is quite heavy. It was better than the first dryer, but not hair drying nirvana.

This dryer (Revlon RV544) has easily cut my wife's drying time in half. She has very thick & long hair, and the high heat setting makes quick work of it. It gets hot enough that I actually tone it down to warm for myself (I have short, thick hair) whenever I have to use the dryer. I think the air flow settings are perfect. The dryer is also nice and light, and fits in a bathroom drawer easily, unlike some of the bulkier models out there.

My wife thinks this is the best dryer she has ever had. We highly recommend it.

The Oral B Vitality Dual Clean toothbrush performs like many of the $100+ power brushes but at a fraction of the cost. I started using mine about a month before my most recent dentist visit and noticed a definite improvement in my brushing results, both above and below the gumline.

Brushing with the Dual Clean takes a little getting used to. First, it's a different technique than regular brushes - you simply glide the brush along your teeth and gums rather than scrubbing back and forth. The fast pulsation of the head takes care of that for you. Once you get use to this new technique, it makes for a very comfortable brushing experience; however, I did experience some minor bleeding for the first few days of use. Second, the power of the motor means that the vibration is intense until you get accustomed to it. I experienced this as a severe tickling sensation in my nose and palate for the first week or so of use. It also includes a simple timer that momentarily revs the motor to notify you when you've brushed for the prescribed two minutes.

This package includes a handle, a charging base and a cleaning head, so it's ready to use out of the box. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so there's no need to keep feeding it AAAs. On the downside, this makes the handle rather bulky, although its rubberized grip makes it easy to manage.

Over the long run, the Dual Clean has proven to be well-constructed, having survived being packed away for several trips (battery life is good enough that you won't even need to bring the charger unless you plan on being away at least a week). Maintenance is simple - both the handle and head are easy to keep clean by simply rinsing after each use. Unfortunately, the initial value that this unit offers is diminished by the relatively high cost for replacement heads.

Overall, the Vitality Dual Clean does an excellent job of cleaning your entire mouth - my dentist said as much. It's also dependable and very affordable, making it a great buy. The sensation of a power toothbrush may not suit everyone's tastes, but at this price, it's easy to see for yourself.

The price of the SD4/4GB card jumps around a lot here. It is a great value at $20. Not so hot at $40. Wait a while and it may go down again. Note that only newer SD devices can use the 4GB SDHC cards. Older cameras, etc. can only use regular SD cards up to 2GB. If you're not sure, check your owner's manual or contact your manufacturer. Also, older SD card readers will not work with SDHC cards, but SDHC card readers are available for about $10 on amazon.com

3. Star Trek (Three-Disc +Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (2009)

The Blu should keep everyone happy...great product, November 13, 2009

The minor disappointments I had with some little items are buried by the amount of great things that is the Star Trek Blu. The packaging is the single hinged chassis with cardboard slip cover, but the info sheet (typical rear cover art) is a hot-glued paper that cannot fit anywhere once it comes off. The resulting Blu art front is a head shot of Pine and the back is Quinto.

The picture is as good as would be expected, with plenty of great space effects, the heavy lens glare that Abrams likes does not bleed too bad but ILM does not disappoint. They went with TrueHD which gives an adequate immersion, some of the best tests were with Spocks ship and that unique sound (but 7.1 DTS would have been nice). Plenty of reference points throughout, but even with that clarity I still couldn't get a read on some of the little things (tried freezing the fence signs in the Corvette scene, freezing some of the panel displays to read what the actors were looking at, etc.). But what takes the time and is worth every moment for the supplement geeks like me is the entire disc 2.

Disc 1: Menus are unfortunately only minimal still animation (no live action or HD pics).
Commentary by the makers.

Disc 2: Blue screen animated left sided selections. Most items pop up with an "extended" option that has an icon appear when watching each documentary to facilitate viewing little snippets of additional material, or each one can be watched individually - no play all on anything with this disc.

* 16:41 To Boldly Go. Several extensions including the Kirk dilemma (1:58), more Green Girl stuff (3:25). The main piece covers aspects of creation, whys and what fors. All of these supplements are HD interviews of the filmmakers spliced with low def footage (past and present Treks).

* 28:53 Casting. Once again all HD present footage mixed with grainy low def shots of behind the scenes - gives some good material on why we saw who we did.

* 24:33 Starships. Concepts, art design and some of my favorite stuff on the making of regarding construction. Seven extensions are selectable here including Warp Drive and Paint stuff.

* 16:30 Aliens. Shows the meetings and thought process behind some of the critters and humanoids. Five extensions here.

* 16:10 Planets. Some nice history for Trek regarding the Vasquez Rocks, which showed an obvious deleted sequence - made me look forward to those even more.

* 9:22 Props and Costumes. One extension here about Klingons - which led to another whole deleted sequence I was now REALLY wanting to watch them.

* 9:45 Sounds. I enjoyed this one the most as the sounds intrigued me when I first saw this in theaters. Nice homage/respect paid to the old series connections.

* 8:47 Gene Roddenberry vision. A nice history with at least half of it being Nimoy narrating/being interviewed (there was a blatant absence of someone here but you will notice that through this entire set).

* 13:30 Deleted Scenes - FINALLY. Play all option with commentary on/off of Abrams, Kurtzman.
- Spock's birth. Throughout all of these you notice Winona's entire screen time was removed. Nice little plug on how he gets his name.
- Klingon battle with the Narada, effects unfinished - which leads into an entire storyline removal - did not agree with the reasons for the removal but oh well.
- Dysfunctional home life of the early Kirk sequence. Explains who that kid was on the road and who the voice was on the car phone.
- Spock's parents arguing about which side Spock should embrace.
- Klingon Prison Planet sequence - wow. I want this in the director's cut. Would have explained a great deal of how Nero and the Narada disappeared.
- Vulcan sequence prior to destruction (Vasquez Rocks).

Overall, I had a great time going through all of this and I honestly think even the discerning Trekkie will be happy with this product. Yes, I feel the deleted scenes should have been left in as they explained some obvious gaps in the film, but at least we got to see them. The HD screenings have been very popular and I don't tire of watching this through and through. Enjoy.

Here are the pros/cons.
Pros:
1) Excellent shave, although I couldn't tell the difference between it and the Mach 3 power in a controlled experiment where I shaved half my face with each one.
2) Swivel mechanism is better than M3
3) Great sturdy design
4) low battery indicator

Cons:
1) Bigger than the M3 (not by much), but enough to make shaving under the nose harder than with the M3. The trimmer is single blade and not very useful.
2) Different blade design means you can't use M3 blades. For several generations in the past, you could have used the previous blades.
3) Shave similar to M3 (see above).

So there you have it. Some boyfriends gift ideas for that special man in your life for a measly 20 bucks. Of course, we all know these are only the types of gifts you use as your stocking fillers, right?
