The Navy and Navs

2008-04-01T13:08:00.000-07:00

Here's a story I wrote for my journalism class. I figured since it doesn't get published anywhere, that I'd publish it somewhere myself. Anyways...enjoy.Jim Downing awoke early in the morning like he always did and prepared to go on deck the battleship USS West Virginia. A 9-year Navy veteran, this was more than routine. It was mechanical. But Dec. 7, 1941 was nothing he or anyone else was used

The Excellency of Christ

2008-03-25T09:37:00.000-07:00

In today's Christian landscape, there tends to be perfunctory faith, a shallow commitment to Christ, and superficial engagement with the mission Christ left for His people. While the Puritans had glaring faults of their own (not to mention excesses in some of the rigidity), our modern Christian culture could learn something from the great theological heroes of the past who understood the reality

50 Predictions for the NCAA Tournament

2008-03-19T19:51:00.000-07:00

* These predictions don't reflect my IU Navs facebook group and family pool picks because I pick for those in a much safer manner to increase my chances of winning. These predictions are seen in my entries in national contests, such as the ESPN.com and cbssportsline.com contests.1. Neither Butler nor Drake will make the Sweet 16. It's never the highly-touted mid-majors that do well. It's the ones

"We cannot open our eyes without being compelled to behold Him. His essence, indeed, is incomprehensible, utterly transcending all human thought; but on each of His works His glory is engraven in characters so bright, so distinct, and so illustrious, that none, however dull and illiterate, can plead ignorance as their excuse." - John Calvin

Big Ten Power Rankings, Week 5

2008-02-06T07:52:00.000-08:00

On to another set of rankings. Does not include Tuesday's games. Power Rankings 1. (2) Wisconsin (8-1, 18-3) – Bo Ryan’s Badgers rarely make Sports Center’s Top Ten highlights or even the Big Ten Network’s highlights of the week. But if going under the radar is the result of playing fundamental basketball, I’m sure Ryan doesn’t mind. The team seems

Big Ten Power Rankings, Week 4

2008-01-28T21:33:00.000-08:00

If you're reading my blog for something besides basketball, I do apologize. I am not giving up on other endeavors for this blog, but I'm busy doing other things in life and these rankings are really easy since I follow this stuff anyways. If you're interested in reading some other stuff I've written - nothing terribly exciting - search "Nathan Hart" at idsnews.com where you'll find some of my

Big Ten Power Rankings, Week 3

2008-01-21T15:02:00.000-08:00

Beyond Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan State, the Big Ten will probably qualify one or two more teams to the tournament. It'll be the team that beats all the average and worse teams in the conference and wins a couple home games against the trio at the top. Minnesota had its chance this week and lost home games to Indiana and Michigan State. Ohio State and Purdue look like the only other viable

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 2

2008-01-14T15:54:00.000-08:00

Intro: I've decided to do a regular update on Big Ten men's basketball power rankings. Feel free to discuss. It's listed as week two, because it's week two of the conference season. Anyways...This conference is really looking a lot like it did in the fall, just a new sport and new names on top. Like their pigskin counterparts, the quality of talent is lower than years past, and the bad teams are

Taking an instant out of time

Sean Salyards, who attends the Bloomington RPC, is an M.F.A. student at IU and was recently an award winner at the American PHOTO’s Images of the Year Awards Event in New York. His website, www.seansalyards.com, features the award-winning album "Pauline" as well as some other work. I don't know Sean all that well, but at least I thought I'd publicize in my own little way some of the cool work

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison for his role in a dogfighting operation on his property. This maximum punishment has created some debate as to whether Vick's sentence is fair or unfair. My thoughts:As long as humans are allowed to kill babies without punishment, any sentence for killing dogs is too harsh. It's rather senseless to go after

Bear one another's burdens

In my Navigator's guys' Bible Study this semester, we worked through Loving God, a short booklet by Susan Nikaido. At the end of the book, the author listed several suggestions to reinvigorate one's spiritual life. Too often, she wrote, spiritual disciplines evolve into mere routine and empty ritual, eventually leading to plain boredom. Her advice ranged from practical (study a book of the Bible

Happy Thanksgiving

2007-11-22T09:39:00.000-08:00

Colossians 2: 6-9As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells

A new creation

2007-11-19T13:43:00.001-08:00

This afternoon, I read II Corinthians 5. In this chapter, there is the rather well-known verse: "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new."I thought about what it means to be "in Christ". Knowing Christ is not just an intellectual transaction and acceptance of the historical facts of Jesus, rather it is a relationship

My friends, comrades, and fellow well-informed audience who, in the midst of a coup d'etat in the United States, would only care about Meredith and Derek's or Jim and Pam's relationships: this little writer's strike is the television equivalent of the apocalypse.Scrubs might not have a proper series finale. The late night shows are on reruns already. (Stephen Colbert is taking this free time to

You see, I did actually have grand intentions for this thing. It was going to be my newspaper. My opinions. My website. My whiteboard on a dorm room door. My soapbox. As you can tell, it's been nothing. Is there really nothing to write about? Of course not - Indianapolis has a new mayor. He'll become the second most-known Greg in Marion County behind the guy that's sitting in street clothes on the

Here It Goes Again

It seems appropriate to start blogging anew as I embark on life as an Indiana University undergraduate journalism student. It's the trendy thing to do for journalists.I retired from the teen blogging scene awhile back for several reasons. My posts on the egocentrically titled Nathan Report were predominantly personal, mercilessly sophomoric and essentially self-satisfying. When I shut down that
