New Zealand Bans Online Poker But Set To Offer Online Lotto Sales

New Zealanders cannot legally play poker on the Internet, but they will soon be able to buy lottery tickets online, exhibiting the NZ government's protectionist policy towards online gambling, following the path of other countries like the United States who is facing World Trade Organization legal action costing them billions of dollars in compensation to other WTO members for violating trade treaties, and Sweden, France and Germany who are facing legal action from the European Commission for violating EU free trade law within the 27-member states.

New Zealand's Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker has yet to approve the necessary changes to Lotto's game rules, but suggests that may be a formality given "Parliament has previously determined that NZ Lotteries can offer its products over the Internet".

He is referring to how, in 2003, the TAB and NZ Lotteries were excluded from an online gambling ban passed. The purpose of the exemption was to keep people from spending their money with offshore gaming companies, and instead to financially benefit New Zealand.

Lotteries Commission corporate communications manager Karen Jones said that customers would soon be able to purchase Saturday Lotto, Big Wednesday and Daily Keno tickets online, according to the New Zealand Herald, but she was unable to confirm a firm launch date.

COMING AS SOON AS APRIL

However, franchisees believe lotteries may begin selling Lotto tickets online as early as next month, quotes the Dominion Post. Many franchisees fear that online lottery sales will reduce the number of clients coming to their establishments to buy tickets.

Lotto outlets, which now number more than 1000, earned $51.5 million last year from a 7 per cent commission on ticket sales.

The owner of one franchise in central Wellington is certain that fewer people will come into his shop when ticket sales go online. He says 60 per cent of his sales are for Lotto, grossing about $20,000 each week.

"Am I expecting it to hurt? Yes. Look at my location, every Tom, Dick and Harry around me has got Internet access. Would you wait here in the queue or go on the Net and print one out?"

He also notes that he would be reluctant to check tickets which had been sold online, because "I'm not going to get anything out of it."

WOULD YOU RATHER HOLD A PHYSICAL TICKET?

But a northern suburbs dairy owner who recently became a Lotto franchisee to increase "foot traffic" doubted that convenience stores would be badly affected.

"Everything is going online", but many customers would feel more confident holding a winning ticket that had been printed in a Lotto shop, he says. He had been told to expect the launch of online Lotto ticket sales in April.

Another retailer said he had been told ticket sales would probably go online within a few weeks. There is speculation that NZ Lotteries may time the launch for a week when there are no massive jackpots on offer.

COMPARED TO BRITAIN

In Britain, where lotto tickets have been sold online since 2003, online sales accounted for 7 per cent of sales in the second half of last year, raking in GBP 163.3 million (NZ$412.9 million). More than three million players in the National Lottery have registered to buy tickets on the Net, through interactive TV and via their mobiles, says national operator Camelot.

RETAILERS STILL MOST IMPORTANT CHANNEL FOR LOTTO... FOR NOW

Ms Jones says retailers will continue to be Lotto's most important sales channel for the foreseeable future and retailers would not be expected to redeem prize-winning tickets that were bought online.

Unlike Britain's National Lottery, NZ Lotteries would not offer an equivalent of its Instant Kiwi "scratchies" online.

Ms Jones says NZ Lotteries has told prospective franchisees of its plans to sell tickets over the Web since August 2007 and has been "very open" with all its retailers.

Yesterday was a big day for me. After sitting at my desk for three months, everything happened at the same time. I had three important meetings; the Extreme Poker Show at the Venetian sent a group in to discuss tactics as did High Stakes Entertainment – the golf tournament guys. The third meeting was maybe the most important…my bookie who owed me money from basketball. That would have been a full day but they came on a day I had two doctor appointments. I had these doctor appointments scheduled for weeks and couldn’t cancel so I tried to make all five meetings.

My first appointment was with my dermatologist. I had a bump on my head that I couldn’t get rid of. Actually it was more like a large pimple and after my experience with melanoma cancer 46 years ago I was more than a little concerned. The doctor looked at it and announced it was a type of cancer that needed to come out. Just what I needed at 9:00 in the morning. Usually at 9 a.m. I roll over for another hour of sleep! The good news was that it was a squamous cancer that didn’t spread easily but it could bore straight down. That was cool; it could penetrate my skull and eat up what few brain cells I have left. The doctor said he would have to make a large and deep incision to be sure he got it all and it would leave a bad scar. I’ve got enough scars on my face and head that it looks like I went through a Viking war. So I told him to be sure and do the operation up right because I was pretty sure Cameron and Drew wouldn’t want me to do any more love scenes in the movies with them. So now I’m walking around looking like I’ve been in a fight at the Hogs and Heifers Bar.

After a thirty minute wait, they said no problem, they got it all. After I went home and changed my shorts I felt fine.

I ran to the meetings with Extreme Poker and High Stakes Entertainment before my three o’clock appointment with my cardiologist. I had taken a bunch of tests at my last visit and she had the results. After chewing me out for gaining ten pounds she said I was in pretty good shape for someone my age. My cholesterol was 179 which is really good but my bad cholesterol – whatever that is – was high. So her advice was to cut down on red meat, don’t eat cheese and to exercise a lot. Yeah, right. I did notice she didn’t tell me to have more sex or do any fun stuff. But, I guess I’ll try to do what she said.

There is an island in the Pacific called Brunson Island. That is where all the bookmakers go after they have me for a customer for a while. They retire and live like kings on my money. This time I had a lot of money coming and my bookie didn’t have it.

No wonder I had to take 2 ½ Vicodin to go to sleep. What a day!

Poker Site Employing Bots?

Internet poker traffic monitoring site, PokerScout.com, reported last week that online poker room, DoingPoker.com, may be using bots to fill its tables. Now, before panic sets in, PokerScout readily admits that it has no concrete evidence of this, but it feels that after observing the traffic and play at the tables, there is a chance that some players on the site may be less than real.

The first point the folks at PokerScout make is one that should make perfect sense to anyone who has played online poker for a few days. Typically, every poker room sees its player traffic ebb and flow throughout the day. Traffic is highest when its core customer base is home, generally in the evenings after work and before bed. Traffic is lowest when these same players are asleep. At DoingPoker, however, the traffic is constant, no matter what time it is.

Additionally, there is always at least one active table for all five poker variations: hold’em, Omaha, Omaha high/low, stud, and stud high/low. At a site like PokerStars, this would not be unusual, but when the site has fewer than 100 simultaneous cash players, this is extraordinary. At small sites, almost every active game is hold’em. At the smallest sites, of which DoingPoker is most definitely one, having even one non-hold’em game going is odd.

PokerScout goes on to note that the players who are seated even look strange. Upon observing a single table, the site noticed that of the eight seats, two were always open. Additionally, and perhaps more damning, the six players seated were always the same. The same after two hours, the same after twelve hours, the same after a couple days. Yet they’d switch seats. Some of the players also had similar names, such as “sasha-us” and “sasha-00,” and “SUMO-00,” as well as “jangsanv” and “jangsang.”

As a final piece of evidence, PokerScout observed that the play at the tables often defied any rational explanation. Either the players were blind and stupid, or they were bots program to just play recklessly and/or randomly. They would also post blinds, get up from the table, sit back down, and post blinds again. There was no apparent method to their madness, except to possibly give a human a chance to take the empty seat for the minute they were gone. In no-limit games, the only bets were min-bets and min-raises, and oftentimes, players would go back and forth, min-raising each other to death, when all of a sudden someone would fold to one more bet.

PokerScout contacted DoingPoker, which responded that it does not use robots to fill in seats. The company said that it is still in testing mode, and does employ people to test the software at play and real money tables. Some of these people, the site said, are not very good at poker.

PokerScout does note that there was no evidence of collusion amongst the suspected bots, but at the same time, it does not know if they would play different against human players.

A new license plate has recently been issued by the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles. The new plate features ‘The Greatest Snow on Earth’ and depicts the majestic Wasatch Mountains with the figure of a skier in front of them.
In celebration of the new plate, Ski Utah has decided to play some cards in the form of license plate poker.
License plate poker is simple to play and all Utah vehicle owners are eligible to enter. The player with the highest plate will hit the slopes next winter with a brand new pair of Rossignol skis and bindings or a Burton snowboard with bindings. Man who killed three in poker game told deputies he had been cheated

The man charged with shooting and killing three men at a private poker game in Palatka over the weekend believed he had been cheated during the contest, deputies reported.

Officers arrested Duane Demaris Crittenden II, 28, of Palatka, in Marion County Sunday morning on three charges of first-degree murder, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office reported.

The owner of a building at 108 Carver St. found the three men dead at the location, just outside the Palatka city limits, Saturday morning. Jerome Anthony Henry, 48, of Seville, and Richard David Smith and Robert Erwin Ford, both 50 and from Palatka, were killed inside the structure, a former bar that officers said people had been using as location for a “high-stakes” poker game.

All four men had been involved in the game, which started Friday afternoon and continued through the night, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Major Keith Riddick.

Crittenden had been in the game and lost, officers reported.

“We understand that he felt that they were cheating, and he went back apparently to confront them about that,” Riddick said.

The men were last seen alive between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Riddick said. Investigators believe the confrontation occurred between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

All three victims were shot in the head and neck area, Riddick said. Henry and Smith were both shot once. Ford had been shot twice and stabbed.

Investigators are trying to determine what happened inside the building among the men. Riddick said the Sheriff's Office plans to try to reconstruct events inside the building.

Crittenden left with money taken from the game, according to deputies. Riddick said investigators don't know how much was taken. Estimates have been made between $2,000 and $9,000.

Crittenden was located in Marion County in the area of SW 22nd Place and South Pine Avenue after an all-night manhunt. Riddick said he did not know what ties Crittenden had to the area but he had previously listed Ocala as a home address.

Investigators have recovered some of the money taken from the poker game, Riddick said.

Officers have spoken with Crittenden, and Riddick said he is cooperating with the investigation to a certain degree.

Crittenden has a lengthy criminal history with 18 felony convictions in both Florida and Georgia, Riddick said. None of the charges were violent, however. Most involved "paper crimes" such as fraud and forgery, he said.

The three victims also had prior criminal histories although none had been arrested on significant charges in recent years, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Gambler sues William Hill for letting him bet

A compulsive gambler is suing William Hill for £2 million of losses he racked up after allegedly asking to be barred.

Graham Calvert, a greyhound trainer, claims that the bookmaker failed in its duty of care by allowing him to continue betting despite his requests to be excluded.

The 28-year-old from Tyneside gambled more than £7.5 million on football, golf and horse racing in an 18-month spree beginning in August 2005.

He once lost £347,000 - at that time the biggest bet in golf history - after backing United States to win the 2006 Ryder Cup. On occasions he would drag bin bags stuffed with notes into the bookmakers.

Aware that his problem was spiralling out of control, and with his marriage on the rocks, Mr Calvert telephoned William Hill in June 2006 to ask them to close his account.

He claims they offered him what is known as "self-exclusion", under which the bookmaker agrees not to accept any bets from a customer for a set period - in his case six months.

But within two months Mr Calvert claims that he was able to set up a new account in his own name and start gambling again.

Since then he has placed more than £3.5 million of bets, losing more than £2 million.

Mr Calvert is now attempting to make legal history by getting a judge to rule that William Hill was negligent in allowing him to continue betting.

"If I'd known I had the problem and didn't do anything about it, I would see myself as being 100 per cent responsible," Mr Calvert, who is now £1.5 million in debt, told the BBC.

"The fact is that I did try to go through the right procedures and I was let down."

Tiejha Smyth, Mr Calvert's solicitor, said: "He was allowed to continue gambling after Hill's agreed he should be self excluded. They should be held legally responsible."

William Hill contests the allegations, arguing that customers place bets of their own choice.

The case is due to begin at the High Court next week.

It's been a relatively quiet start to the new year so far in the world of online gambling, but all that is about to change dramatically.

While the Poker Players Alliance continues to sit back and watch as online poker operates on a tightrope, Gambling911.com can reveal that there is at least one sealed indictment against an online poker operator who we are ordered not to name by our super source. As Gambling911.com readers are well aware, this "super source" also provided us an absolute potent piece of information pertaining to the indictments of two Neteller officials. The Neteller news was broken by Gambling911.com a full day before the Associated Press picked up on it.

"Here at Gambling911.com we work around the clock!" an angry Payton O'Brien, Senior Editor of Gambling911.com, snarled. "The PPA seems to have abbreviated bankers hours. Someone needs to put fire under their ***es."

Furthermore, U.S. officials have begun inquiries into the founders of PartyGaming. That company is currently in negotiations with the U.S. government and has been for several months now. It is unclear what information is being gathered at this time. PartyGaming trades on the London Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, Superior Poker executives insist that the individual being held in Italy facing more than 300 years in prison should he be deported back to the U.S. (Gambling911.com incorrectly reported 140 years) was the owner of the sportsbook software that they used. He also ran bingo, poker and sweepstakes type gaming venues. Fraud charges are being levied against this individual. An Italian judge is reluctant to extradite him back to the States due to concerns over what he believes is a "harsh sentence". Italy would set a maximum of just 10 years for the crime he is alleged to have committed in the United States. The gentleman was a licensee of Action Poker. He fell out of favor with them late last year.

As for those subpoenas going around, these are confidential and Gambling911.com can only report they are related to a civil action involving one specific online gambling website and that the subpoenas were issued to an undisclosed number of venues that accept advertising from the gaming site.

Gambling911.com has been working behind the scenes in an effort to have the two dogged parties at odds sit down and discuss the issue.

The poker community in an ultimate display of their power this weekend appeared en masse at the Washington State caucus to vote for Republican U.S. Presidential candidate Ron Paul. Israeli police arrested seven people and detained 18 others for questioning on the grounds of running an illegal online gambling ring said to be worth millions of dollars.

According to the Jerusalem Post newspaper, the police raided the homes and offices of those behind Tel-Aviv based Play2Bet.com and KG Money Changers in Ramat Gan, following an investigation into money laundering.

Investigators believe that many underworld figures helped staff from Play2Bet.com launder millions of dollars via KG Money Changers to foreign bank accounts.

Four of the suspects arrested were Eliran Oved, Aryeh Avraham, David Hachmon and Yossi Ben-Shitreet, and they are still in detention for further questioning.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the International and Serious Crime's Unit's undercover investigation began after the Northern Fraud Squad got information that Play2Bet.com was offering gambling services that the Israeli authorities believed were illegal.

Police had found that the websites earnings were routed through KG Money Changers and then either laundered domestically or transferred overseas. Access to Play2Bet.com was through a 'closed' list with each player receiving a personal log-in name and password after placing a large down payment to cover any initial bets.

When is a $20,000 casino jackpot not enough?
When the winner is expecting a $86,000 prize.

A 77-year-old South Jersey woman, who refused to accept a $20,000 jackpot, instead claims she was rooked out of an $86,000 prize that she believed that she had won last year playing a nickel slot machine at an Atlantic City casino.

Angela Domino filed suit last week against Harrah's Atlantic City and the slot machine manufacturer, International Gaming Technology of Reno, in Atlantic County Superior Court.

Domino, of Smithville, said she was playing a Spin Poker machine on May 3 at Harrah's. Spin Poker machines are electronically networked with other "one-armed bandits" at various Atlantic City casinos.

The jackpot meter read just over $86,000 at 8:26 p.m. when she dropped a nickel into the machine.

Domino, who has played the slots for 11 years, said wasn't prepared for what happened next.

The reels stopped spinning, landing on the winning combination. The bells began to ring. According to the jackpot meter, the $86,000 prize was hers. Or so she thought.

The machine had reset itself to $20,000 -- but not until about 90 seconds after the win, according to Domino's atorney, Scott Mitnick.

According to the suit, a Harrah's representative met Domino at the machine and congratulated her for winning $20,000, verifying that she had won the top prize.

"She (Domino) was crushed," Mitnick said in an interview today.

He added that his client "is not an inexperienced player. She loves and knows her slots."

Mitnick said when Domino played her nickel, the machine still read an $86,000 payout.

A representative from the slot machine maker confirmed she had won the jackpot and asserted there had been no malfunction, the suit states.

Then a supervisor broke the bad news.

A player at Trump Marina had won the pot at 8:23 p.m. three minutes before, the slot supervisor said. Because of that win, the machine had been reset. Her winnings were only $20,035.31.

Domino protested. She demanded to see tapes made by the casino's video surveillance cameras. She said the casino denied her request.

She refused the $20,000.

On Jan. 23 she filed suit seeking the $86,000 jackpot she believes belongs to her. Domino is also asking for attorney's fees and unspecified punitive damages.

A spokesman for Harrah's said the casino had no comment citing the pending litigation.

A spokesman for the maker of the machine, IGT, Ed Rogich, said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

He did say that Domino won a jackpot, it just wasn't the one she expected. "We're in the business of paying out jackpots," he said. "and in this instance there were two that paid out in three minutes."

"We are aware of the suit filed by the patron and have reviewed the matter with the casino commission," Rogich said.
