Nazareth are one of the UK’s finest ever classic rock bands. The band are perhaps best known for their breakthrough albums, ‘Razamanazz’ and ‘Loud n Proud’- (both 1973) and their chart-storming singles, ‘Bad Bad Boy’, ‘Broken Down Angel’ , ‘Love Hurts’, ‘My White Bicycle’ and their remarkable adaptation of Joni Mitchell’s ‘This Flight Tonight’. Since then the band have released a steady stream of top-notch albums and retained a steadfast, almost rabid fan base across the world.

Nazareth has sold an impressive over 60 million records in their 40 year music career worldwide for which they count as one of the best known and most successful Scottish bands ever. On their new album ‘Big Dogz’, they have returned to their roots, pure rock music with its rough edges, like it’s straight from the ‘70s. Exactly how rock should sound – and that’s how Nazareth lays it down.

An excellent overview of the bands career is the current sumptuous 4-cd Salvo/Union Square Music release, ‘NAZ BOX’

Said NAZARETH founder member Pete Agnew:Our friends at earMUSIC offered us the opportunity to mark some new territory with this new album and the 'Nazhounds' are delighted to be back among their pack. We're straining at the leash to tour this puppy. We reckon it's bitchin'! So get ready, because from 10th March, the Big Dogz gonna howl!!"

Support for the England portion of the tour (except Bilston) is the Bowden Williamson Band, featuring Animals & Friends guitarist, John Williamson – recently seen across the UK alongside Stax and Blues Brothers legend, Steve Cropper. Special Guest at Bilston is Deborah Bonham

Formed in 1968, Nazareth sprung from the ashes of a semi-professional local band, ‘The Shadettes’, eventually taking their name from the opening line from ‘The Weight’ - the classic song by The Band. Releasing their first album in 1971, the band still features the gravel-voiced DAN McCAFFERTY and bassist PETE AGNEW, alongside lead guitarist JIMMY MURRISON and LEE AGNEW who has more recently taken over the drum stool for so long occupied by the sadly departed DARRELL SWEET.

For their 40th anniversary, Naz decided to record a come-back album. earMUSIC released ‘The Newz’ in 2008, proving once again that Nazareth is fully committed to rock and always satisfy with great songwriting and a fresh sound. The contemporary production brilliantly held true to their roots and really emphasize the extraordinary voice of Dan McCafferty.

‘Big Dogz’ was recorded in Prague and mixed in Basel, produced by guitar player Jimmy Murrison and young Swiss sound-wizard Yann Rouiller, the album has a challenging approach to production. In contrast with rock music’s current tendency to be clean and overproduced in order to be perfect and easily consumed, Nazareth´s album focuses on capturing the dangerous and challenging edge that rock music should have, too often lost in the chase for perfection. For this reason, Nazareth have always truly concentrated on bringing out that dirty, challenging, edginess of real rock; that sound that rock music must have.

Nazareth really manages to be different. On the new album, you’ll find what the band has always portrayed: four guys who live rock, who record together in the same room to show who they really are and what they want.

‘Big Dogz’ is a pure rock diamond, one that is sure to become one of the highest points of their grandiose career and follow the success of past albums like ‘No Mean City’ and ‘Hair Of The Dog’.

Founding member Pete Agnew says: "They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but having recorded the new album 'Big Dogz' I don't agree. We've got some tasty bones here!”
The Burton Agnes Jazz and Blues Festival returns for its sixth year set in the award winning grounds and Elizabethan Hall of Burton Agnes, East Yorkshire, YO25 4NB. Organised by the Hall’s sax-playing owner, Simon Cunliffe-Lister, the festival runs over three days showcasing some of the UK’s hottest jazz and blues acts in the most stunning and serene of surroundings.

“Possibly the most enjoyable jazz concert I've ever attended.” The Independent

Grammy nominated and multi award winning Stacey Kent, including the British Jazz Award and BBC Jazz Award for 'Best Vocalist', is a sublime singer, rightly famed for her peerless interpretations of the Great American Songbook, but equally adept singing in French or Portuguese. Her beautiful tone and wonderful phrasing bring a fresh beauty to everything she sings and she sings from the soul. She tells us her stories with
faultless phrasing and a lucid, enchanting voice and it is her beautiful version of Hushabye Mountain that has bewitched TV viewers on the recent Dreams Bed campaign. After eight studio albums, her current album Dreamer In Concert is her first live album and the first album that captures her magical onstage persona.

Burton Agnes Jazz and Blues Festival are delighted to announce that Stacey will headline their festival on the main stage - Saturday 7th July. "Stacey Kent is a revelation. There is nobody singing today who can compare with her. She has the style of the greats, like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. And she sings the words like Nat Cole - clean, clear and almost conversational with perfect phrasing. And that's as good as it gets."

Three-time Oscar-winning songwriter, Jay Livingston

"Devastatingly stylish...a beauty in any circumstances" The Observer

"A delight" The Guardian

More artists are to be confirmed over the coming weeks.

Held over three days, with performances both inside the stately Elizabethan Hall and outside in the Hall’s beautiful grounds, the Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues festival presents a varied line up of funk, traditional jazz, hard blues, dreamy vocals and everything in between.

“Tis the musical equivalent of a Sunday stroll through the grounds of a stately home… you won't find more beautifully serene surroundings this side of Woodstock for such an experience” All Gigs - Festival review
The main stage on the lawn hosts the festival’s headline acts. With rolling fields behind and pristine woodland to the side, you couldn’t ask for a more stunning setting for some of the UK’s top Jazz and Blues artists to perform. Inside the Hall, intimate acoustic performances mix with original Elizabethan carvings and French Impressionist art to create an inimitable festival experience.

On Friday and Saturday evening the Wolds Top beer tent plays host to the Beverley Arts Trust’s late night sessions of folk, jazz and rhythm ‘n’ blues.Local food and drink feature heavily at the festival. At the tea tent and food lawn, festivalgoers can indulge in home-baked treats, barbecued local meats, freshly prepared curries, and salads grown in the neighbouring walled garden. In the beer tent award winning Wold Top beer is on tap, brewed just five miles away from the festival site.

A campsite in the field adjacent to the Hall offers welcome hot showers and panoramic views of the Yorkshire Wolds for those wishing to pitch a tent for a night or the whole weekend.Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival welcomes families of all ages with its safe, easy-going vibe. There is plenty on offer for children including a Children’s Corner with play area, 15 acres of magical gardens to explore including a walled garden with maze, jungle garden and giant games and a woodland walk with forest creatures to find. Free face painting and balloon artistry caps off the entertainment.

Built between 1598 and 1610 by Sir Henry Griffith, Burton Agnes Hall is an Elizabethan stately home that has stayed within the Cunliffe-Lister family for more than four hundred years. Fifteen generations have filled the Hall with treasures, from magnificent carvings commissioned when the Hall was built to French impressionist paintings, contemporary furniture, tapestries and other modern artwork in recent years.

The charm of the house is that it is clearly a loved and lived in home and visitors are welcomed openly by the family in joining them to spend many enjoyable hours at Burton Agnes Hall.

Burton Agnes Hall ranks among the finest, and best presented, houses in England. It is the perfect English house, embodying the climax of the final great age of domestic architecture’Simon Jenkins, Chairman of the National Trust, journalist and author of England's Thousand Best Houses
“What the XXXX is Butlins ?” So asked Dee Snider, after Twisted Sisters opening number back in 2008 (at the inaugural Hard Rock Hell) in Minehead. I shall tell you what Butlins is. It is an excellent venue, for a weekends entertainment, every January with an array of Rock and Blues bands over a three day period, with good accommodation, and superb food. A win win situation. With a favoured eye toward Blues on the main stage, there is a good selection of Rock on offer in “Reds” next door.

Friday 27 Jan
To begin our tour de force, we opted to watch former Argent guitarist John Verity on the main stage. The set consisted mainly of classic rock and blues numbers including Hoochie Coochie Man, Rocky Mountain Way, Cocaine, Purple Haze and Old Time Rock n Roll. An excellent opening act, the John Verity Band set us up nicely for the legends that are Ten Years After.

What a big disappointment. I had been expecting TYA to be the band of the festival, and greeted their entrance with suitable applause and enthusiasm. Alas, ten minutes in, a prolonged drum solo followed shortly after by a sales pitch for Cds and tshirts was a sign of things to come. In full flow they sounded very together and a great unit, but dogged by a poor sound on vocals (speakers blown evidently), I along with most of the audience were getting restless. With no rendition of their better known material ( I’m Going Home, Hear Me Calling) they suddenly upped and disappeared, “just like that”.

Toward the tail end of TYA, I popped next door to witness one number from Roger Chapman (Shadow on the Wall ) The place was rocking, and seemed so much more energetic, but then after what had gone before (TYA) on the main stage, it didn’t take much.

So... we moved into “Reds” for our final band of the night. Selecting “Reds”, as much for atmosphere, as the band scheduled. Alas this meant missing Chantel McGregor yet again, but if this Virgil and his thingamajig’s where not up to much, we could always return to main stage. That was to prove unnecessary.

Thank God for Virgil and the Accelerators ! Hailing originally from South Africa this power trio still in teens or thereabout, are akin to a 2012 reincarnation of Cream, influenced by Clapton, Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. They are Virgil McMahon (Guitars), Gabriel McMahon (Drums) and Jack Timmis (Bass/vocals). Their set included tracks from the debut album “The Radium” (Which sold well along with t shirts, post gig) and many a classic rock/blues number , including “Are You Experienced”. Over the years I have seen many a renowned guitarist, Randy California, Alvin Lee, Robin Trower, Jimmy Page etc, etc. It has been a long, long time since I have been so impressed as I was with not only Virgil, but the Accelerators as well. Band of the weekend.

Saturday 28 Jan
Following a browse around the Butlins site in glorious winter sunshine, I popped into the Blues stage (main stage) shortly after noon to witness the opening of Steve Rodgers solo set. Warmly embraced by a reasonably sized audience, Steve’s competent and laid back delivery was just what was required as hangovers and aging rockers attempted to greet the day ahead. Alas, and apologies, I headed to our apartment (note... apartment, not chalet ), to watch a movie and make Zzzs.

It almost seems unfair to say, with Deborah Bonham you know what you are going to get. But what you do get is an excellent set from one of the UKs best rock and blues vocalists. Special mention must go to her, often overshadowed band, but never under rated, perfectly complimenting Deborah’s vocals. “Killing Fields”, “ The Old Hyde” and Zeps “Rock n Roll” were highlights of a most acceptable show.
Next up, I was faced with a dilemma. Argent or The Animals ? Fortunately, Argent where due on stage about 15 minutes prior to the Animals, so I could gauge accordingly.

Looking remarkably fresh faced and keen, all four original members of Argent took to the stage amid enthusiastic embrace. However, for this member of the assembled throng, the slightly self indulgent and overly postured delivery, specifically from Rod Argent, during first 20 mins or so, was a tad irritating, hence my wife and I headed for the main stage. ( My friend remained, a long time Argent aficionado who informed me as gig progressed so did the enjoyment, with God Gave Rock n Roll, Hold Your Head Up, Since You’ve Been Gone etc keeping all present suitably appreciative ).
Meanwhile, my wife and I were enjoying an admittedly standard, but most acceptable set from the Animals. Having seen John Steel, Mickey Gallagher and bass/vocalist Peter Barton three times in two years, I cannot get enough. The music of the Animals is simply wonderful, and despite almost always finishing in a clichéd singalong at times, I’ll always come back for more.

So a second, but minor, dilemma. Never a great fan of Wishbone Ash, my colleague in crime, is. However, he in turn isn’t a big Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash fan, so we crept into the main hall packed to the rafters to give Larry Miller (The Larry Miller Band) a chance.

“Its Miller Time” announced our soon to be hero, dressed in a jacket akin to Jimi Hendrix or is that Adam Ant? Larry Miller stormed into a superb heavy blues performance that along with his wonderful personality sent everyone back to their accommodation with ears and hears a buzzing. Red House, Delilah (see You Tube), Blues Man etc. Look out for Larry, yeah, Larry... he’s a mate now, or he feels like one, on tour now. Fantastic.

Sunday 29th Jan
Spent a jolly morning on the water slides, revisiting a long lost youthful enthusiasm, as I tried to get to the steps ahead of anyone else, though I ached a bit later on. A laid back pint or two in Sun and Moon bar was followed by a walk on the beach. Alas, this was at the cost of missing Gerry McEvoy’s Band of Friends, ex members of Rory Gallagher.... I heard they were wonderful. I must try harder.
Final night. Skinny Molly opened proceedings in Reds. This meant missing The Hamsters farewell gig in the main room, but the queue for that had started about 2 hours earlier. Skinny Molly inevitably finished with Freebird, but provided all with a very enjoyable array of Southern rock preceding their finale.

FM always bemused me. Well received and highly acclaimed, it speaks volumes when I realised I had seen them back in the 90’s at Buckley, but forgot. They are talented, no doubt. They are enthusiastic. But something is missing to hold one attention for long, they seem to lack a stage presence. I apologise to those who follow the band, but, sorry it just seems bland and a tad tiresome.

Popped into the main stage to catch a little of a band I saw several times in their hay day, Doctor Feelgood. The audience was huge, the atmosphere hot ,and the place bouncing. The music.... err, forgive me... awful ! Now I hasten to add, I suspect I may be in a minority of one here. I asked a few punters at the urinals what they thought of the band. “ Great”, “Awesome”, Fantastic” came their response... as I stood, somewhat bemused. I was present for two classics “ Roxette” and “Milk & Alcohol”, but to me, from where I stood, mediocre at best.

One band left. I was looking forward to Swedish girl band Crucified Barbara, as I have always been a sucker for female rockers since seeing the Runaways open Erics in Liverpool and similarly Girlschool, Suzi Q, and Hysterica. I wasn’t expecting much, but to all intent and purpose CB where the only metal band on this year’s line up. They delivered. No more, no less. Looking good, not great, the highlight was a rendition of Motorhead’s Killed By Death. Not the worst way to end a most enjoyable weekend.
And that was Butlins 2012.
See you there in 2013.
Two years ago I swore that I'd stop going to see bands that covered other's songs. Many evenings cringing at endless efforts to make 'Alright Now' sound interesting just became boring and before it drove me to slashing my wrists, I decided the best plan would be to just avoid that sort of thing all together.

Curiosity brought me to see Mothership in Birkenhead. I've seen many (many!) covers and tribute bands over the years but not one of them who solely did Zeppelin songs. I thought this ambitious and I was intrigued to see just how the band would fare with such a varied catalogue to choose from.

The venue was the perfectly formed, and under imminent threat of closure, Pacific Road Arts Centre in Birkenhead. I have seen quite a lot of bands here; it is a fantastic venue, with good sound, lighting and friendly staff (the beer isn't bad either).

With no support band, Mothership came on stage early and promised a set of over two hours. Quite a good crowd had braved the cold and expectation was high. The band launched into their set. What followed was a mountain of nostalgia spanning the Zeppelin releases and chronicling the good and the best of what they were all about. Heavy blues, interdispersed with rock (and folk); it was all there. I was surprised to hear 'Custard Pie', not that this is a bad song, more that it is not one of the more 'popular' Zeppelin songs (I've always liked it though). The guitar and bass were solid from the off and the vocals improved after a quiet start as the set moved on. The sound was unfortunately not perfect; walking around the venue I found that there were pockets where it was distorted and others were it was just not loud enough. Apart from that (and the mid-set hiccup with the acoustic instruments, the band gave a very solid performance.

Not restricted by the studio versions of songs, Crilly and company, dipped into the live recordings to interpret some of the classics. I loved the version of 'Black Dog' and the virtuoso pieces of 'The Lemon Song' and .Heartbreaker'. The delivery of 'Since I've Been Loving You' was excellent and brought back memories of learning to play this note for note over a very long weekend.

Unexpected songs included 'Immigrant Song' and 'Going to California', though these too were delivered expertly; the rhythm section giving a solid backbone to the meanderings of guitar and vocals. The ambitious 'Kashmir' was a success; competent, moody and driving, the audience could only wallow in the layers of sound. Yes, the inevitable were included. 'Whole Lotta Love' went down a storm and 'Stairway To Heaven' was done with panache.

Overall, Mothership nailed it. A very enjoyable set of classic rock, delivered with great competence and more than just jogging the memory of a very appreciative audience.. A Led Zeppelin tribute? Yes, and a damn good one at that. I must start looking at some more tribute bands.....
I remember listening to Argent albums whilst back at school, which was a seriously long time ago. I was looking forward to this gig as I only saw part of the set when the played High Voltage back in 2010.

They opened the night with 'It's Only Money Pt1 & Pt2' featuring a superb Hammond organ solo from Rod. Then we were treated to the lesser known songs such as 'Celebration' and 'Keep on Rollin’', which both sounded fresh, heavy and downright proggy. ‘Be Free' and 'Sweet Mary' from the 'Ring of Hands' LP followed. Some of the songs were being played for the first time live on the night, we were privileged indeed. It was great to hear stories from the seventies as each of the songs were introduced. We heard how Rod Argent had his first Rolls Royce at the age of 17, financed from the royalties of 'She's Not There'; which was a top ten hit for the Zombies in the USA. Then they played a blinding version of 'Liar' which was a massive hit for Three Dog Night ,again in the USA. Next up was 'I Don't Believe In Miracles', a Russ Ballard song which was a big hit for Colin Blunstone; here Russ joined Rod Argent on keyboards one. One starts to realise that Russ Ballard has written some great songs for other artists as you recognise the intro of 'Since You've Been Gone' which was a massive hit for Rainbow back in 1979. They saved their biggest hit till the end. 'Hold Your Head Up'; a magnificent rendition with the audience singing their hearts out.

For the inevitable encore they came back and played the unforgettable anthem that is 'God Gave Rock 'n Roll To You' which was written back in 1973 and better known to a younger generation as a Kiss song. Argent as a band were sounding and looking good; entertaining the crowd with so many classic songs......Brilliant

Chickenfoot : Manchester Academy1 12th January 2012

I was looking forward to, for what was for me, the first gig of 2012 ,Chickenfoot promoting their latest second album...Chickenfoot III. Chickenfoot is an American supergroup consisting of Sam Hagar and Michael Anthony, both former members of Van Halen, solo guitarist JoeSatriani and on drums Kenny Arnoff for this tour as Chad Smith had other commitments with The Chili Peppers.

A packed sell-out show at The Manchester Academy, as they are only playing two UK shows on this leg of their European tour; a rare visit to this country by Hagar. Joe Satriani came on stage to play the intro of 'Lighten Up' and was joined by the rest of the band. So much energy from the outset. Two more tracks followed from the new album; 'Alright' and the rockin 'Bigfoot'.

The songs sound so good live. Wow, this is undoubtedly a real supergroup in action; loud, heavy and clearly enjoying themselves. They played most of the tracks from the latest album, one of the many highlights being 'Three And A Half Letters' which touchingly deals with unemployment in the USA. 'Down The Drain' is anothe rterrific song which turned into an awesome jam session with each membe rof the band taking their turn in the spotlight. They slowed things down with the powerful rock ballad 'Come Closer' and they finished off the set with 'Future In The Past' with Sam Hagar strapping on his Les Paul showing us he can play a mean guitar. Of course there's an encore as no ones going anywhere. 'Oh Yeah' was the band's response and the evening closed with a fantastic cover of Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady'.

This was one hell of a Rock n Roll show; they deserve to be called a supergroup. Hopefully they'll return to play some festivals this summer......don't miss them.

Deaf School . Inevitably, what was my last gig of 2011, and possibly the last concert ever at the excellent Pacific Road venue in Birkenhead (although I understand some gigs may take place before April) was a triumph. Deaf School took to the stage to a surprisingly less than sell out audience in confident and festive mood. From the off, Bette Bright , Enrico Cadillac, Cliff Hanger, The Rev.Max Ripple et al performed an embracing and engaging set from start to finish, the audience was both won over, and more importantly, engaged with the band. After all its Friday, its Christmas, and its Deaf School playing in their backyard.

Both Deaf School aficionados, and first timers, embraced a wonderful evening of Deaf Schools classic expressive style. Rock, Jazz, Blues, Metal, Punk, Lounge , Art, how do you describe Liverpools favourites from the 1970s punk era ? All the favourites included, “Taxi”, Rock Ferry”, “2nd Honeymoon”, “Hi Jo Hi”, a brief appearance of Suggs, Bettes husband of near 30 years, added to a most satisfying end to my concert going of 2011.

Two encores were demanded, and duly enjoyed, before a rendition of “Jingle Bells” brought proceedings to a close. My last sighting of Deaf School was way back in 1976 at another long lost Birkenhead venue, “Mr Digbys”, hopefuly, this is not the end of the Pacific Road as a concert venue, but we shall see. .... if it deems to be so...“What a Way To End It All” !!!
Indeed the fact that you find such a core mix of key ex-members from over 40 plus years is a testament to just how much validity they have to claim that heritage.

Nik Turner, Alan Davey, Harvey Bainbridge, Steve Swindells, Jerry Richards, Danny Thompson and the delightful mess that is Ron Tree have all made significant contributions to the heady history of this most beloved of space rock bands, none more so than Nik Turner who (love him or hate him) embodies the spirit of the original line-up more than any other. Alan Davey and Harvey Bainbridge are key ex-members who helped develop the band thorough several different era’s and styles so there is no doubt that they have all the knowing ingredients to make your trip a pleasant one.

Their gig in Liverpool the previous year focused on the legendary Space Ritual tour / album so I was intrigued as to what would be offered this time around. This was also the opening night of a 14 date UK tour so most people would be second guessing as to what was in store; would Nik Turner resemble an alien on roller skates? Would Ron Tree even make it?!

These questions were answered immediately as the band took to the stage and after some initial pre-amble ripped into the Robert Calvert era classic ‘Death Trap’, the ageless Nik Turner looking rather cool and very together it has to be said, tooting away merrily on his sax and acting as unofficial conductor for this Hawkestra. Ron Tree on the other hand took a while to settle down as he waded through his pile of lyrics (he later cried wolf and blamed someone else for messing them up), causing laughter from the band and audience alike, a loveable guy but he must be a nightmare to manage!

They then raised the bar further as a pulsating ‘You Shouldn’t Do That’ had everyone dancing, bordering on the hypnotic it conjured images of a bygone age and only the absence of Stacia reminded you this was 2011 and not 1972. After such a together opening it was a shame when the set veered off course to slightly more obscure and less engaging numbers and some first night rustiness began to creep in, but as the band and indeed audience were in such good spirits this mattered little. 'Robot', 'Psi Power' and 'Quark Strangeness & Charm' gave fans of the Calvert-era plenty to be happy about whilst earlier material was visitied, 'Master Of The Universe' in particular getting everyone going.

Adrian Shaw was sharing bass duties with Alan Davey tonight so that I was fortunate enough to have a quick word with himm, what a pleasant and genuine guy (special mention to Mr Davey for his band Gunslinger and debut album ‘Earthquake in E Minor’, a quite superb piece of work and highly recommended, the album Motorhead wish they had made!).

Steve Swindell’s much loved classic ‘Shot Down in the Night’ also made an appearance, giving Jerry Richards the spotlight for some fantastic liquid guitar runs. The band would no doubt have played on, but due to the venue’s 11pm curfew the Hawkship was forced to end it’s flight thru space for the evening, Jerry Richards neatly summing up by saying “25 years in 5 minutes” and it ended with a definite version of ‘25 years’.

All in all this was a great gig, a few minor stumbles here and there but on the whole a very rewarding experience and it begs the question: will Hawlords outlive it’s maker? On this evidence you’d better believe it!
Kscope is dedicated to artists in the post progressive genre, so this evening promised to be very interesting indeed.
‘Nosound’ from Italy kicked off the evening with ‘Fading Silently’ and it seemed a bit of a nervous start. After overcoming a slight technical hitch, the duo played a beautifully laid back ambient set which really suited the surroundings; a good start to the evening.
Next up were ‘Engineers’ comprising of Simon Phipps and Mark Peters playing acoustic guitars. They started the set with ‘Forgiveness’ which came over as a very laid back folky tune and the duo reminded me of a very young Simon and Garfunkel. The closing number for this very short set was ‘Home’ which was the first song they’d written in their bedroom and was released as a single back in 2004.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 326px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DcOi-4JMRus/TowEYjRBPKI/AAAAAAAABBw/Pywl8Oapq48/s400/Anathema.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659903651527867554" />

After the break it was ‘Bruce Soord’ who represented a very stripped down ‘Pineapple Thief ’, the first band to be signed to Kscope. The band have been around since 1999 and have released eight albums so far. Bruce played the first song that the band ever recorded ‘One More Step Away’ and was joined onstage by a young lady for backing vocals. This was another short but very passionate set delivered by Bruce finishing off with ‘I Will Light Up Your Eyes’.
‘Anathema’ the headliners were next. Hailing from Liverpool, Anathema was formed back in 1990 as a Doom/Death Metal band and tonight they were represented on stage by Danny and Vincent Cavanagh and Lee Douglas. They’ve come a long way since the doom metal days to working with an orchestra on the last two albums. Tonight’s acoustic set was kicked off with ‘Kingdom’ which is one of the old songs reworked on the latest album ’Falling Deeper’, which was recorded with full orchestra. Danny was the one man band looping the back beats using the acoustic guitar and playing the upright piano as well as acoustic guitar. Last years album of the year ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ is represented by ‘Thin Air’ and ‘Dreaming Light’ and both sound dreamingly beautiful. Lee Douglas takes on the lead vocal for ‘A Natural Disaster’ which is such a powerful moving piece, her voice was made for this song. The congregation gathered here tonight were simply loving the next song ‘Flying’ and were up on their feet singing along. They finished off the short set with ‘Fragile Dreams’ from the 1998 Alternative 4 album. It was over far too quickly, no encore but the crowd went home more than satisfied. Anathema have been around for 20 years and are still very much on the way up; creative, imaginative, powerful, dark, confident and beautiful; I just love them.
This was a fantastic evening showcasing a few of the acts on the Kscope label…it would be nice to see a follow up electric evening.
Arthur Hughes

Headstock Festival

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 192px; height: 128px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4vcFxfzG5kQ/TnmL2UXmuEI/AAAAAAAAA_I/2LjVpIzjTNQ/s400/Headstock.GIF" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654704572437280834" />
This was the second annual Headstock festival to be staged, held on the sprawling landscape of a former coal mining community on the outskirts of Mansfield and generously given a big bunch of government and lottery funded cash in an effort to regenerate the local area; both for the current residents and also the surrounding countryside. The festival aims to generate even further monies for this most worthy of causes and if we can have a big weekend party all the better! With support from the BBC in the form of a recently aired TV documentary and a concerted publicity push, they got a great crowd over the weekend and despite its relative size and with its heart in the right place the occasion gave music fans a great opportunity to wallow in some old school nostalgia and to check out a large gene pool of emerging new talent.

We arrived Friday evening and the site was a frenzy of hammers, saws, nails and spray paint, The weather was Crowded House territory; in other words 'four seasons in one day' Over the following two days it went from biblical downpours to 73 degrees in the shade; 'changable' as it's laughingly known. Come dinnertime on Saturday the site was turned into a funky little explosion of colour and noise. Amongst the musical highlights were local band 25 Past The Kkank who got everybody in a state of heightened danceyness; I just loved the frontman’s catchphrase 'sweating taters'. Playing as their name suggests, high energy ska with a heavy side order of rap and rock, they won everybody over, especially when they were joined by a gang of gaudily undressed can-can girls. One of the more bizarre sights was a speed dating stall with the splendidly attired Doris and Iris. Despite our pleas we were disqualified on grounds of age; I feel a court case coming on.

We met the hilarious 'Charlotte' on a nick nack stall, whose gripes and moans had us in stitches. At one point a customer asked 'have you an old bag?', Charlotte pointed to me and said 'yeah he's there'; bitch!. We took in the folk rockness of The Tree Top Flyers, very nice melodic west coastesque vibe, followed by a set from the incredibly boisterous Rage Against The Machinisms of Danananaykroyd. They were presumably sponsored by Red Bull; so much energy it was frightening (and all power to them for playing through a monsoon based weather event).

Over in the Muzika marquee things took on a decidedly piratical bent with the appearance of bunch of loonies called Seas Of Mirth. Every tune was a pirate based knees up, they even presided over an audience tug of war competition at the front of the stage; what's not to like? We witnessed some amazing musicianship over on the BBC introducing stage with the acoustic jazz folk of Maniere Des Bohemiens. It was at this point that I was assailed by the pub 'landlady' with her feather duster; she gave me a right old seeing to! It was then time for beer and a chick pea curry with potatoes followed by a game of Connect Four. We then took in a set from veteran On U Sound veterans African Headcharge; mucho cool dub vibes permeated the site, we felt the love (which made a change from rain running down your neck).

Headliners Echo & The Bunnymen turned in a short fiery set as the full moon hovered above the stage, Bathed in purple backlight they played a fabulous ‘greatest hits package’. 'The Cutter', an epic 'Over The Wall', 'Silver', 'Rescue'; absolutely brilliant, and Mac still has the charisma and that voice... and to be able to see them this close was an added bonus; knockout.

Dancing, more beer, some rain, a night under some very cold stars, then it's time for Sundays cavalcade of ‘blink and you'll miss ‘em’ acts. My notes read ‘Breadchasers, great; Ferocious Dog, great; The Lighning Seeds, even greater’. We missed CW Stoneking due to falling asleep in the kid zone; and STILL didn’t get a date.

Right, can we do this all again next year please? It's on my doorstep, no map reading skills involved and the beer is cheap; oh and can we have Dreadzone next time?

John Haylock

Live : Wilko Johnson and very special guest Ian Siegal

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 98px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IexszAAMRGU/TnG763NXIFI/AAAAAAAAA_A/YPYFzsTElro/s400/wilko.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5652505627253481554" />
ABS AGENCY & www.thegigcartel.com presents
WILKO JOHNSON + Very special guest Ian Siegal

Wilko Johnson, the phenomenal guitarist and founding member of Dr. Feelgood, who has influenced everyone from Joe Strummer and Mick Jones to Steve Albini, will embark on a nationwide UK tour throughout September and October 2011. Very special guest on all UK dates will be the award-winning blues singer Ian Siegal and his band.

The tour kicks off at the Edinburgh Caves on Thursday 15th September. Tickets go on sale on Friday 15th April at 9am and can be ordered by calling the 24 Hour Box Office on: 0871 230 1101 or book online at: www.seetickets.com.

In addition to pioneering Dr. Feelgood’s distinctive mid-seventies, pre-punk British R&B sound, in 1980 Johnson went on to play guitar for Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Today, Johnson’s solo band features Blockheads’ Norman Watt-Roy (bass guitar), and Dylan Howe (drums).

In 2009 Johnson featured in Julien Temple's "Oil City Confidential"; a fascinating feature length documentary about Dr. Feelgood. The film received many accolades including the MOJO Vision Award at the MOJO Honours List 2010.

Dr. Feelgood originally formed in 1971 as a British pub rock band who hailed from Canvey Island, Essex. Their name derived from a slang term for heroin or for a doctor who was willing to overprescribe drugs. It is also a reference to a 1962 record by the American blues pianist and singer Willie Perryman (also known as "Piano Red") called "Dr Feel-Good", which Perryman originally recorded under the name of Dr Feelgood & The Interns.

Dr. Feelgood’s distinctive British R&B sound was centered on Wilko Johnson’s choppy guitar style. The original band line-up also included singer Lee Brilleaux, and the rhythm section of John B. Sparks (aka "Sparko") on bass guitar and John Martin (aka "The Big Figure") on drums.

Dr. Feelgood was known primarily for their high energy live performances, although studio albums like Down by the Jetty (1974) and Malpractice (1975) were also incredibly popular. Their 1976 breakthrough live album, Stupidity reached No.1 in the Official UK Album Chart. When the band released their fourth album, Sneakin’ Suspicion (1977), Johnson left the group to pursue a solo career.

Edinburgh The Caves
Thursday 15th Courteeners eagerly anticipated third studio album, the band have announced two very special hometown shows at Manchester’s O2 Apollo on 8th and 9th December.

Summer 2011 has seen The Courteeners stake their claim as Britain’s biggest cult band. Headline shows at Wigan’s Haigh Hall and Cheshire’s Delamere Forest saw the band shift over 15,000 tickets, with the latter selling out in a Forestry Commission record of just 38 minutes.

Festival performances at Isle of Wight and V have seen the band play to huge crowds, so Liam Fray, Michael Campbell, Daniel Conan Moores and Mark Cuppello have decided it’s time to get intimate again and deliver a festive blow-out at Manchester’s O2 Apollo.

The Courteeners – Manchester O2 Apollo

Thursday 8th and Friday 9th December 2011

Tickets go on sale on Friday 9th September at 9am priced £22.50 (subject to booking fee) and are available via www.gigsandtours.com / www.ticketmaster.co.uk or 24 hour CC hotline 0844 811 0051 / 0844 826 2826

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS ANNOUNCE UK TOUR

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 357px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lGahE8U2vFk/Tm8XcLWrOLI/AAAAAAAAA-4/otWsswaKrPc/s400/smashing%2Bpumpkins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651761830224935090" />
The Smashing Pumpkins--Singer/Guitarist Billy Corgan, Guitarist Jeff Schroeder, Drummer Mike Byrne And Bassist Nicole Fiorentino--will return to the UK this November for a seven date tour including two nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.

The Smashing Pumpkins have created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history and sold over 30 million albums. They are now hard at work putting the finishing touches on Oceania, which will mark their first full album since 2007’s Zeitgeist. Oceania is “an album within an album,” part of their in-progress 44-song work Teargarden By Kaleidyscope. Featuring 13 new songs, Oceania will be released in early 2012.

Formed in Chicago in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins released Gish, their influential (and platinum) debut in 1991, which was followed by more platinum and multi-platinum albums including the nine-time platinum Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and the four-time platinum Siamese Dream as well as the platinum certified 1998 album Adore. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.

The Pumpkins returned in 2007 with their gold-certified and acclaimed sixth album Zeitgeist, which entered the charts at Number 2 in the U.S. and in the Top Ten internationally. Since their triumphant return to the stage in 2007, the Pumpkins have headlined some of the biggest events around the globe including the Reading Festival, Rock Am Ring, and V festival.

In 2008, the band was inducted into Hollywood’s RockWalk. Their first post-major label release was the song “Superchrist,” issued via the Guitar Center CD Fresh Cuts Vol. 2. They subsequently recorded the song--the modern rock hit--“G.L.O.W.” for the Guitar Hero® World Tour game, marking the first time a band has recorded a new song exclusively for the franchise. In November 2008, the band released their first live DVD, If All Goes Wrong. In December 2009 The group’s BILLY CORGAN has said the band’s new music “harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins; atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.”

This year, EMI Music will honour the legacy of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS with an extensive campaign that will see the iconic band’s albums from 1991-2000 reissued in fully remastered deluxe versions, each with bonus material.

The Smashing Pumpkins will be touring the UK this November:

Friday 11 November Manchester O2 Apollo 0844 477 7677

Sunday 13 November Glasgow O2 Academy 0844 499 9990

Monday 14 November Newcastle O2 Academy 0844 477 2000

Tuesday 15 November London O2 Academy Brixton 0844 477 2000

Wednesday 16 November London O2 Academy Brixton 0844 477 2000

Friday 18 November Sheffield O2 Academy 0844 477 2000

Saturday 19 November Birmingham O2 Academy 0844 477 2000

Tickets are onsale Friday 9th September at 10am – www.gigsandtours.com / 0844 811 0051

www.smashingpumpkins.com
http://www.facebook.com/smashingpumpkins
http://twitter.com/#!/billy
http://www.myspace.com/smashingpumpkins

Kaiser Chiefs second Manchester show added to 2012 tour

After playing two huge outdoor shows at Leeds Kirkstall Abbey at the weekend, Kaiser Chiefs have now added a second Manchester show due to popular demand to their 2012 UK Tour, their first in almost two years.

The tour follows the band’s re-emergence this year with new album ‘The Future Is Medieval’, a host of UK festival appearances including a euphoric return to Glastonbury, V Festival and some superlative shows on the European festival circuit.

Glastonbury / UK

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd1kj7BiIxc&feature=related

Hurricane / Germany

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbPw5QO1gsc&feature=related

In the meantime, the band released new single ‘Man On Mars’ on Taken from ‘The Future Is Medieval’ the accompanying video can be viewed here: http://www.vevo.com/watch/kaiser-chiefs/man-on-mars/GBUV71101199

Tickets for the new show go on sale 9am Tuesday 13th September

Saturday 18th February Manchester Academy 0161 832 1111 EXTRA DATE
His latest single ‘Stay Awake’ also topped the charts.

Example’s new album ‘Playing in the Shadows’ is a 12-track album of relentless monster tunes, all with killer pop choruses and huge dirty rave beats mixed with raw and candid lyrics. Once again Example has worked with the crème de la crème of the industry’s dance producers teaming up again with Chase and Status on the title track, Faithless who he toured with last year for ‘The Way’ and Nero on new single ‘Stay Awake’. Further production also comes courtesy of Funkagenda, Skream, Laidback Luke and Brookes Brothers to name a few.

Earlier this year he featured on the Wretch 32 No.2 smash ‘Unorthodox’ and Giggs’s ‘Look Over Your Shoulder’. He also bagged one of the biggest hype tracks of 2011 with the demon Skream collaboration ‘Shot Yourself in the Foot Again’ which received over 3.5 million YouTube views, climbed to #1 on HypeMachine and became a viral hit across the world.

The juggernaut that is Example LIVE wowed crowds at festivals all over country this summer including Glastonbury, Wireless, Lovebox, Big Chill, V2011, Creamfields and an iTunes headline to name a few. He also returned to the Balearic isle to headline Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks. Not content with a sold out 17-date headline UK tour running throughout November and December his new arena tour takes him to some of the UK’s biggest venues including London’s The O2 and Manchester’s MEN next year.

Tue 24 Apr 2012
Aberdeen
AECC
0844 499 9990

Thu 26 Apr 2012
Nottingham
Capital Arena
0844 4124 624

Fri 27 Apr 2012
London
The O2 Arena
0844 856 0202

Sat 28 Apr 2012
Manchester
MEN Arena
0844 847 8000

Mon 30 Apr 2012
Bournemouth
BIC
0844 576 3000

Tickets are on sale Friday 16th September @ 9am –

WWW.GIGSANDTOURS.COM & WWW.TICKETMASTER.CO.UK

24HR CC HOTLINE 0844 811 0051 & 0844 826 2826

New album ‘Playing In The Shadows” is out now

http://www.trythisforexample.com /

http://twitter.com/example

http://www.facebook.com/leadingbyexample

John Grant / Tom The Lion : Nottingham Glee Club – 8th September 2011

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 100px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NjqLnJuRkUw/Tm8EuQ7M4KI/AAAAAAAAA-w/ky3pKDD1R6k/s400/John%2BGrant.GIF" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651741250237030562" />
It must be a good six months since I last saw the one and only John Grant. On that occasion he was supporting Midlake and causing not a little buzz of knowing excitement. A lot of things have happened in Grantworld since then; the venues have gotten bigger (Royal Festival Hall, no less), the debut album Queen of Denmark is selling really well and he won the Mojo award for best live act. So thankfully there was a great big crowd waiting for him in Nottingham, a capacity crowd as well by the looks of things. Very heartening and reassuring that a singer songwriter of great quality is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

I've waxed lyrical before about the venue, it's got character and is beautifully designed and perhaps most importantly the acoustics are faultless (although minus 5 points for the crisps at one pound a bag). Tonight we have chairs and are at the front in the middle; perfect. Support tonight comes from Tom The Lion (see how I resisted to make any lion jokes?....what restraint). He's a tall, skinny guy with long hair, every bit the troubadour. Armed with an electric guitar and a couple of FX boxes, and switching to grand piano for a couple of numbers, this slightly nervous endearing young man played a handful of tunes from his new album 'The Adventures Of Tom The Lion' which is out now on Rough Trade Records. He has a distinctive voice and I like the way he generated his rhythms using looped guitar patterns then singing over them, much like the criminally overlooked Joseph Arthur used to do. Anyway I liked '1000 Years', 'Back To The Start' and the final emotionally wrought 'Rag Doll'. I think we all ought to keep an eye on Tom, he has the makings of something special.

Without announcements, preamble or fuss, Grant takes to the stage amid much whooping and promptly leads the crowd down some very dark alleys of the mind. There is fear and loathing inside Johns head tonight and he's wrapped them all up in some sugar candy coatings of pretty, pretty melodies; all the better to slay you with the killer punch lines. Opening with 'You Don't Have To' from the impending new album and moving through 'Sigourney Weaver', an incrediblely moving 'Where Dreams Go To Die' via 'Outer Space' and the sweary 'Chicken Bones'; even dropping in another new number 'Vietnam', which I suspect will soon become established as another classic. All the while he gives us candid banter between songs detailing the circumstances and origins of the songs; his childhood, his realization that he was gay, his fucked up relationships, all brutally honest and self effacing which only makes him more endearing. For tonight he's accompanied by a very quiet guy in cap who helped him out on piano and keyboard. He bought a nice, almost jazz feel to some of the songs and for the life of me I can’t remember his name; sorry.

'Fireflies', 'Caramel' a lovely It's Easier' and the old Czars’ number 'Drug' are all brought out for your attention and delight but it's that title track that always slays me, it's one of my favourite songs ever and never fails to knock me sideways. It's brilliant as always, but I'm moved to say that it was bettered by the final number 'Little Pink House' which he explained was prompted by memories of his grans house which used to be situated opposite his own family dwelling. An innocent enough scenario you might think but he infuses the song with such emotion that it dripped soul. A more wonderful, charming and talented guy you will never meet. John is a god, Grant him your love.

John Haylock

OMD : Eric’s Liverpool 10 September 2011

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 116px; height: 92px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Skar2RanK98/Tm8D-ZdptxI/AAAAAAAAA-o/TnD9isAgvgw/s400/OMD.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651740427895289618" />
Eric’s, the Matthew Street basement venue of Liverpool legend re-opened its doors on Saturday night (10th September). The significance of the club, which hosted some of the most important and influential acts of the time cannot be over-stated. Between 1976 and 1980 Eric’s saw the likes of the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Blondie and Joy Division grace its famously low-roofed stage. Playing a profound role in nurturing the local music scene, the venue is credited with launching the careers of local bands Echo and the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes and OMD, amongst others.

The announcement of a re-launch under new ownership aroused a goodly amount of comment amongst those whose lives were shaped by their experience of Eric’s. Some expressed horror at the perceived misappropriation of the club’s iconic name and reputation. Others simply shrugged at what they saw as a misguided attempt to re-create the spirit of the time.

It’s fair to say that a decent portion of the ‘invite only’ crowd was of an age to have attended in the late 70s. However, one glance at the, usually to be avoided, hen and stag shenanigans of the Cavern quarter, underlined for me the impossibility of re-creating the spirit of those heady punk/post punk times. Before I even descended the stairs, I was beginning to wonder what the club’s target audience would, or realistically could be in the future, given its particular location.

The privilege of opening went to Kids On Bridges, a local band, warmly received by the swelling crowd. OMD then took to the stage, their bemusement evident but handled with good grace. ‘It’s authentically hot and sweaty’, quipped Andy McCluskey. Indeed it was hellishly warm, although this didn’t seem to bother the mob of devotees pressing against the front of stage barriers. Commencing with ‘Electricity’, they then proceeded to belt out a string of well-known songs, based mainly on the first three albums. ‘Messages’,’ Souvenir’ and ‘Maid of Orleans’ were all impeccably delivered and interleaved with a prosaic, self-deprecating banter. The final track, ‘Enola Gay’ drew a rapturous response and, pressed into an unplanned encore, they finally obliged with..well..’Electricity’ again. Fantastic.

So I had finally got to go to Eric’s.and to see OMD, and I was not disappointed. As for the future of Eric’s, yes, it has its detractors, but ultimately I feel it should be judged on the strength of its future programme. Early signs are promising, and surely Liverpool can only benefit from another serious live music venue in an area of town sadly lacking in musical diversity.

Estelle Rowe

Wooden Shjips : Kazimier, Liverpool September 2011

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 80px; height: 80px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AuY3EoGxElg/Tm8C4eLEXvI/AAAAAAAAA-g/4A2Pe0GMvGc/s400/woodenshjips1.GIF" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651739226568679154" />
How have I never been to the Kazimier before? I don’t quite understand it myself, but it happened, as things are wont to do in this topsy-turvy world. Well, in any case, I can’t think of a better way to pop my venue cherry than with an awe-inspiring line-up of sonic wizardry and space rock.

The majority of the audience were predominantly male. Not sure why, but I was there, representing my, um ‘fellow’ sisters, and there were other women attending, so it wasn’t a complete testosterone frenzy. There was also an abundance of excellent t-shirts. A quick scan of the audience revealed prints from Sleep, Throbbing Gristle, The Flying Burrito Bros and Khanate. And the bass player in the Fresh and Onlys was wearing a Kurt Vile t. In any case, the arrival of the first support act interrupted my musings about the band wear and strange divisions at certain types of gigs. It was time to turn on, tune in and drop out to the spacy styling of Mugstar. The Scouse psychonauts took to the stage to deliver a blistering set of instrumental extended, psychy fuzzy intergalactic jams, which the crowd absolutely loved. And jeez, are they talented – like Hawkwind’s bastard children if they had copulated with My Bloody Valentine. Strong.

Screen projections of abstract black and white patterns looped endlessly on the wall behind the band, Gong-style bleeps and bloops melded with tribalesque loops and distortion, building and building into a crescendo of trancy noise. Well timed primordial shouts from the keyboard player added an extra sexy dimension to the sound. The bar was set pretty high for the rest of the evening, as the audience were strapped securely into a sonic capsule and prepared for take-off. The only downside was the mildly ineffectual light show – more kiddies disco than UFO club. This probably would have made for a more visceral experience had the lighting operatives put in a little more effort.
The Fresh and Onlys were up next. Another perfect support for Wooden Shjips - these workaholic noiseniks successfully straddle the full-on instrumental aspects of Mugstar and the Doorsy desert jams produced by the Shjips. The band has managed to incorporate disparate elements of psychedelia, garage and stoner rock as well as a gothic tinge to their sound. Hailing from San Francisco, their brand of psychedelic garage rock sounded as though they’d travelled to Liverpool via a time machine. Special mention must go to the drummer who was incredible. It’s always a good sign when you notice your jeans vibrating to the thud of the bass drum.

Erik ‘Ripley’ Johnson has some striking facial hair, and watching him amble onto the stage, I was put in mind of Alan Moore - they both have a commanding presence and a somewhat mysterious persona. Ripley’s muttering and monotonous delivery of the band’s lyrics is part and parcel of why Wooden Shjips are such an interesting band. He kind of sounds like he’s channelling Jim Morrison from 50,000 leagues under the sea. And when this is combined with the tinfoil covered organ/keyboard sounds, it makes for a particularly Doorsy vibe, only slowed down to a crawl and melded with Suicide to create music for a peyote tinged desert road trip. Unfortunately, at times, it was difficult to hear the vocals, and I felt the sound suffered from being slightly muddy, but it wasn’t a problem for the audience who were all blissed out and loving the set – from the atmospheric voice-overs kicking off each song to the massive coherent swampy jams they all ended up becoming. My personal highlight was getting to hear ‘We Ask You to Ride’ live and as intended. Yes, the phrase ‘wall of sound’ is somewhat hackneyed and has been used to refer to every type of artist under the sun, but clichés are such for a reason and when it comes to Wooden Shjips, it’s an apt description The vibe at this gig was amazing, and it really was like being one blissed out and blown away electron vibrating in a ‘70s psychedelic rock atom. In Liverpool. In 2011.

One thing will become clear upon reading this review – I love the Kazimier and fully intend to return again as soon as there’s a decent band playing. Oh, and (in the immortal and timeless words of Columbo) just one more thing - Wooden Shjips are the dog’s bollocks!

Lisa Pike

ex LIPA Mamas Gun and Marcus Bonfanti Eric's Liverpool 13 Nov

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 117px; height: 117px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C0IAitzu8wA/TmnA5jC2W-I/AAAAAAAAA9Y/jzd5Dt3Nmbk/s400/mamas%2Bgun.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5650259302405266402" />
Mamas Gun
Marcus Bonfanti
Sunday 13th November
Eric's, Mathew Street, Liverpool
£8 www.ticketweb.co.uk

Named after Erykah Badu album Mamas Gun are a five-piece soul funk band based in London and released their debut album 'Routes To Riches' in 2009. They have promoted, toured and released material from this album in over 9 countries achieving considerable exposure and support. In late 2009 the band became an overnight success in Japan where they became the most played international artist in Japan.

The band was formed by Andy Platts, the lead singer/composer/producer in 2007 and was joined by bassist 'Professor' Rex Horan, keyboardist Dave 'Eighties' Burnell, Terry 'Spiller' Lewis and drummer 'Union' Jack Pollitt after scanning the internet for inspiring and talented musicians.

Andy Platts was born in a military hospital in Kowloon, Hong Kong, to a nomadic father who had landed in the Far East as a police recruit in their battles with underground triad organisations, Platts soaked up the musical ether that surrounded him (which included the Beatles, the Doors and ELO from his father, and a Filipino mother who played Spanish-influenced guitar), attending countless schools in the process before winning a place at Liverpool’s LIPA institute. Subsequently, Platts played on Corinne Bailey Rae’s hugely successful debut album and then, in 2006, landed his own publishing deal with Zomba Music. This led to collaborations with an extraordinary song-writing A-list that included Rod ‘Thriller’ Temperton, John Oates, Jed Leiber (son of hit-making legend Jerry) and former Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson

Support comes from fellow LIPA student Marcus Bonfanti. His second album – ‘What Good Am I To You’ - is full of the highs and lows we all know, referencing a cool range of influences from Tony Joe White, through Tom Waits to Led Zeppelin. But ultimately it’s his own style - this is the sound of the North London blues.

‘What Good Am I To You’ was listed in Classic Rock Magazine’s top 50 albums of 2010 and the single "Give Me Your Cash" was included in their top 40 songs of 2010. Bonfanti and his 3 piece band have been playing shows up and down the country to promote the album, his follow up to the acclaimed 2008 debut “Hard Times”.

Fast building a reputation as one of the most exciting acts on the UK live circuit with a fierce show, he’s earned 2 nominations in the 2011 British Blues Awards (Best Male Vocals & Best Guitarist) to go with his 2 nominations last year (Best Album & Best Male Vocals). Following a triumphant return to Glastonbury this year, a full UK tour is scheduled for the Autumn, to coincide with a new album.

The 29-year-old was born and raised in a tiny flat in North London to an English mother and a ‘dangerously Italian’ father. He picked up the guitar for the first time at the age of 16 after hearing Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” and has already packed in plenty, having worked as a sideman for artists such as PP Arnold, Joe Lewis Walker, Earl Thomas, and Findlay Brown. He’s also opened for Chuck Berry, Robert Cray, John Mayall, Paul Jones, JJ Grey, Philip Sayce, Sonny Landreth, Walter Trout, Ian Siegal, Beth Rowley, Martin Harley & Jeff Lang.

However, following acclaimed appearances at 2010’s South-by-South West, Glastonbury, Secret Garden, Hop Farm, Maryport, Downpatrick and Carlisle festivals, and something approaching 200 live shows in the past year, it’s as the main man that Bonfanti’s reputation as an extraordinary live performer is growing.

If ‘Hard Times,’ set the scene and sent some subtly effective messages about a new British voice demanding to be heard, ‘What Good Am I To You’ makes good on all those promises.

“Bonfanti deserves to become the next British Blues Guitar Hero” The Guardian

“With a voice like sand & glue, a punchy guitar technique & stockpile or careworn tales, his appeal becomes unisex. Last year I attended two fabulous gigs within the space of a couple of weeks – a stupendously sweat soaked Modest Mouse concert (at the Academy) and a crazed space rock freak out in Manchester with Daevid Allen and those lovely Chaps from Gong. Imagine my excitement then, when I learned that White Denim – an Austin Texas garage rock band who only happen to have released one of my favourite albums this year – were gracing Liverpool with their presence.

You’d better believe I wanted this to be good. It was therefore heartwarming to arrive at the venue to see that it was already pretty damn full at around 8.15 – I have attended far too many gigs where the poor support acts have performed to a handful of diehards who are determined to hit the bar, purchase 5 or 6 pints of overpriced lager and then stake their claim stage-front in order to nod and chinstroke their way through the entire performance. Or maybe that’s just because I’ve seen a fair few post rock bands live… I was also slightly worried that the Best Coast gig taking place the same evening might pinch some of the audience, although having said that, their sound is markedly different.
The audience were a decent seeming bunch – surprisingly eclectic, but then again, I had already noted previously that there was a lot of buzz about both WD and their support act, Royal Bangs. Much to my chagrin, I didn’t get an opportunity to check them out prior to the evening. In a way, I’m kind of glad, as I had no idea what to expect, and the fact that they totally rocked was a pleasant and delightful surprise. Think the Black Keys via Crystal Antlers, but that doesn’t really even come close. There were some serious Flaming Lips style meltdowns in a sparkling set that was over all too soon. Consulting my embryonic ‘gig notes’, there’s drunken scrawl speaking of facial hair, korgs and an intensely animated drummer keeping things ticking over nicely. These guys really need to be bigger than they are, and they certainly gained themselves one new fan in yours truly.

In keeping with the tone of what was shaping up to be a gig as close to perfect as any I have experienced of late, WD took to the stage several minutes early. Unbelievable – and clearly showing that these blokes are serious musicians as opposed to divas in it for the money. Without further ado, they launched into a cracking version of ‘It’s Him!’ Then things all got a bit Led Zeppelin with a sexy extended instrumental jam which was all very lovely and psychedelic – and one of the reasons I’m advocating their music to each and every person I meet whenever I get the chance.

WD are one of those wonderful bands where the live experience serves to enhance what’s been laid down on record and, dare I say, surpass it at times. I’m thinking in particular of the blissed out, laid back ‘Street Joy’ we were treated to in addition to ‘is and is and is’. The sound quality from my puritanical position somewhat further away from the front of the stage than I would usually venture was excellent. The band themselves were tight, and their sheer exuberance was infectious – they looked thoroughly delighted to be playing for the enthusiastic mass of fans. The songs merged together effortlessy, and other stand-out tracks included ‘Anvil Everything’, ‘Bess Street’ and in particular, ‘I Start to Run’, which was the first single from their second album, ‘Fits’ and came on all ‘60s garage swagger with filthy guitar licks and Stooges style vocal delivery. Vocalist and guitarist James Petralli has an remarkable talent for performing these songs, with their complicated structure and lyrical content, as effortlessly as if he was singing a set of nursery rhymes. All this and they played well over the 10.30 pm curfew.

So in closing, the lucky attendees of the O2 Academy gathered together to worship at the temple of Southern Fried proggy garage were treated to everything they would have wanted in a live performance from the band who have released one of the best summer albums of 2011. And Royal Bangs – check them out – you’ll not be disappointed. My gig-going companions and I certainly weren’t.

Lisa Pike

Off The Tracks Festival Review

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 301px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oS_u0zUGwFc/TmYHNcjeijI/AAAAAAAAA84/4j-bJ9WzWGU/s400/offthetracksummer.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5649210710167554610" />
Due to unforeseen circumstances we only managed to attend the Saturday, so we missed The Selecter and the much lauded Peatbog Faeries who played on the Friday and the bonkers Lancashire Hotpots and local folk heroes Seven Little Sisters on the Sunday; so this is just a brief sketch of Saturday’s events.

Held twice yearly for over a decade, Off The Tracks takes place in the sprawling grounds of a country hotel just off the M1 near East Midlands airport. This small but perfectly formed gathering of the tribes was most enjoyable, with an eclectic mix of folk, rock and fun, it struck just the right balance and there was a great atmosphere prevalent; helped in no small part by the presence of a well stocked and popular bar selling a multitude of strangely named ales. My only advice is to avoid the 'old scrotums', particularly if you don't want your bowels to malfunction the next day. So, we've got a courtyard, with a large marquee and surrounding that, various barns and outbuildings where there was constant jamming and impromptu performances. One of which I particularly enjoyed came from Chris Hall, (loud whoops and accordion), and Hazel Scott,( vocals , guitar, sexy French accent via Derby ), and three friends on guitar, mandolin and fiddle. They were playing in the corner of the bar and served up some lively Cajun music, a most welcome diversion; it reminded me of how great this genre of music is live. Hazels vocals were striking and Chris played a mean accordion!

We caught a set by Coda, playing some lovely jigs and reels and the hurdy gurdy was given a good workout! We unfortunately missed the permanently mad John Otway and the amazing Dave Swarbrick with Martin Carthy, they came on early and we didn't expect them to appear until quite late. Nevertheless we did catch Merry Hell, formed from the ashes of The Tansads, very much in the same mould as the Levellers, and as their name suggests they did raise merry hell! They proved to be very popular as did the next band on, an amazingly versatile reggae band from Manchester called Extra Love; an eight piece band who kicked up a right old storm. We had our own punky reggae party. They were followed by a band that is causing seismic tremors on the rock scene, Saint Jude. Imagine if you will, The Faces fronted by Janis Joplin. Her name is Lynne Jackaman and my god does she have a pair of lungs!! A real proper rock band, hairy guitarists, a short drum solo, a bassist who holds his bass like the late John Entwhistle, phew! rock n roll! They have a great bunch of original toons, really liked 'In My Head' 'Soul On Fire' and 'Southern Belles’; they were brilliant.

This was just a minor skirmish with Off The Tracks. Next year, if we can get our act together; we will be there for the full three days and hopefully so will some of you lot. And try some scrotums, if you dare!
http://www.annularmedia.net/Live.html#OffTheTracksFestival

Twin Atlantic UK Tour Announced

UK Tour Announced

Taken from their critically acclaimed debut album, “Free” - Twin Atlantic will release new single “Make A Beast Of Myself” on September 26th. Head over to the band’s official YouTube site to see the brilliant video which was shot in one take in Berlin with director James Slater earlier this summer http://www.youtube.com/user/twinatlantic

In other TA news, last week the band were featured on a BBC Radio 1 documentary called “The Next Big Thing” which also included We Are The Ocean & Lower Than Atlantis. As three of the most exciting bands in UK Rock, the bands talked in depth about why rock music is more relevant now that it has been in years.

2011 is shaping up to be the year of Twin Atlantic. Following a UK Top 40 and number 2 album in the rock chart, the quartet’s meteoric rise to the forefront of UK rock is an amazing story. The band rocked crowds all over the UK and Europe this summer, major radio and TV stations are adding the band to their playlists, huge press features are running and an enormous amount of love for the band on fan forums have shone a bright light on one of the best bands in the UK.

Their full-length debut album ‘Free’ is an inspiring collection of songs full of ambition, pain, belief and soul. In a world of music dominated by talent show winners, mass-marketed bands and meaningless music, here, finally, is a band in which to invest your heart.

Twin Atlantic are:

Sam McTrusty – Lead Vocals & Guitar

Ross McNae – Bass, Piano & Vocals

Barry McKenna – Guitar, Cello & Vocals
I'd like to tell you that this years Green Man festival was awful, full of rubbish bands, crap performers and overpriced beer. I’d like to tell you that the people were vile and unfriendly, but I can't do that because the Green Man festival (our fourth, if I remember correctly) is the most perfect three day music festival in the world; period. The bands are invariably top notch cutting edge or just downright bloody intriguing. The diversions are many and wonderful and the people (apart from the cow who took 10 minutes to serve me at the Green Man pub bar) are soooo friendly. Let's not forget the notoriously changeable (and wet) Welsh weather, which this year spared us a deluge and even caused mass outbreaks of sun tan lotion applying!. I love this place. Here are this years reasons why.

Arriving 'refreshed' after an unscheduled stop at a the Bridge End pub in the village next door, Crickhowell. We promptly caught Robyn Hitchcock and his band on the main stage doing his weirdo pop tuneage complete with added Captain Beefheart numbers 'Big Eyed Beans From Venus' and 'Electricity', dressed in his trademark black shirt with white spots or is it white shirt with black spots?; with matching guitar he cuts a fine figure. He’s a veritable soldier of psych, a bastion of barmy beatness. Yet this set was as nothing compared to the acoustic set he gave 30 minutes later in the Einstein Garden with a bunch of songs all themed around insects. He captivated an enthralled audience with bonkers banter and some wonderful tunes; yes, up close and personal with the Salvador Dali of surreal pop.

A leisurely stroll into the open air walled garden of the Green Man pub area and we are greeted with the wonky Welsh surf tones of the frankly unpronounceable Y Niwl, who are basically Gryff Rhys’s backing band. They were pretty groovy and I was almost tempted to get out my surf board.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 314px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c8Th6_c8K-g/Tl9eKC4iAbI/AAAAAAAAA7I/E4Y18Tf-WMU/s400/Noah%2B%2526%2Bthe%2BWhales2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647335984411574706" />

The Villagers put out one of the best albums of last year and to hear it live is a wondrous thing. This band make standing in a field with aching feet seem worthwhile; lovely tunes, great vocals and a version of the title track 'Becoming A Jackal' that will live with me for a long time (as I hope will Laura Marling, but that's another story). It was all I could do not to have a little wee of excitement. Jesus wept! ...it's only Friday teatime and I’m in heaven. I missed the much touted Ben Howard and the naughty Howard Marks but we got to the front for the muchly anticipated Explosions In The Sky. They were very good and kept building these huge cathedrals of sound, but time and again they didn't go for the big one. They seemed hesitant to push the songs over the top into squealing pig dog overload territory; it was all a bit of an anti climax, but bloody good anyway. (I think back to last years Flaming Lips appearance, there is no comparison).

Saturday was my favourite day. I spent most of the afternoon making friends and annoying people in the Green Man pub area (again), caught loads of great acts, Laura J Martin, Mancub Babywoman and ex Boo Radleys frontman Martin Carr. I met a wine producer who liked to dress up as a woman, a fairy from Australia, a Welsh woman who frightened me and some doctors in the kids field who were doing a piece on how scabs form. I got collared as a blood clot (make your own jokes up) and bloody good I was too. As the day progressed we seemed to draw on reserves of rock energy we never knew we had. Then came some downright weirdness courtesy of the tall, bearded Texan songwriter Josh T Pearson who we caught first in the literature tent being interviewed; this so intrigued us. We then went over to the Far Out tent to see his set which was amazing but then we caught him playing to a packed Rough Trade CD stall in front of 50 mesmerized people. To call this performance intense would be an understatement, he was stoned and as cool as fuck; I can honestly say it was almost a religious experience!

Ok, I saw three new best new bands. The first was Destroyer in the Far Out tent, despite the aggressive nature of their name they are not some heavy metal band from Wisconsin , but an intriguing mix of Steely Dan musicianship and Mercury Rev restless innovation, complete with a bit of a dancey edge; bloody great. Although the same cannot be said of the Fleet Foxes, perhaps the worlds most boring live band , yawn !.....I’ll pass on this as I was obviously in a minority, the huge crowd loved them. I went up to the Chai Wallah tent and discovered the amazing dj'ing skills of DJ Moneyshot. As we headed back to the tent I heard the familiar strains of Rage Against The Machine and saw some blue lasers arcing the sky. This apparent madness was happening in the Green Man pub garden. We entered through a tiny Alice In Wonderland type door in the wall only to be confronted by a thousand nutters dancing on tables and going bonkers to a DJ playing what appeared to be every indie hit of the nineties; this was fantastic! With some of the worst cases of dancing I saw all weekend (yes bongo boy i mean you!) eventually I crawled into the tent at 4 am and slept like a baby.....until 4.05 when I had to get up for another excitement wee.

Sunday and it was time to chill, chill, chill, Arthur, our answer to Jamie Oliver, made a mega breakfast for half the campsite. So armed with a stomach lining of grease, tea and sausages of unknown origin, we strolled in the beating sun checking out vinyl stalls, hat stalls, clothes stalls, nick nack stalls, then went to the Chai Wallah tent where we discovered a lovely singer and guitarist Brooke Sharkey. With a most angelic voice, she broke our hearts singing in French and English; this girl is going to go far. Over in the Literature Tent, the author of ‘Submarine’ (now on DVD, see it or die trying) Joe Dunthorne read extracts from his new novel and performed some very good interactive poetry; so talented, so young, so check him out. He was followed by the legendary stick insect that is John Cooper Clarke, with hilarious poems about sexually transmitted diseases, Bono and a sequel to Beasley Street, Beasley Boulevard, he slayed the crowd with his irrepressible Manc humour. Legend.

I loved the feed-backy goodness of the brothers Tweak Bird who rocked the Far Out Stage and Antlers who brought us gentle vibes with some slow majestic waves of sonic beauty. As the evening wore on, Laura Marling (put some nice clothes on!) the Low anthem and Iron and wine all helped bring the Festival to a close in a manner so chilled out it was more chilled out than having sex on an iceberg. See you 2012 Green Man, we love you.

Even though reality shows have been trying to prove otherwise, a successful career as a musician, indeed as a pop star, cannot be forced with a pre-packaged crash course. As of 2010, Paul Kalkbrenner has tallied up more than 15 years of experience as a producer and live act, all the while learning what it means to go purposefully from one step to the next.

The early 90s were formative years for a young Paul Kalkbrenner as well. Eventually, in one of many long and sleepless nights on the dance floors of E-Werk, Planet and Whale, the dream was born to make music himself, and anything less important would be put aside. A job as TV editor got him through the mid-90s and financed his first music gear.

By this point Paul had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people’s records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks were released in 1999 on Berlin-based Bpitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city’s east. A series of further singles and two full-lengths (Superimpose and Time) followed, plus continuous live performances that threatened to shatter the grid of his calendar.

Together with Paul Kalkbrenner, Bpitch Control gained a strong momentum. Interviews in respected German magazines like Spex and De:Bug paved the way for regular international bookings. The Lufthansa fetishist had now become a frequent flyer. Paul’s third album Self (2004) would mark the beginning of a new era. His melodic sound, with its affinity for grand emotional gestures, obeyed the logic of the dance floor, but Self introduced a narrative aesthetic, serving as a soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist (at least, not yet…). It was Paul's most musical and mature album to date, although still taking cues from the dance floor and rave culture, offering a first glimpse of what was yet to come. "Gebrünn Gebrünn”, released one year later, became a crossover hit found in everyone DJ’s record bag and finally cemented Paul’s status as a Techno MVP.

Paul has had sold out shows all over the world. And more recently his 2010 tour was documented and captured on film by Berlin finest visual and video artists “Die Pfadfinderei”. They recorded 15 shows on a high quality level with 5 – 8 different cameras. Directed by Max Penzel who was also involved at Berlin Calling film the DVD project “2010 – A live documentary”. It features 10 Tracks recorded and filmed at locations all over Europe. A second part of the DVD gives us insight into Paul Kalkbrenner’s history and his life on the road. After the official release on Paul Kalkbrenner Musik in December 2010 the DVD reached the “Gold” status in March 2011.

At the 3rd of June 2011 Paul Kalkbrenner releases his fifth 10 track studio album „ICKEWIEDER“ on his own label Paul Kalkbrenner Musik. In the following weeks Paul will be on stage at lots of Festivals all over the world. His long-lasting concert tour starts early September and Paul heads to the UK this November for a one off show at London’s Koko:
