5 years ago today, shit got real. iPhone turns 5 today.

Today is one of those days that all smartphone users can appreciate. January 9th, 2007, Steve Jobs got up on stage at MacWorld 2007 and introduced the phone that changed the way we compute on the go. Not only that, it finally kickstarted the smartphone wars.

Disclaimer - I'm not a fandroid, nor do I dislike android. In the last year or so, I've given up on judging or throwing my every opinion out when someone makes an argument to what they prefer and why. I have a couple friends that do that shit on a daily basis claiming they're right and other's opinions on personal preference are wrong. If you like to use Windows, that's cool. Like BlackBerry over Android or iOS? That's fine, but a year or two from now I'll definitely say "I told you so."

With that said, I was reading this article on Engadget and decided to read the comments, which I vowed not to do on any tech blogs about 6 months ago because I get frustrated at all the trolling douchebags that populate this planet, and found one comment that really stuck out to me. (forgive her typos)

people are used to the fact that 'specs mean a lot' they did when we used Windows and played lots of 3D computer games, you could feel the difference between the CPU's based on the specs but now? iPad or iPhone works far better than its rival competitor withe better specs, because its hardware is designed together with soft. I don't care about the specs, I care that loading a site, using apps etc. takes less time and is easier. Who cares what's underneath ? I care about the end results!

I read that as a personal opinion, but also saw some fact. You may have 1 year old hardware, but the software of today is running great on it compared to the phone that came out today. I'm not going to sit here and ponder the differences between software/hardware compatability or how it should be. I'm just going to say that I agree with what this person is trying to say.

I love what my iPhone, iPad and Mac can do when it comes to communicating with each other. I can't give that up. It is my personal preference and opinion which I leave for the people of the internet to appreciate or bash the hell out of. Take it as you will. Thank you, Steve, for this awesome device. Happy 5th birthday, iPhone!

Samsung's tease of a flexible tablet - A brief reflection.

Flashback to October 25th. Microsoft asks the question "In 5-10 years, how will people get things done at work, at home, and on the go?" and then presents us with this really cool bag of garbage that demos how the average Joe will use computers in the near future. Now fast forward to today (whoosh) and you'll see that Samsung has thrown their hat in the ring with a similar concept, but showing only a single device that can do some Star Wars-like holographic shit (video below, page link: http://engt.co/uIS6hE)

My whole take on the thing is this: Are they practical? Even in 5 years? I won't throw down much of my opinions about the ideas of either video because I simply don't know what to fully think of them yet. The one thing I will say about Samsung's is that it's a terrible demo. It's hard to tell what the user is even doing with the damn thing because they condensed it down into, what seems to be, a 30 second TV spot. It's too fast. I find the Microsoft video to be much more thought out.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Do you find either of these things practical in 5-10 years? In what way would it effect the way you compute on the go, at home, or on the job?
