Well, I have been stitching, but the progress is very slow…. Besides being very busy in the past few weeks, the irregularity of the pattern totally threw me off!! Here’s my version of tutorial if anyone is interested.

Materials:

Glass Jar – I used empty pasta sauce jars, but you can also find similar jars at Michaels.

Christmas lights – I found this 20 lights Christmas light at Big Lots for only $1.70 a piece. I also saw them sold at CVS.

Fabric – Choose a lower count fabric so the fragrance can come through. A crochet piece would be a best choice, but since I do not know how to crochet, I chose a 28 count fabric for the top.

Potpourri of your choice

Jute twine or ribbon

Decoration of choice

Step 1:
Cut your fabric to size desired. My jar has a 3” diameter opening, so I used a 6” square fabric. If desired, stitch a small design at the center. Trim the fabric edge with a pinking rotary blade.

Step 2:
Stuff the jar with Christmas light and potpourri as tight as possible. Try to layer the lights and potpourri so the lights are not all bunched up in one place.

Step 3:
Cover the jar with fabric. Center your stitched motif. Wrap twine around the fabric tightly. Add decoration if desired.

That’s it!! Believe it or not, the most difficult part for me was the bow!!! I can never make a perfect bow!!!! Once again, it was Vonna to the rescue. I used her bow tutorial and mine turned out better then before but still not as perfect…. I have been busy on wrapping some projects up in the hopes of making the Christmas deadline. Although I’m still working on my last monthly stitch of the Little House Needlework’s ornaments, I finally started to finishing them up. Do you remember this quilt from last winter (“the never ending quilt” as my husband call it…)? Well, due to the drop of temperature, it has made its appearance again. I love sitting on the couch with this quilt covering my legs while I work on it, not yet finished but it has already be keeping me warm~ I actually don’t mind the never ending quilting, to me, it kind of relaxing. But still, lets hope it will come to an end before this winter ends.

Well, this is not Déjà vu!! One day it is so hot it’s like back to summer, and the other it’s so cold I wonder winter has arrived too early. As I was looking for ideas for a gift, I came across the book “B is for Baby” by Suzonne Stirling in the library. When I saw this giraffe growth chart, you know I couldn’t resist making it!!!! Not only because it is totally adorable, but also because my friend is a giraffe lover herself!!!!

Pattern: From book “B is for Baby” by Suzonne Stirling
p.60 “Giraffe Growth Chart”
Size: 20” x 59”
Completion Date: 10-20-2011

I was very lucky to have found the perfect fabrics for this project, and even have enough leftovers to make a second one – but that will be a future project. What I love about this growth chart is you can mark the heights directly on the canvas instead of the wall, that way if you have to move or remodel in the future, you will still be able to keep the records for yourself.

This is a quick and simple project that involve little sewing. almost everything is done by simply using iron-on adhesive and glue. It can easily be done in an afternoon or two. I actually make a few changes, including using a wiggle eye instead of fabric ones, and adding wooden dowels with end caps to finish the look.

As for the numbers, I could not find the rub-on transfers that the book called for anywhere!!!! So I thought maybe I can use stamps. But do you know how difficult it is to find numeric stamps?! I must have went to three or four craft stores but all they had were either alphabets or I had to buy a whole set for the numbers!!! Then it dawned to me – why don’t I use stencils?! I still had to buy a set for the numbers but there were actually several different fonts in the correct size for me to choose from, plus stencils were a lot cheaper then stamps!!! I am actually very happy of the result.

So happy birthday, baby Alec!!! (Click photos for a better look~)

This Celtic Knots pattern were originally meant to be 14” squares each, but the maker decided to do them in 1/3 of the original size, which was pretty amazing!!!!

I also love reading the stories behind every quilt. Listening to her speak was so much fun~~~~

And of course we had to hit the vendors!!!! We totally lost ourselves there, especially the wool applique booths, visiting and revisiting each of them, debating what to get. After much deliberation, I managed to control myself and walked away with only a small hull. My friend, not so much. She did quite a damage to her budget…. We had so much fun, though!!!! Quilt shows are always more exciting with friends~~

I still haven’t decided what to make for my 3 year blogoversary yet, but I think I will throw in some of the finds I got at the quilt show. It has been two years ago since I started this. Maybe it’s the over one stitching that intimidates me a little, every time I saw her laying in the WIP basket, I just keep skipping right by her. Then recently I saw a beautiful master piece that took my friend two years to finish. I was really motivated by it, and that’s when I picked up Mary again. Over one is still a bit intimidating, but I managed to finish two and a half motifs this past week, and starting to fall in love with this piece all over again~

This bird motif gave me quite a challenge, though. I must have miscounted somewhere cause when I was working on the bird on the right, something was just not right. I did not want to rip it all out so I just made it work. Hence, if you look closely, one bird is wider then the other, and the center doesn’t line up. But this did not bother me too much, since I learned from Mary, sometimes mistakes do happen, and it could be a beautiful thing.

So this is where I am at right now, a little more then 1/3 done.
