<p>A <a class="zem_slink" title="Google" rel="homepage" href="http://google.com">Google</a> <a class="zem_slink" title="Pay per click" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_per_click">pay-per-click</a> program can help you get instant traffic to your site and jump start your sales and marketing activity. Though Google AdWords is a very easy to use tool to manage ads on Google, running an effective marketing program and, more importantly, a good ROI is what everyone hopes to achieve.  Six out of 10 business owners feel that Google pay-per-click simply doesn’t work, or delivers very modest results. According to them, clicks and traffic is delivered but this fails to convert into sales.</p>
<p>We explore possible reasons for getting better results out of the supposedly simple to manage Google pay-per-click program. A well-managed pay-per-click campaign is one that not only gets clicks but also converts the clicks into sales at a lower cost per click and delivers a higher conversion rate or ROI.</p>
<p>Here are 10 very simple tips to improve the effectiveness of your pay-per-click program and ensure a better conversion rate at a lower cost per click.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Number of Keywords</strong>: Don’t be greedy and choose hundreds of keywords for your campaign. Not only does it make it difficult to find out which keywords work and deliver targeted traffic, but it also makes it difficult to track and manage the campaign. Instead, start with 10-15 keywords per campaign and test them thoroughly by running the campaign for couple of weeks or more. Based on the results, try to add more or remove existing keywords.</li>
<li><strong>Keyword Match Criteria</strong>: Broad, Phrase or Exact Match - which one to choose? Let’s take an example. If we choose a keyword “quality carpet cleaning” and apply a broad match, it means that someone searching for “buy quality carpet” will see your ad listing since it’s a broad match. Using the same keyword as a phrase match will show your ad listing when someone searches for “quality carpet cleaning riverside”. An exact match only shows your ad listing, when there is an exact match or someone searches for “quality carpet cleaning” in the example. So take this example into consideration when you choose the keyword match type. One more thing to take a note is that one keyword chosen with wrong match criteria can spoil the entire campaign. For example, if you choose “carpet cleaning”, “upholstery cleaning”, “tile cleaning” etc. as phrase match type and choose “carpet” as a broad match type, then your ads will start to show even if “carpet repairs” is searched, defeating the purpose of choosing the other phrase/exact match keywords.</li>
<li><strong>Using relevant, traffic oriented and targeted keywords</strong>: Using keywords that are too generic or using keywords that may not be popularly searched will decline the performance of the campaign. The non-targeted keywords will waste your marketing dollars by attracting irrelevant traffic while the low traffic keywords will get you too little clicks. A better option would be to check the traffic on the keywords using Google Tool https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal while choosing the keywords.</li>
<li><strong>Improve keyword <a class="zem_slink" title="Quality Score" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_Score">quality score</a></strong>: A higher keyword quality score means that your ad is more relevant to your campaign keywords and that Google is most likely going to rank your listing higher and at a lower cost per click. To improve quality score, improve <a class="zem_slink" title="Landing page" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_page">landing page</a> quality by using more targeted content, use keywords in the ad copy, set the appropriate bid amounts on keywords, and try to maintain a good <a class="zem_slink" title="Click-through rate" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click-through_rate">click-through rate</a> (CTR). A CTR above one percent is considered good. For the campaigns which have a good CTR historically, Google tends to shows the ads high enough on the paid listings at a lower cost per click (CPC).</li>
<li><strong>Writing targeted ad copy</strong>: Writing simple, effective ad copy with a clear message and a call to action text works much better than including too many technical details in the ad. If it’s a regionally targeted ad, which most often cleaning companies do, try to add the region/city name in the ad. Also, try to make use of your campaign keywords in the ad copy. This will improve the relevancy and quality score of a keyword ultimately giving you a lower cost per click and higher ranking on Google.</li>
<li><strong>Writing multiple ad copies</strong>: Writing multiple ad copies will allow Google to rotate the ads and automatically show ads which work better than the other. A simple trick may be to just change the title of the ad and re-use the two-line description ad text. By running multiple ads, you can find out which ad copy generates more clicks and retain it and remove ads which are not performing well.</li>
<li><strong>Choosing the right geography</strong>: Be it a 50 mile service area around your office, one city, multiple cities or states or countries, Google allows you to choose the exact geography where you would like to show your ad listing. Without choosing the right geography, you will end up wasting your marketing dollars. So consider researching your service area on Google and select the geographical location where you want to target the ads.</li>
<li><strong>U</strong><strong>sing search versus content network</strong>: Google provides an option to run your ads on search network and content network. Search networks include Google and Google partner sites like AOL.com, etc. Content networks consist of websites that have chosen to show Google Ad listing. If your target prospects/customers visit a particular website, then you can choose to show your ad listing on that site. Considering the pay-per-click model; it may not harm to add some content sites. Try to keep the number not too high as irrelevant content sites lower down the overall CTR of the campaign and raise the bid amount on keywords. But certainly consider experimenting with some sites and add sites that you think your target customers would shop on.</li>
<li><strong>Choosing a budget</strong>: This depends on your marketing budget. Start with a smaller budget sufficient to test out your campaign and see what works. Sometimes campaigns may not give you instant return on your investment. So avoid overspending without running a test campaign and knowing what works.</li>
<li><strong>Landing page design</strong>: The landing page or the page which the prospects see when they click on your ad listing should have enough information to be able to catch the prospects attention and make up their mind to contact you. The landing page should use relevant keywords that you have chosen in the campaign so that keyword quality score is higher.</li>
</ol>

<p>The first format that you will want to take a look at is the famous leader board ad format with a 728 x 90 size. This is a very popular format with 4 ad units and it seems that it converts rather well on most sites.</p>
<p>The next <a class="zem_slink" title="Web banner" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_banner">banner ad</a> layout is the 468 x 60 pixels ad. This is a typical banner design that can be placed almost everywhere. This ad displays 2 ads one alongside the other. The half banner obviously is half the size of the full banner and it&#8217;s format is 234 x 60 pixels holding only 1 ad. These are the horizontal banners but adsense also has some vertical designs the first one being the 120 x 240 pixels</p>
<p>For the small type of ads that go in tight spots on your site you can use the buttons with the 125 x 125 square size holding 1 single ad. This is a perfect spot to showcase a single ad if you combine the ad with an attractive background color</p>
<p>If you need ads to be shown on one or either side of your content a skyscraper holding 3 or 4 ads can be the solution. The skyscraper was specifically designed for this purpose and its format is 120 x 600 pixels. If you would like to have more space for ads choose the 160 x 600 wide sky scraper because this one can hold 5 ads</p>
<p>Several rectangle formats are used for in content display. The first one of them is the 180 x 150 pixels small rectangle holding one ad. <p>If you use image-based Adsense ads, you can choose the Leader Board which you will find placed across the top of many <a class="zem_slink" title="Website" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Website">websites</a>. It measures 728 X 90. The Banner is a smaller ad that measure 468 X 60. The <a class="zem_slink" title="Skyscraper" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyscraper">Sky Scraper</a> and Wide Sky Scraper are also choices for use on the sides of a webpage. Or you can choose the Medium Rectangle format. All of these image ads hold a single image.</p>

<p><strong>Time</strong> - The amount of work you do will be accountable for your results. Part timers will have to wait a little longer before they see results. You can&#8217;t trick <a class="zem_slink" title="Google" rel="homepage" href="http://google.com">Google</a> and no cheating is allowed. If you get in to a fight with Google, you are finished. Check out the marketing forums with all of the negative comments.</p>
<p>Testing a niche can be done using Google Adwords over a day and monitoring the impressions it receives. That will tell you if people are searching for it and if they are clicking. Don&#8217;t overspend a $5 budget and you should be okay by morning time. This won&#8217;t cost as much as a domain and you won&#8217;t have to write content before you know if it is profitable or not. If your website isn&#8217;t doing so hot then you have to ask yourself something. How can you expect something to happen without any back links? Once you are on the first page in the top 5, you will really see what the niche is capable of.</p>
<p>It is crazy to think that your website will end up on page one the moment it is indexed. So it is important to get your website ranking with a bunch of links to all of its pages. Try to do this for a few months and check back to see where the site is. PPV Marketing has been used for years to drive traffic to websites, blogs, squeeze pages for list building, and affiliate offers. However, it&#8217;s extremely wise to get educated before trying PPV lest you like throwing your money away. This is usually true of people&#8217;s first PPV campaigns. But the good news is there is quite a bit of information available, and it&#8217;s 100% possible to improve your performance. <p>The internet is full of articles, ebooks and hype about using blogs with <a class="zem_slink" title="Google" rel="homepage" href="http://google.com">Google</a>’s Adsense program to make money. The formula for success, it seems, is simple. You blog, place ads, get traffic, visitors click on the ads and you get paid. The question many people want to know is, can we make a profit?</p>
<p>This question has been difficult to answer, in large part, because of the Google <a class="zem_slink" title="Terms of service" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_service">Terms of Service</a> for Adsense users. Although the terms have recently been loosened somewhat, users were long prohibited from sharing personal information regarding their success levels and other key statistics that might have provided prospective for-profit bloggers from developing a clear perspective on the profit potential available.</p>
<p>If you are curious about whether or not you can make blogging with Adsense a legitimate moneymaker, it is worth conducting this relatively simple exercise. The results can give you an idea of whether or not it is worth your time.</p>
<p><strong>First</strong>, determine how long it will take you to build your blog. Consider the set up time and the time necessary to do initial promotion and to write at least ten to twenty starter posts. We will say our <a class="zem_slink" title="Preparation time" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preparation_time">preparation time</a> is fifteen hours.</p>
<p><strong>Second</strong>, estimate how much time it will take on a weekly basis to do additional promotion and to add at least two new posts. Multiply this figure by 52 (the number of weeks in a year). For this example, we will set promotion time at 156 hours (3 hours per week).</p>
<p><strong>Third</strong>, add preparation time and Promotion time. This will give us an idea of the total time required. In this case, total time is 171 total hours.</p>
<p><strong>Fourth</strong>, investigate the average value of an ad click in your niche. You can use the Overture bid tool, easily found online, to get a reasonable idea of the value of each click. In order to make your projection “safe,” reduce that number by half. This yields PPC, or “<a class="zem_slink" title="Pay per click" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_per_click">pay per click</a>.” Let’s say the bid tool says clicks related to our keyword are worth about forty cents. Our PPC is .20.</p>
<p><strong>Fifth</strong>, determine how much your time is worth. Do you feel your blogging time should generate at least $10 per hour? $20? This is a matter of personal preference. We will assess the value of our time at $10 per hour for this exercise.</p>
<p><strong>Sixth</strong>, assume a <a class="zem_slink" title="Click-through rate" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click-through_rate">click-through rate</a> of eight percent. This is a low figure, as many blogs can generate click-through rates approximating 25%. Click-through rate is expressed as CTR.</p>
<p>Now it’s time to perform the critical calculation. We need to determine the required number of visitors necessary to produce enough money to make the process worthwhile. To find the number of visitors required you need to do a little algebra. You multiply visitors (unknown) times pay per click(.20) times click thru rate (.08) which will equal how much your time is worth (10) times total time required (171).</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to do the algebra, the number of visitors would be 139,200. In order to make the process pay, you will have to drive 106,875 visitors to the blog over the course of one year. That translates to approximately 292 visitors per day, on average. Obviously, that is a very “doable” number based on the amount of time we have set aside for the process.</p>
<p>So, for our example, blogging for bucks with Adsense is a winner.</p>
<p>Perform these calculations based on your own unique circumstances and you can determine the viability of earning money with a blog and Adsense.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s a lot of conflicting advice from <a class="zem_slink" title="Internet" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet">Internet</a> marketing experts on how to profit from the popularity of social marketing.</p>
<p>Social marketing is about growing your <a class="zem_slink" title="Business" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business">business</a> through user-driven websites like youtube, <a class="zem_slink" title="Facebook" rel="homepage" href="http://facebook.com">facebook</a> and digg (plus hundreds more).</p>
<p>Some advice says you should create a large number of different user identities on many sites and then start promoting your own sites to drive extra traffic.</p>
<p>The alternative view is that you should select one or two relevant sites carefully, building a personal profile on them and contributing value to the communities before even thinking about marketing anything of your own.</p>
<p>The problem is that both approaches can work - and perhaps the first may even show the fastest results.</p>
<p>But, leaving aside that it risks getting you banned by the sites, it seems a bit like joining 10 different local networking groups like the Chamber of Commerce or BNI - and rushing round them all just handing out order forms rather than concentrating on building strong relationships in one or two.</p>
<p>And, as many members of social websites are strongly against marketing or selling - it&#8217;s more like going to the health club or the golf club and expecting everyone to buy from you.</p>
<p>The Law of <a class="zem_slink" title="Friends" rel="hulu" href="http://www.hulu.com/friends/">Friends</a>, from Kevin Hogan&#8217;s Psychology of Persuasion, says that people will be more likely to follow your request if they believe you have their interests at heart.</p>
<p>This arguably applies even more in the rapidly changing online environment. People find it harder to know who to trust so they are looking for someone who will help them rather than sell to them.</p>
<p>The huge benefit of this new approach is that anyone can have access to a huge pool of contacts around the world.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear that this type of networking and marketing will grow in importance but that most business owners have not yet started to take advantage of it.</p>
<p>These are some of the keys to success with social marketing:</p>
<p>Define your objectives: Decide what you want e.g. contacts or information.</p>
<p><strong>Be selective</strong>: Stick to what you are looking for and don&#8217;t get sidetracked.</p>
<p><strong>Manage your time</strong>: Set a specific amount of daily time for this task and don&#8217;t go over it.</p>
<p><strong>Give before you expect to receive</strong>: Contribute to the communities.</p>
<p><strong>Be consistent</strong>: When you have selected the sites you want to use, visit them regularly.</p>
<p>Social marketing is a fast developing field that&#8217;s still in its early days. Spending a little time to learn how it can help you build your business could be very rewarding.</p>
