For Immediate Release:

San Francisco CA, June 17, 2008. Gilbane Group Inc. today announced at the Gilbane San Francisco conference the general release of Enterprise Search Markets and Applications - Capitalizing on Emerging Demand. Gilbane San Francisco takes place at the Westin Market hotel this Wednesday through Friday. Registration is available on site.

The 85-page report summarizes the marketplace in a way that helps buyers map their needs to search products that will deliver the most value in the shortest amount of time, at a reasonable cost. Additionally, buyers will find practical guidance about product evaluation, selection, implementation, deployment and maintenance. A vendor directory and glossary round out the content directed to new buyers. Search users who are expanding or seeking improvements to their current experience will find advice on making incremental adjustments in deployment. Vendors who are developing, selling, marketing, or supporting customers with enterprise search applications will find aids to competitive intelligence in the market landscape, directory and glossary.

"Search technology is moving out of its legacy roots into the mainstream of enterprise applications as scores of products aimed at a "behind the firewall" audience crowd the marketplace. But it is a learning process for early adopters as they work to ensure positive business outcomes.” Said Lynda Moulton, author and Lead Analyst for Enterprise Search at Gilbane Group. “This report is built on important commentary from a survey group, all with recent experience implementing current search products. The variety of approaches underscores that buyers are far from a monolithic group. I was struck by how every story has a different angle on the number of decisions and variables each considers to make "search" a winning business proposition for their key constituents.”

Availability
Enterprise Search Markets and Applications - Capitalizing on Emerging Demand is available at no charge for immediate download at http://gilbane.com/Research-Reports.html and this week at the Gilbane Group booth at Gilbane San Francisco.

Enterprise Search Markets and Applications - Capitalizing on Emerging Demand, was sponsored by Coveo, ISYS, and Vivisimo.

The Web Content Management track at Gilbane San Francisco starts off with a bang! Or at least a discussion, between the leaders of five WCM vendors.

WCM-1: WCM Keynote - State of Web Content Management
We open this year's Web Content Management track with a keynote panel of technology and market experts who will discuss their perspectives on the three or four most important concerns of business managers and IT professionals in planning for and executing WCM initiatives over the next year. The panelists are chosen based on their depth of knowledge within WCM and their ability to identify, analyze, and articulate what the current key concerns are for WCM customers. This interactive discussion will help attendees to identify and address potential liabilities in their own WCM strategies as well as to understand what leading practitioners and technology suppliers envision in their own project/product roadmaps.

Gilbane Group Releases New Report on Enterprise use of Social Media

Cambridge MA, June 9, 2008. Gilbane Group Inc. today announced the general release of Collaboration and Social Media 2008- Taking Stock of Today's Experiences and Tomorrow's Opportunities, a comprehensive investigation of the growing market for social computing technologies and solutions.

Collaboration and Social Media 2008 shows how social media, based on “Web 2.0” technologies, is approaching the tipping-point. First generation tools now in widespread use, such as text-oriented email, web sites, and shared workspaces, are soon to be supplemented by social media applications that incorporate blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, rich media, and other innovative technologies. The Gilbane research report predicts the transition from horizontal applications to vertical solutions, and offers a number of strategies to help companies with the transition.

Co-authored by Geoffrey Bock Lead Analyst for Collaboration and Steve Paxhia, Director of the Publishing Strategy & Technology Practice, the 130-page report combines a national survey of marketing executives with in-depth case studies of ten companies and a comprehensive vendor catalog. Nora Ganin Barnes, Director of the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, led the survey team that interviewed business leaders in medium and large American companies.

“Compared with the high penetration rates for first generation tools, adoption rates for Web 2.0 applications are still at a low level,” says Bock. “But marketing executives who are using Web 2.0 solutions rate many of these new technologies as being very effective. As word spreads, I believe that companies are going to profit greatly from new ways of doing business.”

The case studies illustrate how social media is used to build brands, generate new ideas, and improve the efficiency of the interactions among all stakeholders including employees and customers. Today, companies achieve measurable business results at a fraction of the cost and time previously required. “The new generation of collaboration and social media solutions are bringing companies closer together as well as closer to their customers,” adds Paxhia. “This often represents a fundamentally new way of doing business.”

“We first found serious enterprise use of blog and wiki technologies, in our report published in March 2005; clearly things have come a long way.”, said Frank Gilbane, CEO of the Gilbane Group. “It will be fascinating tracking enterprise use of social use as it reaches a new scale in 2008.”

Availability
Collaboration and Social Media 2008 is available at no charge for immediate download at http://gilbane.com/Research-Reports.html

Collaboration and Social Media 2008 was sponsored by EMC, SAP, Near-Time, Octopz, Awareness, MindTouch, WetPaint, and Zoho.

Thursday, June 26 2008, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Richly-formatted reports, often automatically generated by enterprise applications, contain a wealth of information that companies can use to accelerate efficient decision-making or quick diagnosis of customer problems. But business managers and users have long been stymied by complicated technology tools. They need simple, specialized search to aggregate content already output in formats they understand, reports hidden because of far-flung enterprise distribution and storage.

Apps Associates, Oracle, and The Gilbane Group join forces to illustrate the potential simplicity for harvesting the value data hidden in rich content that already exists. Topics include:

The pain points involved in harvesting valuable data in enterprise reports.

The technology capabilities that are required to address the pain.

The solutions that combine these capabilities to deliver application-ready report search.

The panel will also discuss real-world business scenarios that illustrate the value of enterprise search solutions that are fine-tuned for reports. Participants are Lynda Moulton, Lead Analyst for Enterprise Search, Gilbane Group; Jinyu Wang, Principle Product Manager, Oracle Secure Enterprise Search; and Ajay Kapur, Principal and VP - Product Development, Apps Associates.

Moderated by Gilbane Group. Sponsored and hosted by Apps Associates. Registration is open at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/176132958

We have 5 in-depth workshops at the end of our conference in San Francisco. The workshops take place on June 20th. Learn other organizations' experiences in implementing enterprise search from Gilbane Group's Lynda Moulton.

B: Enterprise Search: How to Successfully Adopt and Deploy Search
Lynda Moulton, Lead Analyst for Enterprise Search, the Gilbane Group

Drawing on a body of research assembled over the past year Lynda Moulton will focus on the search marketplace with a heavy emphasis on what users are currently experiencing, what they want and need, and a myriad of offerings that are vertically positioned in the market. During this three hour session she will share insights into:

Unique aspects of search products and their target audiences in the marketplace

Instructional anecdotes of real but anonymous user experiences that will highlight "dos and don'ts" for how to select, implement and deploy search

Team building for selection, implementation, deployment and use case scenario development

Finally, drawing on her own experiences as a software vendor, she will share ideas for building a long term productive and healthy relationship with your search vendor

The recording of the Internet radio broadcast that Bill and I did last week with Scott Draughon is now available for listening and download. Scroll down to May 1 on the past programs page on mytechnologylawyer.com. The broadcast focused on hot topics at Gilbane San Francisco, June 18-20.

One highlight of the show is the segment with Bill Rosenblatt, recognized authority on enterprise rights management and progam lead on Gilbane's upcoming research on Enterprise Rights Management: Business Imperatives and Implementation Readiness. Bill provided an overview of ERM technology and its use for enterprise content, which will be the focus of a panel in San Francisco. Read more about our upcoming report on ERM adoption. There's still time to take the survey.

The broadcast also featured a segment with Brad Kain, co-founder and president of Quoin, who's talking about XML content strategies in San Francisco; a summary of our coverage of enterprise search topics; and a nod to the session on software-as-a-service, with senior executives of some of the leading suppliers of SaaS solutions for content management.

We'll be doing at least one more Internet radio show prior to Gilbane San Francisco. Please send us an email if there's a topic of specific interest to you and your colleagues.

      For Immediate Release:

Authored by publishing experts Steve Paxhia and Bill Rosenblatt, report includes market size, 22 case studies, and opinions of industry visionaries

Cambridge MA, May 7, 2008. Gilbane Group Inc. today announced the general release of Digital Magazine and Newspaper Editions: Growth, Trends, and Best Practices, a pioneering and comprehensive study of the growing market for digital editions of periodical publications. The study features statistics that, in an industry first, unify audited data from two sources (BPA and ABC) with data from unaudited publications. Highlights from the statistics include:

The number of business-to-business (B-to-B) publications offering digital editions has increased over 300% from 2005 to 2007, with total subscriptions also increasing over 300%.

The number of consumer publications offering digital editions has increased over 200% from 2005 to 2007, with total subscriptions also increasing over 200%.

Digital vs. print penetration of B-to-B subscribers is up from 13.3 to 15.0%, while digital penetration of consumer publication subscribers is down from 2.2 to 1.4%.

The 130-page report includes 22 case studies of publishers, representing several dozen digital edition titles, which showcase a number of industry best practices identified by the study’s authors. These span a wide range including big-name consumer magazines (Hearst, Playboy), leading B-to-B publishers (Reed Business Information, American Legal Media), daily newspapers (Toronto Sun, The Guardian), and catalog and directory publishers (Welco, Canadian Donors Guide).

The report also includes insights from five publishing technology visionaries on the state of digital editions and ideas for how to make them work for publishers. Visionaries include Gloria Adams of PennWell, Brent Lewis of Harlequin Enterprises, Mike Edelhart of Infovell, Peter Meirs of Time Inc., and Marta Wohrle, formerly of Hachette Filipacchi.

Digital Magazine and Newspaper Editions: Growth, Trends, and Best Practices presents data from leading digital publishing companies. Contributors include Nstein, Nxtbook Media, Olive Software, and Texterity (Platinum Sponsors); Advanced Publishing, YUDU Media, and Zinio (Gold Sponsors); and Audit Bureau of Circulations and BPA Worldwide (Data Sponsors).

Authors of the report are Steve Paxhia, Director of Publishing Strategy & Technology Practice at Gilbane, and Bill Rosenblatt, Senior Analyst. Both are recognized authorities on publishing business and technology strategy and have worked with many different publishing businesses and technology vendors. Said Paxhia, “Our study shows that growth to date of the number of digital publications and the number of digital subscriptions has been impressive. While this paradigm shift is still in its early stages, there are plenty of examples where publishers using today’s best practices have generated impressive results. This is the most exciting time to be in publishing since Gutenberg invented the printing press.”

Frank Gilbane, CEO of the Gilbane Group, said, “This new report on digital publications illustrates our continued thought leadership in the publishing market, which is embracing many of the content technologies that we have been following since 1993. At the same time, it’s only one of several first-of-a-kind market studies that Gilbane Group is releasing this year.”

Availability
The study is available for immediate download at http://gilbane.com/Research-Reports.html

About Gilbane Group, Inc.

Summit to Take Place on June 17 Prior to Start of Gilbane Conference; Full-Day Event to Focus on Dynamic Delivery Across Multiple Media Channels

San Francisco, CA – May 6, 2008 – The Gilbane Group and Lighthouse Seminars, today announced that the 2008 CM Pros U.S. Spring Summit will take place on June 17 to coincide with the fourth Annual Gilbane San Francisco Conference which is June 18-20 at the Westin Market Hotel in San Francisco (http://gilbanesf.com). The CM Pros Summit offers attendees an in-depth forum for discussing the business drivers and technical issues of managing and delivering dynamic content.

Content Management Systems are viewed by many as being comprised of three predominant components: acquisition, management, and delivery. This summit will empower attendees with tangible and tactical real world solutions for the delivery component of content management.

"The Summit program focuses on content management delivery and the increasing demands of content presentation,” said Andrew Wilcox, CM Pros Technology Director and Summit Program Manager. “We have packed a one-day program with sessions that will deliver practical, real-world solutions and provide attendees with a competitive industry edge. The program includes 'Quiz the Experts', a lively game show format offering attendees the opportunity to ask questions of industry experts, and introduces the 'Use Case Challenge' where CMS vendors demonstrate their solutions for publishing content from one source to multiple channels.”

The CM Pros Summit includes users, practitioners and vendors of every aspect of content and digital asset management including: information architecture, usability, implementation, metadata and taxonomy, search, change management, software and tools. At the CM Pros Summit, speakers and attendees will:

Leverage best practices for dynamic delivery

Hear the latest research, case studies, and best practices

Share experiences with others and learn from peers

Network at the event

Identify next steps in content management implementations

Collaborate for solutions. Meet with partners, suppliers, and potential customers

Hear about new aspects of content management; drive new technology development

Keynoting the summit is Steve Powers, Senior Analyst with Forrester Research. Enterprises are increasingly using rich internet applications (RIA) frameworks - such as Ajax, JavaFX, Flex, and Silverlight - to provide more interactive and dynamic customer experiences on their Web sites, and this has prompted many to question their investments in Web content management. In this session Steve will address how usage of RIAs may force organizations to re-think Web content management strategies.

“We are extremely pleased that the CM Pros Summit will take place in conjunction with our annual conference in San Francisco,” said Frank Gilbane, Chair of the Gilbane Conferences. “Partnering with CM Professionals only increases the value we offer attendees in providing actionable information on current content management technologies that attendees can implement immediately.”

Attend the Summit and join CM Pros for $75, a 25 percent discount off the regular fee. To take advantage of this offer, visit www.cmprofessionals.org and enter discount code: GILBSPR2008. Current members who renew before June 17 will also receive the discount with a year added at the date of renewal. Also, CM Pros members receive a $200 discount off the cost of the Gilbane conference.
(Cross-Posted from the WCM Blog)

While many of our clients use analytics applications to support their WCM projects and e-commerce initiatives, other clients not yet using analytics often ask what value can be derived from doing so. The answer depends on the purpose of the client's website.

For online commerce sites, analytics functionality can be invaluable in that it allows companies to track user behavior on the site and to correlate user behavior with conversion rates, average sales prices, and other useful sales metrics. The bottom line is that analytics almost always increase online revenues. Analytics can also be of great value to non e-commerce clients by enabling them to monitor content consumption rates and to gauge the relevance and effectiveness of content through the analysis of consumption patterns. This naturally makes analytics (sometimes built into "campaign management" modules) indispensable to marketing professionals interested either in optimizing content dissemination on information-based sites ("content portals") or in maximizing profitability on retail sites.
