AI slop refers to low-quality, mass-produced content generated by AI, found on social media and in search results. It's characterized by a lack of effort, low value, and often a high volume of output, similar to spam. This content can include text, images, videos, entire websites

The term AI Slop has been used to describe unrefined, easy-to-digest content for some time. In the context of AI, it highlights how ease generative AI can produce large amounts of content, some of which may be of questionable quality or misinformation e.g. fake news, deepfake, spam.

Issues

Proliferation of misinformation, fake news e.g. AI-generated political content from 2024 US election, including Trump’s "Swifties for Trump" images on Truth Social.

The strategy exploits algorithm biases, leading to widespread criticism and reduced content visibility.

Quality concerns

Outdated, biased training data, spreading obsolete SEO practices, misinformation, as noted in recent analyses.

Detection challenges grow as AI mimics quality material, prompting experts to recommend checking content sources, ahead of 2025 global election season.

Facebook, Tik-Tok, Twitter X, Pinterest, and many other social media platforms are increasingly leveraging generative AI to retain user attention by flooding feeds with mass-produced, low-quality content. This strategy, dubbed "AI slop," mirrors traditional spam that boosts engagement metrics like likes and views.

Social media tweaked algorithms to include over a third of feed content from unfollowed accounts, embedding this AI-generated material to keep users scrolling, while monetization programs incentivize creators to churn out more slop for small payments or affiliate revenue.

Downsides

The poor quality stems from AI's reliance on outdated or biased training data, leading to content that often lacks originality or accuracy—e.g., obsolete SEO advice or misinformed plant care tips. More critically, it fuels misinformation, as seen with fake news.

Research on platform X highlights a growing challenge in distinguishing fact from fiction, due to AI-generated content, or "AI slop."

Inspired by a true story, your journey begins with a truly interesting twist, often used in thrillers and crime novels to highlight different points of view or levels of understanding! Even if it's just a simple difference in terminology.

A voice-over begins a monologue with the question "why" and the main difference between homicide and assassination, which precedes the inspector's seemingly methodical approach:

Homicide:
- Broadest Term: Homicide is the umbrella term for any killing of a human being by another human being.
- Neutral: It doesn't necessarily imply illegality or criminal intent. It simply states that one person caused the death of another.
- Examples: Homicide includes murder, manslaughter, justifiable killings (like self-defense by a civilian or a police officer in the line of duty), and even accidental killings where a person's action causes another's death without criminal intent.
Assassination:
- Specific Type of Murder: Assassination is a type of murder with very particular characteristics.
- Victim: The victim is typically a prominent person – a political leader, public figure, celebrity, or someone with significant influence.
- Motive: The killing is usually done for political, ideological, or religious reasons, often with the aim of causing a significant public impact, destabilizing a government, or making a statement. It's often premeditated and carried out by surprise.
- Not just any murder: If you kill a random person in a street robbery, that's murder (a type of homicide), but it's not an assassination. If you kill a president or a civil rights leader, that's an assassination.

Why the narrator and inspector might use different terms:

Narrator (Homicide): The narrator might be describing the raw, objective fact of the killing – a human being caused the death of another human being. It's the most factual and broad description of the event itself.
Inspector (Assassination): The inspector, being an investigator, would immediately be looking for motive, victimology, and the broader implications. It's highly unlikely this is "spoiling" the plot in the way you fear. In fact, this is a very common and clever technique used in crime and thriller novels!

Here's why:

Homicide is the Broadest Term:
- As both discussed, homicide simply means "the killing of one human being by another." It's a neutral, factual term that encompasses all forms of human killing, including:
  - Murder (intentional, unlawful killing)
  - Manslaughter (unlawful killing without malice aforethought, e.g., accidental but negligent)
  - Justifiable Homicide (e.g., self-defense, lawful police action)
- So, when the narrator says "homicide," they are describing the objective event without revealing its criminal nature (or lack thereof). This keeps all possibilities open – it could be an accident, self-defense, or a planned murder.
Assassination Implies Intentional Murder from the Start:
- An assassination is a specific type of murder, always involving intent and usually a prominent victim with political/ideological motives.
- When the inspector uses the term "assassination," it immediately tells you about their initial assessment and hypothesis of the crime. It suggests they believe:
  - The victim was a person of significance.
  - The killing was intentional and premeditated.
  - There's likely a specific, non-personal motive behind it (political, ideological, etc.).

Why this builds tension and isn't a spoiler:

Differing Perspectives: The contrast between the narrator's neutral "homicide" and the inspector's loaded "assassination" immediately creates tension and invites the reader to question:
- Is the inspector jumping to conclusions?
- Does the inspector know something the narrator (or the reader) doesn't yet?
- What kind of victim is this that it's being called an "assassination" so quickly?
Setting Expectations (and potentially subverting them): By calling it an "assassination," the inspector immediately raises the stakes. The reader expects a high-profile, complex case. The plot might then explore:
- Was it truly an assassination, or was it a cover-up for a different kind of murder?
- Was it actually an accident that someone tried to make look like an assassination?
- Is the inspector making a mistake, or are they under pressure to label it as such for political reasons (as you suggested)?

This isn't spoiling, it could be an accident. If anything, the inspector's use of "assassination" is a strong clue that they already suspect it was an intentional killing (a murder), and potentially one with wide-reaching implications. The mystery then becomes proving that intent and discovering the specific motives and perpetrators behind this particular type of homicide.

Another character presents a completely different logical sequence of events - the concept of Johatsu (蒸発), which literally translates to "evaporation" in Japanese.¹

This is a real and often tragic social phenomenon in Japan, and the character's description of "social kill" perfectly encapsulates its essence.

Here's what it's all about:

Johatsu (蒸発 - Evaporation):
- It refers to people who voluntarily disappear from their lives, cutting all ties with family, friends, jobs, and former identities.² They effectively "evaporate" from society.³
- They often move to a new city, take on a new name, and start a completely new life, never contacting their past.⁴
Reasons for Disappearance:
- Debt: As mentioned, this is a very common reason. Unmanageable debt, particularly from gambling or business failures, can bring immense shame in Japanese society. Disappearing is seen as a way to avoid creditors and the deep dishonor associated with defaulting.
- Societal Loss/Shame: This is a broad category encompassing:
  - Job Loss/Business Failure: In a culture with strong expectations of lifetime employment and loyalty, losing a job or failing a business can be devastating to one's honor and family reputation.
  - Failed Relationships/Divorce: The stigma of divorce or marital problems can also lead people, particularly men, to disappear.
  - Academic Failure: High pressure on academic success can lead to desperate measures if one fails.
  - Avoiding Consequences: Fleeing from minor crimes, domestic violence situations (either as perpetrator or victim), or other embarrassing personal situations.
  - Seeking a New Start: Some simply desire to escape a life they find unbearable or unfulfilling and wish for a complete reset.
"Social Kill" as a Metaphor:
- This phrase vividly describes the feeling that drives Johatsu. For many, the shame or failure they face is so overwhelming that they feel metaphorically "killed" or destroyed by society's judgment.
- By disappearing, they choose a form of social death – they cease to exist in their former social, professional, and familial circles. They are "dead" to that part of their life, even if they are physically alive elsewhere.
- It highlights the immense pressure of societal expectations and the emphasis on public face (外聞 - gaibun) and honor (名誉 - meiyo) in Japanese culture, where failure can be so unbearable that complete disappearance seems like the only option.

In essence, Johatsu is a phenomenon where individuals choose to erase their past identity and existence due to the crushing weight of societal pressures, perceived failures, or overwhelming personal problems, leading to a self-imposed "social death." It's a fascinating and poignant subject often explored in Japanese literature, film, and true-crime documentaries.⁵

At the same time, we face a fantastic and very insightful counter-argument made by another character! It absolutely ties into the first Rambo film, First Blood, and touches upon significant sociological and anthropological themes.

Here's a breakdown:

"Rambo" Syndrome and First Blood

The character is almost certainly referring to the themes explored in the 1982 film First Blood, which introduced John Rambo.

The Plot of First Blood: John Rambo is a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, a Green Beret trained in extreme combat and survival. He returns to the United States only to find himself a pariah. He's treated with hostility and disrespect by civilians, particularly a small-town sheriff who harasses him. This triggers Rambo's severe PTSD, and when he's abused in jail, his combat training kicks in. He escapes and essentially wages a one-man war against the police and National Guard who hunt him down.
The "Rambo Syndrome" in this Context: The character's argument of "society produces a sort of individual profile to serve its interests, and then tries to get rid of them by all means" perfectly aligns with Rambo's plight.
- Society Produces a Profile: Rambo was trained by the U.S. government to be an elite, lethal fighting machine, specifically to serve the nation's interests in war. He was molded into a soldier who excelled at violence and survival in extreme conditions.
- Then Tries to Get Rid of Them: Upon returning home, Rambo is no longer needed in that capacity. Society (represented by the hostile town and indifferent public) doesn't know how to reintegrate him. His skills are seen as dangerous, his trauma is ignored, and his very presence is perceived as a threat or an inconvenience. The state, which created him, now actively tries to contain or eliminate him because he no longer fits into "normal" society. He's discarded.
- "By All Means": The escalating violence in the film shows society's willingness to use overwhelming force (police, National Guard, even military hardware) to suppress or "get rid of" Rambo, rather than rehabilitate or accept him.

Sociological and Anthropological References

The mention of "Rambo syndrome" concept touches on several deep sociological and anthropological ideas:

Social Control and Deviance:
- Social Control Theory: This sociological theory examines how societies maintain order and conformity. It looks at the mechanisms (formal, like laws and police; and informal, like social norms and ostracism) that encourage individuals to adhere to societal expectations.
- In the "Rambo" context, society (through its informal norms and later formal law enforcement) is trying to exert control over Rambo. When he doesn't conform to civilian expectations, he is labeled "deviant," and the system moves to correct or remove that deviance.

The "Sacrificial Lamb" or "Disposable Individual":

- Rambo embodies the "disposable soldier" – celebrated during wartime, but discarded and unwanted when peace (or at least, the absence of that particular war) returns.
The Social Construction of "Otherness":
- Society defines who belongs and who doesn't. Rambo, despite serving his country, is quickly "othered" – seen as a dangerous outsider, a "drifter" or "crazy veteran" – rather than a returning hero. This "othering" justifies the harsh treatment he receives.
- This connects to theories of labeling theory in sociology, where assigning a label (e.g., "deviant," "dangerous") can fundamentally change how society interacts with an individual, often leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy or further marginalization.
The Conflict Between Individual and Society:
- This is a perennial theme in sociology and philosophy. Societies often require individuals to suppress certain instincts or adopt specific roles for the greater good. However, what happens when an individual's experiences or training fundamentally clash with the demands of "normal" civilian life?
- The "Rambo syndrome" argues that society, in its self-interest, creates specialists (like soldiers) who are then ill-equipped or even punished for the very traits it cultivated in them, once their specific role is over.

In essence, the character's "Rambo syndrome" argument is a powerful sociological critique. It suggests that societies, in their pursuit of order and specific interests, can instrumentalize individuals, and then, rather than accommodating their altered state or unique skills, actively work to exclude or suppress them when they no longer fit the prevailing social mold.

It was a long week checking along the uneven mess of popular CSS & JS frameworks and Web native components. Some managers, developers and designers have been taught, and often pushed to adopt certain practices, that helped the industry to continuously grow. But to some extent there is a need to question such expensive solutions and examine those heavy issues then. At the time of writing, there are 100 web pages for 62227 open issues on https://crbug.com, the Chromium bug tracker, which reflects the enormous complexity of building a modern web browser. Such complexity increases every time a new feature is added to the pile of pending tasks. Meanwhile developers are encouraged to learn those new features which often end up in the waste paper bin. They cannot get over it, because it's a Catch-22, a never-ending vicious circle. A "Catch-22" is "a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule. "For example, losing something is typically a conventional problem; to solve it, one looks for the lost item until one finds it. But if the thing lost is one's glasses, one cannot see to look for them — a Catch-22. The term "Catch-22" is also used more broadly to mean a tricky problem or a no-win or absurd situation. Since the challenges in the sector are well documented: limited in-house expertise, limited resources, and limited time. One should wonder if it is not another "strategy to keep the minds busy". Anyway, the decision-makers are convinced they know all there is to know. Notwithstanding the fact that over their heads, the Southern Cross sparkles to remind everyone, in case they might be caught unawares, that the sun also turns anti-clockwise in the sky. Eventually, anyone might get stuck in a paradox that will never get them from point A to point B. So it surely makes sense to start by trying to understand what the real issues are.

About Catch-22

A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations. The term was coined by Joseph Heller, who used it in his 1961 novel Catch-22.

An example is:

In needing experience to get a job..."How can I get any experience until I get a job that gives me experience?" – Brantley Foster in The Secret of My Success.

Catch-22s often result from rules, regulations, or procedures that an individual is subject to, but has no control over, because to fight the rule is to accept it.

Another example is a situation in which someone is in need of something that can only be had by not being in need of it (e.g, the only way to qualify for a loan is to prove to the bank that you don't need a loan.).

One connotation of the term is that the creators of the "catch-22" situation have created arbitrary rules in order to justify and conceal their own abuse of power.

Tim Weninger, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame, describes a study he conducted on reddit.com in which he had a computer program up-vote or down-vote the latest post every two minutes. As he explains, the experiment shows that early random up-votes makes a post 20 percent more likely to appear on the front page. His conclusion? Just one quarter of one percent of viewers determine what the rest of the site's readers see—so don't believe every trending content rating you see online.

Note
You can use a mouse or a touchpad, but a graphics tablet is very highly recommended for drawing. Graphics tablets have much higher resolution than simpler input devices no matter that the make.

The practical result of this is that you will get somewhat blocker lines if you use a mouse when zoomed out a lot.

Try turning up the "slow position tracking" brush setting to compensate for this if you see lots of straight lines at multiples of 45° and 90°.
