Join us for a presentation by Michael Hayslip on Thursday, March 4. Mike is a photographer and GVAL board member. His photo “Lakeside Silos” won first place in the photography category in the 2009 art show. His work is currently on display at Art on Boston gallery in Chandler and the Coffee Cove in Gilbert. Mike’s favorite subjects are wide-angle landscapes and close-up shots of flowers and objects. He will discuss the differences between traditional and digital photography, the basics of getting a good shot, and how to photograph your artwork for art show entries. If you have a camera, bring it with you to the meeting for a hands-on demonstration.

If you plan to attend the membership meeting, bring your artwork to share with the club. We have two opportunities each month: Critique and Artist of the Month. Pieces for Critique should be an unframed, unfinished work in progress. The Critique is a great way to get feedback for improvement or suggestions to solve any problems you are having with the work. The Artist of the Month piece should be finished and framed for presentation. The Artist of the Month is chosen via a vote secret ballot vote by all present at the meeting. The winner receives a cash prize and a write up on our website.

General membership meeting: Thursday, March 4, 2010. Art critique starts at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation begins at 7 p.m.

Meeting location: The Gilbert Historical Museum, 10 S Gilbert Road Gilbert, AZ (SW corner of Gilbert and Elliot). Parking is available on the North side of the building.

There is a maximum of 15 students and minimum of 8 students for this. Dustin is offering a fantastic deal for our club. 100.00 each student for basically, a 3 day seminar. The student will pay the fee for the class. GVAL will secure the location for the demo and the 1 day studio time, wherever that may be.

First day will be a 2 hour demo, most likely, but not definitely at the Gilbert Historical Museum. Second day will be in studio painting, same location. Third day we go on location. We are looking at three different locations and will be voting. Reply to this email with your choice ONLY if you intend to attend. Please reply by Feb 1, 2010:

SUPERSTITIONS

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM

GILBERT RIPARIAN PRESERVE

Contact Michelle Cornelius if you have any questions. We should have the details worked out very soon and would want to know if you are attending by Sunday, February 28.

Elizabeth is the artist liaison for the library as well as many of the town’s other art venues including the courts building. You should contact her directly (see below) if you wish to display at the library or anywhere else that is associated with the Town of Gilbert.

Join us for a presentation by Deb Randall on Thursday, February 4. Deb is an active GVAL member who won second place in the mixed media category in the 2009 art show. Her artwork fuses a soft painting style with bits of text and newspaper clippings. The combination creates subtle textures and depth in her work. At the February meeting, Deb will talk about her technique and cover the basics of creating mixed media pieces.

The Artist of the Month piece should be finished and ideally framed for presentation. The Artist of the Month is chosen via a vote secret ballot vote by all present at the meeting. The winner receives a cash prize and a write up on our website.

General membership meeting: Thursday, February 4, 2010.
