The Infiniti EX35 is a five-door, five-passenger crossover with athletic tendencies. The sportiness comes from the underlying platform, which also forms the basis of the G37 sedan and coupe, cars that have credibly challenged the sports sedan primacy of the German brands. Mercedes is now in the game, too, with its GLK350 premium compact crossover attempting to pose a challenge to the EX35.

While the EX leans toward the luxurious side of the premium crossover theme, there’s no shortage of sharp reflexes to go with the deluxe outfitting. Everything about the EX feels more special than its $34,550 MSRP; this is a vehicle that looks and feels far more expensive.

With a higher starting MSRP of $35,500, you’d expect the GLK to offer more, but it doesn’t. The value is significantly higher in the EX35. At its starting price level, the EX brings standard XM Satellite Radio, leather seats, Infiniti’s Intelligent Key with pushbutton start, a backup camera and rear parking assist. Hell, take the BMW grille away, and that front end could have emerged from any one of several South Korean styling studios … five years ago. Make up your own mind, certainly, but it seems to me that if anything cosmetic is going to turn potential buyers away from the new BMW X3, it’s going to be the view from 12 o’clock. The new BMW X3 is available in three variants: the entry level 20d, the 28i and the range-topping 30d – with rrps of $62,200, $71,900 and $74,900 respectively. Still a great coupe in spite of its age.

Price, performance, and refinement aren't always compatible attributes, but Acura has successfully combined all three in the Integra family of coupes and sedans. Smart-looking, comfortable, and fun to drive, any Integra represents a satisfying choice.

Our favorite is the GS-R: sport coupes don't come much better than this. The GS-R makes any driver feel like a hero, almost anticipating your wishes, filling your senses with delicious sounds and seat-of-the-pants sensations. Open the throttle, and the twin-cam engine growls with authority and revs like there's no tomorrow. The taut suspension helps it slice through corners with precision.

Buyers who prefer a less frenetic driving experience can save thousands by choosing an Integra LS or GS, in coupe or sedan styles. The former makes the most of the Integra's slashing-wedge shape but a four-door offers more practicality, and some drivers even prefer the handling balance of the Integra sedan.

Integra hasn't changed much lately, and an all-new model designed to replace it is just around the corner. Little more than some new color choices and new carpeted floor mats distinguish the 2001 models from the 2000s. Be on the lookout for special pricing and financing offers.

Model Lineup

The Integra lineup comprises coupes and sedans in various levels of trim and tune.

Three-door coupes include the LS ($19,300), GS ($20,950) and the high-performance GS-R ($22,200). There's also a limited-production club-racer coupe called the Type R ($24,350). Four-door sedans are offered in LS ($20,100), GS ($21,500), and GS-R ($22,500) trim.

Even the LS comes fully loaded. GS just adds leather upholstery to the coupe and sedan, plus a spoiler for the coupe and a special console, armrest, and interior woodgrain for the four-door. LS and GS Integras share a 1.8-liter dual overhead-cam 16-valve four-cylinder engine rated at 140 horsepower. It comes with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic ($800) transmission.

GS-R models get a 170-horsepower VTEC version of the same engine. The GS-R is available only with a close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox that's optimized for its more narrow powerband.

Stripped down and near race-ready, the Type R deletes weight-adding luxuries such as cruise control and the otherwise standard power moonroof in favor of a modified, 195-horsepower engine tuned to rev over 8,000 rpm; along with bigger brakes, high-performance tires, its own unique close gearbox ratios and a torque-sensing helical limited-slip differential.

The Type R comes in any color you like, as long as you like Nighthawk Black or Phoenix Yellow.

Walkaround

Controversial when it was introduced, the Integra has aged well, and has now become familiar. Yet its wedge profile, highlighted by those four small projector-beam headlights and that graceful roofline, still looks as handsome and contemporary as any coupe on the market today. The four-door sedan remains unusual, if not unique, in its ability to so comfortably wear the same lines as its sibling coupe.

Interior Features

Like most 2+2 sport coupes, the Integra has plenty of legroom up front, and hardly any in the rear. Sedan versions, with their extra two inches of wheelbase, offer more than four inches more rear legroom; that's just enough for a couple of adults, provided they have a little cooperation from the folks up front. Cramming five people into an Integra sedan is not comfortable or practical.

The seats are slightly firm, above average in lateral support, nicely adjustable, and superior for long distance comfort. Instrumentation is clean, simple, and uncluttered. All controls are well marked and easy to locate without taking your eyes off the road: Just reach out to adjust something and it always seems to be right where it should be.

The top portion of the instrument panel falls away from the driver and passenger, an unusual design which does wonders for forward sightlines. Seeing is the first step in active safety, and Honda ranks with the best for giving drivers a good look at what's going on.

As for passive safety, the Integra inventory is only average: dual airbags up front, with good crash protection built into the unitbody. For 2001, Acura has added an emergency inside trunk release for four-door models. We expect to see side airbags in the next generation. Antilock brakes are standard on all models.

Driving Impressions

The Integra steers crisply and always feels connected to the road. With only 2,600 pounds of car to propel, the standard power plant delivers decent performance. But we love the urgency--and high-tech sound--of the wonderful VTEC engine. That's why we chose a GS-R for this evaluation.

The GS-R claws to 60 mph in a little more than eight seconds, emitting a determined, high-tech snarl in the process. The five-speed gearbox shifts precisely. The foot-pedal layout encourages heel-and-toe downshifting and the variable-assist power steering provides just the right blend of effort and road feel.

Like all Acura and Honda automobiles, the Integra employs Honda's control arm suspension system, with common spring and damping rates right across the board. Handling response is quick and precise. Yet the ride quality is comforable. That may be one of the reasons for the Integra's ongoing popularity: It is sporty, without being harsh. The suspension compliance that goes with a relatively smooth ride, by sporty car standards, shows up as body roll in really hard cornering, and we know from driving at the limit on various race tracks that the GS-R isn't quite as agile as the Honda Prelude.

On a race track the Integra tends toward understeer, but this is easily managed by lifting off the throttle or trail-braking into tight corners, to transfer grip to the front tires and allow the rear end to rotate outward. Body roll limits cornering potential to just below that of the Prelude. The payoff for this concession is superb ride quality. The suspension feels firm, but never jarring. The steering strikes an ideal balance between power assist and sufficient road feel. Your daily rounds probably include a lot more commuting than autocross maneuvers, and feeling every pothole and tar strip isn't really that much fun.

Yet when it's time to let the tachometer wind up on a sinuous country road, the GS-R gives a great account of itself with performance that is superior to what most sport coupes in this size class offer. That it's able to do so without making the owner suffer in everyday driving is a tribute to the suspension engineers.

If you dislike these compromises, there's always the Integra Type R. Add 25 hp to the GS-R package, take away most of the compromises generally made for passenger comfort, and you have an almost-race-ready screamer that's just born to be wild. Integra Type R's torque peak comes on at 7500 rpm (that's torque, not horsepower), while horsepower, all 195 of it, tops out at a dizzying 8000 rpm. That's a high-revving motor. That output works out to more than 108 horsepower per liter, a power-to-weight ratio no other normally aspirated car can match. The Type R rides harder as well, on a uniquely tuned suspension that's lowered 15 mm.

The slightly outrageous Type R is just about the hottest thing going in this class, but it's not for everyone. Carefully consider the compromises it demands before signing on the dotted line.

Not surprisingly, the essential strengths of the Integra have made it a favorite with a new breed of young enthusiasts who modify compact performance cars--instead of the time-honored approach involving small block Chevy V8s. This is a remarkable trend, one that has launched magazines and a major aftermarket industry that supplies all sorts of go-fast and appearance goodies. While hot-rodding may not be your goal, being a hot-rodder's favorite speaks positive volumes about the Integra. Show-car builders like it as a starting point because its basic styling will look contemporary for a long time. Street racers are attracted to a driveline that just won't break, no matter how much horsepower they add.

What does this have to do with you? Maybe nothing. But it does suggest that Honda has created something special here. And with or without the endorsement of the new breed of hot rodders, we still think this is a great buy in a small sporty car.

Final Word

In a class of cars that places a premium on fresh styling, the appearance of the current Integra--though still attractive and distinctive--has become a bit familiar. On the other hand, the Integra has matured into one of the best small sporty coupes (and sedans) in the business. Consider price and value and it all but stands alone. Press coverage has been minimal lately, because there's been little change from year to year, and a new design is around the corner. Until it arrives, however, the current Integra GS-R is still one great sports coupe.

Whether you choose the coupe or the sedan, you're buying value and you're going to have fun.

Couple fled quake in crushed Lexus

A New Zealand couple caught by the earthquake that devastated Christchurch on New Zealand'snorth Island drove their crushed Lexus RX300 our of the rubble and more than 600km to safety.

Ashley and Christine Vendt had ordered lunch at a cafe in Christchurch when the 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit the city's business district. Their Lexus, parked nearby, was bombed with huge chunks of masonry and nearly destroyed when a department store collapsed.

"It was terrifying," Christine Vendt said. "If we had arrived at our car three seconds earlier, I would not be here."

With damage from the quake around them and understandably more concerned with getting away from the area as quick as possible, the couple pushed the rubble off the bonnet of their 2004 Lexus and drove off.

The quake had wreaked havoc on their vehicle all the glass was smashed and the passenger side crumpled.

JOURNEY HOME

Their first stop was back to their nearby hotel before driving back to their home in Nelson some 600km away!

The journey home was made all the more difficult with reduced visibility and bad weather. "The vision out of the side was pretty dodgy. When it started raining I could not put the wipers on and lights coming towards us went in all directions," Ashley Vendt said.

When they stopped for fuel, locals poured out of a pub to look at the couple’s dilapidated vehicle. One bystander quipped, "I wouldn't bother locking it, buddy."

The trip took several hours and, despite many police officers examining the smashed-up Lexus, the pair were allowed to continue their journey.

The Vendts have been told by their insurance that their vehicle was an insurance write-off.

The previous two generations of the Ford Focus have consistently been near the top of the European best sellers list over their combined 13-year life spans, but this new car has even greater responsibility. This is the first Focus designed – from the outset – for European, American and Asian markets combined.

The biggest, most pertinent question is whether the global 'One Ford' strategy this car has been designed under can work in practice. Ford has been here before with the first generation Focus and Mondeo (Contour) but later abandoned it. It's a strategy completely at odds with that of VW, which recently unveiled a version of the Passat specifically designed for the North American market. So we grabbed one of the first cars to land in the UK to see how well the Focus stands up in one of its core European markets.

In Detroit recently, J Mays told us the company was in the process of ‘quieting down' Kinetic design, as part of a wider effort to position Ford as a more up-market brand. The Vertrek concept is an exemplar of how the company might begin to achieve this, but the Focus has the hallmarks of a car designed before this strategy was employed.

The detail design – particularly the rear taillights, blanked-off front grille sections, and a shut line over the front logo mark which makes it looklike the hood isn't closed properly – let it down. But the overall design of the Focus, while busy, is now quite distinct and unique in this class.

The Focus presents an extrovert, expressive langauge, which is a useful point of differentiation in a class of me-too cars. Its competition is indistinct, particularly given the new–found design sobriety of the latest Citroen C4 and Renault Megane. It also answers a key criticism of the old car's design, which many viewed as being overly simple, to the point of being dull.

The latest incarnation has grown physically in order to accommodate its broader brief, yet the packaging feels more compromised for a small family car. Trunk space is now slightly smaller than in the previous model and rear legroom is only average for the class. This is in part born from a strategy to place the core Focus as the more sporty, driver-orientated product, within a five-variant model line-up. A small family in a current generation Focus may be pointed in the direction of the C-Max come new car time according to Ford.

The busy-ness of the design language continues inside with a driver-focused IP. An average six foot-tall male will find themselves slightly hemmed in because, on right-hand drive cars, your left (clutch) leg is pushed against the hard plastic of the lower center stack shroud and transmission tunnel, which feels unnecessarily wide for a front-wheel drive car. The lack of a proper clutch-foot rest doesn't help matters.

The IP itself is of much greater tactile quality than the previous-generation car. The shape molding is superficially interesting too, but the overall environment sends mixed messages. There's an obvious desire to match the likes of Audi in perceived quality, but there's a lack of real cohesion in the design. It is a real kaleidoscope of lines and shapes, and in our eyes has none of the calm elegance that speaks of a premium design.

Simple factors, such as the typography, which isn't consistent between gauges and screens and the center digital display in the gauge cluster which chops off long words, are the kind of things that you won't find in a VW Group product. And the upper audio control with either the piano black or mobile-phone keypad-aping design, clash rather than harmonize.

Switchgear and ergonomics are questionable in places too. As in the Fiesta, it's far too easy to operate the hazard lights while adjusting the radio, and the rear wiper and wash function has become a tiny toggle switch on the end of the stalk.

Despite all of this, we suspect the more grown-up nature and focus (if you'll excuse the pun) on technology will prove to be a big draw for potential owners. They're unlikely to care that there's a slight loss of driving enjoyment caused by the move to electric power steering, more likely to be wooed by the fact that this technology means that – with the right option pack specified – the Focus can effectively park itself.

Yet we can't help but wonder whether some of the car's growing pains have been caused by the simple fact that the Focus must now work in so many varied contexts, comply with so many different regulations and appeal to consumers with wildly different tastes and expectations. As such, the Focus has become a car that is a jack-of-all trades, but appears to be master of none.

You’re looking at the production ninth-generation Civic, unveiled ahead of its official launch this spring in the US. Think you’ve seen it before? At the 2011 Detroit show last month, Honda rolled out the Honda Civic Concept in both coupe and sedan form – the production cars are largely identical to those show cars.

In the US, the 2012 Civic lineup includes a sedan and a coupe with standard petrol models, a new “HF” high fuel economy version, the “Si” performance version, one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant.

The Civic Hybrid will have a larger 110 hp 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine coupled with lithium-ion batteries, an upgrade from the old 1,339 cc engine and Ni-MH batteries. The CVT is carried forward. The Hybrid will feature ECO Assist technology and specific aerodynamic components. Honda expects it to achieve an EPA-estimated city/highway combined fuel economy of 45 mpg (15.9 km/l), an improvement of 4 mpg (1.4 km/l) over the old car.

While tagged as a fuel economy version, the HF is powered solely by a petrol engine – it’s not a hybrid. It does however get the ECO Assist system (standard across the Civic range, except Si) and the Hybrid’s aero bits. Combined with the standard 140 hp 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine/5-speed auto combo, Honda expects the HF to achieve up to 14.5 km/l on the highway, better than the non-HF’s 13.8 km/l highway figure.

The sporty Si is available as sedan or coupe, and is powered by a 200 hp/230 Nm 2.4 litre i-VTEC engine. This high revving unit is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. Despite the larger engine (used to be a 2.0) and a 22% increase in torque, the Civic Si is expected to get a better economy figure from the EPA.

As you can see, the new Civic retains the familiar silhouette, but the area below the C-pillar seems to be more sculpted. And while the front design doesn’t depart much from the current car, the rear is all new, and more sporty looking in my opinion.

The cabin, seen for the first time here, follows the same two-tier with blue lighting sci-fi theme, but the centre console is now angled towards the driver. The top tier also includes a supplementary screen, perhaps to show ECO Assist or stereo functions. There’s also a new look steering wheel. To its left is the green ECON button, essentially a “power save mode” that the Insight Hybrid also has.

When Village Motors in Los Angeles opens the first "Fiat Studio" this month, it will be the first of 130 such showrooms that will open by the end of the year to sell the Fiat 500. This small, four-passenger hatchback is part of Fiat's plan to combine itself withChrysler, and re-enter the U.S. market. The Italian automaker controls Chrysler through its 20% stake, and has set its sights on becoming a bigger global automotive player.

Many are bullish on the return on Fiat to the U.S. after a 27-year absence, this despite the recent closure of such automotive brands as Mercury, Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer. AutoNation, the biggest auto retailer in the world, will be opening seven of the Fiat dealerships.

"It's a tough market they're entering, but the product is very competitive and that's a good start," says Rebecca Lindland, auto industry analyst with IHS Global Insight.

Fashion or Flop?

Indeed, the 500, a diminutive model that will compete with the Mini Cooper, as well as cheaper compact models like the Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent, should appeal especially to car buyers who lean toward making buying decisions based on design and fashion. The 500 is more cute than anything else, with plastic body-color appliques on the dashboard to give the interior a fun atmosphere.

The 500 conjures up images of '60s era cars like the original Fiat 500 or Volkswagen Beetle, which had metal dashboards the same color as the exterior. Its 1.4-liter engine performs better mated to a manual transmission, but the automatic is not a dog by any means. Offering 30 mpg city/38 mpg on the highway, its fuel economy numbers are a bit low for a car this small, but they're not uncompetitive.

The 500 has a distinct styling advantage over the Yaris, the current Accent (though a new design is coming this summer), the Nissan Versa and Kia Rio. But there is a price premium for it, with stickers ranging from $15,500 for the entry level "Pop" model with a manual transmission, to $17,500 for the automatic "Lounge." In between, there is a "Sport" edition, also with a manual. A Yaris, by comparison, starts at less than $13,000.

There are ten exterior and ten interior colors to choose from, meaning buyers will be able to spec out their 500 to look unlike their neighbor's. Later this year, the company will add a Cabrio convertible, as well as an electric model. Next year, the Fiat Studios will get a turbocharged Abarth version, and potentially a micro-van based on the same platform.

Pound-for-pound and dollar-for-dollar, straight value shoppers might be hard pressed to choose a Fiat 500. But there is an attraction of a European brand the others don't have. And of course, Fiat it is the "new new thing."

The Mexican plant where the 500 is built is set up to produce 130,000 cars annually, but it's anyone's guess how many Fiat will sell in the U.S. That capacity number also includes Central and South America, where Fiat has been a mainstay and doesn't have brand awareness problems. Small cars sell better in those markets than in the U.S., meaning if Fiat sells 30,000 500's in 2012 after all its dealerships are open, it would be a good showing. The company is planning a no-haggle strategy for buyers.

Putting Bad Quality in the Rearview Mirror

"As long as they have the quality high and competitive so as to avoid bad publicity, they will do well if they play up the 'La Dolce Vita" personality of Fiat and the Italian roots," says Charlie Hughes, industry consultant at Brand Rules, and the former marketing chief of Fiat when it was operating in the U.S. in the late 1970s.

Hughes says the dark days of terrible Fiat quality during the Carter administration will only be relevant to a small number of buyers with long memories.
