Over the past month, I’ve been working as an admin in the newly launched ProBlogger Forum. It started as part of the 31 Days To Build A Better Blog Project which ended last week (but you can still sign up for the course and take it at any time, or you can wait and buy the ebook), but the forum is still open.

This was the first time I realized the huge diversity in ProBlogger readers – most significantly in the difference between those who use free blogging services like Blogger or WordPress.com versus those who have a self-hosted blog built using WordPress software or TypePad.

There were quite a few discussions that started with people on free hosted blogs that wound up with them being frustrated because they didn’t have the ability to do some of the things that were suggested in the project. That’s reason Numero Uno as to why free hosted blogs suck: Lack of freedom.

This is a post I’ve been wanting to write for quite some time now, even before the forums, but I didn’t realize the need was so intense until now. Before I get started with this… let me first explain the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

WordPress.Com is a free blog hosting service. It’s built on the WordPress software, however your blog is hosted on their servers. You can point your domain name to it, but you’re not blogging on your domain, per se.

WordPress.Org is where you download the WordPress software, access support, tools, training, and other helpful things. Using the software means you have purchased hosting through another hosting company (such as GoDaddy, HostGator, etc.), have your domain name resolved to that hosting account, and have installed the WordPress software to your site using a MySQL database to store the information. (And no, it’s not as complicated as it sounds. It just means you’ve paid either a monthly or annual fee to the hosting company.)

Okay, so now that that’s cleared up, let’s move on to all the reasons why free hosted blogs suck.

As I said previously, lack of freedom. Lack of control. With a free hosted blog, you tend to lose flexibility with what you may want to put on your blog. This could be in terms of content, advertising positioning, even design. Sure, if you pay for upgraded service on your free host, something like $7 – $10 a month, you can customize SOME things – but um… why then wouldn’t you be paying a hosting company $4 a month to do the very same thing on your own domain, where you’re 100% in control instead of only 80%?

They’re simply NOT search engine friendly. Not even Blogger (which is owned by Google). Go to Google right now, and punch in your favorite keyword phrase. I’ll give you a hand: Here’s the results for the phrase “personal finance blog” (opens in new window). How many of those are on blogger, blogspot, or wordpress.com? ZERO. Not convinced? How about “diet blog”? Zero free hosted blogs again. Sure there are exceptions, but those exceptions have likely been online for 5 years or more, and it’s SO rare. I can almost say with 100% certainty that you can’t come up with a phrase that will have a free hosted blog in the top 5.

Limited income opportunities, if any. Sure, not everyone who puts up a blog gives a hoot about whether or not they make any money from it, but those people are few and far between. At some point, pretty much everyone wants to at least make a few bucks a month off their blog. Guess what? Advertisers don’t WANT to pay free hosted blogs because of reasons like above #2. There’s no “juice”. There’s no way to get that search traffic in there. If you’re not willing to pay $4 a month to help you rise to the top, why should an advertiser have faith in you enough to pay you even $5 a month, which is well below average ad rates? People read ProBlogger to learn how to make money from their blogging, yet they’re not willing to put forth the small effort of eating one less fast food meal per month to give themselves the edge? To look like they take their “job” seriously? I understand if you can’t afford it right now, but you’re not going to make the money to pay for hosting off ads if you’re on a free blog, so save up and do it right.

Credibility. Okay, I know this is super un-PC of me to say, but imagine walking down the street and you see two stores.

Store A has clean, shiny windows that allow you to see into the store. The store owner is standing outside on the stoop in a well-tailored suit. He’s neatly groomed, and is offering a 50% off sale on his wares.

Store B has flaking paint on the exterior walls. The wood around the windows is cracked, dry, and damaged. The store owner is on the stoop in rags you just know came from the trash bin because they were free. He’s wearing greasy hair, is missing a front tooth, and is lunging at you as you pass trying to get you to come in and buy something for a rock-bottom price.

Which store would you walk into? Be honest.

Liken this to cars even. When you see an old beater driving down the street, puffing out smoke from the tailpipe and making obnoxious sounds, verus a nice, clean, affordable car… what are your impressions? That the driver of the first car is jobless? Unclean? Living in a trailer park? That the driver of the second car has a decent home and just got done eating a nice meal out with friends? Seriously… think about it!

So what I’m saying is this: You can’t possibly expect to be taken seriously if you’re using a free hosted blog. Period. You get no search traffic, no ad revenue, and no credibility. I don’t care if you have a main website for your business and have attached an external, free hosted blog either… that’s the worst! If you already have a website, with paid hosting, why on earth would you even consider NOT putting the blog software on your hosted site?

I’m fully aware that the economy’s put a serious pinch on everyone. But you have to stop thinking about this as “spending money” on a hosting plan, and start thinking about it as an investment. Blogging isn’t nearly as volatile as the housing market – in fact it’s growing stronger all the time. If you do it right, you should make back your annual $60 before you even spend it (if you need to pay month by month of course), or at the very least by the end of your first year. Honestly!

Now if you’re worried about the technology of it all, the act of migrating your free blog to a paid one, really, I can help. It’s what we do around here. But if you’ve read this and are still thinking that free is the way to go, really… have fun with that, I dare you!

Oh, one more source of proof: ProBlogger’s What Blog Platform Do You Use Most? Poll. Yah. Check out those results! Self-hosted WordPress wins, HANDS DOWN. Even though there are over 400 people still using Blogger.

Can you believe we’re already 25% of the way through 2009? Part of me feels like Christmas was yesterday, but I think the fact that we’ve been so busy around here means a lot!

As usual, I’m still working with Darren Rowse over at ProBlogger, but now I’m also managing content for him over at TwiTip, which is quite the Twitter resource! I’ll also be helping out with the 31 Days to Build A Better Blog project starting this Monday, April 6th. (If you haven’t signed up yet – don’t miss it!)

Along with that, I’ve worked with my dear friend James to launch two projects of his, America The Lost and Shoot. Edit. Publish.

America The Lost

Shoot. Edit. Publish.

James also did a guest post over at Digital Photography School (another of Darren’s blogs) titled 13 Tips For Improving Outdoor Portraits which has been a great traffic boost to both new project sites. America The Lost currently is receiving a decent amount of search traffic – which completely debunks the myth of the Google Sandbox, but that’s another story for another time.

In the midst of all of this, we’ve done most of the work on the liquor store client site, and are now waiting for the newest list of wines so we can add them to the site, work on the front page, and make an official launch.

We also did a big revamp of another great site: Cookerati. Prior to working on the site, it was a fairly old install of WordPress with an outdated theme. So we managed an upgrade and customized a design for them that added some great color and layout changes. There’s been some great feedback from the site’s regular visitors already, and thankfully the owners are pretty excited, too!

Cookerati

Dark Shadows Magazine

We’ve also done some work for a revamped online fashion ‘zine, Dark Shadows Magazine. It’s editor is Genn Shaughnessy, who is a celebrity and fashion makeup artist. She’s phenomenal, folks. Really something!

All in all it’s been a good first quarter, to be honest. I’m feeling good about our clients and their needs being met, despite the economic situation we’re all in.

What You Can Look Forward To

More frequent blogging. We’re taking “consulting” to an extreme in the coming months, and will be talking more frequently on the blog about helping you, either as an individual or as a part of a larger business model, to continue to profit from your online efforts.

Premium WordPress Themes. I can’t say when yet, or how much, but it’s something we’ve been thinking on for quite some time. And yes, there will be an option to have us customize for you. And also yes, there will be free options.

More client launches and relaunches. We’re really firm believers in helping to highlight our great clients. No, it’s not just to show off our stuff (though it helps), but rather we want to share with the world how awesome we think our clients are. We hope you don’t mind the intrusion.

More details on consulting services offered, and improved scheduling options. We’re looking to add more options for lower rates and lesser minimum hours. We know times are tough for everyone, so we want to help as best we can.

So there you have it! We’ve got an exciting quarter planned and hopefully we’ll make it through the above mentioned points and much more!

Update!! Great Opportunity!

I was very proud to be a part of the 31 Days To Build A Better Blog Project run over at ProBlogger.net. I’m thrilled to announce the release of a workbook of the project, that includes updated, additional information not found in the original 31 Days! Darren Rowse has been called “The Godfather of Blogging” and is a dear friend and client. Please, if you have a blog and you’re looking for thorough, practical help on how to improve it, check out the ebook!

Most of you know that I work closely with Darren Rowse from ProBlogger.net. Lately, I’ve also been editing for TwiTip, his blog about all things Twitter. But that’s not what I’m here to announce, folks…

Beginning April 6th (the project’s been delayed a week for various reasons, as it was originally scheduled to start April 1st) Darren’s launching the third ever 31 Days To Build A Better Blog class. He did the same project in 2005, and again in 2007, so he decided to do it again now in 2009, with updated info and a new format.

The class will now be delivered via email, and the added feature this time around is the addition of a forum! I’ll be moderating in the forum, and helping to answer questions when I can.

Darren explains it best:

The idea behind this is simply to have a group of bloggers setting aside a month of their time to work at improving their blogs. While we all want to have better blogs sometimes it becomes one of those things that we’re going to do…. one day.

I personally find that I improve (in all areas of my life) when I’m more intentional and set aside a specific time to make the improvements. That’s what this project is about.

Just wanted to put this note out to readers and visitors who might be wondering why it’s been so long since I’ve posted anything around here.

In three words: I’ve been busy.

It’s funny, because I’m always telling my clients that it’s important to blog on a regular basis – at least 3-5 times a week, every week. Yet here I am not practicing what I’m preaching!

I’m actually working hard on trying to develop a better “routine” – it’s something that as a business owner wearing a thousand hats, I’ve had trouble with quite a bit. Add to that, I’m mostly doing things all on my own plus that I work from home (which in and of itself is known to prove troublesome at times for most people) and I’ve got a list of excuses a mile long.

Anyway, I just wanted to update and let you all know about the projects I’ve recently completed and those I’m working on currently:

America The Lost – A project by my friend James Pickett. I can’t reveal any more than the fact that his tagline for the site is “Inspiration is not lost.” Right now, you can go and sign up to be notified of the launch via email.

Shoot. Edit. Publish. – Another project by James, as he’s a professional photographer. He’ll discuss photography (digital and traditional) and videography there. We’re planning on taking submissions from contributors as well and are planning on adding a forum. Again, this one has a form on the front right now, where you can enter your email address to be notified of the site’s launch.

The Saratoga Comedy Club – Right now, the site isn’t showing any changes, but the theme there now is an outdated one and it’s in dire need of a revamp, so that’s on the table as well.

Cookerati – A re-design is in the works for this blog project. Should be a great update from the also outdated look it has currently.

Luna Fabulous – This is a personal project of mine that’s been in dire need of attention and thus is receiving that. It’s about living a fabulous life, regardless of where you think you might be now.

Montréal On The Cheap – This is a great blog part of an “On The Cheap” network, featuring various cities across North America. The blogs are written by people who actually live in those cities, so they’re passing along “insider” information about how to live, work, and play in today’s economy.

I’m still working over at ProBlogger, and while Darren was away on vacation, I did some work over at Digital Photography School and TwiTip. I’m also working on a project for a local liquor store, which is an online wine store and wine blog (I’ll announce that link when the site’s completed.)

James and I were also working on getting some of his fine art photography prints framed and shipped off to a red carpet charity event in Las Vegas for an event called The Great Pit Ball. It’s put together by Brandon Bond, international tattoo artist and pit bull activist. The event will feature his documentary film, Viktory the Underdog and the whole thing serves to benefit animal rescue (more specifically pit bulls) and the Villalobos Rescue Center in Canyon Country, CA. Villalobos is the largest, no-kill Pit bull rescue center in the country. It’s a really cool project.

So there you have it… all the food on my plate right now! I promise I’m going to start working towards regular blog posts, though. Since Ginkgo Consulting has opened up services to include blog consulting (by phone or email) and so on, I want to offer up better tips here on the blog itself.

Thanks for your patience!

In case you’re not aware, FeedBurner (a highly used RSS management tool) was acquired by Google (this happened back in May 2007). As in true Google style, they’ve finally gotten around to messing with it to the point of driving web designers/developers mad.

I admit, I rarely log into my FeedBurner account. But I’m pretty grateful I did, because THAT is how I was notified of the problems that were soon going to mount on my plate. See, there was standard code for creating subscription tools on your blog – and Google had to go and bork that all up, so now I have dozens of sites that need immediate attention (before February 28, 2009 in fact) or subscribers will be in the dark. (For some reason, I’m hearing those “switch to digital cable” commercials in my head now…)

In effect, the code has changed. Depending on your site (all sites I develop are in WordPress), and if and how you’re using any plugins to help drive your feed to feedburner (Feedsmith is most popular), and then depending on your site’s theme setup, you or your developer may have a TON of work to do.

If you’re using any of the popular Revolution Two themes (as I am… ugh), you can find help in the forum here: How To Update Feedburner Code To New Google-Feedburner Code

If you’re using any of Justin Tadlock’s great themes, and are a support forum member, you can view the fixes in the forum here: Feedburner RSS issues with Options Theme

Otherwise, you’re kind of on your own, and will have to use the new tools provided by the Googlenator to help you take care of business.

I’m probably “one to talk” about this right now, being that I’ve been so wrapped up in projects for the past month that I’ve yet to even clear up the to-do list for this site, but I wanted to help you guys prepare over the weekend for what’s known as the busiest online shopping day of the year.

Now, before you click off, remember that even if you’re writing a blog or aren’t selling products as part of your business, there are still lots of ways you should prepare your site for this Monday.

Triple check your navigation. Run reports to check for 404 errors (and don’t forget to update that custom 404 page, just in case) and fix links where applicable.

Check your design and layout for problems. Did you insert some code a while back that screwed up your site’s layout but you never got around to fixing it? Is your sidebar too cluttered, distracting visitors from the important stuff?

If you’re selling products or services, create a “Cyber Monday” special (a discount, package deal, etc.) and make sure that it’s clearly highlighted on all entry pages to the site. Make a new banner or button, and make it the focus for your visitors.

If you’re not selling products or services, develop a shopping list or page using your affiliate links. I’ve got two on my b5media blogs right now, and while they’ve only been up for a couple days, there have already been purchases made. Every little bit helps, of course.

Promote special sales promos or pages in social networks like Twitter or FaceBook. If people are shopping online, they’re bound to be chatting up friends about deals and specials they’ve found. Toss yours into the mix and keep the conversations flowing so you’re not looking like a ridiculous spammer. If you’re not on Twitter or FaceBook yet, you’re missing the boat, so move that task above all of these first and foremost.

This list is of course not exhaustive, but it’s 5 major things that you actually might have the time to do over the weekend before Cyber Monday hits, that just might make a world of difference.

My friend Aaron Brazell is extremely involved with WordPress and the development process. Whenever there’s a new update, he writes a really fantastic post, and this time is no different: 10 Things You Need To Know About WordPress 2.7 is not for the faint of heart, but only because of the major changes, which Aaron highlights and explains most thoroughly and thoughtfully.

I’ve grown so fond of Aaron’s “10 Things” posts, I’m going to feature them here so my clients can use them to learn more about their system when they first start blogging, or whenever we make changes to their version by way of an upgrade.

As always, I’m going to recommend holding off on upgrading to 2.7 off the bat. I know that 2.6 has been buggy for some people (the flash image uploader is giving one of my clients a serious migrane) and that the temptation to upgrade straight away is huge, but I almost always wait for an extended release, like 2.7.1 or something to do upgrades. It’s inevitable that there is something that needs more tweaking or changes, and plugins that worked before will stop working, designs, so on. So as far as my clients go, we’ll be holding off a bit, but it’s a great idea to read Aaron’s post and get a good idea of what’s on it’s way when we do.

For those of you who might not know, along with the work I do that comes in for Ginkgo Consulting, i also blog on two sites for b5media, my personal weight loss blog, a personal finance blog (because hey, it’s popular right now), and a few other blog projects I have going on. Yes, I’m a busy girl!

One of the biggest problems that I’m finding myself and other bloggers go through is how to develop a good routine with blogging. I’ve talked to some bloggers who just post whenever the mood strikes them. They get an idea, write it, hit publish, and move on. Other bloggers do loads of research and writing and re-writing before they’re happy enough to publish something – bringing their frequency down to even less than once a week.

It’s a pretty well known fact that posting frequency is one of the many crucial elements to your blog’s success. If you post too much, you might “flood” your readers and annoy them. If you don’t post enough, you risk losing their interest, which is super hard to get back once it’s gone.

I’ll point to the two “inspirational” posts now, but I’ve decided to do an experiment to see if I can, first of all, get myself on a good routine, and also see how it affects things like readership, traffic, and income.

Tips on Finding Your Blogging Rhythm by Darren Rowse at Problogger
How to Develop an Efficient Post Frequency by Skellie

So here’s my plan:

Ginkgo Consulting – 3 posts per week
Weight Loss Blog – 5 posts per week
b5 Blog #1 – 4 posts per week
b5 Blog #2 – 6 posts per week
Personal Finance Blog – 5 posts per week
(I’ll worry about the other projects once I get these nailed down, but only because they’re not really “live” yet anyway.)

So, that’s quite a bit, eh? 23 posts per week. It sounds a lot worse than it is, because by my own nature, I’m more of a get the thought, blog it, social media mark it, and be done with it type. Not that I don’t respond to comments on the posts (because I do), or that I just forget about the post once it’s done, but rather that I can sit down for two hours and crank out some decent quality stuff most of the time. Other times it takes a while, given research and so on, but I fancy myself a decent writer, so 23 posts per week doesn’t sound so scary to me.

Besides, if I can do that many, plus manage all the “regular” work through Ginkgo, and YOU, dear reader, have only one blog and/or a full time job… well, you can see where I’m going with this! You’ll have no excuses!

My goal is to mark out chunks of time to write for each site throughout the week. I love WordPress’s post-dating feature, so I can sit and write three posts and post date them for throughout the week, and be done with it until either something newsworthy comes up, or I reach my next chunk of time writing for that blog.

So, starting Monday October 27th, I’ll be posting weekly updates on “The Experiment” through the end of the year. We’ll see how things go, I’ll post traffic results and so on, and we’ll go from there!

Wish me luck, and let me know your thoughts in the comments…

Do you have a regular blogging schedule?

Are you a researcher/rethinker or do you just write, publish, and market as you go?

I’m a huge fan of Leo Babuta’s Zen Habits blog. I’ve mentioned it before (My quarterly office checkup), and will surely do it again. I just read an AMAZING post about productivity: Productivity 2.0: How the New Rules of Work Are Changing the Game, and I wanted desperately to not only put this stuff into action for myself, but to share it with my clients and colleagues.

The topic basically goes into “old school” versus “new school” philosophies on work and productivity, and it clears up a lot of misconceptions of what really works versus what doesn’t. They can apply to blogging, your 9-5, web design, or basically any job you can think of where you have a little bit of freedom to manage your time (which unfortunately isn’t always the case for certain professions). I’m sure with a little tweaking, you can apply these “new school” habits to your career, and I know I’m going to work hard trying to accomplish that for myself.

In brief, as quoted from the post:

Don’t crank out tasks — learn to work with a deeper focus. Don’t plan and hold meetings and form committees — just launch the software or product or service and keep improving it. Don’t spend time organizing — you’ve got more important things to worry about.

I’ve been really focusing on time management for myself, and it seems the more strict I try to get, the more frustrated I get, but still the less I accomplish than I wanted to. Rather than focusing on “Finish. Now.” I’m going to work harder at getting each task on each project done, one at a time. For ongoing stuff like copywriting or blogging projects, I’m still going to have to work on deadlines and such, but for other things, it’s just a matter of focus.

In a newsletter to clients about the change in the company (Re-branding your business.) I mentioned a new payment system I’m implementing for ongoing projects. I promised a maximum 48-hour turnaround on requests, for the sole purpose of helping me stay on top of my tasks in a more manageable way. I’m using technology (Outlook 2007) to help me with this. Rather than calendars and post-its, I check my to-do list via email requests that have come in when I check my email first thing in the morning.

Do you have any productivity challenges you’re trying to work on? What do you think of Leo’s concept of “old school” versus “new school” productivity?
